If you could undo any of the retcons in DA, what would you choose and why?
the inquisition.
i mean, this is a short answer, but as time goes by, i understand that this is an honest one. this is a tangent, but i guess dai is just an example of electronic arts' production hell if bioware planned the second game only as a bridge for the inquisition's main conflict, and then we get this regarding the mage uprising. like, it's reasonable to assume that since da2 was supposed to be a preamble, the dai's initial main focus was the mage rebellion? and then it's just one main quest in the beginning of the game, and that's it.
but this is not about retcons, it's just me being annoyed. it's just the dai is the most fruitful regarding the topic.
hawke suddenly hating on blood magic. they tried so hard to push it with leandra's death, and then just decided to take the matter in their own hands, ig.
whatever the fuck hawke and varric say about anders. this is not their point of view, at least not in every case, in da2??
whatever the fuck they did to dalish.
like, vallaslin? i guess it's cool if you get inspired by real-world peoples, and then decide to make vallaslin slave marks.
or make their gods powerful slavers Just Like The Nations that inflicted the genocide on them. nothing about andrastianism, tho.
dalish actually kick out the mages is the obvious one.
the point of view on the red crossing. same reason. i count it as a retcon because of the implications that elves actually did that (i.e. the exalted march) to themselves.
also iirc they changed relationships between dalish and city elves/ made it worse to shit on elves again. stop that wtf!! they won't, ofc.
i dunno if it's a retcon or just conscious disinformation, but the presentation of celene and briala in-game. no spoilers, but did they suddenly decide that celene actually didn't do anything she did in the masked empire?
whitewashing of alistair, fiona and briala. they don't look like that, you fuckers???
make these cullen endgame sliders canon again and work from here, cowards. i actually got them in my playthrough even tho they deleted them, afaik. (the ones where he snaps and kills three mages.)
actually, the whole cullen arc. i won't say anything new here, his story was supposed to end in dao, da2 at most.
and i think there are other sliders from dao they retconned and put aside, like with the circle that mages built near orzammar? do it, cowards! it would make such a good plot point in a normal version of dai where your focus is the mage rebellion.
the ending of dragon age absolution. i'm sorry, did anyone find it satisfying? did anyone go, like, hell yeah finally? or i knew that!
the wardens. of course they're suddenly all that stupid to fall for cory's lap dog's lies and shenanigans!
i dunno if the last one counts as a retcon, but it surely falls into the same line of crimes against the previous lore. suddenly bioware felt an urge to shit on every group da:o players held dear. because grey morality. but, you know, even without "i like diversity and opportunity to be a dick, i don't appreciate when the game tries to push an agenda in defense of the oppressors and you can't fucking escape it", sooner or later one should understand that trying to mix grey with every colour in the picture will lead only to it looking dirty and messy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
thank you for your question! :)

booksbooksbooks{2} - a convoluted excuse to drive the choo-choo train
I have the good fortune to live very near a library that reopened a few months ago, which means: more books!
The Black Locomotive by Rian Hughes was one such book that I saw on the shelves and decided to read like old times - no recs, no familiar authors, just rolling the dice on a book that looked kinda interesting. Paging through it, it looks kind of wildly ambitious, each chapter alternating with tables of materials that make up the built environment and architectural plans and varied, experimental typography. As a work of Design(tm), I certainly can't fault this book.
And indeed, as I got going reading this book, introduced to a beleagured Crossrail engineer who stumbles across what is blatantly a big old alien artefact and a buildingfucker artist whoo is constantly going on huge long meandering meditations on the nature of architecture infrastructure in his POV chapters, I was pretty intrigued. It seemed like it would be going somewhere really quite interesting.
However.
The actual story that all this is in service to is an elaborately contrived scenario in which a group of train-obsessed men who joined a train club as kids must coordinate a nation-wide conspiracy of message board users to drive an old steam train cross-country from the 'strategic steam reserve' of decommissioned steam trains under Box Hill into London... in order to open a locked door. Because the aliens created a field which disables all modern electronics you see, so they can't just blow it up or something.
You see: the artist, Rutherford, went into the alien spaceship that lies underneath London and formed the sort of psychic seed that the city grew around. And closed the door behind him. And they only found one key. And they need to get in and stop Rutherford before he does any unwise alien shit. Hence the whole train thing.
So crossrail engineer Austin teams up with his old schoolmates and users of the 'Smokebox Club' forums to crack the nut with a steam train, coordinated using a phone app, which tells everyone exactly where to go and how to move the points to direct the train to the right destination.
So far this is all a bit silly but like. It's a fun idea, and an interesting way to play with railway-fan conspiracy theories and so on. What really soured me on this book, if I'm honest, was the ending.
Once this is accomplished - of course it's accomplished, you don't set up a premise like that and have them fail - our co-protagonist Austin finally gets to confront Rutherford. And doesn't do anything. He just kind of backs down and goes along with it as Rutherford flies central London into space to get involved in a space war or something. Literally this whole entire plot, which gives the novel its title, which takes up the entire second half of the novel, goes absolutely nowhere.
At that point the house of cards kind of came down for me. Rather than fun and provocative, all the interstitial panels and schematics felt rather superfluous. For all its grounded descriptions of Crossrail engineering and typographic inventiveness in the presentation, the actual scifi premise was all pretty standard space opera stuff.
You might notice a lot of parallels in this description to Seth Dickinson's novel Exordia, which I loved. Both novels transition from their characters encountering the manifestation of a terrifying alien artefact to a mad dash supported by the efforts of people across the country/world to get the protagonists where they need to go in a last-ditch effort and, not to get too deep into the Exordia spoilers, both subvert that direction. Both books invoke a subject that can be quite dry and academic - moral philosophy, architecture - and make it the heart of a dramatic scifi story.
And while there are many differences that led to me liking Exordia more than The Black Locomotive (Exordia is a lot darker and richer in its imagery, it's a lot more international in its outlook, women actually do shit in it, etc.), the biggest one for me is that Exordia had actual structural and thematic payoff. What Anna does at the end of the Exordia, while it betrays the triumphant arc that seemed to be in motion, is still interesting - horribly so, it's the crux of it all. What Austin does at the end, by contrast, is nothing! He might as well not have done any of it.
The whole book drives (literally) towards a confrontation, yet Austin and Rutherford barely have enough time to set up any sort of adversarial dynamic (they both find the idea at worst mildly annoying). There are some parallels between them - both are deeply lonely men, we are reminded often, men who subsume their inability to participate in heterosexuality into their work and just kind of numb themselves to it. So Rutherford is sort of vaguely interested in people in the abstract, but mostly in terms of how they form part of the city, which is his real love. Austin is your classic engineer guy.
The other thing that left me cold with The Black Locomotive is the concept of the Smokebox Club. It felt something like a plot tumour - a cute idea that somehow grew to subsume the whole book. Hughes is clearly very proud of this: he's come up with a logo for it, a theme tune with multiple remixes, fake magazine covers, and a whole bunch of lore about its secretive workings. And like, listen, I've been in the Infrastructure Club slack, I've been on forums, I know how train nerds be.
Where this truly broke down for me is the series of brief POV chapters in which people get messages from a phone app they vaguely remember which tell them to go to a nearby rail and move the points, and somehow this all goes off without a hitch. Each POV character gets their own font - for example, an old man escapes from his nursing home, and one guy is a thief/gang leader called 'Ice Prophet' ('real name Yousef Evans') whose section is delivered in a handwritten font, but he finds a sudden spark of prosociality when he hears the Smokebox ringtone and recalls his dad (yes this chapter is kind of painfully written). i.e. people from all walks of life come out to help the train on its way, isn't that wonderful? Hurrah for steam trains, every boy wants to drive a train don'tchaknow.
I can definitely enjoy a 'people from across the land come out to support the big project' plotline. Sure, all of Japan's electricity must go into the rifle to blow up the angel! It's incredibly silly, and often softly nationalistic, yet it can be very emotionally compelling.
But.
The narration is pretty explicit here: the app shows detailed pictures and the MCs have a UI indicating which points on the line have been checked. And normally, in fiction, you might overlook questions like 'so who coded this app' and 'why does it have this functionality'. But this book is literally all about infrastructure. How and why things are built, the way architecture shapes our lives and grows like an organism, this is all stuff we've spent chapters and chapters meditating on. So it's a lot harder to ignore!
Over the course of the latter half of the book, the Smokebox Club grows from a train forum to an elaborate secret society which commands supranational loyalty from its members. Surprise: Austin's boss Georgia Ash is the Chief Engineer! One of her predecessors was probably Winston Churchill.
And like, OK, it's all a bit of fun. But it really undercuts the setup of the rest of the book, all the grounded effort to tie it to real places and engineering projects and British history and politics, to fold everything back up around an oddly culty train enthusiast forum.
Overall, then, The Black Locomotive disappointed. I looked up Rian Hughes after reading - it turns out he's a prolific typography designer, graphic designer and illustrator, as well as working frequently in comics, who's recently turned his hand to writing novels (his previous being XX). Which probably goes a long way to explaining this: all the stuff he's got decades of experience in is what's strong in this book. But the actual scifi novel aspect is fairly underbaked.
Science fiction and fantasy authors do, for some reason, really love London. There are so many books directly or indirectly about the nature of this city (and often its secret spiritual underworld) from authors like China Mieville or Neil Gaiman, as if London is the paradigmatic city, which all other cities somehow echo. I do feel like it's a bit played out at this point. Like in this book, if London's unique complexity is because it was seeded by a reality-warping alien spaceship that was cultivating the complex society it needs to replace its pilot and get back into space... what of like, literally every other big city, just as steeped in history?
I guess if I mostly read novels in French, I'd probably end up saying the same things about Paris...
#fiction#sff#rian hughes#the black locomotive#a rare negative review from canmom dot whatever#i can finally take this back to the library now i've reviewed it - it's obscenely overdue...

me yapping about natlan from last night:
ok so i am VERY mixed on natlan quests. the final boss was the coolest shit ever but also leading up to it there was a lot of ehhhhghh stuff. especially in the last act
also pyro traveler is AWFUL. all of the constellations are specifically designed ONLY to be used in that final bossfight and have no utility outside of it. and the thing is the final boss fight is AWESOME but like. pyro traveler is just kinda insanely mid normally now.
leading up to the fight theres also just like. a TON of exposition about a bunch of shit just sort of dumped on you. like i LOVED capitano and his story but so much of it was just sorta slapped in there right near the end it felt like we really never got to know the character at all before his huge tragic death
again though the like. fetch quests and dialogue shit reeeaaaly pulled it down for me. there's segments of the climax of the story where you're doing like. boring ehhh puzzle shit which should NOT be in like. the final fight of your story that it has all been leading up to.
plus theres this bit near the end where like the whole crowd of characters is like cheering for you and its like the power of friendship n shit which is fine but. its already happened like 3 other times in the natlan story and just breaks up the tension for no real reason there was this whole thing about like some of the diff natlan characters being like heroes brough back from 500 years ago to help save the day but. they're not involved in the final fight at all, just the big penultimate thing which imo SHOULD have been the final fight it was way more interesting
idk i also feel ehhh about natlan in general. i feel like it didn't take as much from its inspiration cultures as the other regions and it also didn't have enough unique stuff to balance out. i think they picked out too many differing cultures as inspirations instead of focusing harder on one plus the natlan charactgers and setting feels. Weird. time and technology-wise.
i feel like a lot of natlan's flaws can be compared with fontaine or liyue, which in contrast
adhere well to their cultural/historical inspiration with architecture, aesthetics, cultural values, and have detailed long histories
also incorporate plenty of original and fantasy elements (automatons, dragons, adepti)
the culture and history of the area are represented in writing, quests, design, and visually
have characters with aesthetics that both fit well within their regions culture/aesthetics and fit genshin's general time period and style
when more modern elements or aesthetics are incorporated, it's usually in a way that doesn't feel immersion-breaking (such as how there's like dubstep and shit in fontaine's soundtrack: this works because the only times electronic music is being used is when something fucked up and otherwordly is happening, like in the bossfight with the whale)
natlan on the other hand
has much less detail in its culture and history explained other than major plot-relevant things
while the saurians are an interesting element, they're not really incorporated into the design of natlan as a whole. the people in natlan don't seem to use saurians for much other than pets or bodyguards, and they don't really change the way cities or villages are designed. just sort of plonked in there.
natlan's elements just aren't very cohesive. i kind of get what they're trying to go for, but it's not working. there's grafitti, yeah, but we've seen a total of 1 graffiti artist and she was in a limited time event that's over now. why are there giant paintings on the mountains? who put them there? we don't know! characters talk about having saurian pets and friends and how the saurians are like part of their households, but we almost never see characters other than the traveler interact with saurians for more than like a minute!
character aesthetics. this is one of the worst ones for me. why do kinich and ajaw have a fucking pixel glitch aesthetic going on? it doesn't really say anything about kinich's character or contribute to it, and feels SO out of place in genshin's setting. why does mavuika have a fucking motorcycle? because we wanted fun biker girl aesthetic i guess??? you can't just keep saying "its phlogiston" every time thats BORING its a boring explanation
the aesthetics in general are kind of one-note and boring. the people of the springs area literally looks like a goofy water park and their personalities are "we like to swim and have parties" because they're the water tribe i guess.
and also everyone's pale as fuck.
plus the nightsoul mechanics. only natlan characters can have nightsoul stuff which means you're incentivized to have multiple natlan characters in your party for most of the dps characters, and these dps characters get bigger boosts from natlan supports. it's blatantly unbalanced to get you to pull new characters and its the reason i haven't pulled on a lot of the natlan banners. plus the pretty blatant powercreep with mavuika over other pyro dps characters at least with arlecchino she has different weaknesses that can help balance out her high dps, like her inablility to heal from other characters in combat which requires you to think differently about how you build a team
natlan feels both like some of the core elements of its story weren't put in place right and it also doesn't have enough meat on its bones somehow. which sucks because there's great stuff in there! i enjoyed the battle sequences a lot, the character stories have been pretty compelling, and most of the archon quest stuff was interesting! which makes it so much worse that it just doesn't measure up. bleh.
in short natlan's story is kind of meh, the worldbuilding is bad, and the character mechanics are bad.
and to top it all off: capitano non-playable

Neon Dreams and Pixel Quests
In the heart of a bustling cyberpunk city, where neon lights clashed with the darkness of the night, there existed an arcade that was a sanctuary for those who sought refuge in the digital realms. The **Arcadia 2099** was more than just an arcade; it was a portal to countless worlds, each game a gateway to new adventures. It was here that a group of friends, bound by their love for pixelated challenges and 8-bit melodies, gathered every evening after school.
The arcade's entrance was marked by a flickering sign, half of its letters lost to time, but its reputation needed no illumination. Inside, rows of cabinets stood like soldiers at attention, each screen a vibrant canvas of colors and motion. The air was thick with the scent of warm electronics and the sound of synthesized tunes layered with the rapid clicks of buttons and joysticks.
At the center of this electric labyrinth was the **Crimson Phoenix**, a machine that was the stuff of legends. It was said that whoever topped its high score would be granted a wish, a digital genie hidden within its circuits. The game was a relentless shoot 'em up, with waves of enemies and a difficulty that scaled to near-impossible heights.
Our protagonists, **Mia**, **Jin**, and **Takashi**, were an inseparable trio, each with their own reasons to conquer the Crimson Phoenix. Mia, with her sharp eyes and quicker reflexes, was the strategist. Jin, the jokester with a heart of gold, had hands that danced across the controls with grace. Takashi, the quiet one, possessed an uncanny ability to predict patterns and an unbreakable focus.
Their quest was not just about the high scores; it was about proving themselves, about finding their place in a world that was rapidly changing. Each victory was a step closer to their dreams, each defeat a lesson learned.
As they took their places before the Crimson Phoenix, the screen came to life, and they were transported into a world of spaceships and starfields. The litRPG elements of their real-life quest blended seamlessly with the game, their progress tracked by an unseen system that awarded experience points for every enemy vanquished and level conquered.
But there was a twist to their tale. Unbeknownst to them, a mysterious figure observed from the shadows. Cloaked in anonymity, a hacker known only as **Cipher** had discovered that Arcadia 2099 was more than it seemed. There were whispers of a dark secret, a code hidden within the games that could unlock power beyond the screen.
As Mia, Jin, and Takashi battled through the digital cosmos, Cipher plotted their next move. Would they be allies or adversaries in the grand scheme of things? Only time would tell.
The friends laughed and cheered, their camaraderie echoing through the arcade. They were not just players in a game; they were warriors in a digital odyssey, their lives intertwined with the fate of the Arcadia 2099.
And so, their story began, a slice of life wrapped in the fantastical, a tale of friendship, challenge, and the pursuit of dreams in a world where reality and fantasy blurred into one.
**To be continued...**

Pocketful of Neon Rain
As a person who likes to play video games than span a variety of genres, one of the things I like to do after playing a lengthy and intensive game is play something short and sharp. So, from a tactical role-playing game set in ye olde medieval fantasy times, I decided to travel to the near future and become a simple delivery driver in a neon-heavy world. Enter: Cloudpunk with its flying hover cars and cyberpunk aesthetic that did a much better job at exploring the themes of the genre than Cyberpunk 2077.
I know that that’s a bold statement to make but Cyberpunk 2077 was all about the bombastic blockbuster set pieces. It was about rebellion and sticking it to the man. But the character felt like they were outside of the system. A stranger looking in and tangentially touching upon the lives of those living in the world. Yes, it dealt with big megacorporations and the corruption within, but the themes of exploitation and the impact of the megacorporations was missing.
In short, Cyberpunk 2077 was all about the razzle dazzle. Cloudpunk on the other hand focused the perspective smaller. It wasn’t about the big picture so much as it was about the little guy and the daily choices they could make with regards to their life. In Cloudpunk, players are thrust into the shoes of Raina. Fresh from the Eastern Peninsula, chased by deb corps, she’s simply trying to make a new life for herself in the city of Novalis.
During her night shift in the city, Raina is able to meet a whole series of different characters. Some are earnest dreamers. Others are much more nefarious. Yet, through it all, we get a better understanding of the dynamics that underscore the world we’re in.
Just like Cyberpunk 2077, megacorporations rule the city. The wealth gap is astronomical and yet there are still some people that are able to survive. Yes, there’s a seedy underbelly but beyond a brief arc that is explored, it’s not the major plot thread that the game revolves around.
Rather, it’s focus was on the exploration of class dynamics and the moral dilemmas that come with living in such a world. Androids and hover cars sound cool but the reality of Novalis is of a crumbling city with a rotten core. Preferential treatment is given to the rich. And while androids have managed to fight for their freedom, there is still an undercurrent that they are less than human and face discrimination.
The concept of memories, the inability to feel a particular emotion, and the consequences of sapient AI all take centre stage in Cloudpunk. And these are all fascinating aspects that I wish could have been addressed in more depth. Especially when it came to things such as automata and being able to insert particular AI personalities into different types of electronic devices.
And what about that brain ghost reveal in the end with Control? Now that was certainly a frightful concept. How terrifying would it be to have our consciousness hijacked and enslaved for an ulterior purpose without the ability to step away? I certainly don’t think I could thrive in such an existence.
It helped that all the side quests encountered in the game further served to reveal more of the world. True, it was still the same-old gameplay of picking up a package and delivering it to another part of the city but it helped colour in the dystopia-esque world of Novalis.
What stood out for me beyond the themes that were running through the game was the fact that there was no combat in Cloudpunk. The gameplay involved driving around in the HOVA car and occasionally being able to exit it to chat with denizens of the city or purchase food or clothing. Cloudpunk also featured a few collectibles but these were all marked clearly on the map. There was no need to scramble around, checking every nook and cranny in the odd chance of missing something.
Admittedly, the one thing I disliked about the game was the fact that some of the items you found were needed to fix broken lifts, or granted you access through particular thoroughfares. This was a poorly explained part of the game but thankfully there was plenty of resources throughout the game that I could find so I was locked out of any critical paths. The only other thing that annoyed me was how floaty the stearing for the HOVA was. Although I suppose that could be chalked up to the fact that I was playing with mouse and keyboard. Regardless, I would have preferred a smoother way to to drive around.
All in all, Cloudpunk was a great palate cleanser I needed after playing through Tactics Ogre Reborn. Unfortunately, I followed it up with another huge open world: Diablo IV because my friends were all playing Activision-Blizzard’s latest game and I didn’t want to miss out (the jury is still out regarding the merger with Microsoft but the trial has revealed a little more about the gaming industry as a whole). Otherwise, I’d have probably played through Hi-Fi Rush and gotten through Marvels: Midnight Suns.
But, as with everything in life, plans can go awry and it’s all about adapting to change. New games are always coming out but I’ll take my time. After all, the games will still be waiting for me and there’s no rush.
