[JOUR J]  Jean Malaurie, le dernier roi du Pôle

Spécialiste du monde arctique, l’explorateur Jean Malaurie fête aujourd’hui jeudi 22 décembre 2022 ses 100 ans. L’homme qui parle aux pierres a vécu mille vies en une. Tout un siècle d’observations et de réflexion est résumé selon le quotidien Paris-Normandie dans son dernier ouvrage : « De la pierre à l’âme ».

 QUI EST-IL ?

Jean Malaurie Né le 22 décembre 1922

Explorateur spécialiste des régions arctiques et anthropo-géographe (comme il aime à se définir), Jean Malaurie a d'abord étudié la géomorphologie avant de se joindre en 1948 au Groenland à une expédition conduite par Paul-Émile Victor. Le Grand Nord et ses habitants vont dès lors devenir son domaine d'étude.

Directeur de recherche émérite au CNRS, Jean Malaurie va ensuite diriger le Centre d'Études Arctiques à l'École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. La première chaire de géographie polaire est créée pour lui en 1957 par le grand historien Fernand Braudel. Parallèlement, il fonde et dirige la célèbre collection Terre Humaine chez Plon éditions.

Scientifique engagé et écrivain de renom, Jean Malaurie va publier de nombreux ouvrages, dont des best-sellers comme Les Derniers rois de Thulé (1955), traduit en 23 langues, Ultima Thulé (1990), L'Appel du Nord (2001) ou encore  Hummocks (2003-2005), tous consacrés (comme ses 9 films) au Groenland et à ses eskimos. Président d’honneur à vie de l'Académie Polaire à Saint-Pétersbourg, docteur Honoris Causa de l'Université d'État de Saint-Pétersbourg Ambassadeur de Bonne Volonté pour les régions polaires arctiques à l’Unesco, Jean Malaurie accumule les prix et les distinctions en France comme à l’étranger.

The Soul of Cinder is such a great concept bc it is literally the result of what happens if you refuse to let something die. It's something that needs to die, the whole world practically BEGS for it, but it still fights on bc of all the lords of the past who chose to keep it alive anyway.

Like, imagine a garden that is never trimmed but ever watered. It needs to be pruned, it needs to be restrained, it may even need to die in the winter so the farmer can have another go, but instead the farmer keeps watering it, keeps feeding it, until it grows out of proportion, leaves and vines tangling up fences and spilling out into the yard around it. In accepting the gift of life given to it, it has become deadly to the things around it, as it chokes out the life from other plants and ruins the natural order of things. Yet it can no longer be simply pruned in an afternoon now, no, now it's become a whole landscaping job (and as somebody who worked landscaping for a summer job, it's a nightmare). It took the life you gave, and it'll be damned if it gives that life back without a fight.

And that's exactly what we see with the soul of cinder, something that has to be killed, but it's clinging on to the gift of life with everything it's got. It's the indomitable human spirit in its most pure, terrifying form. Pulling out everything that it's ever been given in an effort to keep holding on to life.

Yet life must give way to death; the rain must drive away the sun, and the grass must wither and fade away.

In 1823, an aspring young lawyer named Jules Labarte (1797-1880) married Joséphine Debruge-Duménil*, the only daughter of the wealthy art collector Louis-Fidel Debruge-Duménil (1788-1838). He was enthralled by his father-in-laws collection, one of the first major private collections of Medieval and Renaissance Art in France, and by 1835 he had abandoned the law to dedicate himself to the study of art history. A few years later, Debruge-Duménil passed away unexpectedly, and Labarte was charged with identifying and cataloging his collection of over fifteen thousand artifacts, a task he took on with great meticulousness. 

The resulting catalog was published in 1847 by La Librarie Archeonologique de Victor Didron with a 400 page introduction. This well-researched introduction became a highly sought after text, and Didron pressed Labarte for years to produce a second edition. Labarte refused for years, but allowed for a English translation, published in 1855 by J. Murray of London as Handbook of the Arts of the Middle Ages and Renaissance as Applied to the Decoration of Furniture, Arms, Jewels, Etc. 

The English edition only increased the appetite for a revised French edition, to which Labarte finally agreed. Between 1864 and 1866, Histoire des arts industriels au Moyen Âge et à l'époque de la Renaissance was published in Paris by A. Morel et Cie. in four volumes, with two additional volumes of plates. Printing was done by Henri Plon, an ancestor of 16th century Danish typographer Jehan Plon. The plates are primarily chromolithographs produced by Lemercier, the largest lithography firm in Paris at the time. Keep your eyes peeled for a follow up post where we will share images from the second album and discuss Rose-Joseph Lemercier (1803-1887).

The above images are all sourced from the first album of plates. Critics praised the book’s illustration for its rich colors and “photo-like accuracy.” You might look at the last image above (of the statue St. Anne and her Children by German artist Hans Greiff) and question that characterization based on the somewhat bizarre faces, but lo and behold, the faces on the actual statue are a bit strange!
