A surf town kid.

Hey there, my name is Cooper William White, I was born and raised in a small surf town in Northern California called Santa Cruz. This beautiful place holds some of the best waves on the California coast. Growing up I was fortunate enough to have the surreal Pacific ocean as my backyard babysitter and playground for 18 years of my life. Growing up in and out of the water taught me lessons of respect, friendship, and loyalty. Without the adventures with my friends in and out of the water as well as throughout my small hometown many things in my life might have changed.

Growing up in Santa Cruz might seem like an average California kids experience with sunny beaches blue skies and not a worry in the world, the unfortunate truth is that there are many things about getting from one place to the next that has been overlooked. The unique wave in Santa Cruz it’s called “the hook” and without this wave, I don’t think that I would have been able to understand respect. The first time I surfed “the hook” I was 10 years old, just a grom paddling out with a no clue about a community built around respect for the older generations of surfers. It didn't take me long to eventually get into somebody’s way or sit in a section of the break that I shouldn't have or paddled around the wrong person, clueless of the past and completely entitled to get waves. The older generation of surfers noticed and soon after there was only one thing to do, either set it stairs or get it and so, grom beating! Nobody says anything when the 45-year-old guy is dunking 10-year-old kid in the water until he can’t breathe anymore but that has been the way it’s been since the beginning of surfing in Santa Cruz. A highly localized community with a complete pecking order and hierarchy. Although it’s may sound mid evil there is a method to the madness, as it may seem grom beating never turned me away from surfing. People have had worst before me and someone will probably do worst today. So from the age of 10 to 18, as a grew up, I worked my way up the lineup, getting to know more and more of the “boys“ and more and more of the old crew. As it grew to get to know them my surfing grew as well. I found a deep love for longboarding and although Longboarding was never allowed at the hook, on any small day, you could find me surfing a longboard at any place, but the hook. It wasn’t till I was 18 when many of these older guys started to notice my interest in longboarding, my proficiency with the board and how careful I was to never mess up. As they’d seen from my eight years of being a grom growing up in the lineup still surfing with many of the boys for my life they never saw me overstep to longboard the hook. they gave me an opportunity one day as i suited up in the parking lot say “hey why don’t we see how you run on that board today coop.” I never would’ve been able to surf such fantastic wave without learning the lessons of respect from the water. Now those lessons stick with me for wherever I go through life meeting new people and understanding that there might be traditions ways have been going on for a long time the best thing to do is to never try to overstep or move too fast, that only gaining mutual respect could bring me farther in surfing then I’d ever thought I would be able to do.

The community in Santa Cruz although may seem harsh and unjust from an outsider's perspective has Only shaped me to be closer with so many people in my community. Many of my friends had same experiences surfing in Santa Cruz as young kids. In a way we’ll fortunate for this and all brought us closer being able to want to surf with each other and surf together it made sessions more fun and memories in the water only ever beat between the people out there. With the group of friends that was created, we could travel, compete and always have each other’s backs all bread in the surf community and all coming from a similar background and positive attitude towards life. This allowed me to create friendships not only with businesses but with the people inside of those businesses like my board shaper Nick Palandrini ( @sourcesurfboards), or the man behind most of these images Brian Garrison  (@wetfeetphoto), and eventually reaching out to one of my childhood heroes Cody Townsend who grew up in Santa Cruz surfing and skiing in Tahoe, eventually co-creating arcade belts (@arcadebelts) and allowing me to ride and live as an ambassador for the company. These connections came from water they came from the ocean and from the people that we’re drawn to it. And again as time has kept teaching me the connection of water has kept bringing me lasting friendships in lessons throughout my life.
