Harry Potter and the Year He Discovered He's Marked for Death:

-Almost got killed because a ghost wanted a glorified birthstone.

-Found out he's a magical messiah.

-Was told another wizard tried to murder him as a baby.

-Was sorted into his future dorm by a talking hat . -Found the reflections of his dead parents living in a mirror.

-Played a sport where people ride broomsticks and chase after possessed balls of various sizes. -Rudely woke up a 3-headed dog while running about the castle with his friends.

-Chased a herd of flying keys.

-Played killer chess.

-Found out 1/2 the wizarding world expects great things from him, good or bad, while the other 1/2 just hates him simply for being alive.

-He and his friends decide to take on a Mountain troll by themselves.

-Decides to go to the bloody RESTRICTED section of the library where he gets screamed at by a cursed book.

-Almost gets strangled by a jungle of possessed vines

Hack This Site - Application #15

So basically this challenge is a really crappy game application and to get the password we need to move ourselves on the other platform. The movement is literally retarded and it’s not even funny how crap this game is. First thing I notice loading up this game is these files being dumped into the %TEMP% directory under dbpdata2/:

The files all get cleared out after the program exits but we can still examine them while the program runs:

Most of the files are just for the graphics however the “_virtual.dat” file interests me so I opened it up in a hex editor. I tried searching for a number of different terms however “password” came up with something:

So basically some of the text drawn in the game is stored in here. Naturally I wanted to jump to “Intermodular References” to try and find out where this write to the file is occurring (i.e. its generation) - I put a break under kernel32.Create FileA and had a dig through some of the loading up. I didn’t actually find anything that useful except that it was loading some level details from the “_virtual.dat” file after decrypting them. 

I did a bit of research on the framework used for graphics and positioning which is “Dark Basic” (it displays it after exiting) and from my understanding most of this is loaded from a matrix. Coincidentally there is a module known as “dbpromatrixdebug.dll” which happens to have calls relevant to “Position”:

Out of all the calls the “PositionEx” one seemed the most interesting and landed us here (after tracing it back):

So right in this section we have a heap of graphics code above and position code - the interesting part is that there is 2 calls to “dbpromatrixdebug.?MakeEx” so perhaps this corresponds with the fact that we have two platforms being generated? I decided to put breakpoints on all these calls and look at the inputs to the functions - I then realised that the code itself is actually loaded dynamically so whenever I restart the program I lose the positions of these breakpoints. I can get around this by breaking on the external call, then tracing back in the debugger to set the breakpoints which will execute in the future (without restarting the program) - there is a call above to “dbprocore.?RndLL” which I can use:

Now the first call feeds in arguments of (1, 25, 25, 1, 1) - note that the 2nd and 3rd values are floats based on a conversion done just above with the “CastLtoF” function. Checking out the next call:

This one has arguments of (1, -12.5, 0, -12.5) and appears to represent the position of a platform. Perhaps the other one might be the actual size? Let’s look at the next two calls:

So we have MakeEx(2, 25, 25, 1, 1) and PositionEx(1, -50, 0, 50). So we basically have (x,y,z) coordinates for where the platforms are positioned and their sizes - based on this it’s probably a good assumption that the player is positioned at the first platform since (0, 0, 0) would be standing on it. So our goal is to change the player position to (-50, 0, 50). Scrolling down further I went past a heap of drawing for the initial text and loading, however I noticed something interesting here..

There is actually a jump instruction which goes over a giant section of drawing and then goes to the section which prints this:

So I wondered what would happen if I got rid of this jump and ran the other drawing code:

And look at that it prints out the password as “platform93/4″; so I didn’t even need to dig into the location info at all, I just needed to find where the password had been hidden. Putting it in plain text would have been too obvious, so instead we drew it out manually with dots.
