Need a potting bench for the back deck really badly. Last round of potting was done squatting. Decidedly less comfortable and pleasant. The table I've had for the last couple years was the cheapest folding table you've ever seen, gotten second hand. Water pooled on its sagging surface constantly. The plastic top was actually just a thin layer of plastic over literal cardboard, which rotted out so completely that one day in a high wind the top of the table took its leave of the deck, and headed for Pennsylvania. I've been checking FB Marketplace off and on for a replacement for over a year but not seen quite what I'd like yet.
But every time I look at "potting benches" online, I'm honestly at a loss for how they're expected to be used. Indoors, I guess, for starters. If I used that twee little shelf they like to put on the back for pots small enough to fit there, said pots would also head for PA in the next hard rain, via the neighbor's yard. He is a very good natured man, but Reginald and a constant bombardment of escaped nursery pots don't help my case.
Then, the things are only like 4 feet wide tops, often including a little reservoir for soil. The soil tub is a good idea, but that means even less space to work. Man, I'm not potting up one African violet for The 'Gram, I'm trying to work here. I'm trying to fill flats, pot out a couple dozen seedlings, stuff like that!
I've yet to find a "potting bench" that looks more like a tool than a cottagecore fantasy prop, and when I do it'll cost the sky.

Growing Paw Paws from seed: 2024
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of y'all may recall last year I made a Plant Profile post after finding my first Paw Paw (they don't really grow this far north in NJ so this was exciting). Well after eating the fruit I decided to see if I could propagate the seeds and I was very successful!
Below I'll describe my process and some tips, this was unconventional towards how I usually grow saplings but I was in my final year of a masters program, needed to be as cheap as possible, and this is probably easier for those of you in apartments
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So you want to propagate paw paws? It's not hard it just requires a bit of understanding.
When I found my first Paw Paw I was on the University of Pennsylvania campus, I saw a tree in front of a multi-faith church and immediately recognized the fruit. My friends and I climbed up the branches to get some bigger fruits and then we basically ate them on a nearby bench.
Once I had the seeds (I started with 14, only 4 viable) I walked home and washed off any debris then I wrapped the seeds in a damp paper towel (wring out excess water) and placed them in a plastic bag in the fridge for 3ish months
Around February I decided to grow them, I had some extra cardboard pots I was starting oaks in (image 3: ps I hate these pots) and knew I could use this to to start the seeds, at the same time I asked a friend to grow paw paws so we had a diverse gene pool to produce fruit. Paw paws need deep pots because they develop a taproot that can easily reach 12" the first year, instead of buying multiple deep pots you can place disposable pots in a bigger container with soil. If you find like long/narrow containers those are your best option.
I used left over peatmoss (but loamy potting soil will be better) and placed them 1" deep each. I then cut off the bottoms of my small cardboard containers and placed those together in a deeper pot I had (image 4). You want to retain moisture, so also cover the pots in plastic wrap. Of course water enough to keep the soil moist that goes without saying.
Paw paws take about a month to germinate above the soil but still need the increased light levels. Keep an LED light on above it (these are very cheap to operate) They will start growing a taproot soon after you plant them and occasionally will break the surface, just try to keep it covered in dirt.
Once they appear above the surface (this was march-april for me), let them grow till they develop like 4-5 leaves before planting out. I kept them in my Frankenstein pots until about June when I had time to exchange with my friend (he grew like 18 with seeds from an online seller but stunted their taproots a bit).
Tumblr media
Paw paws have a natural insecticide in their leaves, I didn't encounter any herbivory from both deer and insects but I left my best specimens in a sapling cage. I planted about 8 in my yard, all around 4 inches tall (image 5), in partial shade conditions. When you plant the sapling dig a little deeper than the taproot and leave soil around the taproot itself, it helps to have a deep trowel. For amendments, I mixed in richer compost soil with the native soil, but for a few I gave no amendment (I wanted to test if it made a big difference). Ultimately those which grew the most were in brighter conditions but they all did okay, my largest ended up being 15" (image 6) which is the same development as some nursery stock I've encountered for $165...
Tumblr media
On a side note you're not supposed to move them once planted but I ended up having to do this with one. I did break the taproot in half, however this sapling still survived so these trees are a bit hardier than others have implied.
So, is this the best way to grow paw paws? No absolutely not. Is it cheap and basically using just garbage...yes! Try to grow your own :)

🌿indoor garden update: hydroponics edition🌿
I got a grow light, a fan from a yard sale, higher quality soil from my local plant nursery and some hydroponic gardening supplies since my last post. And now i have plenty more plant children!!!
Tumblr media
My kitchen scrap radishes and green onions didn't survive, due to a fungus gnat infestation in the soil I used. I managed to save most of my other plants, but the soil those two were in was so infested I had to get rid of them :( but I have added: hot peppers, chives and cherry tomatoes!! Those are the larger pots in the middle of the wood shelf. Two of those started sprouting!! The chives haven't sprouted yet but I have hope. And the tomato plant I had last time got so big I had to separate the seedlings and put them in individual pots:
Tumblr media
Theres seven total but i only took a pocture of these six. They're doing very well!! They love the banana fertilizer I made. And I've added some more seedlings to my greenhouse: (first image) more basil, lavender, pepprmint, parsley, catnip and sage. As well as thyme and oregano in the second image here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I poked holes in the bottom of a recycled spinach container and used that for the thyme and oregano.
Now for my hydroponic jars: butter lettuce (2), Chile peppers (2), cilantro, spinach, bok choy, emerald oak lettuce, and romaine lettuce. These are doing really well too!! This butter lettuce is grown from scraps:
Tumblr media
I put it in a coffee filter net i rigged up until my hydroponic supplies arrived, and i transferred it once i got them. So i thought i messed it up and killed the plant but she's growing!! She's strong too. And here's the others that are growing from seeds:
Tumblr media
The romaine lettuce and the bok choy are the ones in the back that have the tallest sprouts. I can't wait to take pictures of all the jars once the root systems grow more and I can remove the socks!!!
Oh and here's the orchid. She's doing amazing:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: the first image shows my whole indoor greenhouse tent in front of a permanently sealed glass door. All my plants are visible in the image with the pink orchid being the star of the show at the top of a capital A shaped wooden shelf and the sunlight is shining through the glass and feeding all the plants. A table and chair set and a peach tree is somewhat visible, outside in the background.
The second image shows six terracotta colored plastic pots with two-ish inch tall tomato seedlings in each one. They're healthy and happy, and one pot has a yellow gnat sticky trap sticking out of the soil on the side of the pot.
The third image shows a plastic bin full of eleven biodegradable seedling starter pots, these are the basil, parsley, pepprmint, catnip, lavender and sage, and three of the cups towards the top of the image are sprouting but it's hard to see. The fourth image right next to the last image shows a recycled clear plastic spinach container filled with soil with a cardboard divider in the middle and another yellow gnat trap against the divider, sticking out of he soil. No sprouts yet. There's also recycled plastic wrap on one of the edges for trapping the humidity in the planter but it's pulled back for now.
The fifth image shows a wide mouth mason jar full of nutrient water and a beautiful butter lettuce plant growing out the top, out of a black net cup thats touching the water inside the jar. The biggest leaves are about three inches long. My hand is visible in the image as I'm holding the jar.
The sixth image shows six larger wide mouth mason jars with the same arrangement, though the clay pellets im the black net pots are still visible since these are younger plants. The two jars in the back have the tallest sprouts and the two in the middle have smaller sprouts. The two in he front have no sprouts as I planted thoe seeds just yesterday. A part of my grow light is visible in this image, it's got four long lights attached to one base and all the long lights are facing out on different directions but one light is showing. All the plant jars have black socks covering the glass parts which will be removed when strong root systems grow in.
The final image shows my pink orchid. It's hook shaped, so the plant is growing upright and to the left a bit. And she's supported by a stick holding her up. But she's healthy and happy and all her flowers are soft and vibrant. Her leaves at the bottom are a dark but beautiful green and shes currently living in a white pot. End ID]

masterlist 🌰 part two 🪴
⊱ ─────── ⋅ʚ♡ɞ⋅ ─────── ⊰
Terracotta pots lined the shelves in your home. Caring for plants has always been a passion of yours. Something about walking into a room and seeing that familiar pop of green always managed to brighten your day. Your home was a borderline plant nursery at this point, leaves tangling and sprawling out from pots nestled in every free space.
Sure, you loved all of your plants, but some had a special place in your heart. A few years ago you had started buying the worse for wear plants from greenhouses and garden shops, affectionately calling them your 'rescues'. There was something so satisfying about nursing a sick or injured plant back to its vibrant, thriving self. When you stumbled across a wilted ivy cramped into a restrictive plastic container, you promptly settled it into your cart, knowing you had found your next project.
First, repotting. You took the drooping greenery out of its original plastic pot, gently tickling along the roots to softly convince them out of their rigid square shape. You swear you could almost feel them tremble as they started to stretch and expand to life. Loose dirt and fertilizer crumbled off in chunks as they were finally allowed to breathe again, freed from their restrictive container.
Sprinkling fresh fertilizer rich in different plant macronutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium into your chosen spacey pot, you then layered in topsoil before digging a well for the plant to sit in. With a gentle hand, you lovingly nestle the roots into the soil mix before gently covering them in a blanket of cool soil. The next step was thoroughly watering the fertilizer down, willing the roots to soak up the water and nutrients.
Over the next few weeks you dote on the plant, noting in delight how the once dull green leaves sprout to life. At certain times when light trickles through the window, it catches the leaves and turns them into an almost glittering blue as they sprout up and out. The once flaccid vine spread like wildfire, blooming and crawling over the edge of the pot, creeping into free spaces.
Out of all of your rescued plants, this one has become your pride and joy. It almost became sort of... regal? It silently commanded your attention and you'd always find yourself drawn to it. Lately you’d developed the habit of settling in front of it in the morning, having soft one-sided conversations with the growing vine as you went through your morning routine. You showered it in soft, loving praises, so proud of how determined it was to survive despite the circumstances you'd found it in. It always got watered first, got the first helping of plant food when it was due, got the most gentle praise at the growth and progress. You'd come to rely on seeing the beautiful, teal-green leaves sprouting up, marking each time they'd hit a new inch on the ruler.
After a long day at work you were ready to jump into your regular routine of caring for your plants, starting with your favorite. Settling your bag into the nook, you step into your living room, eyes surveying the greenery. Then suddenly, everything feels very wrong; you feel your heart sink down beneath your knees.
Severed blue-green leaves lay along the floor, their vibrant hue tarnished and muddled with debris. The pot was smashed against the floor, topsoil scattered and sprayed across the wood along with the pieces of broken terracotta.
Your mind raced trying to come up with possibilities. If it had been a break in, why hadn't they taken any of your stuff? Why was the plant the only thing they’d bothered with? A stray animal sneaking in through a window? No, you're always diligent about locking them and surely there’d be more signs of a rogue cat or bird.
"What the hell happened?" You whisper, heartbroken. As you start to collect the broken remains of the pot and the severed leaves, hoping to propagate them at the very least, you notice it. A trail of soil leading out into the sunroom.
Following the trail, you take shaky steps, taking brief moments to try and calm your racing heart. Taking a deep breath, you push open the screen door and step inside before letting it fall closed with a metallic snap.
There he stood, bathed in golden sunlight, a radiant aura of light around his tall form. Chin facing the sky and soaking up the rays of sun shining in through the tall window panes, a prideful smile curled on his handsome face. You were ready to bombard the admittedly gorgeous stranger with questions, but then you noticed the familiar leaves you'd grown to love clinging to him.
"It's taken a liking to you, huh?" You say, mystified. Since you'd gotten the mysterious plant, each stage of its growth had been a new surprise. Without having trained it to climb, how was it managing to look so natural curled around him? It practically looked like it was standing on its own, almost like this was its natural state.
"Hm?" The man slowly turned his head towards you, still smiling. His eyes were an earthy brown, rich, deep, and full of life. His presence filled the room, warm and comforting and his gaze felt so fond and familiar, like you'd known each other your whole life. Despite having a total stranger in your home you felt oddly at peace... Your eyes eventually trailed down the vine, widening slightly as you tried to process the sight.
The blue-green hue of the viney tendrils snaking up his body contrasted beautifully against his pale skin, even more so where leaves stemmed off and sprouted, curling around his arms and up against his neck. The vine clung to him adoringly, slipping under his skin, taking root and stretching out where veins would be. Your eyes trailed the network of roots, barely visible under his skin.
"Am I still your favorite?" He asks playfully, gazing down at you fondly. "You'd talk to me everyday... Telling me how pretty I am, how well I'm doing... Am I not to your liking in this form, Y/n?" He bends over slightly, coming down to your eye-level.
"You... you're..." You stumble over your words, shaking your head to desperately find some sense of clarity. With a trembling finger, you reach out, turning a glittering leaf to face you. "I-I don't understand..."
He leans in slightly at the gentle touch, his eyes fluttering closed briefly before looking back at you with an impish grin.
"I don't think you'd understand if I told you," he chuckles, his pointer finger tapping on the tip of your nose teasingly, "do you?"
"Probably not..." You mumble honestly, still completely entranced by the handsome man? Vine? Something somewhere in between?
"Then let's skip the long-winded explanations, okay?" He purrs, his tone slightly patronizing. Not that you were able to pick up on it with the bizarre nature of the situation unfolding. Straightening back to his full height, his arms stretch high above his head. "Seriously though, thank you for taking care of me... I'm embarrassed that anyone saw me looking so... pitiful." He turns away, a faint blush painting his cheeks.
Ah... prideful thing, he is.
"It's... no problem. I like taking care of plants... And you didn't look that pitiful. You just needed some TLC." You reply, shrugging softly. You'd rescued a lot of plants from various situations, but this is the first time you'd been thanked by one. He peeked at you out of the corner of his eye.
"Oh, by the way..." He smirks, quickly reverting back to his regal self. All evidence of his past embarrassment melted away as he turned to face you. "Just because I have my strength back doesn’t mean you get to just toss me out now~” A teasing lilt painted his voice. “I mean this is technically my home now. It’s where I’ve settled my roots.” A vine reaches out, tiny leaves tickling your nose playfully. He leans in close, breath ghosting over your cheeks as he presses his cool forehead to yours. Soft brown lashes kiss along his cheeks.
“I’m your blessing now~” He teases, and despite the confidence he exudes it feels almost vulnerable.
“Blessing or problem-” He cuts you off with a slender finger pressed against your lips, smirk widening at your playful remark.
“I could never be a problem, I’m always delightful…” He tuts in mock offense. “But I suppose either way I’m yours now.” He chuckles softly. “You won't be able to get rid of me.” A leafy tendril gently slides along your arm, the sleek vine raising goosebumps in its wake. “Creeping vine and all…” He jokes lightly, but there’s still an undercurrent of something more in his voice. Something you can’t quite place.
“I-” You start, tone unsure. You peek out at the gorgeous stranger before you. “I think I can live with that.”

The 'Elimination Communication' Felt Board Set
Certainly it’s such fun to ask adult baby to tell you things from behind a pacifier gag, but it’s even more fun to fixate a slave on their “potty training” and “oopsies!”  No need to choose between them; the “Elimination Communication” Felt Board makes it easy to keep a nonverbal record of little one’s toileting, no matter how dull and silly they’ve been made.
A fleece base is clearly printed with the days of the week, each with lots of room to give a full report of each toilet visit.  (It can stand on included feet or hang on the wall.)  Matching covered box has nine inner compartments to hold cling-felt stickers so baby can choose the appropriate icons to tell you all about the little leavies it made.
Felt stickers include …
Numbers.  Three sets of digits 0-9, coordinated to your board style, help numerate babies convey ever-more-granular, ever-more-embarrassing concepts – from clock time, to length of pee in seconds, to number of plops.
Potties.  Selection of yellow droplets and splashes, plus poo piles in three different sizes.
Faces.  Classic yellow emoji smile, frown, cry, open their mouths in a surprised O, or screw up in an effortful red-tinted “push” face.
Places.  Twelve each of toilets, toddler potties, diapers, and grass tufts; six each of vintage chamber pots, litter boxes with stink lines, and lace-edged underpants.
Details.  Water drops and geo pieces with a “brick” pattern let baby indicate texture and ease of passage.  A set of circles in different shades of yellow (from straw to mustard) and brown (from pale clay to nearly black), plus a few greens and reds, help you track baby’s digestion and hydration from their little color reports.
Choose a base style to match the bathroom or nursery!  Princess Cheapslut style has baby-pink fleece board, Princess Pink Sparkle plastic frame with rhinestone details, bonus cheetah-print felt letters that say “My Potty Board.”  Bohemian Baby has cappuccino fleece board with sketchy paisley accents, greywashed oak frame, white lettering.  Happy Primaries has bands of bold color in its fleece board to differentiate the days, white lettering, and a classic oak frame.  And Soft ‘n Sweet has a ditsy lavender-patterned fleece background, Chalk White frame with vintage bead texture, and dreamy, whispery pink and blue lettering.

Native Gardening: A Guide for Cold Stratification
It's nearly January, which means that it's time for me to start stratification for my native seeds.
Many native seeds have a built-in dormancy mechanism which will prevent germination until it is broken either naturally by weather, or artificially via cold/moist stratification in the refrigerator. This is a guide for the refrigeration method.
It's best done about 2-3 months before spring if you plan on starting the seeds indoors, or 2-3 months before your last frost date if sowing outdoors (depending on germination requirements). This year I'm using peat moss but you can substitute it with moist sand or damp paper towels.
Choosing Your Plants
One thing to consider before buying native seeds is how successful they will be once planted in your garden. The best way to determine this is by going outside and seeing what grows naturally in the yard.
For example, my yard has mostly shade-loving plants like the Common Blue Violet, Bloodroot, and Witchgrass, along with some hardier, more tolerant species like Blue Wood-Aster and Common Milkweed. Sun-loving plants like goldenrod are present but restricted to the edges of the property. Despite having no natural water source, I have seen a few water-dwelling species pop up as well.
This means that I have a pretty moist/shady backyard and that I should focus on species that either prefer these conditions or are very tolerant of them.
Remember to choose species that grow naturally in your biosphere. Some native seed vendors will provide range maps which will show you where certain plants exist in the wild. This is important because the entire point of native gardening is to support your local ecology and wildlife.
This year I'm raising Virginia Strawberry, Early Goldenrod, Sundial Lupine, Columbine, Spotted-Touch-Me-Not, Bloodroot, and Highbush Cranberry. In addition to pollinators like bees, wasps. and butterflies, these plants will be beneficial to songbirds, hummingbirds, and small mammals.
I always buy seeds from Prairie Moon Nursery. I've had great experiences with them and they even offer native range maps and germination instructions for each species.
Materials:
Tumblr media
One bag of peat moss
A mixing bowl
A pitcher or measuring cup of water
Lidded jars or sealable plastic bags (1 per species)
A permanent marker and painters tape for labels.
Seeds of your choosing
Instructions:
Fill your mixing bowl with peat moss.
Slowly add water and mix with your hands until the moss is moist but not soaked. You should be able to form it into a ball.
Press peat moss into each container.
Sprinkle in the seeds. I covered the larger seeds with more peat moss, but the smaller seeds were just sprinkled on top so that I can actually find them when it's time to plant.
Seal containers and label each with the species name, length of time required in the fridge, (usually 60-90 days), and if it requires double dormancy.***
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this, place the containers in the fridge for 60-90 days, depending on the germination requirements. You should check on them weekly to make sure they don't dry out or grow mold. If a seed starts sprouting during stratification, remove it from the container and plant it in a starter pot.
After the 60-90 day period, the seeds will be ready to germinate. Move them into starter pots with soil or plant them directly into your garden bed.
I prefer starting my plants in Peat Pots, which are compostable and can be planted directly in the ground. This allows me to raise my seedlings indoors without the threat of wildlife or competition while preventing me from disturbing their root system when transplanting.
***Note on Double Dormancy
Some plants have double dormancy requirements for germination and can be more challenging to grow. This means that the plant will need a period of cold moisture, then warm moisture, and finally another period of cold moisture before they will germinate. Bloodroot, American Cranberrybush, and Spotted-Touch-Me-Not are all species that need double dormancy.

February in the garden:
Tumblr media
Lots of flowers already.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
And more soon to come.
Tumblr media
I'm super excited that the hardy cyclamen made it through another year and seem to be thriving. Lots of flower buds too.
Tumblr media
Two of my rhubarbs are still completely dormant, but two are already coming up.
Might as well try something...
Tumblr media
Today I emptied a black plastic pot for the otlher one, which should warm up more in the sun.
Tumblr media
Overwintering my plants in the shed has worked well, overall. One dried out and one was too wet, but that also happened when I took them to work.
Tumblr media
I pruned some berry bushes over the weekend and found a lot of blue raspberry branches had rooted at the tip, and this time I actually pulled them up and put them in pots. And while I was at it, I took cuttings of the Japanese wineberry and the Black Lace elder. No idea if it will work, but hey, worth a try.
Today, I talked to the guy who organises the local plant market in April, which I sold at several times when I had my own nursery, and again last year for the nursery I was employed at, and was like, "I'm taking a break from professional horticulture, but if you'll have me with whatever I can grow at home, I'd still love to come."
And since he said yes, I'll have to see how much more I can grow by the end of April.
Might also be useful to start posting to my old social media accounts, which I made for my nursery, again, to get the word out.

My miniature doll room
Tumblr media
Hello and welcome to the doll room!
This was a special project made for me by my mom. She's a Barbie collector and loves crafting little room boxes for them with tiny realistic accessories. When she asked if I wanted a room box, I was tempted to say no because I'm not into Barbies or dolls their size, but then I saw, fully formed in my imagination, a miniature doll room. And she delivered. Pretty much everything you see in the above photo was made by her: the crib, the chair, the curtain, and even the potted plants!
I expected nothing less than this. I come from several generations of doll collectors, enthusiasts, and artists. My mom was already a talented miniature maker by the time I was born, having taken classes in making them for several years. Her classmates even made her this mini nursery to celebrate my birth! She also made this lovely Victorian dollhouse. She's the real deal when it comes to all things mini.
Tumblr media
The Barbie here in the comfy chair represents me, and the comfy clothes I wear at home. She's holding her newest doll, a Zuru My Mini Baby. I'm glad that at least she has a silicone reborn baby doll, because I certainly will never be able to afford a life-sized one for myself. So I live vicariously through her in that way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes Briana comes by for a visit! She's very careful when playing with the dolls, since some are vintage and fragile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the left is the chair my mom made. On the right are the mini American Girl posters. The reborn baby is in her stroller.
Tumblr media
Most of her dolls stand on their shelves. My mom acquired most of these. I contributed the dolls on the bottom shelf, above the compartments. The one on the left is mini Isabelle Palmer (an American Girl crossover with McDonald's happy meal toys).
The next shelf above them is the American Girl doll shelf. These all came from Mega Bloks Construct sets. In the middle is Kit with her scooter and her dog Grace riding inside. Above that shelf are the tiny dolls. I bought the little porcelain doll on the left at last year's local doll show. And the top shelf is Disney and fantasy characters. I don't actually have any Disney dolls, but these look cute in the mini room, and I'm definitely not going for total accuracy here. That would be impossible.
Tumblr media
Here's the bay window. My mom made the flowers and the green plant in the middle. She showed me how she made the colorful flowers and it's so easy, but my mind is still blown at how amazing they turned out.
The window is clear plastic. I added the scene out the window. It's from a calendar, and is a view of the San Francisco volcanic field in northern Arizona. It's a somewhat close resemblance to what I see when I look out my house's windows.
Tumblr media
On the other side is the crib with the baby dolls. The three blonde babies are Barbie babies. I have no idea what the baby on the left is.
Tumblr media
On this end of the crib are vintage Tiny Blessings dolls.
Tumblr media
And the animal shelf is above the crib.

Just a little piece of gen domestichesters fluff about Sam taking up gardening and Dean adopting another dog. Set in season 15 during that unknown period of time between episodes 19 & 20, or maybe it's canon divergent and episode 20 never happened (whichever makes you happiest).
No pairing, no ship, just fluff.
Words: 2746
Read it on AO3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So I was looking into the history of the power plant.”
“Of course you were.” Dean deadpanned.
“And, turns out that it was never actually abandoned like we’d thought because it was never actually in use as a real power plant. As far as I can tell, it was built to cover up the mechanical equipment that runs the bunker and isn’t even hooked into the local grid.”
“Fascinating.” Dean said, with sarcasm so dry Sam completely missed it.
“That’s what I thought. So I came up to check it out, you know, see how the systems were set up, just in case something ever goes wrong… again. But what I found was,” Sam opened the double doors that creaked loudly in the cavernous space that they step into.
It was like a cathedral, vast and empty with a vaulted ceiling thirty feet high. It was saved from being gloomy, all that grey stone and dark ironwork rafters, by two of the walls which were striped with four sets of floor to ceiling windows and there were large skylights above. Most surprising to Dean was the fact that they were all, miraculously, unbroken. The rest of the space was mostly empty, with just a few bulky pieces of equipment that looked like they were part of the bunker’s various mechanical systems. That looked like all that had been there, at least that was all before Sam had gotten to the space. Now, there were two rows of what looked to Dean like black, plastic bathtubs standing near the south side of the room. And there were long fluorescent tube light fixtures suspended above them.
“That doesn’t look like mechanical equipment.”
Sam laughed. “It’s not. But the space was completely empty when I found it. But it had electricity and a sprinkler system and I think it’s actually heated. Or, at least, there’s ductwork that seems to come up from below.”
They had been wandering closer to the tubs as Sam talked. As they got up to them, Dean could see that they were each filled with rich, dark soil. There was also a network of PVC pipes that ran along over the top of the tubs, with red, shut off valves and nozzles every so often.
Dean sneezed. It had come up so suddenly he hadn’t even had time to cover his mouth, just turned to the side. The noise echoing back to him from every corner.
“I’ve swept up, but it’s still pretty dusty, I guess.”
Dean sniffled and asked, “Did you do all this?”
“Yeah. I’ve been working on it for the last couple months. The tubs are 150 gallon stock tanks that I got from the Tractor Supply over in Smith Center. But I scrounged most of the rest of the supplies. I set up the lights because, even with all the windows, I just don’t know if the plants will get enough sunlight. And I flushed the irrigation system throughly and tested it for lead, since, you know the building was built back in the 30’s. But everything is clear and yeah.” Sam looked at Dean. “What do you think?”
“You gonna be growing pot in here or something?”
Sam laughed again and shook his head. “I was thinking more, vegetables and herbs.”
“Oh.”
“Try not to sound so disappointed.”
“Well, I’m not going to lie, I’d be more excited about pot. But this is impressive, Sammy.” “You think?”
“Yeah. You put a lot of work into this. Why didn’t you ask for help?”
Sam shrugged. “I don’t know. I just started working on it and then it was just… something to do. Plus I didn’t want you trying to claim it and fill it up with cars or something.”
Dean looked into the tubs. “You plant anything yet?”
“No, I actually need to go pick up the plants and thought you might want to ride over with me? We can get lunch at Pete’s and then swing by the nursery?”
“Yeah, okay. Barbecue sounds great.”
They were almost out the door when Dean sneezed again. “Damn. I think you need to sweep again.”
Down in the garage, they both got into the Impala, doors squeaking and banging shut in unison. Dean had the key in the ignition and was just about to start her up when he stopped and looked at Sam.
“How many plants are you planning on getting?”
Sam narrowed his eyes, Dean could practically see him going through his mental list. They both turned and looked in the backseat at the same time.
“Uh…” Sam started.
“Why don’t we take the truck instead?”
“Yeah, probably a good idea.”
So they took the old pick-up truck. It was a 1946 Chevrolet 3100 in Morat Green. Sam thought the name sounded made up, but he knew better than to argue about classic vehicles with his brother.
It was an easy fifteen minute drive from Lebanon to Smith Center. By the time they got to Pete’s and parked, Sam had not only run through his list of plants he wanted to get, but had gone on a bit too long (in Dean’s opinion) about the merits of various varieties of tomato and lettuce. He’d also mentioned several herbs that Dean was about ninety percent certain weren’t used for cooking.
“Some of them are medicinal but the other have more…” Sam lowered his voice as the stepped into the restaurant, “esoteric uses.”
Dean gave him a look.
“We’ve depleted most of our supply of components. And I don’t know if you’ve noticed but there aren’t many suppliers of those things that are still willing to sell to us. So it would be a lot easier if I could just grow what we needed.”
“Okay, settle down. This is your project, you can get whatever plants you want.”
They changed the topic of conversation as they sat down, deciding without needing to discuss it, that they’d rather debate who would win in a fight between themselves and various comic book superheroes and villains. The lapsed mostly into silence when their food arrived, with only the occasional obscene groan from Dean around a mouthful of double bacon cheeseburger.
“Dude.”
“What? It’s good.” Dean asked still chewing.
“So is my salad, but you don’t hear me moaning like Meg Ryan.” “Yeah, ‘cause no one gets orgasmic over a salad, Sam.”
“Just, try not to get the cops called on us. And don’t talk with your mouth full.”
“Fine, Mom.”
Shaking his head, Sam rolled his eyes, but he couldn’t quite stop the corners of his mouth from pulling up into a smile as they finished off their lunch.
It was a short drive across town to the greenhouse. To be fair, everything in Smith Center was a short drive, it wasn’t a big town. When they pulled into the parking lot there was a banner string up on one side of the entrance to the greenhouse. Several families with kids were gathered by it.
“Adopt-a-Pet?”
“Go, check it out, play with some puppies or something. I’ll just be a few minutes anyway.” Sam said as he wandered inside.
Dean made his way over and was having just as much fun watching the kids coo and squeal and beg their parents for a puppy or a kitten as he was looking at the baby animals.
There were older animals too, a bunch of cats and a few dogs. One of the dogs was laying down in its crate, and while its ears perked up at every loud sound, it wasn’t watching the chaos around it as much as the other dogs. Dean crouched down and peered at it through the bars of the crate. It was black and white with longish fur.
“Interested in adopting a pet?” a woman asked him when she was done handing a clipboard of paperwork to one of the families.
“I’ve already got a dog. I just thought I look while my brother’s getting stuff for his garden.”
“Well, each animal has a tag on their crate with information like breed, sex, age, and if theyre good with kids or other animals.”
Dean looked and saw the tag on the crate in front of him. “Otis, huh?”
The dog’s head perked up immediately.
“Guess that’s you.” Dean said. He read the tag and looked at the dog and then read the tag again.
It had taken Sam a lot longer than he’d anticipated in the greenhouse because they didn’t have a couple of the varieties that he’d really wanted, so he had to decide on what to get instead. But once he checked out, he had several packets of seeds tucked into his pocket and two long flats of young plants, and was feeling pretty good about his choices. Dean was nowhere to be seen when he carried the first group of plants out and slid them into the back of the truck, but when he came out with the rest of them, he could see Dean’s head through the back window of the truck. Plants safely stowed, he closed the tailgate and walked around to the passenger door.
A loud bark when he opened the door made him jump. Sitting on the bench seat next to his brother was a border collie.
“Dean?”
“Sam.”
“There’s a dog in the truck.”
“You always were observant.”
“Dean, why is there a dog in the truck?”
“His name is Otis. Otis, say hello to Sam.”
Otis chuffed.
“Okay.” Sam looked at the dog and then at his brother. “Did, did you adopt a dog?”
Dean just smiled at him and ruffled the fur on Otis’ head as he started the truck up. “Yes I did. Come on, let’s get him home and introduce him to Miracle.”
There was much barking and vigorous wagging of tails and lots of butt sniffing. After a few minutes, Dean declared the introduction a success and went to help Sam carry the plants up to the power plant.
“I can’t believe you got another dog.”
“Sam, he’s blind and had been at the shelter for over a year. I couldn’t leave him there. Plus, look how happy Miracle is. Now he won’t be completely alone when we have to go out. He’s got a buddy.”
“Yeah, no, I get that, I–I do. But, I just… I just think this is the sort of thing that we should have talked about first.”
“Hey, I didn’t hear you asking me about turn the upstairs into a conservatory, but I’m okay with it. I think it’s great that you’ve got a new hobby.” He sat the flat of seedlings down next to the planters and sneezed. “Shit. Man, are there cats up here or something?”
Sam looked around and shrugged.
Dean sneezed again.
“There is definitely something up here that’s not agreeing with you. Go on downstairs, I’ve got this.”
“Yeah,” Dean sniffled. “I’m gonna go take the dogs for a walk before dinner. Don’t stay up here too late, There’s still, like, half a lasagna in the fridge and I think there’s even some salad left over from last night.”
He sneezed again before he got to the door.
Sam pulled the seed packets out of his pocket and flipped through them. There was yarrow, angelica, burdock, belladonna, chamomile, and catnip. He looked back at the door before glancing over to where there was a large cardboard box tucked between two pieces of equipment that Sam was about 80% certain were part of the air handling system. After a moment he started spreading the plants and seed packets around in the various tubs of dirt, plotting out what to grow where.
The next few weeks passed quickly. Miracle adopted Otis faster than Dean had, and it was rare to ever see one without the other. Sam took them out running in the mornings and Dean took them for rides into town or out to some field or another where they went on long meandering walks in the afternoons while Sam tended to his growing garden. He took careful notes and photos, and adjusted the timing of the lights and the sprinkler system. Dean, who still sneezed at least once every time he went up there, kept his visits short and mostly left Sam to his gardening. Meal times were when he was most likely to come up, looking to make sure that his brother was eating.
“Hey, Sammy. Lunchtime, come and get it! Wow! It’s looking lush up here. Got anything edible yet?”
“Uh yeah, there’s some lettuce over there but I just want to get this set… Shit!” He swore as the sprayer nozzle he’s been adjusting snapped off in his hand. Water started to gush out of the pipe even as he clamped his hands down tight over the opening. “Ah! Get the, uh, the thing... turn it off!”
Dean rushed over and followed Sam’s gaze to a red shut off valve a little ways down the line. “Yep! Hang on. Got it.” He cranked the valve down tight and the water pressure died.
Sam shook his hands, flinging drops of water into the planter. “Thanks.”
A tiny, high pitched, squeaky sort of noise came from between the tub where Sam was working and the one behind it.
“What…” Dean began as he leaned over to look between the tubs.
“Well, no point in trying to fix this on an empty stomach. Let’s go eat!” Sam said loudly as he wiped his hands on his jeans and then all but herded Dean towards the door.
“Wait, what was that?”
“It was just the pipes, you know how pipes are. What’s for lunch?”
“Stop pushing me!”
Sam stopped but stayed between Dean and his garden. There was another squeak.
“Sam?” Dean said, glaring at his brother. Before either of them could say anything else Dean’s attention was drawn to a tiny little ball of grey and black striped fluff that toddled out from around the tub that Sam had been working on.
“I knew it.”
Another tiny mewl came from the other end of the garden and Sam’s eyes went wide.
“Dude, how many kittens are in here?”
Sam deflated with a sigh, “Five.”
“Five?!”
“And the mom cat.”
“Were you seriously just going to keep pretending like you didn’t know what was making me sneeze?”
“No! No. I was just waiting until the kittens were old enough to find them homes.”
“But why not just tell me?”
“I didn’t want it to be a big deal, I figured you’re not up here much anyway and it’s a quiet, safe place for them and, well, they’re cute.”
“But I still don’t get why you were lying to me.”
“I didn’t really lie… yeah, okay, I lied. I’m sorry. I guess I was afraid that you’d want them gone.”
Dean looked offended. “I’m not a monster, Sam.”
“I know! But I also know how much you hate cats, so…”
“I don’t hate cats.”
“Yes, you do. You say it all the time.”
“I don’t actually mean it.”
Sam just looked at him, exasperated and at a loss. A squeaky mewl, louder and more demanding than before, sounded from their feet. The first kitten had reached Sam’s foot and was starting to climb up his pants leg.
Dean leaned down and carefully unhooked it’s claws from Sam’s jeans before standing up, holding it gently in his hands.
He looked at it.
It looked at him.
It cried loudly.
“Have you named them?”
“Pfft, no.”
“Cool, so I can name them.”
Sam sighed and looked closer at the kitten. “That one’s Doc.”
Dean scrunched up his nose and looked at him. “Like the dwarf?”
“No. It’s short for Burdock. It’s a plant.” He looked over to where the other kitten was sitting, still next to the tubs. “That one is Cam, short for Chamomile. And the others are Yarrow, Catnip or Nip, and Belladonna, like the plant, not the pornstar.” He added quickly at the hopeful arching of Dean’s eyebrow. “The mom is Angelica.”
“Uh huh. You big softy.” Dean smiled at him.
“Shut up.”
Dean chuckled as he handed the kitten, who had started to squirm, over to Sam. “They can stay, just, uh, up here, okay? Now, I’m going to go wash my hands and eat. Come on.”
Sam placed a quick kiss on Doc’s head before setting him gently down on the ground and following after his brother.
Namjooning - Namjoon & Grace
Tumblr media
It was cute to watch Namjoon buzz his little socks off in the passenger seat of her car. He already had accumulated a list of plants that he thought would be suited for her apartment and for her needs, especially since she was going to be getting a cat soon. He had extensively researched local shops and suppliers, had done his own research into each plant and how it needed taking care of, which ones could survive on their own essentially and which ones would bloom lovely with the right amount of care.
When Grace had gone to Namjoon for some advice over what plants to get for her apartment (they literally lived in the same complex) and which ones wouldn’t be harmful to her future cat, she didn’t realise it would become a thing. She knew he loved plants, his little bonsai tree was proof of that and the amount of plants that used to live at the dorm as well under his care meant she was putting her trust in the right person.
So he had got his list together, found a trusted shop to go to and arranged with the owners for a private hour for them to buy plants. It had amused her greatly at how serious he was taking this.
After parking in the back and making their way to the main front door, it was clear that the shop in question was a plant lover's dream. Named the Gardener’ Wife, run by a gardener and his florist wife, it had been in Seoul for the past fourteen years. And it was clear they were going to be the experts in the field.
For Grace, she just showed her bank card and let them have it.
She found a cart full of Pothos, zanzibar gem, areca palm, spider plant for the cat, and so much more. Her apartment was going to look more like the garden shop than it was an apartment. But at least they were easy to look after and she would only have to give them a water when they needed it.
“Thank you so much,” Grace said as she took her bank card back. “Namjoon is going to have fun now trying to find the right home for all these.”
Namjoon blinked from where he had been looking at a handmade pot, small enough to fit in his hands but large enough to hold a plant. “Isn’t this cute?” he asked, holding up the pot for Grace to see.
“You’re cute,” she gave as a response and grinned when the dimples came out. “I guess we’ll have that as well.”
The pot found its precious place on Namjoon’s lap and all the plants were secured in the boot. It smelt like a garden nursery in the car, a mix of nature and soil, as well as plastic from the watering can Namjoon had made her get.
“Thank you for doing this for me,” she said as she put the car in neutral when they reached a heavy amount of traffic on the way back to their complex.
“More than welcome, Gigi. Thank you for my pot,” he said as he held it tightly in his hands.
“Just don’t break it. Maybe we should have got you a plastic one,” she teased as she glanced at the younger man next to her. He may be her leader but he was still five years younger than her and you could tell that by the way he glared at her.
“If this is what you call Namjooning, then I might Namjoon a bit more with you,” she added once the traffic started.
“I’d be more than happy for you to join me as I Namjoon,” he chuckled as he looked at the pot in his hands then towards the woman he had met all those years ago when he was an early trainee. “Thank you as well, Gigi.”
“For what?”
“For always believing in me.”
“Anytime Namjoon, anytime.”
went out and cleaned up the pots on the porch. pruned the crapes. pulled out all the dead succs and found that tiny nussbauers and orostachys are popping up again and a few of my old bronze graptosedums survived after all. and of course the graptopetalums are furiously blooming, undeterred even after being snowed on. it's quite a sight to see the big ones i potted with the crapes blooming so well underneath all the new leaves. i need to get a pic after i sweep the concrete.
one tiny green onion survived and the chives also. i had to throw out the pot with my purslane in it, soil and all, because it was really old plastic that was breaking into a thousand pieces at the slightest touch. but purslane makes a million seeds that spread really easily, and i originally got the seeds i had from ones that were growing rogue on the lawn anyway, so maybe i can get some more this year. their flowers aren't super showy like the cultivars they sell at nurseries, but i just love their cute little sprouts…
next i will sweep and empty the hose (left in the sand all winter) and then i think i will go to the hardware store and see what babies they have :3c
there are a lot of interesting plants that pop up on the lawn and i wish they wouldn't come through and poison them all. it's not like the lawn is well maintained anyway since my landlord lives in another state. the turf roots are rotting because they overwater it, so there are always a lot of mushrooms. lately it's earth stars, but there's one other one i'm never able to identify because the mower guy always slices it up before i can see what it looks like intact and get an ID. maybe if i can catch him i'll ask him to just pull the whole thing out and toss it on the porch next time.
Speaking of indoor gardening, here are some things I've been recycling for my garden. I love garbage <3
(I started collecting most of these things after I started my garden. A lot of the pots actively in use are reused as well. The hydroponic jars I did have to buy specifically for gardening purposes because hydroponic supplies are a little more specific and a bit pricier but in my opinion it's totally worth it. Though you can use any large mouth glass jars you have and use coffee filters with cut out holes for the roots. Hydroponic gardening is my absolute favorite method of gardening and much more disability-friendly in my experience)
Tumblr media
1. Coffee tins. I just need to drill a few holes in the bottom and I've got myself a tomato planter. My mom used to bring these home from work when her coworkers were done with them so I have a few more. Also I recommend looking into your local plant nurseries and looking for recycled pots, my local nursery has an area dedicated to plant pot recycling and you can probably get some for cheap. But you can always get creative and use all kinds of things so long as they've got drainage holes
[Image ID: a large red coffee can with black illustrations and big white text on it that says "classic roast coffee 100% Arabica ground colombian. My hand is in the photo because I'm holding it up and the gray wood floors are in the background. End ID]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Plastic spinach and muffin containers. As well as those plastic strawberry containers! You just need to poke holes in the bottom with an awl (if there are no holes already) and widen them a bit, and if it's got a lid that's perfect for germination! The bigger containers are perfect for seedling starter planters as well.
2.5. Egg cartons can be cut up and used for seed pots too, as well as those paper drink holders. Just make sure you poke holes
[Image ID: a plastic spinach container full of soil. There's a brown cardboard divider in the middle and a yellow gnat trap against the divider, sticking out of he soil. The container is on a metal shelf in my greenhouse tent. The next image shows a large plastic muffin container with cardboard toilet paper tubes inside. Next to it is a stack of egg cartons with the lids missing and a stack of drink holder cups cut in quarters so the cups are separate. These things are on a gray shelf next to the tent up against a window. End ID]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Toilet paper/paper towel tubes. If you cut four slits at the bottom and fold them in on each other, you can close the bottom and make them into seedling starter pots. I put a few in a lettuce container (pictured above) and I plan to use it for veggie sprouts <3 these are fun to make too, just make sure you widen the hole at the bottom of each one for drainage. I still gotta do that. But those seedling starter trays online can be expensive so this is a way you can make one for way cheaper. It's not perfect but it'll get the job done :)
[Image ID: three images of a cardboard box full of toilet paper tubes and two images of a plastic lettuce container full of seedling starter pots i made from those tubes. All the tubes are cut at the bottom to make flaps and those flaps are folded in on each other to make a bottom for the pot. In to of the images my hand is visible because im holding one tube up to the camera to show how I folded it. The gray floors are visible in the images in the background. End ID]
