When did you start designing masks? Is Zimi your first mask project?

I started designing and producing masks in 2013. Zimi is my third entrepreneurial project. It is a continuation of my second entrepreneurial project (the first generation of frame masks). I call Zimi the second generation of frame masks. I have received financial investment for every entrepreneurial project, and Zimi is no exception. I own 20% of Zimi. I am the founder of Zimi.

What makes the Zimi mask different from other masks?

Zimi is a frame mask. In my mind, it is a mask that is close to perfect, although it is not perfect yet.

It allows better-performing materials to play the greatest role because its effective filtering space is large enough.

It has a frame support, so it is more suitable for repeated wear.

Can you discuss your decision to make the Zimi mask available in multiple sizes? It seems like there are more size options for Zimi than most other masks. What sizes are available and are there additional sizes in the works?

As of December 2024, Zimi masks have 4 frames, and the frames for XS and XL sizes are completed within a month. That means we will have 6 sizes next year, but we will also eliminate some sizes or models that are not selling well. We are a small R&D company, and too many products will bring us a great burden, which is why Zimi masks cannot be mass-produced, have low production efficiency, and are expensive. Our advantage is that we constantly adjust our products based on market feedback and design masks that everyone needs.

Will the Zimi mask be effective if it gets wet? If a Zimi mask is wet inside from condensation, can it be reused?

The mask is wet, this needs to be classified. What is this liquid? Water vapor produced by human breathing, or sweat. The level of pure water content in this liquid, such as the water vapor exhaled by the human body, is very pure. Because it is a steam type, it has little effect on the static electricity of the mask. Pure water is not conductive, and the mask will not filter water vapor. After the mask is wet, the resistance will increase, and the mask can continue to be used after drying. If it is sweat, because sweat contains other substances, it has a greater impact on the static electricity of the mask. Zimi’s sealing ring material can absorb sweat. If too much sweat is on the filter material, it is recommended to replace it.

How many times can the plastic “skeleton” of a Zimi mask be used?

I have a frame that has been used for 2 years. The frame is a flexible plastic material. If you don’t deliberately damage it, it can be used for a long time. In China, many people started to say that they were short of frames. Now everyone who uses Zimi masks will say “I have too many frames and I need filters.”

I notice your masks are rated for KN95 but they have a headstrap option. Does a KN95 with a headstrap equate to an N95?

In the global mask market, everyone is concerned about the difference between KN95 and N95. In fact, many people have misunderstandings. KN95 is the filtration level in China’s GB2626 standard. GB2626 masks were customized by 3M in China 20 years ago. They brought NIOSH 42CFR PART84 to China, that is, starting from GB2626-2006, the performance of KN95 is completely consistent with N95. The leakage test of GB2626 adopts the EN149 method, so China’s GB2626 standard is a combination of NIOSH 42CFR PART84 and European standard EN149. After 13 years of optimization, the performance of various indicators in the latest standard GB2626-2019 is improving. In fact, it is higher than most of the performance indicators of the US NIOSH and EU EN149. Why do people think KN95 is not good? It is because many Chinese mask companies only produce barely qualified products for cost and production efficiency. China’s national market supervision department inspects GB2626 masks sold on the market every year, and it is not like what everyone says that KN95 masks are not regulated. However, China’s random inspection of KN95 does not involve leakage, so many KN95 masks do not pay attention to leakage performance. Back to this question, headloop KN95 = N95. In order to ensure the tightness of N95, N95 does not have ear hooks. Most earloop KN95s are not as tight as headloop KN95s, but it is not absolute, so I really hope that NIOSH will test Zimi’s earloop masks.

How many times do you recommend reusing a Zimi mask before replacement?

I recently posted an article on the Reddit forum about “How long should I wear a mask?” The use time of a mask is not fixed. For masks used in industrial environments, most manufacturers will tell you that if the resistance increases, it needs to be replaced. At this time, the increase in resistance may be caused by particle blockage, water vapor blockage, or both. In civilian environments, the increase in resistance is due to water vapor blockage, while particle blockage is relatively rare. The number of particles in the air is much less than in industrial dust environments. If it is blocked by water vapor, it can continue to be used after ventilation and drying. Explain the structure of a Zimi mask with replaceable mask fabric

Sketchbook Supply Recs!

Hi y’all, Since I’ve been posting more sketchbook pages recently, I thought I would share some of my favorite supplies. My recommendations are tailored to creating a user-friendly, portable kit mainly focused on ink and markers. I’ve found that having a kit like this makes me more likely to regularly develop my sketchbook, which I view as one of the most important parts of keeping one. None of these recommendations are sponsored or affiliated, I just hope that by sharing what supplies I enjoy, others can find new things to try. Keep reading under the cut!

I often find that products marketed towards the stationary and note-taking/organization niches perform better at lower prices for frequent sketchbook use than products targeted specifically towards the art and illustration community. Don’t shy away from products in office-supply stores just because it doesn’t say ‘for art’ on it. 

I also recommend refillable pens whenever possible. They usually offer more customization in ink color and nib size. Refillable options produce less plastic waste than disposable options. Refillable designs tend to have more ergonomic designs, with larger barrels and better weight balance that minimize hand discomfort. If you draw frequently, this is something worth considering to avoid damaging your hand joints in the long term. In addition, they’re built with durability in mind, allowing them to be thrown in your bag or pencil case without worry. 

Darker ink drawing pens make up the core of my kit, so I’ve tried a variety of options and usually have at least a few of these in my bag. Currently, the Pilot Kakuno Pocket Fountain Pen (around $10-19 depending where you purchase from) is my favorite. I love the line quality this pen can produce– the barrel is a bit larger than most pens and the body and cap give it a good balance in the hand. This pen also takes cartridge refills, allowing you to easily switch colors between refills without the mess. There are a wide range of colors available for this pen, and the thinner water-based ink formula is easy to work with. The ink dries down matte, so it scans accurately without digital manipulation. It also comes in a few different nib sizes with different cosmetic options/color ways for the pen body. Though fountain pens typically have a slight learning curve in learning how to draw with them, I found this one especially easy to work with since the nib has an etched design that shows when you’re holding it properly. 

The Pilot EnerGel Alloy Body Ballpoint Pen (around $8-10) is another of my favorites. The metal body of the pen is a slightly larger barrel size with a nice weight balance which allows smooth lines without hand discomfort. They’re also refilled with cartridges, which come in a few different colors and point sizes; I enjoy the 1.0 mm the most for this pen. The water-based gel ink formula for this pen is one of the best I’ve tried, as it’s very smooth, dries fast which minimizes smudging, and scans well. The V5/V7 Ballpoint Pen from Pilot (available in multi-packs for around $1-2 per pen) has a similar ink formula in varied nib sizes. They aren’t refillable, but they last a long time. I think they’re worthwhile, especially as a beginner friendly, widely available option.

Muji Pens (available online for about $2 per pen) are another great ballpoint gel option. They come in an impressive range of colors, thicknesses, and cap types. They can also be refilled with cartridges. I think the finer 0.38 and 0.5 nib sizes are my favorites from this line. 

If you prefer a brush-tip style pen to ballpoint or fountain pens, I really enjoy the Tombow Fudenosuke or Pentel Pocket Brush. The Fudenosuke (around $3-4) is a felt-tip brush pen. The nib is a perfect firmness to get a variety of line weights with ease. I find that this makes it well-suited to thumbnails and other fast sketching. They come in a smaller range of well-formulated, pigmented colors, which consistently scan well. They aren’t refillable, but last a long time, which I think makes them worth it. 

The Pentel Pocket Brush (around $7 with two refills included) is a bristle brush pen. The fibers are very smooth and can achieve a wide variety of textures and line weights. It has a bit more of a learning curve than some of my other recommendations, but that’s mostly if you haven’t inked with a brush previously– it’s relatively easy to get comfortable with. It’s also refillable with cartridges and has a few different color options. This pen is one of my favorites for figure drawing. 

Though it’s not a pen, I also think the Rotring Mechanical Drafting Pencil (around $20-30) deserves a mention for folks who prefer sketching in pencil. The metal body and textured grip create a good weight balance that makes it write exceptionally smooth. It also takes standard graphite and other colorful options which give an equivalent level of customization to the previously described pens. 

Markers and colorful supplies are another important element of your kit. At the top of the list for me is a couple of different highlighters and felt tip pens. I love Zebra Mildliners, especially the double-ended ones with the super fine/brush tip combo (usually less than $1/pen when purchased in packs of 5 or more). They’re easy to draw with and can be a great choice for adding value or colors. The color range (mostly pastel and creamy colors) is also impressive. Stabilo makes a similar style of pen called the pointMax (M 0.8) (usually about $2 a pen, but also comes in packs) that comes in some darker, more vibrant colors. I prefer the thicker size since they tend to last longer, but they make some thinner liner versions of this pen (called point88) with the same ink formula that are also good. If you like a thicker marker, Chunky highlighters are the way to go. Stabilo Boss (about $1.50 in a multi-pack) and Staedtler Textsurfer (about $1.70) are great options that come in a variety of colors, with Stabilo coming in creamy pastels and Staedtler coming in more bright and neon colors.  

Within this category, novelty supplies can also be a good colorful addition. Mixed color pencils can be really fun for line drawing. Koh-i-Noor makes some of my favorites (about $4 but they last a long time) with earth tones, primaries, and neons. Gelly Roll pens (about $1.50 /pen) also are a nice novelty pen while still being high quality. They have a good color range with metallic, neon, glitter, and other finishes. 

On top of drawing supplies, some washi tape, stickers, double-stick tape, and cool paper also make fun additions. It’s harder to make specific recommendations for specific washi tape and stickers, however, supporting your local stationery/craft/paper good stores and favorite artists and designers who make and sell it is always a good move! I have some from Natalie Andrewson, Alex Tomlinson of Pigeon Post, and Starmint Art that I use all the time. The best ones complement the imagery and colors you use. Be curious, collect, and repurpose things that make you excited!

Presents to myself from the Christmas Market

Plus bonus winter wonderland view from my living room window!

I got to be there for "baby's first christmas market" as I went to the market with a friend of mine and her baby. That was pretty cute! The market was gorgeous as well, though unfortunately it was bloody cold and my back stiffed up on me. That was less... pleasant...

The christmas market itself was great though! They always have very artistic stalls with lots of handmade stuff. I had so much fun looking at all the beautiful things! If someone handed me 1000€ I could have easily spent it there and brought presents for everyone. As it is, I only bought one present and some presents for myself. Because I can!

I got myself some very mori kei-esque decor. The first purchase was a felted fairy/fae creature in a brown garment with a hazelnut hat. They look so precious! The second was a medium sized wooden stamp. I've actually got a bit of a collection started here - I bought four such hand whittled wooden stamps years ago as a teenager, because they look so gorgeous. Actually, I have a stamp collection in general but these are extra special with the wood used and their natural look. The texture and shapes are very pleasing. I decided to add stamp number 5 to the collection.

On the second (and final) lap of the christmas market I also had to buy myself a big wooded plate stamp. It's SO gorgeous!! I couldn't believe my eyes almost when I first saw it. And it was surprisingly affordable, for it's quality and size. I would have estimated about double the prize. I decided I'm worth to spend money on and took the beautiful plate home! ♥

I'm planning to do a "stamping session" sometimes next year. Hold me to it!!

The packaging, consumer goods, construction, automotive, and other segments make up the plastic additives market. In 2023, the market share accounting was dominated by the construction segment. In terms of both volume and value, the construction sector is anticipated to use the most plastic additives.

CBA, ECBA and their variants

the ECBA (enhanced combat body armour) was an updated version of the conveniently named CBA (combat body armour) of the early 1980s, arriving in 1991, just in time for the first gulf war; though it's worth noting that few ECBA sets had arrived, so much of the early high-intensity fighting was done wearing CBA sets.

the CBA had suffered a few major design failiures, most notably its lacking ballistic protection and its lack of modularity for future upgrades. the ECBA still suffered the latter, but solved the former with the addition of a large pocket on the front and back, for holding of two identical ceramic plates.

here you can see the two ECBA covers in my collection, the left being a 1999 production DPM cover, and the right being a 2013 production MTP cover. though there were also desert DPM and UN patterened ECBA covers. both with button flaps for rank slides affixed to the front pocket, something the CBA was missing.

it might surprise some that the ECBA was still in production in 2013, especially considering the osprey armour system had been issued as replacement since 2006, but ECBA was still issued to rear echelon forces and those not expecting to see high-intensity conflict, such as those deployed during the manchester riots in 2011.

both the CBA and ECBA have the same vest opening and closure system, with two layers of velcro and a metal press stud at the top to ensure the armour is worn flat around the body. here you can also see that the armour is separated into three distinct pieces, all connected at the top of the back: the left wing, the right wing and the back pannel. the zip running along the top is used to insert/remove the soft armour filling.

within these three (3) pieces fold a single olive-green backer, this is a thick multi-layered kevlar insert fitted into a plastic envelope. these came in a variety of sizes, relating to the size of cover worn, and were interchangeable between the CBA, ECBA and the later AFV Crewmember's vest, that I have little to no info on. this kevlar backer is rated to stop 9x19 FMJ and most if not all fragmentation from explosives, but is not rated to stop higher calibre or energy balistic threats.

this filler is likely from the mid 1980s/early 1990s production CBA's, as the labelling has significantly degraded from frequent wear, and looks to be the early L/W Mk.1 filler. it was important to ensure that the label faced the inside of the cover, as the kevlar layered composite would not interact properly with projectiles if turned the wrong way around.

the other side is marked with a warning, and a scrawled on name, likely someone who was issued this armour in the past.

while i don't actually own any of the hard ceramic insert plates, they can rarely be found online and i have some photos of their usage to show.

these plates were repurposed by the MOD as the cumberbund plates for the osprey system, so they don't often get surplused and rarely end up on the "grey" market. this plate is a later model, and can be distinguished by the rounded off corners for ease of insertion and removal. the plate is composed of a sintered alumina body with a thin but tight cloth and resin covering to ensure that side blowout does not occur, and reduce the effectiveness of the plate.

a final note of difference relates to the difference between pre and post herrick ECBA covers; pre-herrick covers had buckle attachment points for affixing to the issued PLCE webbing kit, though it was unlikely it was frequently used, as it is rather clunky and uncomfortable. it also reduced the speed at which armour could be taken off, as well as reducing the rotation of the torso relative to the hips, so this was then removed on post herrick MTP covers.

My big tank I got second hand from a reptile store, I just went and asked the guy if he had any and he had an old dirty one he didn’t have time to clean up. So that’s possibly a way to get one. Facebook market place or sites like that people sell tanks all the time so if you’ve a car/someone with one it can be a way to get a cheaper one. Otherwise it’s an exo terra tank, you can get them from most reptile stores and even from Amazon.

Gumtree and pre loved are sites I’ve used but they’re in the UK, I don’t know any US or other second hand sites.

My smaller tank I got from thespidershop a UK bases store and they make them themselves so they’re not always in stock.

There are bigger ones too but you’re getting up in price with them. I personally like acrylic tanks because they’ve just so much lighter and they can handle being dropped better, as someone with shakey and weak wrists that’s pretty important to me.

For my other ones they’re just plastic tubs I got from my local home goods store drilled holes into the tops of. I don’t really keep millipedes in them long term but they’re great as temp tanks when I get new millipedes and I need to set up tanks or until they’ve gotten over their 2 week quarantine if I plan to house them with other millipedes. Main reason I don’t use them is that they’re not fully transparent.

I can’t really recommend the tanks I have my isopods in for anything other than them. They’re marketed for jumping spiders and other bugs but I’ve found that the tops of them warp and the magnet clasp is pretty week, anything millipede could easy get out. Also they fry out pretty fast and leak from the bottom. They’re also real small. But if you wanna keep some isopods on your desk? They’re not terrible and dirt cheap, they’re usually listened under “reptile feeding box” or “acrylic box” but searching small terrarium can also get some results.

Inklings Challenge Chapter 1, Take I forgot

I shall dine on fine cheeses if Tumblr lets me put this through.

If all else fails, I shall be linking to Wattpad, because I don't know what's going on with my ability to long post on Tumblr.

The story is incomplete, and maybe one day I'll finish it. Five chapters are finished as of right now, and maybe before the 21st is over, I'll have the sixth finished, but no guarantees.

Without further ado: The Comforter, Chapter 1: Welcome

Megan Carr let the front door of her new house shut close behind her, sighing dejectedly at the mess that awaited her.  She had been in the new house for about week -at least, she was sure it had been about a week- and she still was hardly unpacked. Boxes reigned in the house, sitting on counters, floors, and furniture. She never thought she had much stuff, but the boxes were determined to prove her wrong.

 It was a nice little house, and one that had surprisingly been on the market for such a long time with such a low price. The only thing that Megan could determine was wrong with it was that the basement could only be accessed from the outside. There was no door inside that just went right down. Odd, and inconvenient, sure, but still.

 She shouldn't be complaining, really. In the end, she got the house, and a place to call her own. She tossed her purse somewhere to the right, where it tackled a smaller box and both tumbled into the stacks of bigger boxes. Whatever. It was the weekend. She didn't need to go anywhere until Monday, so she could deal with finding that purse later. She also didn't hear anything break, so it was fine.

 She headed into the kitchen and flicked on the light. Settling herself at the one available spot at the table, she plopped down her sad little salad from Subway. The lettuce was wilted, and due to the a miscommunication, there were banana peppers right on top. Banana peppers were disgusting. There was also bacon, which at the time, she thought would be tasty, but now, sitting in the yellow light of a box–filled kitchen, she realized that the salty taste actually came across as unappetizing. She pushed the contents of the salad around with her plastic fork, casting glances at the towers of boxes. Somewhere, one of the boxes contained her set of actual silverware, plates, and cups sat. There were also boxes of pots, pans, and soup cans. If she didn't want to go out over the weekend, it was going to be essential to actually start unpacking. At least unpack the kitchen.

 Choking down the salad proved motivation enough. She pulled out a pair of scissors, and set to work. Unfortunately, after all the kitchen stuff was pulled out, she found that she overestimated the size of her cupboards. She had gotten herself -and was gifted- a good amount of canned goods, and now there wasn't a place to put them. The most annoying thing was that it was only a few cans.

 She picked up the rest of the cans, frowning at them as she looked at the labels, as though they had personally wronged her. Which, in a sense, they had. If only they could just disappear into another dimension in the cupboard and stay there until she cleaned her cabinets out and realized that they had been left there forgotten for years.

 She dumped them into one of the smaller box. It probably would be best to place them in the basement. There were utility shelves down there, left by the previous owner. In addition to storage, perhaps she could start her own little post-apocalypse stash.

 Megan went to stand up and pick up the box, then stopped. It was now dark out. Which in and of itself wasn't so much of an issue. It wasn't like the neighborhood was dangerous. It was a quiet little street, surrounding by thin forest. And if she had to do something like set out the trash, or get something from her car, it would be no issue.

 But she would be going out to go down into the basement. She was adamant that nothing was wrong with the house. But there was something messed up about the basement.

 She shook her head. No, she was just giving herself the creeps. Okay, sure, the setup of the utility shelves gave her an eerie feeling, like she was in that one scene from War of the Worlds. The boarded up windows only added to that feeling, adding shadows where anything could jump out . . . .

 And that was that. She was absolutely not going down there tonight. It could wait until there was at least a little light. But now it was bedtime.

 Leaving the box of cans there on the floor, she got up and got ready for bed.

  A blinding ray of sun woke Megan up. Blinking in confusion, she checked her phone for the time. She registered the first two numbers being "11", then dropped her phone. She had nothing to do today. She didn't have to go in for work. She could just lay right there and let the day pass her by. And then she could do the same thing with Sunday.

 The more she tried to settled herself into that plan, the more she was reminded of the fact that she was in a house with tons of boxes, waiting for her to rifle through them and empty them. Including that one box that had to go to the basement.

 Groaning, she slid herself out of bed. This was a load of bullcrap. She had worked all week, looking forward to a weekend, only to remember that she had to do work at her house. Couldn't it just be finished? Maybe a fairy had come in the middle of the night and sorted everything out for her?

 It wasn't the first time she had this wish. Almost every day after work she had unlocked the door, hoping that by some strange magic, her house would be unpacked, organized, and cleaned up, just waiting for her.

 And just like those times before, stepping out of her bedroom proved that magic did not exist and helpful fairies did not come in the middle of the night. Deciding that making any kind of breakfast would only kill her motivation for a clean house, she began to set to work, purposefully avoiding the box of cans on the kitchen floor. Thanks to that wonderful imagination of hers, she had amazing nightmares of monsters forcing her to hide in her basement while they tried to get a glimpse of her through the boarded windows. The basement door had also locked behind her, so when the monsters left, she couldn't even escape.

 It was well into the afternoon when she finally gathered the courage to pick up the box and head outside.

 Megan blinked in the sudden burst of light in her face. Sorting through her stuff, she had forgotten that it was so sunny outside. She took a moment to look around her, checking out her neighbors' properties and adjusting to the light before heading out back to the basement door.

 The neighbors to her left were partially blocked by the line of trees between them. They had a two story house with a separate garage, all painted a soft shade of blue. A very pretty garden surrounded the house. Megan hadn't met them yet, but she had caught glimpses of the couple outside together, working on the garden. Across the street was a one story house, like hers, though bigger. It was a pale yellow with brown trim. Stained glass ornament hung in the windows facing her house. Two well kept cars sat in the driveway. It was overall a nice view to see when she stepped out. She hadn't officially met the occupants, but whenever they happened to cross paths, they would give her a friendly wave she'd returned.

 It was the house to the right that she wasn't particularly fond of, if only because of the inhabitant. It was a small two story house, painted an ugly off white. In the driveway sat a beatup minivan that had not moved from that spot since the day she moved in. There were drooping flowers in the flowerpots in front of the house that only topped off the whole image. The inhabitant was the only one to say hello to her, introducing herself as Karen. Megan had barely gotten her name out when Karen launched into all kinds of questions Megan felt were bordering personal. Despite taking the initiative to greet her, Megan wasn't sure she could call Karen friendly so much as nosy.

 "What do you do for work?" "Do you have a lot of parties?" "This is a quiet neighborhood, so we don't like loud noises." "You're not going to be going up and down the street at all hours of the night, are you?" "I know how you young people are."

 It was a headache to just meet her. Megan knew that in order to keep the peace, the solution was to attempt to avoid her at all costs. She wasn't one to throw parties or play anything loud, so at the very least, Karen would have no reason to complain about that.

 Remembering that Karen also had a tendency to want to talk every time she saw Megan, she quickly ducked her head and went straight for the basement. Luck must have hated her, however. She heard Karen's front door open and slam close. Following the door, she could hear Karen call out to her. It was too loud to pretend she didn't hear.

 She raised and available hand up in greeting, hoping she could continue on her way. But Karen was not about to let that happen.

 "What do you have there?" Karen asked, walking up to the four foot fence that separated their properties. She was wearing a pair of faded jeans, and a turquoise top that looked like she used it for outdoor work.

 "Just stuff to take to the basement," Megan said, not slowing her pace.

 "So why are you out here?" Karen called out. "Shouldn't you have a door inside your house to the basement? Have you not found it?"

 "Nope," Megan said, stopping in front of the door.

 Karen stretched her neck to see what was in the box. "What's in there? Cans? Is that paint? If that's paint, perhaps you could keep it up here. I've noticed your fence looks a little drab." She gestured to Megan's side of the fence.

 In fairness, it was kind of drab. It was just a boring brown color. But that really wasn't any of Karen's business. Megan would take care of the fence when she saw fit, and how she saw fit.

 Megan didn't answer her, not wanting to say anything rude. She'd only been there for a week. Maybe if she gave Karen no reason to go after her, Karen would get bored and leave her alone.

 She struggled with the door handle, trying to jiggle it just right to unlatch.

 "As long as it's just white," Karen continued. "None of those weird colors. That just doesn't work here. It'd be an eyesore."

 The part of her that wanted peace focused everything on the doorknob. The petty part of her made a mental note to find every neon paint imaginable and paint the fence a mixed up rainbow of neon colors.

 "I have to get going," she called out to Karen. "Good to talk to you." Without waiting to hear if Karen responded, she pulled open the stubborn door and hurriedly stepped downstairs.

 Halfway down, the door gently closed behind her. The stairway was lit by a soft, fiery glow. Surprised, Megan took a moment to look around her. Smooth, rock walls were on either side of her, and even the steps were made of stone. At the bottom, there was a wooden door. Beside it on the left was a torch, carefully placed in order to not touch the door or anyone going through it.

This was not her basement.
