When did you start designing masks? Is Zimi your first mask project?

I started designing and producing masks in 2013. Zimi is my third entrepreneurial project. It is a continuation of my second entrepreneurial project (the first generation of frame masks). I call Zimi the second generation of frame masks. I have received financial investment for every entrepreneurial project, and Zimi is no exception. I own 20% of Zimi. I am the founder of Zimi.

What makes the Zimi mask different from other masks?

Zimi is a frame mask. In my mind, it is a mask that is close to perfect, although it is not perfect yet.

It allows better-performing materials to play the greatest role because its effective filtering space is large enough.

It has a frame support, so it is more suitable for repeated wear.

Can you discuss your decision to make the Zimi mask available in multiple sizes? It seems like there are more size options for Zimi than most other masks. What sizes are available and are there additional sizes in the works?

As of December 2024, Zimi masks have 4 frames, and the frames for XS and XL sizes are completed within a month. That means we will have 6 sizes next year, but we will also eliminate some sizes or models that are not selling well. We are a small R&D company, and too many products will bring us a great burden, which is why Zimi masks cannot be mass-produced, have low production efficiency, and are expensive. Our advantage is that we constantly adjust our products based on market feedback and design masks that everyone needs.

Will the Zimi mask be effective if it gets wet? If a Zimi mask is wet inside from condensation, can it be reused?

The mask is wet, this needs to be classified. What is this liquid? Water vapor produced by human breathing, or sweat. The level of pure water content in this liquid, such as the water vapor exhaled by the human body, is very pure. Because it is a steam type, it has little effect on the static electricity of the mask. Pure water is not conductive, and the mask will not filter water vapor. After the mask is wet, the resistance will increase, and the mask can continue to be used after drying. If it is sweat, because sweat contains other substances, it has a greater impact on the static electricity of the mask. Zimi’s sealing ring material can absorb sweat. If too much sweat is on the filter material, it is recommended to replace it.

How many times can the plastic “skeleton” of a Zimi mask be used?

I notice your masks are rated for KN95 but they have a headstrap option. Does a KN95 with a headstrap equate to an N95?

In the global mask market, everyone is concerned about the difference between KN95 and N95. In fact, many people have misunderstandings. KN95 is the filtration level in China’s GB2626 standard. GB2626 masks were customized by 3M in China 20 years ago. They brought NIOSH 42CFR PART84 to China, that is, starting from GB2626-2006, the performance of KN95 is completely consistent with N95. The leakage test of GB2626 adopts the EN149 method, so China’s GB2626 standard is a combination of NIOSH 42CFR PART84 and European standard EN149. After 13 years of optimization, the performance of various indicators in the latest standard GB2626-2019 is improving. In fact, it is higher than most of the performance indicators of the US NIOSH and EU EN149. Why do people think KN95 is not good? It is because many Chinese mask companies only produce barely qualified products for cost and production efficiency. China’s national market supervision department inspects GB2626 masks sold on the market every year, and it is not like what everyone says that KN95 masks are not regulated. However, China’s random inspection of KN95 does not involve leakage, so many KN95 masks do not pay attention to leakage performance. Back to this question, headloop KN95 = N95. In order to ensure the tightness of N95, N95 does not have ear hooks. Most earloop KN95s are not as tight as headloop KN95s, but it is not absolute, so I really hope that NIOSH will test Zimi’s earloop masks.

How many times do you recommend reusing a Zimi mask before replacement?

I recently posted an article on the Reddit forum about “How long should I wear a mask?” The use time of a mask is not fixed. For masks used in industrial environments, most manufacturers will tell you that if the resistance increases, it needs to be replaced. At this time, the increase in resistance may be caused by particle blockage, water vapor blockage, or both. In civilian environments, the increase in resistance is due to water vapor blockage, while particle blockage is relatively rare. The number of particles in the air is much less than in industrial dust environments. If it is blocked by water vapor, it can continue to be used after ventilation and drying. “You drive a hard bargain, Bambi,” Billie said, getting up again and helping the other two to gather up the toys so they could clean them later. Stevie grabbed the wet duvet off the bed and led the way to the bathroom, and as they started following her, Eddie and Billie shared a look and nodded. As they got to the bathroom, they both reached out and pinched Stevie’s ass, making her jump in surprise and making the other two laugh. She shook her head and continued into the bathroom, dropping the duvet by the laundry machine and rolling her eyes.

“You’re both fucking annoying, I hope you know that,” she said as she stripped out of the rest of her lingerie. 

“Yeah, but you love us anyway,” Billie grinned, following suit and climbing into the shower with Stevie and Eddie once they had all gotten undressed.

“Fuck me, I guess I do,” Stevie joked, flicking Billie on the cheek as they crowded into the shower. She flicked Eddie too, and Eddie responded by catching her finger in her teeth and giving it a little nip. Stevie just rolled her eyes again and laughed, and then she instructed both of them to turn around so she could start shampooing their hair. 

As she tilted her head back so that her girlfriend could start washing her hair, Eddie was hit once again with the biggest feeling of love and happiness. It took twenty six years, but she was finally completely happy, living in a big city, starting her dream career, and in the best relationship she’d ever had with the two people she cared about most in the world. This was it. She had finally made it.

Sketchbook Supply Recs!

Hi y’all, Since I’ve been posting more sketchbook pages recently, I thought I would share some of my favorite supplies. My recommendations are tailored to creating a user-friendly, portable kit mainly focused on ink and markers. I’ve found that having a kit like this makes me more likely to regularly develop my sketchbook, which I view as one of the most important parts of keeping one. None of these recommendations are sponsored or affiliated, I just hope that by sharing what supplies I enjoy, others can find new things to try. Keep reading under the cut!

I often find that products marketed towards the stationary and note-taking/organization niches perform better at lower prices for frequent sketchbook use than products targeted specifically towards the art and illustration community. Don’t shy away from products in office-supply stores just because it doesn’t say ‘for art’ on it. 

I also recommend refillable pens whenever possible. They usually offer more customization in ink color and nib size. Refillable options produce less plastic waste than disposable options. Refillable designs tend to have more ergonomic designs, with larger barrels and better weight balance that minimize hand discomfort. If you draw frequently, this is something worth considering to avoid damaging your hand joints in the long term. In addition, they’re built with durability in mind, allowing them to be thrown in your bag or pencil case without worry. 

Darker ink drawing pens make up the core of my kit, so I’ve tried a variety of options and usually have at least a few of these in my bag. Currently, the Pilot Kakuno Pocket Fountain Pen (around $10-19 depending where you purchase from) is my favorite. I love the line quality this pen can produce– the barrel is a bit larger than most pens and the body and cap give it a good balance in the hand. This pen also takes cartridge refills, allowing you to easily switch colors between refills without the mess. There are a wide range of colors available for this pen, and the thinner water-based ink formula is easy to work with. The ink dries down matte, so it scans accurately without digital manipulation. It also comes in a few different nib sizes with different cosmetic options/color ways for the pen body. Though fountain pens typically have a slight learning curve in learning how to draw with them, I found this one especially easy to work with since the nib has an etched design that shows when you’re holding it properly. 

The Pilot EnerGel Alloy Body Ballpoint Pen (around $8-10) is another of my favorites. The metal body of the pen is a slightly larger barrel size with a nice weight balance which allows smooth lines without hand discomfort. They’re also refilled with cartridges, which come in a few different colors and point sizes; I enjoy the 1.0 mm the most for this pen. The water-based gel ink formula for this pen is one of the best I’ve tried, as it’s very smooth, dries fast which minimizes smudging, and scans well. The V5/V7 Ballpoint Pen from Pilot (available in multi-packs for around $1-2 per pen) has a similar ink formula in varied nib sizes. They aren’t refillable, but they last a long time. I think they’re worthwhile, especially as a beginner friendly, widely available option.

Muji Pens (available online for about $2 per pen) are another great ballpoint gel option. They come in an impressive range of colors, thicknesses, and cap types. They can also be refilled with cartridges. I think the finer 0.38 and 0.5 nib sizes are my favorites from this line. 

If you prefer a brush-tip style pen to ballpoint or fountain pens, I really enjoy the Tombow Fudenosuke or Pentel Pocket Brush. The Fudenosuke (around $3-4) is a felt-tip brush pen. The nib is a perfect firmness to get a variety of line weights with ease. I find that this makes it well-suited to thumbnails and other fast sketching. They come in a smaller range of well-formulated, pigmented colors, which consistently scan well. They aren’t refillable, but last a long time, which I think makes them worth it. 

The Pentel Pocket Brush (around $7 with two refills included) is a bristle brush pen. The fibers are very smooth and can achieve a wide variety of textures and line weights. It has a bit more of a learning curve than some of my other recommendations, but that’s mostly if you haven’t inked with a brush previously– it’s relatively easy to get comfortable with. It’s also refillable with cartridges and has a few different color options. This pen is one of my favorites for figure drawing. 

Though it’s not a pen, I also think the Rotring Mechanical Drafting Pencil (around $20-30) deserves a mention for folks who prefer sketching in pencil. The metal body and textured grip create a good weight balance that makes it write exceptionally smooth. It also takes standard graphite and other colorful options which give an equivalent level of customization to the previously described pens. 

Markers and colorful supplies are another important element of your kit. At the top of the list for me is a couple of different highlighters and felt tip pens. I love Zebra Mildliners, especially the double-ended ones with the super fine/brush tip combo (usually less than $1/pen when purchased in packs of 5 or more). They’re easy to draw with and can be a great choice for adding value or colors. The color range (mostly pastel and creamy colors) is also impressive. Stabilo makes a similar style of pen called the pointMax (M 0.8) (usually about $2 a pen, but also comes in packs) that comes in some darker, more vibrant colors. I prefer the thicker size since they tend to last longer, but they make some thinner liner versions of this pen (called point88) with the same ink formula that are also good. If you like a thicker marker, Chunky highlighters are the way to go. Stabilo Boss (about $1.50 in a multi-pack) and Staedtler Textsurfer (about $1.70) are great options that come in a variety of colors, with Stabilo coming in creamy pastels and Staedtler coming in more bright and neon colors.  

Within this category, novelty supplies can also be a good colorful addition. Mixed color pencils can be really fun for line drawing. Koh-i-Noor makes some of my favorites (about $4 but they last a long time) with earth tones, primaries, and neons. Gelly Roll pens (about $1.50 /pen) also are a nice novelty pen while still being high quality. They have a good color range with metallic, neon, glitter, and other finishes.

Presents to myself from the Christmas Market

Plus bonus winter wonderland view from my living room window!

I got to be there for "baby's first christmas market" as I went to the market with a friend of mine and her baby. That was pretty cute! The market was gorgeous as well, though unfortunately it was bloody cold and my back stiffed up on me. That was less... pleasant...

The christmas market itself was great though! They always have very artistic stalls with lots of handmade stuff. I had so much fun looking at all the beautiful things! If someone handed me 1000€ I could have easily spent it there and brought presents for everyone. As it is, I only bought one present and some presents for myself. Because I can!

I got myself some very mori kei-esque decor. The first purchase was a felted fairy/fae creature in a brown garment with a hazelnut hat. They look so precious! The second was a medium sized wooden stamp. I've actually got a bit of a collection started here - I bought four such hand whittled wooden stamps years ago as a teenager, because they look so gorgeous. Actually, I have a stamp collection in general but these are extra special with the wood used and their natural look. The texture and shapes are very pleasing. I decided to add stamp number 5 to the collection.

On the second (and final) lap of the christmas market I also had to buy myself a big wooded plate stamp. It's SO gorgeous!! I couldn't believe my eyes almost when I first saw it. And it was surprisingly affordable, for it's quality and size. I would have estimated about double the prize. I decided I'm worth to spend money on and took the beautiful plate home! ♥

I'm planning to do a "stamping session" sometimes next year. Hold me to it!!

Oh no problem!

My big tank I got second hand from a reptile store, I just went and asked the guy if he had any and he had an old dirty one he didn’t have time to clean up. So that’s possibly a way to get one. Facebook market place or sites like that people sell tanks all the time so if you’ve a car/someone with one it can be a way to get a cheaper one. Otherwise it’s an exo terra tank, you can get them from most reptile stores and even from Amazon.

Gumtree and pre loved are sites I’ve used but they’re in the UK, I don’t know any US or other second hand sites.

My smaller tank I got from thespidershop a UK bases store and they make them themselves so they’re not always in stock.

My small tank I got from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B2CRKVJR and it comes in a number of sizes, it the only acrylic tank I’ve gotten that doesn’t warp and it’s actually really good for the price. There are bigger ones too but you’re getting up in price with them. I personally like acrylic tanks because they’ve just so much lighter and they can handle being dropped better, as someone with shakey and weak wrists that’s pretty important to me.

For my other ones they’re just plastic tubs I got from my local home goods store drilled holes into the tops of. I don’t really keep millipedes in them long term but they’re great as temp tanks when I get new millipedes and I need to set up tanks or until they’ve gotten over their 2 week quarantine if I plan to house them with other millipedes. Main reason I don’t use them is that they’re not fully transparent.

I can’t really recommend the tanks I have my isopods in for anything other than them. They’re marketed for jumping spiders and other bugs but I’ve found that the tops of them warp and the magnet clasp is pretty week, anything millipede could easy get out. Also they fry out pretty fast and leak from the bottom. They’re also real small. But if you wanna keep some isopods on your desk? They’re not terrible and dirt cheap, they’re usually listened under “reptile feeding box” or “acrylic box” but searching small terrarium can also get some results.
