The Worlds of Psychiatric Counterstrike and Unusual Beauty
Keep in mind, the worlds of these two series are very similar, they are two completely different worlds. Psychiatric Counterstrike has psychological beasts and people fighting them, and Unusual Beauty doesn't.
There are other races in these worlds, besides the human race. There are elves, fairies, dwarves, centaurs, trolls, and more. At first there were only humans, but after the Tower of Babel fell, and the human races separated into groups, to different parts of the world, some of the groups adapted to their new environments, which is how there came to be other races.
Biology is a bit different in theses worlds. For one there is no bowel movements, just urination. Most of what people and animals eat gets turned into energy, and what's left over is liquidated and urinated out. No gas either. There's no acne. No body hair (except in the case of certain races, like for example, werewolves or satyrs.) Sweat doesn't stink unless the person has some kind of sickness (they should still shower, though.) People and most animals can regrown each of their teeth up to five times per tooth, in the event that one or more are lost (this doesn't mean they don't have to take care of their current teeth.) (I've eliminated alot of gross stuff from my worlds because I'm squeamish.)
Magical creatures exist in these worlds, and most of them are docile and intelligent, especially dragons. There are very few magical creatures that are dangerous, like cockatrices and bugbears. There are also magical beings known as nympths. They are born from trees and flower bushes that have long life expectancy, lakes, rivers, and the ocean, and clean skies. They don't have reproductive systems and are all aroace, but they do have gender indentities, most of them are female. There is less crime in these worlds, thanks to nymphs, keeping watch over other living things. They will intervene when innocents are in danger. Cities and towns also have security cameras throughout the streets.
People are able to understand and communicate with animals that they love. They're still speaking their native tongue, they just can understand each other. Most animals and magical creatures feel safe around people who can communicate with them. But not all animals and magical creatures will cooperate. Some creatures are just beyond reason and are sociopathic and/or psychotic.
These worlds are alot less populated than our real life world, there is far less pollution, and there's hardly any need to worry about global warming. People and magical creatures are taking good care of the Earth.
The USA is a much better place, including California and the southern states. People can't be politicians if they're older than sixty. The economy is much better, there's no inflation, and workers are paid well. There are hardly any people who are homeless. There is also free healthcare (including dental and medicine) for people, animals, and magical creatures. School hours are shorter, starting at 12pm and ending at 3pm, and there's only a small amount of homework for students. (Kids need plenty of sleep hours, time to wake up so they can listen better at school, and need time to relax and do other things after school!)
Because of the existence of magical creatures and plants, medicine is more advance. There are permanent cures for alot of auto immune disorders and the first three stages of cancer, as well as the common cold, flu, canker sores, and all STD's. There was never a Corona pandemic, not only because of it was prevented from getting out, but because vaccines were made and given out in 2016. Sex change surgery is also even better. They still can't reproduce like cis-gender people, but they can experience intimacy the same way.
The LGBTQIA+ community (the A stands for asexual!) and many different races are more widely accepted by the world, but there are still a few of those who are prejudice and hateful towards them.
Keep in mind, that while these worlds are better than our real life world, they are not perfect. There are still problems. There is still crime, hatred, and corruption. It's just not as bad as what goes on in our world.

how the FUCK do some ppl just be walkin around w their phones just fuckin naked no case no screen protector no nothing??? do you have THAT MUCH trust in your own motor control??? or are you just so rich and/or careless with money that the thought of replacing a shattered screen doesnt even faze you???
like i got a new (or. technically used but new to me) phone today and the case hasn't come in the mail yet and i am TERRIFIED. i feel like if i so much as breathe on it wrong it'll shatter into a billion pieces like the breakaway glass of a window of some poor unsuspecting office worker in an action movie that's supposed to look cool but really just leaves me concerned about how the hell you replace windows on a skyscraper like it's gotta be difficult right???
i feel like there's probably not much equipment built for that purpose because you don't reasonably expect a window on the goddamned 20th floor to get broken cuz it's not like little timmy from next door can accidentally lob a baseball through it like with a normal window. do you gotta rebuild the scaffolding that was there during construction? do you do some jerry rigged version of that weird harness thing that window washers use (do window washers even exist in real life in the modern day??? and if so is there a limit on how tall of buildings they clean?) but beefed up to support a fuckhuge pane of glass and at least 2 people to install it?
at that point it's probably easier to just track down the flying neon tights-clad asshole who decided that your window was an acceptable place to slam the evil dr. spiderfucker and demand he fly up there and fix it for you.
actually, do you think there are any superhumans who decided "nah, the whole hero thing just aint for me". and just used their powers to handle tasks that would be difficult for normal humans to do
like some lady with lightning powers just sayin "you expect me to bust my fuckin ass saving this city -for fucking FREE, i might add-" (sidenote, do you think any superheroes have a patreon??? like might be tricky if they got the whole secret identity thing goin on but you could prolly make bank) "and constantly getting injured because NO i'm not impervious or anything my powers are literally JUST lightning -and, y'know, medical bills arent fucking CHEAP and heroism aint got no insurance plan and the american healthcare system is a fuckin JOKE."
"and the whole time making some dickhead villain who calls himself some shit like roboclown form a personal vendetta against me. that he tries to make into a gross heteroerotic rivalry and he gets fixated on me and tries to figure out my secret identity- yeah, i'd have to make up some alter ego like a high stakes version of hannah montana, probably someth cliche like 'electra' (but not electra bc that just reminds me of sigmund freud and his idea of an electra complex. god. what a creep.)- so that he could hold my family hostage."
(edit: looked it up and apparently electra complex was made up by jung, not freud. freud rejected it, not because it's fucking creepy bullshit (which it is) but because he felt like the idea would make boys and girls sound too similar and we can't have that, now can we?)
"and i mean okay i don't technically have family cuz my parents died in some kind of obligatory backstory bullshit probably involving a laboratory accident that led to me getting my powers. and like, fuck marriage and kids. but roboclown or whatever could still hurt my dogs."
"you expect me to be a fucking hero and put up with that shit??? are you out of your fucking MIND? have you gone off your rocker, flew over the handle, or simply fell off the waggon? no. no. FUCK that. i don't care if you think it's my responsibility to be a hero i didnt ASK for this bullshit."
"i just use my lightning to generate electricity for the local power plant. only gotta work a couple hours a day and i make a FORTUNE. i have health insurance with dental and a 401k. no one forming grudges against me except oil tycoons. but like they could just bribe me to stop, it'd be much cheaper for them to bribe me than to hire an assassin ballsy and skilled enough to kill a bitch with electric hands so like. i'm not worried."
...anyway. if you don't have a phone case i don't fucking trust you.
#eliot posts#my adhd really took over#yinz are LUCKY i went back and added paragraph breaks#this was originally one big text wall.#long post

Right in Front of You
Pairing: Detective!Bucky Barnes x Detective!Reader
Word Count: 2.6k
Warnings: mentions of mutilation, murder, canon gore, serial killer shenanigans
Summary: Sometimes the answers to your hardest cases are right in front of your face.
A/N: This is my submission for @barnesrogersvstheworld ‘s Halloween writing challenge! I meant to have this up earlier, but I’m constantly paranoid what I write sucks. My legend was The Man with a Hook for a Hand! I literally owe @if-n0t-l8ter-when my soul for beta reading this for me and reassuring that this isn’t hot garbage.
Feedback is always welcome and appreciated (:
The flash of evidence's camera blinded you, and you waited for the fuzzy bright spots to leave your vision before you addressed the victim. You couldn't exactly do your best work if you were still trying to get your wits about you.
John Doe looked to be about forty-five to fifty years old - he might have been younger, if he was a smoker. Two teenagers trying to tag the old post office found him by the dumpster. His body had seventeen stab wounds, all to the chest, which was similar to three other murders your department was investigating. But what differed John Doe from the rest was the fact his left hand had been cut off and replaced with a rusted hook.
The hand hadn't been recovered either. Whoever was behind the murders must have kept it as a souvenir.
Your medical examiner concluded the victim must have been killed some time around nine at night based on the amount of blood clotting on his back. She couldn't tell if the stab wounds were what killed him until she did an autopsy, but she had a feeling they were. Your serial killer was consistent with almost everything.
Seventeen stab wounds. Victims always killed at nine and dropped off one block away from where they were originally picked up. They were generally single people with no family in the city. All the small details were consistent.
But the first victim - Vicky Castro - was found in a perfectly clean white dress instead of her work clothes. The second victim - a homeless man who lived in Central Park - had his throat stuffed with unwrapped candy. And the third had a bunny mask nailed into his face.
Now this guy had a hook hand? How did that connect to the others?
You sighed. You had your work cut out for you.
"The man with a hook for a hand," James, your partner, said as he gestured to the rusty hook.
You gave a small laugh. "Talk about a creepy urban legend."
As the words left your mouth, you froze. Urban legends. You almost slapped yourself for not noticing the connection until this very moment.
"Oh my god, I could kiss you right now!" You grabbed the front of James's jacket, almost letting the temptation to plant one on him take over. He gave you a lazy smile in hopes that you would, but you turned his face back towards the victim instead, "The Hook Man."
"Yeah, I can see that."
"The Woman in White." He looked back at you, his brows furrowed in confusion. "The Candyman. The fuckin' Bunny Man! All of the victims are urban legends!"
James smiled, and he, too, felt the urge to kiss you in this moment. This had been the case that plagued your department for months. Every day that passed, and every new victim that popped up, the people of New York lost their faith in you. The media would have a field day knowing you finally found a connection between all the victims.
Even if it did not seem like a big deal, it was.
"We gotta take this back to the Captain," he said, pulling you right back out of your thoughts.
You nodded. It had already been a long night, and you'd be able to go home knowing there would be a lead waiting for you the next day.
---
Walking into work that morning felt different than usual. The detectives were buzzing with a newfound excitement; they were ready to find another lead and take down the bastard that was giving them so much grief.
You tried to be the rational one in situations like this; the one who refused to get excited until you had a concrete lead, but you couldn't help yourself this time around. You were buzzing just as much as everyone else, if not more. By the end of the day, you wanted the killer in custody with a full confession typed out on your desk. And you were going to make it happen.
James trailed in a few minutes after you, two coffees in his hands. You thanked him as he placed one of them on your desk. He must have known how hard you planned on working today because he didn't start his usual morning small talk. Nothing about his commute or what you had for breakfast - you both dove right into working.
Two other detectives, Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter, were sent out to interview the roommate of your John Doe from the previous night. The medical examiner had spent most of her night trying to get a name from his dental records and sent the results in before you got there. You were a little jealous, since you enjoyed the interview phase, but you tried to shake that feeling off. Captain Fury needed you here to start connecting all the dots.
You pinned the map of the city against one of the white boards and marked the locations where each victim was found. You thought it would help, but it only left you more confused. Nothing about where they were picked up or dropped off related to each other.
The Candy Man and the Woman in White were close to each other. They were found within ten miles of each other, but the other two were farther apart. Practically on opposite ends of the city.
You wanted to scream every time you glanced at the map. Every time you made progress, the bastard seemed to kick you back three spaces. You were almost positive he was somewhere nearby, watching you struggle to connect the dots and laughing at your frustration.
James stood next to you, his body language mimicking yours with his arms crossed over his chest and his brows pulled to the middle of his face. It was wrong of you to be happy that he was as stumped as you. It would have been quicker if one of you could piece together all the clues, but you so badly wanted it to be you. You, selfishly, wanted most of the glory after all the sleep you had lost because of this one person.
"I got nothing," he sighed in defeat. He glanced at the clock and saw it was already seven. "I think it's time to call it quits. Don't stay here too late, okay?"
He patted your shoulder, and you gave him a small smile. James was always a good partner. He spent a lot of his time trying to make sure you ate lunch or dinner and got enough sleep to survive the following day. And he saved your ass more than once because you lacked self-preservation skills. You weren't sure what you would do without him as your partner.
And sometimes you wondered what could spark between you if you didn't always put work first.
"Hey, James?" You called out just before he made it to the door.
"Yeah?"
"Do you wanna get breakfast before work tomorrow? It's on me."
He rolled his eyes playfully. "As if I'd let you pay, sweetheart, but yeah. Breakfast sounds great."
You nodded and waved him off, deciding to argue about who was going to pay tomorrow. It wasn't as if it was an official date, so why would he pay? You shook your head. You didn't need to be thinking about that right now.
You turned your attention back to the map. A frustrated breath left your lips and rubbed at your eyes, hoping it would somehow get you to look at it differently.
"Come on," you whined. "Talk to me! I know you want to!"
You leaned your hands back against James's desk, and you cringed when some of his paperwork fell over the edge with a thud!
Most of the papers were weighed down by a book, so it wasn't a lot to clean up, but as you placed everything back on his desk, you couldn't help but stare at the book. James was a reader, so it wasn't out of the ordinary for him to have a book or two at his disposal. It was just the cover - a red book with a black star in the middle - that made you stop and stare.
Your eyes flickered from the star on the cover to the markings on the map, and it clicked in your brain why you couldn't make a connection to them - the map wasn't completed. The killer was trying to complete a five-point star, and he still needed to get the top one. And that was why it wasn't obvious to you right away.
James managed to save the day again without even realizing.
You ripped the map down and spread it across your desk. If you could measure all the points, you'd be able to get a general idea of where the killer was going to strike next. Even if he already picked up his last victim and killed them, at least you would know where to start looking for a body.
The idea of being too late didn't sit well with you, but it was a start.
---
James sent you a text the next morning with an address to a diner he wanted to meet you. It was a little out of your way, but you didn't protest. You were ready to share what you found and driving an extra twenty minutes to get breakfast wouldn't kill the excitement you felt. And he claimed it was one of his favorite spots.
The diner wasn't as busy as you expected for a Wednesday morning, and you smiled when you saw James already grabbed a table off to the side for you. He was always prepared in public; he liked being near the windows, facing the main entrance. Before you could even count how many people in an area, he already knew the possible exits and hiding spots for someone to strike. You assumed that sprang from his military background.
"Mornin'," he kissed your cheek and held out the chair for you, which you thanked him for. "I hope you didn't stay at the precinct all night."
"I didn't!" You laughed. "Okay, I almost did, but I got a full eight hours of sleep, so that counts, right?"
"What ever you say, sweetheart."
He slipped his coat off, and you couldn't help yourself form admiring the way his arms strained the white fabric of his button up. You were shameless with your ogling, letting your eyes trail up from his fit waist to his arms, but you fixated on a dark tattoo showing through his sleeve. You never knew he had a tattoo.
"You didn't tell me you were inked up," you pointed to his arm with a smile. "Were you holding out on me?"
He shrugged. "It's something I got while overseas. Just a stupid star."
You hummed and glanced down at the menu. The address of the diner was printed under the name, and you silently wondered why it seemed familiar. You rarely came to this side of the city, so it wasn't as if you had been here before. But, still, something tugged at the back of your mind - begged for you to remember whatever it was you were missing right in front of your face.
James noticed your shift in mood and asked if you were okay. You smiled over at him in reassurance. You made a joke about possibly being more tired than you thought, and he seemed to accept that without another question.
The name of the street was going to bug the hell out of you. You wanted to know why it was so familiar to -
Chills ran down your spine. The blood in veins froze, spreading from your fingertips to the back of your neck. You gripped the menu tightly between your fists as the realization washed over you; it seemed familiar because this street was one block over from where the next point of the star should be.
And this was a place James admitted he liked to visit often.
James. The one who always seemed to give the clues at the perfect time, especially with the Hook Man. James. The one who loved to read folklore and always kept a book in his desk. James. The one with the star tattoo and the star on his book, which you started to wonder if that was more than just a book. Maybe it was a journal. Maybe it held clues as to where that damned hand was.
You cursed yourself for not seeing what was inside, but you wouldn't have expected your partner to be behind it.
"You sure you're okay?" He questioned, his eyes analyzing every inch of your face. He seemed so concerned, and you were thankful you hadn't eaten yet. You probably would have lost it by now.
"Y-yeah, I'm good."
Your hand instinctively went the gun holstered on your hip, and the realization flashed across his face. Fuck. You shouldn't have been obvious with that.
"Bout time you figured it out, sweetheart," he teased. "I was beginning to wonder whether you were a detective or just an average patrol officer."
Your jaw clenched. "Am I supposed to be your fifth victim?"
"Well, you weren't supposed to be," he sighed dramatically and leaned back in his seat. The smile he gave you was so casual and calm, you wanted to wipe it right off his face. "But I'm starting to think you know too much."

Climate Change Means Trouble for Power Grids (NYT) Huge winter storms plunged large parts of the central and southern United States into an energy crisis this week, with frigid blasts of Arctic weather crippling electric grids and leaving millions of Americans without power amid dangerously cold temperatures. The grid failures were most severe in Texas, where more than four million people woke up Tuesday morning to rolling blackouts. Separate regional grids in the Southwest and Midwest also faced serious strain. As of Tuesday afternoon, at least 23 people nationwide had died in the storm or its aftermath. Analysts have begun to identify key factors behind the grid failures in Texas. Record-breaking cold weather spurred residents to crank up their electric heaters and pushed power demand beyond the worst-case scenarios that grid operators had planned for. At the same time, a large fraction of the state’s gas-fired power plants were knocked offline amid icy conditions, with some plants suffering fuel shortages as natural gas demand spiked. Many of Texas wind turbines also froze and stopped working. The crisis sounded an alarm for power systems throughout the country. Electric grids can be engineered to handle a wide range of severe conditions—as long as grid operators can reliably predict the dangers ahead. But as climate change accelerates, many electric grids will face extreme weather events that go far beyond the historical conditions those systems were designed for, putting them at risk of catastrophic failure.
‘A complete bungle’: Texas’ energy pride goes out with cold (AP) Anger over Texas’ power grid failing in the face of a record winter freeze mounted Tuesday as millions of residents in the energy capital of the U.S. remained shivering with no assurances that their electricity and heat—out for 36 hours or longer in many homes—would return soon or stay on once it finally does. “I know people are angry and frustrated,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who woke up to more than 1 million people still without power in his city. “So am I.” In all, between 2 and 3 million customers in Texas still had no power nearly two full days after historic snowfall and single-digit temperatures created a surge in demand for electricity to warm up homes unaccustomed to such extreme lows, buckling the state’s power grid and causing widespread blackouts. More bad weather, including freezing rain, began arriving Tuesday night. Making matters worse, expectations that the outages would be a shared sacrifice by the state’s 30 million residents quickly gave way to a cold reality, as pockets in some of America’s largest cities, including San Antonio, Dallas and Austin, were left to shoulder the lasting brunt of a catastrophic power failure, and in subfreezing conditions that Texas’ grid operators had known was coming.
Military recruitment (Foreign Policy) A meager job market has given military recruitment a boost around the world, the Wall Street Journal reports. In Canada, applications to join the armed services surged 37 percent over the last nine months of 2020 compared to the previous year. Australia reported a 9.9 percent annual increase in applications. The United Kingdom met its military recruitment targets for the first time in seven years and in the United States, 92 percent of eligible personnel re-enlisted, compared to just 83 percent the previous year.
Volunteer paramedics patrol streets of Venezuela’s capital (AP) Venezuela’s deepening crisis has gutted emergency ambulance services, so a group of volunteer paramedics has stepped into the void to offer life-saving help on the tough streets of Caracas. Calling themselves Angels of the Road, the volunteer corps relies on donated medical supplies and funding from international organizations. Despite receiving no paychecks, its roughly 40 paramedics are ready at a moment’s notice to jump onto motorcycles and fire up their single ambulance and race into the streets. Jonathan Quantip, 44, said he and co-founder Zuly Rodiz launched the project two years ago after watching their native Venezuela precipitously decline over years of political and social crisis. “We Venezuelans have to solve our own country’s problems,” Quantip said. “We have to use the skills we’re each good at.” The group works on a shoestring budget with nothing left over for wages, so each paramedic relies on another source of income. Some donate their off-time after working in hospitals and firehouses. Others flip burgers in fast-food restaurants.
‘We are like captives’: life in Britain’s quarantine hotels (Reuters) Mohamed Noor faces 10 days in COVID-19 quarantine in a hotel room near London’s Heathrow Airport after falling foul of new border controls because of a flight delay. “I don’t have a book. I don’t have a Koran. I don’t have nothing here,” Noor, a 55-year-old Muslim, said by phone after his arrival on Monday, a day later than planned, landed him with a 1,750-pound ($2,400) bill. In another hotel nearby, 61-year-old Sole, who declined to give her surname, said she realised too late that the new rules would kick in before she returned from visiting friends in Chile. “We are like captives in these rooms,” she said. Britain says the measures, effective since Monday, are needed to protect its COVID-19 vaccination programme and guard against new coronavirus variants. People returning from any of 33 “high-risk” countries where travel to Britain is banned must pay 1,750 pounds for a 10-day quarantine hotel package. After being taken by bus to government-contracted hotels, they must spend most of the time in their rooms and have meals delivered to their door.
Toothless travel restrictions (Foreign Policy) Irish holidaymakers have suddenly shown a keen interest in dental hygiene as they attempt to shirk strict lockdown measures to escape the bleak North Atlantic winter. Traveling for “essential medical, health or dental services” is allowed under Ireland’s coronavirus restrictions, leading to a surge in dental surgery appointments in Spain’s Canary Islands. Roberta Beccaris, a receptionist at a dental surgeon’s office on the island of Tenerife, reported taking multiple calls from prospective Irish clients, who have demanded e-mail confirmations of the bookings. Police can issue fines to rule-breaking travelers of roughly $600, although they are powerless to stop those with proof of a medical appointment. “Obviously as they are not turning up, we now understand it is just an excuse for a holiday,” she told RTÉ radio.
Spain betting on vaccine passports to revive summer tourism (Reuters) Spain hopes the introduction of vaccination passports combined with pre-travel COVID-19 testing will allow British tourists to return to Spanish destinations this summer, a tourism ministry source told Reuters on Tuesday. The government has no plans to introduce quarantines on foreign visitors, and was also counting on a wider agreement to be hammered out between Europe and Britain to remove restrictions on non-essential travel, the official added. Over 2020, as global travel was dramatically curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic, foreign tourism to Spain—one of the world’s most visited countries—fell 80% to just 19 million visitors, a level not seen since 1969.
China steps up online controls with new rule for bloggers (AP) Ma Xiaolin frequently wrote about current affairs on one of China’s leading microblogging sites, where he has 2 million followers. But recently, he said in a post, the Weibo site called and asked him not to post original content on topics ranging from politics to economic and military issues. “As an international affairs researcher and a columnist, it looks like I can only go the route of entertainment, food and beverage now,” the international relations professor wrote on Jan. 31. Ma, who often posted on developments in the Mideast, is one of many popular influencers working within the constraints of China’s heavily censored web who is finding that their space to speak is shrinking even further with the latest policy changes and a clean-up campaign run by the country’s powerful censors. Beginning next week, the Cyberspace Administration of China will require bloggers and influencers to have a government-approved credential before they can publish on a wide range of subjects. Some fear that only state media and official propaganda accounts will get permission. The latest move is in line with ever more restrictive regulations under President Xi Jinping that constrict an already narrow space for discourse. The Chinese leader has made “digital sovereignty” a central concept of his rule, under which authorities have set limits and increased control of the digital realm.
Japan’s ruling party wants more women at meetings—unless they talk (Reuters) After a sexism row sparked by Tokyo Olympics chief’s saying women talked too much at meetings, Japan’s ruling party wants women at key meetings—but only if they don’t talk. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party has proposed a new plan that allows five female lawmakers to join the party’s key meetings as observers. Toshihiro Nikai, the party’s 82-year-old secretary general, said on Tuesday that he heard criticism that the party’s board is male-dominated, but added that the board members are elected. But it is important for the party’s female members to “look” at the party’s decision-making process, he said. Those female observers can’t speak during the meetings, but can submit opinions separately to the secretariat office, the daily newspaper Nikkei reported. Requiring female observers at meetings to remain quiet has drawn criticism that the party is out of touch.
Big protests across Myanmar as UN expert fears violence (AP) Demonstrators in Myanmar gathered Wednesday in their largest numbers so far to protest the military’s seizure of power, as a U.N. human rights expert warned that troops being brought to Yangon and elsewhere could signal the prospect for major violence. U.N. rapporteur Tom Andrews said he was alarmed by reports of soldiers being transported into Yangon, the biggest city. “In the past, such troop movements preceded killings, disappearances, and detentions on a mass scale,” he said in a statement issued late Tuesday by the U.N. Human Rights office in Geneva. “I am terrified that given the confluence of these two developments—planned mass protests and troops converging—we could be on the precipice of the military committing even greater crimes against the people of Myanmar.” Wednesday’s turnout in Yangon appeared to be one of the biggest so far in the city. Protesters have adopted a tactic of blocking off streets from security forces by parking vehicles in groups with their hoods up and the excuse of having engine trouble.
Anti-Chinese Sentiment in Myanmar (Foreign Policy) Widespread protests against the Feb. 1 military coup in Myanmar have taken on an increasingly anti-Chinese tone, with rallies held outside the Chinese Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar and calls growing for boycotts of Chinese goods and services. Misinformation is spreading, including rumors that Chinese soldiers have infiltrated Myanmar and that Chinese software will be used to set up a Great Firewall. On balance, it seems unlikely that China supported the coup, especially given its relatively good relationship with the National League for Democracy. Anti-Chinese sentiment has a long history in Myanmar, both on the national level and at the local level, due to conflicts among ethnic Chinese communities and others. Chinese investment projects have been major flash points, especially the Myitsone Dam, which was suspended in 2011 following the move toward democracy. Locals have decried the environmental impacts and forced relocations associated with such projects, while Beijing has been keen to get them restarted. There is also growing anti-Chinese feeling across Southeast Asia. Many young people see parallels between the 2019 Hong Kong protests and their own resistance against local authoritarianism. China’s tactless authoritarianism and resentment toward outsiders contributes to that solidarity, but the main driver is the willingness of local autocrats and the uber-rich to suck up to China for their own ends. That can mean, as in Myanmar’s case, that China is blamed even when it hasn’t actually done much.
Sidelining MBS (Foreign Policy) The United States will downgrade its engagement with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as part of the Biden administration’s drive to “recalibrate” relations with the kingdom, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Tuesday. President Joe Biden will instead conduct diplomacy through Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz, dealing a blow to the crown prince’s standing in Washington.
Gunmen kidnap at least 20 boys from Nigerian boarding school (Washington Post) Gunmen stormed a north-central Nigerian boarding school early Wednesday, kidnapping at least 20 teenage boys, the local governor said—the second mass abduction of children to shake the country in three months. The attackers raided the Government Science Secondary School in the town of Kagara before sunrise and dragged the classmates into the dense woods. Three teachers and 12 family members also vanished into the night, Abubakar Sani Bello, the governor of Niger state, said on television. Schools in the region have been shuttered. Helicopters hovered over the treetops as security forces continued their search and, by midmorning, authorities were still counting the missing.

Bonswa, houngan Alex! Since it is a special season for Kouzen, is there anyway that those of us who have him can better serve or honor him this month at our spirit altars?
Hello!
I had a whole post written for you, and then the page reloaded and it was gone and I pulled at my hair a little bit. But, that’s okay.
The main thing I wrote re: specific offerings for Kouzen is that it’s best to inquire with your teacher re: what is best to offer Kouzen and how to offer it. Kouzen is very particular about some things and how his food and offerings are prepared is one of them; I had a whole lesson in how to make tchaka/tyaka, his favorite food, and it’s something that I do carefully even now.
May is the month Kouzen is celebrated, both because it is a month for agriculture and planting and because it is Haitian Heritage Month and Kouzen is the embodiment of the cultural memory of a largely agrarian society. What many vodouizan do during May is acts of charity it Kouzen’s name. In Haiti, it’s very common to prepare a big vat of tyaka and then distribute it to the poor who are begging for food or money to survive.
Given the current state of the world, committing to an act of charity in Kouzen’s name is a great way to honor this spirit that anyone can do without worrying about offending him or doing it wrong.
In Haitian Vodou, we say that without Kouzen we do not eat. In Haiti, a country that has largely survived on subsistence farming, that has been very literal for a very long time. Right now in the midst of the COVID19 crisis, food insecurity has become a huge issue among communities that have historically been marginalized in the US. Food pantries are struggling to keep up with demand and orgs that serve communities that feel the reality of systemic oppression are being hit hard.
With these things in mind, one way to honor Kouzen is to donate money or time to these orgs directly. Money is often preferable, as food banks can directly purchase food, but many sites that employ volunteers to pack and distribute food are struggling as well as people are understandably reticent to volunteer for anything right now.
To find local food banks, check out Feeding America or FoodPantries.org. Call your local orgs and ask how you can donate money or time.
Additionally, YMCA and YWCA branches are often distribution points for meals for school-age children who are no longer receiving meals at schools. Call and ask how you can help.
Mutual Aid networks have sprung up and are being used in city and state-wide efforts. Mutual Aid networks are doing contactless dropoff of meals and food for elders, formerly homeless folks, and other folks who are struggling right now. A Facebook search is a good way to get hooked up to either donate or volunteer.
Homeless orgs that provide meals are struggling to find donors and struggling to support guests who are COVID19+. Homeless services are the most underfunded human service field in the US and desperately need the means to help folks right now. In my city, there has been an effort to test every single person who is homeless (which is somewhere around 3000 individuals officially, and probably around 4500 unofficially) and upwards of 50% of those tested are positive with nowhere to go to isolate and recover. My city is progressive and has a lot of medical support for them, but many cities are not. Find your local orgs and give them money.
Kouzen also values his children highly, and right now his children in Haiti are poised to suffer a lot. Despite early aggressive measures to limit the spread of the virus, COVID19 is taking hold--as of today, there are somewhere around 500 confirmed cases which means there are probably five to six times that amount of people actually ill, as testing is very limited and many people are reticent to be tested. Donating to reputable NGOs and Haitian-led initiatives gives the folks on the ground the means to a) support and treat those who are ill and need to isolate, b) provide masks, gloves, and cleaning supplies to prevent spread, and c) continue with public health campaigns to spread information about how to prevent transmission. Here’s a list of reputable places to donate:
Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders is the premier medical organization in the world that provides free non-sectarian medical care in disaster areas and during emergencies. They have set up isolation units where they serve in Haiti and have been working hard on media campaigns around prevention. They have been in Haiti a long time and do really good work.
Health Equity International primarily supports and administers the St. Boniface Hospital in Fond-du-Blancs in the Sud department of Haiti. This is a comprehensive hospital that provides free care that can’t be found in other places (surgery, spinal cord injury rehab, dental care, etc) and training to Haitian doctors and nurses.
Youthaiti is a grassroots org in the Grand Anse department of Haiti that provides training to youth around sanitation and hygiene best practices and gives them job skills to bring back to their community. They work not to overwrite indigenous Haitian knowledge and practice around hygiene and sanitation, but to provide complimentary information that can be used to strengthen what is already in place. As much of Haiti does not have potable water and plumbing sufficient to remove the risk of the contamination of water with human waste, this is super important work. Their Facebook has a lot of information about their current COVID19 efforts as well.
Grown in Haiti is a small grassroots project that I really love. They focus on increasing biodiversity in food and small-scale farming to increase the ability for families to sustain themselves on re-created food forests and employ local youth to increase output and teach skills. As Haiti is increasingly deforested (charcoal is the primary affordable fuel there), this is a multi-faceted future-forward endeavor. Their Instagram documents their current efforts and projects.
A lot of arts-related NGOs have turned their efforts from producing art for sale to producing masks for medical personnel in Haiti and for Haitians. One in particular is Peace Quilts, which employs Haitian women artisans in Lilavois to produce art and handicrafts for fair and ethical wages. They’ve turned their production efforts entirely to masks right now, and donations are allowing them to purchase more mask-making material. They also provide regular updates on Facebook.
Anyone who verifies a donation (receipt or donation letter) to an org to support food security and/or efforts in Haiti to limit the spread of COVID19 can book a leson/reading with me for $10 off for the rest of May and for the entirety of June.
I hope this is helpful! Alaso Kouzen!!

quaranmemes for quarantines
I was tagged by @sparksearcher, thanks, this is a good one. It’s also a long one, so apologies to mobile users and for the rest of you:
when was the last time you left your home?
We took a drive yesterday but only got out of the car once, at a local farm stand. The pig smell was ripe and there were eight other people milling around so we got back in the car immediately. My last time inside a place of business was on the 13th, a stock-up trip to Aldi. Everyone was wearing a mask and they were controlling the number of shoppers with a “one in, one out” method. I don’t anticipate another grocery run for a few weeks.
what was the last thing you bought?
It was an onlline order of a 10-pack of washable cotton masks just this morning. I’ve crocheted some nifty washable masks using dishcloth yarn but without filter material they’re useless because of the holes in the work. But I think a combo of a crocheted mask with a filter and a cotton cloth mask would be effective.
is quarantine driving you insane or are you finally relaxed?
My brain is a jerk. I’m an introvert plus I’m agoraphobic so I’ve never minded staying home. It’s cozy and safe. Now that I can’t go anywhere, I literally want to go ALL OF THE PLACES ALL OF THE TIME. I’ve been having a tough time emotionally because everything feels dangerous now and I worry constantly...about my older high-risk husband, about my elderly parents, about my teenager’s future and on and on.
who are you spending quarantine with?
Russ, when he’s not scheduled to work, and Zack.
do you have pets to keep you company?
I don’t and honestly? I’m happy to not have a pet right now. I’m sure they provide welcome comfort but It’s stressful enough trying to make sure there are enough food and supplies in the house for the three of us plus making sure my elderly parents are provided for without having to plan bulk-buying trips for pet food and other things. I get to see Buddy and Bonnie next door and Paco and Lucky across the street plus it’s baby squirrel and baby bunny season in the garden.
what are your current responsibilities?
Planning meals, planning shopping trips, bulk cooking so we have freezer meals available just in case, keeping an eye on Zack with his online classes since he’s not feeling particularly motivated atm, lots of laundry when Russ is working, cleaning and sanitizing the house, planting and maintaining our flower, vegetable and herb gardens, keeping on top of the budget, making sure bills are paid, trying to keep in touch with friends and family and trying to keep my sanity. I am succeeding at only a few of these.
do you have a room to yourself?
Guest bedroom sometimes when Zack isn’t using it for online class. I’ve mainly been escaping to our unfinished basement because I love it down there. We have bookcases and chairs and lamps and an area rug and a super old TV/VHS combo and it’s always cool and quiet. I do my workouts or listen to podcasts and crochet or put in some ridiculous old movie from our VHS collection and just escape for a while.
are you exercising?
Some? Whatever viral thing I had in March caused a major POTS flare so my heart rate dictates how much I can exercise each day. Right now my O2 sat is hanging in around 94% and my resting pulse rate is in the 90s, sometimes the low 100s, so I have to pace myself. Just walking around can spike it to the 130s. I can’t do my favorite 90s workout MTV: THE GRIND, sad face. So it’s yoga or recumbent bike for now.
town, country, city?
We’re a city, population around 14,000, but in reality we’re a suburb of St. Louis.
how’s your toilet paper supply?
We’re wealthy. I started getting nervous about coronavirus back in the middle of February so every time I went shopping I picked up another pack. I didn’t hoard, just made sure I bought extra so we have about 45 rolls in the house right now.
what’s the worst thing that you had to cancel?
Two in-state college visits and one out-of-state visit. We’ve been planning and saving money for almost a year and had to cancel them all. Zack isn’t sure he wants to reschedule because he doesn’t know what the college experience will realistically look like for him in 2021. Which is logical but I’m still sad.
what’s the best thing you’ve had to cancel?
Dental work. It’s necessary but not emergent so it’s not being rescheduled until later this summer.
who do you miss the most?
This will sound perverse, because they’re the two people who drive me the absolute bat-shit craziest, but I miss visiting my parents. They won’t call me, refuse to let me shop for them, do not come to the door when I drop off whatever supplies I’m assuming they need and wouldn’t think of driving by our house even though we live less than a mile apart. I’ve not actually seen them since the end of February so I have no idea how they’re doing. They could be dead or hospitalized for all I know.
do you have any new hobbies?
Hell, no. I’m neglecting the few hobbies I have, I’m not thinking of new ones. What would I do? Learn a language, learn to play an instrument? I’m lucky if I remember to take a shower every day.
what are you watching the most?
I can’t watch scripted TV or movies right now because I sit there and think “I'm watching celebrities who make more money than I will ever have in my life and they’re safe from the pandemic so FUCK THEM” which kind of gets in the way of my enjoyment. I signed up for Ovid TV because I love documentaries but I can’t watch those, either. The pandemic is an emotional overlay of everything I try to consume right now, visual or written, so I’ve been going back and re-watching everything on LGR’s YouTube channel, especially the Sims Let’s Play videos. His Duke Nukem voice and the stupid shit he does like creating Fartwhistle Dingleprop and his Hat of Shame or putting the Sims’ toilet in the middle of a hedge maze hits the right spot for me now.
are you still going to work?
I’ve been out of work a long time. Russ is still working since he works for a public utility, at an evil, evil coal-burning power plant but hey, the electricity has to be generated somehow. The other options are nuclear, but Callaway scares the shit out of most Missourians and no one wants to pay the increased rates for green energy, so here we are. His team has been divided in three and they rotate three 12-hour days in a row and then seven or eight days off in between. He’s getting his full pay and I am enormously grateful.
what are you out of?
We’re honestly okay on everything. I started stocking up in mid-February, bought a chest freezer and filled it up and made sure we had plenty of everyone’s shelf-stable favorites. Plus I stocked up on paper towels and disinfecting wipes and hand soap and toiletries. I’m starting to get a little low on eggs but a local restaurant is selling grocery items during the shutdown so I can get a flat when I need them.
have you made any changes to your hair during quarantine?
Nope. I’m allergic to hair dye and my stylist hasn’t found a formulation yet that works for me and I’m not messing with henna. So it’s the same old gray + mousy brown. It’s lovely. I’m letting my hair grow because my emotional state is precarious enough. If I do a hack job with kitchen scissors and cringe every time I look in the mirror, that’s not helping. It’s about an inch past my shoulders now and my fringe is long enough to be swept to the side but I have to hold it in place with barrettes because it’s heavy so I look like a sad old scene girl.

Your mouth is an intelligent system made to work with every piece doing its part. When you’re missing a tooth, the empty spaces are more than unsightly; they can be dangerous. Your other teeth, your gums, and even the bones in your face rely on you having a full smile.
Enter: dental implants. Thanks to improved technology, you can replace a single tooth or a whole row of teeth quickly and effectively. Dental implants can improve your overall oral health and are now considered the gold standard in tooth replacement technology.
Your Salt Lake City dentists at Natural Smiles Dentistry offers professional placement and restoration of dental implants, so let us tell you more about them and how they can help protect your greatest asset and secure your smile!
How Do Dental Implants Work?
Teeth have even more going on under the surface of your gums than above. What you see when you look at your teeth is the hard, white crown. (See, you knew you must be royalty!) Then, like a plant, each tooth has a long root extending down into the jawbone.
Nearly 98% of implant treatments are successful, and healthy implants can last a lifetime when properly cared for. Dental implants are highly successful because they closely imitate your natural tooth in every way. Implant teeth have a top crown and a permanent root fixed into your jawbone—unlike traditional dental restorations that only replace the visible crown.
The Security of Dental Implants
The fact that dental implants are permanent and made to integrate perfectly into your mouth gives them the potential to benefit your overall health and wellness in many ways, such as:
Implants prevent your other teeth from moving.
Implants prevent your jawbone from deteriorating.
Unlike ill-fitting restorations, implants alleviate pain and discomfort.
Implants are cleaned and maintained using the same methods as natural teeth.
Implants won’t break as natural teeth can.
Implants are easier to floss between and clean than a removable bridge, making prevention of gum disease and bad breath a snap.
Implants also make speaking, eating, and kissing easier so life is a lot more fun!
Should You Get Dental Implants?
Getting dental implants requires that your gums and jaw are relatively healthy to start, and you must be committed to proper oral hygiene to maintain them so they last a lifetime. Only your [CITY] dentist can tell you if implants are the best option for you.
If you’re missing a tooth, don’t delay! Contact Natural Smiles Dentistry and let’s get started on giving you a smile you can wear with security and confidence.

I researched Elder Scrolls dental care for a fanfic I’m writing. In ESO, there’s a jeweled toothbrush, and I also researched medieval toothbrushes and found that they’re actually not that difficult to make.
My guess is that toothbrushes are widely used and dental care is recognized as important, though the specifics may vary greatly between cultures. Apart from toothbrushes, there are things called chewing sticks that were once used to clean teeth. I think this is a likely alternative for those who can’t afford to purchase or make toothbrushes. Toothpaste would be like medieval toothpastes, made from ground sage and salt, powdered charcoal, animal fat, etc. For floss, horse hair or plant fiber maybe? Toothpicks made from wood and bone too. And enchantments on the dental care stuff, depending on culture.
Gonna put race-specific stuff under a readmore because long
Bosmer probably use bone and animal hair toothbrushes rather than wood and plant fibers, due to the green pact. Toothpaste isn’t exactly necessary, but if they did use some I’d guess it would be made out of charcoal and animal fat, or just charcoal, and water. I suppose they might carve rock for the toothbrushes too, and for toothpaste containers.
Khajiit probably use toothbrushes, maybe even multiple sizes too; larger ones for their larger teeth (canines and molars), smaller ones for their smaller teeth (all the other teeth ig). I’m thinking a large variety based on preference, since Elsweyr has a lot of different resources. The toothpastes would also have a wider variety, and dental care stuff would probably be a major staple of trading. Might have tongue scrapers too, to get the plaque and stuff off of them.
Altmer are probably fancier. Stylistic and aesthetic toothbrushes as a show of extravagance. Toothpaste would be fancy, too. Pastes with standard cleansing stuff, but also pastes with herbs, minerals, edible flower pieces, the like. Even their chewing sticks would be decorated, probably enchanted. Each race would probably have their own art styles with decorated chewing sticks.
Dunmer probably mainly use charcoal as a toothpaste, maybe with herbs or alchemical ingredients mixed in. The great houses may even have created spells for dental care, and might have servants who act as ‘dentists’ and clean their teeth. Spells would allow for more time between cleaning, most likely. As for the toothbrushes, I’m thinking chewing sticks for ashlanders, ash in the bristles of a toothbrush would be gross. They’d have protective cases for the chewing sticks to keep them free of ash, I think. For the cities, toothbrushes that also have protective cases, if you can afford it. Raven Rock would mostly use chewing sticks, at least before the mine reopened.
Orsimer would be like the Khajiit in that they have multiple sizes of brushes. One for their smaller teeth, one for their larger teeth. Couldn’t find any details about 4E Orsinium, so I’m gonna talk about the strongholds in Skyrim. I’m gonna guess that they’d use toothbrushes made of wood and animal bone with bristles of animal hair. Powdered charcoal for toothpaste, maybe with salt and herbs too.
Argonians would probably use mostly chewing sticks since all their teeth seem to be sharp. If they used toothpaste, they might use it with their fingers or with brushes made with wood and plant fibers or animal hair. They’d also have some kinds of dental tools for parasites or the like that are in the Black Marsh that I don’t know any of the specifics of.
Redguard would use mostly chewing sticks. Sand in toothbrush bristles would also be gross. I feel like families and people would buy chewing sticks in bulk because of how difficult constantly going to trade for them would be, for more isolated places. Wouldn’t be decorated, decorated chewing sticks in bulk would be expensive. People might carve or decorate their own chewing sticks though, maybe even have a family style that they add. Might use toothbrushes and paste in the grasslands of Hammerfell.
Imperials get a lot of trade, and a lot of immigrants, so I’m thinking they have a big combination of dental care stuff and habits. Feel like they’d mostly have toothbrushes though. They’d probably have access to a lot of options thanks to the trading companies, so it’d be up to preference.
Nords find dental care very important. Especially since their main drink is mead, which is fermented honey. All that sugar would rot their teeth right out of their heads. Toothbrushes and paste for pretty much everyone. There’d be those who believe they don’t need it because they’re a strong Nord, of course. Paste would be the standard charcoal. There’s a lot of salt around Skyrim though, so it might have salt mines, or maybe they get it from the Sea of Ghosts? So I think dried sage and salt would be the main paste actually, maybe with some mint. Dental sticks for the poorer or more isolated.
Breton dental hygiene would have a lot of influence from the Altmer probably. So toothbrushes and chewing sticks would be painted or carved, but only the rich would get truly extravagant stuff. Paste would be standard charcoal or some kind of herbal pastes. The style of the decorations would depend. There’d probably be designs more Altmer, Nedic, or even Druidic in nature. Would probably have enchanted stuff like the Altmer.
Do you have any thoughts on hygiene habits of Tamriel?
OKAY SO, I am very passionate about the idea that people in Tamriel are NOT dirty. I'm nowhere near an expert on TES lore and stuff, so everything I'm listing are just personal headcanons for a few parts of Tamriel.
Of course bathing habits will vary within different areas, but I genuinely believe that good hygiene is practiced thoroughly and frequently, regardless of social status and class.
I don't know much on soap making, but most of Tamriel's soap would be made of lard (or other animal fats and oils) and lye, and scented with various plant extracts if you have the extra coin for it. Commoners and middle/lower class citizens would likely only bathe once a week unless working a dirty job, and those of more noble status would probably have the luxury to a bath every other day, or even daily.
Magical Alchemy is also a thing in TES, so I don't doubt the possibility of body washes, perfume, and antiperspirant solutions or potions. There's also clearly sewer systems and some sort of knowledge of plumbing, so I like to think the really rich assholes would possibly have running water in their homes. Especially in Markarth, where Dwarven technology and architecture is at their fingertips.
I refuse to believe people in Skyrim are yucky. Nords are modeled after Vikings, who were notorious for having excellent hygiene (for the times, anyway) and many Viking graves have things suck as tooth picks, hair combs, nail trimmers, etc. in them. People in more rural areas like Kynesgrove, Rorikstead, Shor's stone, etc. wouldn't have as much every-day access to luxuries like quality soap or clean water, (especially during the Civil war) so they might be generally a little bit “dirtier.”
Places like the Summerset aisles and Cyrodiil would be probably be much more hoity toity about bathing and taking care of the body, with things like lotions, moisturizers, creams, scented oils, and hair butters being common household items among people of all social statuses. I feel like Altmer would definitely take milk baths in attempts to further slow signs of ageing, and probably pour healing potions into bath water to rid themselves of any “flaws” like cuts, scrapes, bruises, and blemishes.
Some parts of Tamriel may even use sugar waxing for body hair removal, or have specially crafted razor blades for shaving. Probably more common in Summerset, as I can’t see Nords giving a fuck about shaved legs when it’s -10 degrees and snowy, or Dunmer when they get coated in ash wherever they go anyways.
Khajiit would be VERY meticulous with hygiene and cleanliness, considering they’re covered in fur. Tics, mites, and fleas could become a serious problem and easily transmit sickness. The hot climate of Elsweyr would also be a BREEDING GROUND for diseases, especially in the rain forests. Fur and manes would be brushed twice daily, in the morning upon rising and at night before laying down to sleep. Braids and twists would be common hairstyles for convenience, and claws would be regularly filed. They probably make scrubs and soaps out of Moon Sugar and cocoa butter. Sleek, shiny fur is highly sought after, with Elsweyr and neighboring countries being notorious for their excellent hair care products.
As said above, those living in more tropical/warm climates like Hammerfell, Valenwood, Summerset, and Elsweyr would have easy access to things like coconut oil, cocoa butter and shea butter, which would all be used for moisturizing and hair care. Minus Valenwood mostly, because of the green pact.
Dunmer would likely come up with a lot of neat ways to use ash and charcoal for things like face masks, exfoliating scrubs, and even antioxidant/antibacterial ointments. Pumice stones for scrubbing and exfoliating the skin too! Soap made from sload oil and the fresh ashes of Red Mountain would likely be highly sought after in other provinces for it's rumored healing properties, and probably makes many Dunmer merchants stinkin' rich. Mud masks from Black Marsh are also credited for their rejuvenating and detoxifying benefits.
I don’t headcanon the Argonians as using many soaps frequently, as their scales can be very sensitive and dry out easily, which would cause painful rashes. They also spend a lot of time in water daily anyway, and likely wouldn’t need to use soap often unless they were going for a dive in a nasty swamp and needed to do some serious scrubbing. Their resistance to disease would likely ease any fears about getting sick from bacteria and dirt, and I’m 100% sure any human that isn’t careful while visiting Black Marsh would probably catch a deadly disease and die horrifically from what Argonians would call a common cold. I do see them using a wide variety of mud masks though, and likely have spas with fish that help pick off old, dry, and cracked scales. Sort of like those weird fucked up fish pedicures we have.

10.19.21 Letter to Mom
Dear mom,
I hope your mouth is feeling better after dental surgery. What have you been up to in Kansas? What have you been reading and watching lately? I can probably guess you’ve already seen Squid Game. Did it lead you to think of how it compares to real life?
My favorite place to buy food is this Balkan and Mediterrannean grocery (called Parrot Coffee) that’s a five minute walk from my apartment. I like to buy jasmine tea, orange blossom honey, cardamom coffee, walnut and pistachio baklava, rose jam, dried hibiscus flowers, and the locally made bread there. It sells a range of goods that I don’t always recognize, because the labels are in another language. The aisles are thin and cramped and squeezing past people is a pain. The store owner always speaks another language to her customers (it sounds like one of the Balkan languages) but switches to English when she sees me. This store, and this neighborhood, reminds me of Europe. There’s of course the polish deli with the snacks that I eat without even knowing what the labels say, and then the Polish grocery across it, and also all the languages I hear while walking through the streets; a mix of Russian and Arabic and Polish and Spanish. The cafes with people drinking wine and a guitarist and bassist playing jazz for them and the warm lights strung in the trees when it’s night, the smell of freshly baked pastries and coffee, the fruits and vegetables displayed outside the groceries, the flowers and the potted plants lining the sidewalks, remind me of the cobblestoned avenues of European cities. There’s also a thrift store, where I would go in a few times to play the violin in the window display, and a bookstore where I discovered one of the books I’m currently reading, The Island of the Day Before by Umberto Eco. People walking around with a baguette sticking out of their bag, or Italian music drifting from a café, or the sound of a violin from an open window.
Where are your own favorite places to go in Kansas? I miss the Indian creek trail, and the violin shop in Merriam, and the sheet music store, and Paneras, and the fairytale neighborhood. And the Union Station, and Kauffman Center, and the Iranian restaurant that had my favorite rice pudding.
If you got to live in an apartment in the city how would you decorate it? I can see you filling it with plants and a red couch, and maybe lots of futons for when you have friends visit and stay over, and many big mirrors for when you dress up for the day and go out, and a vintage vanity dresser.
I’ve been looking around my apartment and examining my possessions lately. Each one tells a story about me–each one is connected to a memory of how I obtained the object. The most interesting interiors to me are the ones where every item tells a story, not those generic magazine interiors that are premeditated and fit together too seamlessly. Which reminds me–how has the slow downsizing and cleaning out of the house been so far? Have you been able to get rid of the excess of clothing & items that have piled up over the years? I wish I could be there to help, I love getting rid of things but I’m not sure if you’d be too pleased with my methods.

12 Healthy & Sustainable Deodorants for Men & Women
Nobody wants to smell bad. And to avoid this, people around the world spend more than $ 74 billion annually on antiperspirants and deodorants. Many of these products contain harmful ingredients and are packaged in plastic that is difficult to recycle. But here’s a better way: natural deodorants that offer a more sustainable way to smell and feel fresh.
Commercially marketed armpit deodorants came on the market in the late 19th century; Antiperspirants came a little later, in the early 1900s. By 2019, more than 339.6 billion units of popular deodorant brands had been sold in the US alone – most of them packaged in plastic. In addition to the waste of plastic packaging, many of these popular antiperspirant deodorants contain harmful toxins such as phthalates, triclosan, parabens, and aluminum, which are harmful to health and cause air and water pollution.
If you want to lead a more natural and sustainable lifestyle, changing your deodorant is easy. Here are 12 natural deodorants that fight BO without harming your body, and come in more sustainable packaging that is kind to the environment.

Insurance question? please help me i need to know what to do.?
im 16, had my license for a little over a month. i live in california. im with allstate. here's what happened: i was backing out of a diagonal parking space. i was at starbucks, mid day. no one else was in the car. i saw a car coming, i let it pass, and i backed out. turns out it didnt clear out all the way. i got the rear end of it. their dent is not too bad, the bumper is fine, its just a little bit of the metal that probably needs to be sucked back out. it is an suv. my dent however was worse. the bumper got dented, and so did some of the medal around it. the brake light has a small crack in it, but its only visible from close up, and it still works. we exchanged information, and he said he will call his insurance company tomorrow morning. will my insurance go up? how much will i need to pay to have his car fixed? whats gonna happen? please help me im freaking out. thank you soo much""

Car insurance questions - with regards to cancelling due to cheaper quote?
I have a couple of questions with regards to my car insurance. First of all, if I do a search on moneysupermarket.com/gocompare.com etc, will it record a search on my credit file? Also, if I do decide to shop around, and find a policy cheaper than what I'm currently paying, can I cancel my existing policy before it's due to end? Insured under fathers plan, also clean record (51 and 1 ticket?) Alright, I'm currently under my fathers policy and am driving his vehicle to school and back. Soon we will be purchasing a vehicle for my own, and I have a few questions. To be frank, I am looking at mustangs. Not v6s, but GT v8s, preferably standard transmissions. Dad's biggest problem is insurance, which is understandable. My question is how much said insurance would cost/ raise his existing policy? -I like this model because I want a vehicle with performance. When I think of performance, Muscle comes into mind. The quintessential of this and most feasible is a mustang. Many older versions (such as 1990's, early 2000's) so they are affordable, and I just like them. Also I know a considerable amount of knowledge for my age about vehicles due to helping in my grandfathers garage past summers and many weekend projects.""

Best place to purchase health insurance?
I am starting my own small business and need health insurance for my family. I won't go with Kaiser, please don't ask why. I need an HMO with no deductable or a very low deductable because in my area the Blue Cross, Blue Shield, HealthNet networks have pretty good doctors and hospitals within their approved networks. It will be a family-owned sole prop business. I live and work in California, but if there is value in incorporating in another state for the purpose of taxes or prices on health insurance, I guess I could do it...because I have not formally formed the corporation yet. Temporary vehicle registration and insurance in California for uk citizen?
Hi, Myself and a friend will be travelling to California next month to purchase a 1960s vw campervan. We will be driving it to the shipping port to export it back to the uk. I've been told we can get a temporary registration which lasts 28 days and will allow us to drive the van. I've been on the californian DMV website but cannot find any more information or the forms. no email address either! So far I just know we will need to have an insurance certificate to get the temporary registration. Couple of questions really, Do I need to purchase a van before I can get the temporary registration? Ideally I would like to go buy a van and drive it away there and then from the seller but Im thinking I'll have to put a deposit down or similar and get the info and go to the DMV before I can take it away? Second question is insurance, I guess the best idea would be to go with an American company. Will they insure a uk citizen who's just over for a few weeks with just a uk driving license? Any suggestions of companies who may do so? In the uk we have a company called swift who only deal online. This would be ideal because then I wouldn't need an address forms/certificates to be sent. Any ideas? Reason were not getin it transported is because we want to do a bit of travelling on route to a east coast port.""

Car insurance -- should they cover these expenses?
I had an accident a month or two ago. It was in a rental car. I found out today that the insurance company had disallowed some of the charges that the rental company tried to pass to them. The charges are $100 for an administrative fee $200.89 loss of use fee $139.38 diminished value fee. Who should pay these charges? Should I fork this money over to the car rental company? Should the insurance company pay them? What strategy should I use in my conversations with them? My feeling is that I have insurance, it should pay everything which is an actual cost above and beyond the deductible. ie if I have to pay it, the insurance company should have to pay it. On the other hand, if they are somehow bogus charges, then the rental company can eat it, and that's fine. Thought?""

His insurance company is still investigating and waiting for pics of the scene and his friends statement. I was told by his insurance company (USAA) that witnesses not listed on the police report could not be used, but his friend is not on the police report and they are waiting for her statement. NC State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and the driver was cited for failure to yield the right of way. The driver was apologetic and admitted several times around a number of people that he must have blanked out or was daydreaming from the frustration of the school bus. USAA is saying that they need to make sure that my daughter was not 1% at fault, meaning speeding perhaps. The officer estimated her speed at impact at around 40 mph and the speed limit is 55mph. She hit the drivers back tire of his Jeep Wrangler (small truck) causing him to rest in a small trench or ditch ion the side of the attempted driveway. The front passenger side above the front tire and the front by the headlight is damaged on her car. She tried to avoid him, protect her younger sister (13) and avoid veering to much left in fear of hitting the school bus. My girls were terrified when I arrived 15 minutes after the accident. USAA stated that she may have had time to instanly stop, but she tried everything that she could do. In my opinion, she should have never been put into that situation. USAA is saying that points of contact are off, but my insurance agent said that she hit the back tire because a Jeep Wrangler is only 5 ft long and he was not towing a boat or driving a common sized vehicle. Plus the driver admitted to pushing down on the accelerator when he realized what was happening. I just need to have someones advice on this matter before hiring a lawyer. Thank you.""
Insurance rate?
Is it more money (insurance wise) for a new driver to drive a new car or a used car. Give an estimate of how much more?
Looking for a very rough estimate on insurance costs for an 08' Lambo?
I'm a 21 year old woman. The car has just over 10k miles on it It's an 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder It's listed for $150,000 I'm in school with no income I have money (idk if this is required for an estimate, but w/o getting specific, i have money) The car would be a rental (yes strange i know, but bear w/ me here) I live in a metropolitan area. Never been in an accident (but again idk if this matters since it's going to be a rental) Umm... that's all i can think of that would be required. If i'm missing anything let me know. And again i know you can't get very specific, but if you could give me a general range that insurance would be per year that would be wonderful. Thanks!""

What are the loopholes for lowering your car insurance? Ie. will putting the car in my parents name lower the insurance? Adding someone else on? Lowering the estimated value? etc.

Legal question about car insurance.?
My son was at a party, an aquaintance asked for his car keys to get some drink out of the boot. He then stole the car and crashed it. Only a provisional licence. I got into a motorcycle accident. insurance question...?
When I wiped out on my bike I tried to make a claim after I got home from the hospital. Little did I know that my insurance coverage had ended two days before the accident. Now my question is, will my health insurance pay for my medical bills from the accident or will they deny me because of my lack of motorcycle insurance at the time of the accident? When I found out about my lack of coverage, I immediately paid and got up to date but they told me that those two days when my coverage ended will not be covered... am I gonna get hit with all the medical bills? Or will my health insurance step up and cover me?""
