ok i'm a little nervous abt this but here goes!! here's my submission for @kirbyoctournament!!
quilt knight, reporting for duty!!
Tumblr media
name!! ; quilt knight! ( her real name is marin!! quilt / quilty work too :] ( her dad also tends to call her " my little knight. " ) )
pronouns!! ; she / her!!
personality!! ; brave and kind, ( to a fault, admittedly ) quilt knight tries her best to uphold what she thinks are the most important aspects of knighthood; loyalty, courage, and helping those in need! she's passionate, driven, and always willing to lend a hand! on the downside, quilty is also a bit naive, and her curiosity tends to get the better of her. she has a bit of a savior complex, and tends to put herself in harms way more than she admittedly should...
no need to worry, though! she'll be just fine! :]
backstory!! : hailing from planet earthfall, quilt knight was inspired to become a knight after hearing stories about her father, who had been a knight himself before she was born. not long after she became a teen, she began training to take up the knight mantle, and continue what her father had been doing. after becoming an adult, and improving her arching skills significantly, quilt left her home planet in order to search the galaxy for those in need! she's gone to many different planets, staying longer on some compared to others, but always moving in search of the next person in need! she's made plenty of friends, but has made the most on popstar!! she tends to visit popstar every now and again to visit her buddies who live there, before leaving for an new planet once again.
she's still very close to her father, and visits him during her downtime. he actually made the quilt that she uses as a cape!
and that's all!!

Kirby AU talk: "Friendship Really Does Shine Like A Star!"
This AU heavily rewrites the story of Star Allies, rewrites a small part of the story of Forgotten Land, and does a few more extra things. All the other games that take place before Star Allies and Forgotten Land stay the same.
Four big things happen here:
-The villain group in Star Allies is much more threatening in this AU.
-An extra wave of dream friends accompanies Kirby and co.
-All the dream friends show up in Forgotten Land in post-game.
-Some extra masks are added to Merry Magoland.
Now, let's go into all of this in detail.
Before this AU's Star Allies events begin, there's a prologue of Hyness attempting to use up all the dark energy the cult currently has to power up the Jamba heart in hopes of summoning Void Termina.
However... there's a problem. There's not enough dark energy to activate the Jamba heart. Void Termina cannot be summoned yet.
It's only about 60% complete. The cult needs to expand on its believers to radiate more dark energy to be capable of fully activating the Jamba heart. The cult is going to need to invade planets for this.
And so Hyness orders his three generals, The Three Mage Sisters, to take their armies and invade planets to force people to join the cult against their will. Each Mage Sister has her own respective army of Jammerjabs, and so there are three Jambastion armies out to force expansion for the cult. Hyness will stay at the Divine Terminus to keep watch, as this is the very area where he'll summon Void Termina.
Tumblr media
The Mage Sisters start invading a handful of planets with their armies. They relentlessly coerce people in the cult by overpowering them and then throwing corrupted dark hearts at them (like how Kirby throws friend hearts). When someone is joined into the cult by being influenced by a dark heart, it radiates dark energy that the cult will then use to power up the Jamba heart to summon Void Termina.
After invading a planet, the Mage Sisters are then free to run rampant around it, causing random chaos and killing people with their weapons. The planets they invade become stomping grounds.
Planet Earthfall, Planet Misteen, Planet Caverna, Planet Frostak, Planet Towara and Star Lavadom all get conquered by the cult. Not just that, but their respective smaller-sized stars get conquered too.
There still isn't enough dark energy radiated from all those conquests, however. The cult will still need to invade more planets.
After the cult conquers all those planets, Popstar is the next planet that the cult has their eyes on. And it's a much bigger planet than all the previous planets that were conquered, so the cult deduces that it may be able to finally summon Void Termina if it conquers Popstar.
All three of the Mage Sisters come into Popstar with their respective armies in an attempt to dominate the peculiarly star-shaped planet.
This is, of course, when Kirby and all the dream friends get involved. This is when the group eventually bands together to stop the cult.
King Dedede and Meta Knight get captured and are fed dark hearts. Kirby will have to fight them to knock the dark influence out of them.
While Kirby saves Popstar from the cult's domination, the dream friends gradually tag alongside him as they're all trying to fight back as well. They all agree that joining up with Kirby will increase the odds of victory and to finally put the cult in their place. Bandana Waddle Dee is the first one to join Kirby, as they meet up shortly after the grand adventure begins. All of the others then show up at later points.
All the dream friends in the canon Star Allies show up. This, indeed, means the wave 1, wave 2 and wave 3 groups as we know them.
Rick, Kine, Coo, Gooey and Marx show up to join the team early on. Adeleine, Ribbon, Daroach and Dark Meta Knight show up to join the team sometime after Dedede gets saved. Magolor, Taranza and Susie show up to join the team sometime after Meta Knight gets saved.
But the troubles in Popstar aren't over after Meta Knight gets saved. The cult still has strongholds on some places on the planet. The group still has to eliminate those strongholds and chase the Mage Sisters and their armies out of Popstar. And after they get chased out of the planet, three more people then show up to join the star allies.
Yes, that's right. Three more dream friends. An entire new wave of dream friends joins the group. That means even more help! Hooray!
Here are the three extra dream friends that join the group:
Tumblr media
Gryll swoops by to join the star allies. This silly onion witch lady was once an adversary to Kirby, but they've made up a long time after. She's a buddy now! She's got many magical powers that she can use to fight the cult with, such as spawning star blocks out of her hands that she can throw in rapid succession, and many other various magic that her broom is able to perform. Gryll seems to enjoy chaos, so she might go a little bit nuts when fighting alongside the others. Gryll also appears to have history with Marx, as they were happy to see each other when she came to join the team shortly before they depart from Planet Popstar.
Drawcia shows up?!? What a surprise!!! She didn't even make up with Kirby before this, but it's still very much appreciated that she seemingly wants to help with the rest! Able to use all the attacks that she did when she fought Kirby a long time ago before this, Drawcia will be sure to make a great asset to the star allies. That being said, though, while Drawcia appears to have softened up a little bit compared to before, she's still incredibly morally grey. She can be considered another 'evil token' star ally, similarly to Dark Meta Knight.
Prince Fluff was hoping for the day he'd assist Kirby in another adventure. He's proud to have finally gotten that chance now! He's a bit of a prideful one. Although Fluff isn't only joining just to feed his ego by adventuring with Kirby again, he's also joining because his home of Patch Land was being threatened by the cult. He found a way to lock up the sock that serves as the gateway to his home to prevent the cult from going there, and then he's ready to join. Fluff can use all the attacks that he used during his adventure with Kirby.
After these three join the team, and after the team leaves Popstar, they go to the Jambastion fortress when they saw the Mage Sisters flee there. They hunt the Mage Sisters down and beat them up again.
But the Mage Sisters still don't give up. They inform that they're still fully intent on getting the dark energy needed to summon their god, and that they've already made a lot of progress in doing so with the handful of planets they've already conquered before this. The time on the Jambastion fortress ends with Zan Partizanne maniacally laughing as she destroys the fortress, forcing the star allies to leave the area and to go save all the planets that the cult has dominated.
The star allies go to each of the corrupted planets one-by-one. They save the planets in mostly the same order as canon, except that Star Lavadom gets visited before Planet Towara. Planet Towara is the last of the conquered planets that the star allies rescues from the cult.
After the star allies free denizens of Planet Towara from the cult's influence, something terrible happens. The Mage Sisters appear to have planned a surprise attack, as they then ambush the star allies, catch them off guard, and they literally kidnap Kirby in the process.
Yes, you heard that right. The Mage Sisters kidnap Kirby. They then fly off, maniacally laughing as they carry the pink puffball with them back to the Jambandran base. This enrages all the other star allies, as they unite closer together with the collective goal to save Kirby.
Although Kirby already gets taken to Hyness before the star allies can get to him. The cult threw a bunch of dark hearts at Kirby, as he was refusing to let himself join the cult, but it still radiated dark energy.
When the star allies show up at the Divine Terminus, they beat up the Mage Sisters and Hyness, and then free Kirby. But after he's freed, Hyness then throws the Mage Sisters and himself onto the Jamba heart in a desperate attempt to power it up, and luckily for them, it just suddenly has enough power to finally summon Void Termina.
The star allies destroy Void Termina. Hyness and the Mage Sisters then end up finding themselves into Another Dimension, which kickstarts events that are very similar to that of the events of HiAD.
HiAD plays out mostly the same in this AU as it does in regular canon, but a difference in the ending. When Kirby throws friend hearts at the four cultists... it appears that there's something wrong.
Francisca, Flamberge and Hyness appear to come out perfectly fine, but Zan Partizanne appears to be seriously injured. She's still alive, but she clearly needs treatment or else she'll eventually die. Hyness and the other two Mage Sisters freak out over this. They profusely apologize to the star allies, and thankfully Kirby forgives them and is willing to help them out in saving Zan's life. Eventually, the cult goes back to their home in Jambandran base just in time while Zan is still alive, and they're able to get the necessary treatment for her to live.
Zan Partizanne survives a close brink of death. And she's then super grateful to the rest of the star allies for helping out in saving her.
Hyness and the Mage Sisters are then onto the star allies' good side.
They, as well as the rest of the star allies, regularly keep in touch with Kirby. This includes Dark Meta Knight and Drawcia, who didn't make up with Kirby before this adventure, but they then became friends with him during it. Kirby grew on everyone in the team afterwards.
All the star allies show up in Forgotten Land after Fecto Elfilis gets defeated. Most of Forgotten Land's events mainly stay the same as in canon, as the main adventure before the Fecto Elfilis fight is not changed. However, after Elfilis is defeated, and when Kirby and Elfilin have to save Leongar, that's when all the star allies show up in Waddle Dee Town, intending to help clean up the mess that occurred.
They all got there through Magolor's ship. The Lor Starcutter was able to locate the place of the Forgotten Land during the events of the main story, and so he gathered up all the other star allies. The Lor traveled through dimensions to get to the Forgotten Land. As they came there and helped clean up the place, they met Clawroline and the others of the Beast Pack. They'd then met Elfilin and Leongar after the latter finally gets saved. Kirby would've needed to help clean up the Forgotten Land otherwise, but it turns out that he doesn't need to. All the other star allies showed up to do exactly just that!
A portal gets set up for people to travel between Popstar and the Forgotten Land literally anytime. This is a gift from the Beast Pack.
When Magolor opens up his amusement park of Merry Magoland some time after, four more masks get added that aren't present in the actual Magoland in RTDL Deluxe. All the 86 masks that show up in the game are still present in this AU's Magoland, but 4 get added.
These four masks are based on Gryll, Prince Fluff, Gorimondo and Sillydillo. Not gonna lie, I'm not sure why they didn't have masks for the latter two when they have masks for the other two in the Beast Pack. And of course, Gryll and Prince Fluff could use Magoland masks since they're in the star allies in this AU.
Now there are 90 masks for Merry Magoland instead of 86.
That's basically it for the major events of this AU. Other than Gryll, Drawcia and Prince Fluff getting accustomed with the rest of the star allies and how those three interact with the others, but that's for another day. I may or may not make a separate post going over that!
With moments like all the star allies showing up to save Kirby after he's kidnapped by the Mage Sisters, and all the star allies showing up at the Forgotten Land through Magolor's ship to clean up the place, the name title given to this AU very much becomes a true statement.
Friendship really does shine like a star!
-----
That sums up the synopsis for this AU! I must thank you so much if you've taken the time to read it all. I know there's a lot here, but thanks regardless if you've gotten through it! This is a big juicy AU.
This is the last of the AUs that I'm making a synopsis for.
Here are the links to the other AUs I've made synopses for:
Dark Stormy Matters: Kracko fuses with Dark Matter in a desperate attempt to finally get back at Kirby with as much power as he can.
Memories Still At A Halt: Accidentally encountering an active clockwork star, Susie makes a wish to it that revives her dad. But he still doesn't recognize her as his daughter after being brought back.
Hope Within The Darkness: Morpho Knight makes the rare decision to bring the Dark Matter Swordsman back to life after watching him get horribly mistreated by the rest of the Dark Matter clan in hades. DMS adopts the name 'Blade' as he tries to fit in with Kirby and the rest of his friends, which ends up being extremely awkward at first.
If anyone decides to come to my inbox and ask something about one of these four AUs, I'd be hugely appreciative! I won't encourage it necessarily, but I'd love to hear people's feedback on any of these.
But with that, that ends the post. See y'all later!

Sons of Mars refs and nods pt1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I put a lot of references into Sons of Mars and I thought it'd be fun to have a post detailing all the nods and research from the comics there are!
The title is a spin on the Martian Manhunter solo (written by John Ostrander and drawn by Tom Mandrake) collection title.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We pulled the idea of J'onn and Ma'al going on a pilgrimage as a form of revisiting their origin story from the first issue of the "Son of Mars" collection, Pilgrimage. This line is lifted more or less from the comic (we even wanted J'onn to be talking to Clark like he does in the source material).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Double Stuff the cat is from Action Comics #1037 Martian Manhunter: A Face In The Crowd (written by Shawn Aldridge and art by Adrianna Melo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This line about memories being passed down as a form of history is from In my Life (pt 1) (written by Ostrander, drawn by Eduardo Barreto). We pulled most of J'onn and Ma'al's relationship from this comic, since it goes into a lot of detail about their origin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The general look of Mars (from the martians to the environments) largely pull from Martian Manhunter 2019: Identity (written by Steve Orlando with art by Riley Rossmo). I really like that they clearly took their time to develop a unique visual language for Mars, especially the organic look of the buildings and the fun shapes of the spaceships. Rossmo does not get enough credit for creating such a fresh take on not only the environments but the martians as well! All the martians look unique and have different outfits, which we wanted to do as well!
Our only rule for the environment was that we didn't want any pyramids. Because ancient astronaut theory is racist garbo and I don't want it in my Martian worldbuilding!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This page with Sha'sheen and M'yrnn is a direct homage to their page from In my Life. Idk how it happened but the parents look very t4t in our version lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another homage to In my Life. I wanted to imitate the color scheme and the martian outfits here too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More In my Life homages! This time it's the manhunter training montage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Telescope romance scene is from MM 2019: Identity! The color scheme and the vibes were already great, I didn't change much haha. M'yri'ah's characterization, J'onn geeking out about other planets, and J'onn's parents' disapproval of M'yri'ah as a partner are all from Identity. I really liked how that story fleshed her out as a character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also based M'yri'ah's design off of her Identity true and public forms. I went for less pixar-mom hourglass shape and more buff and built since she's a fighter in our version. We wanted her to be as much a renaissance man as J'onn is often depicted as.
M'yri'ah refers to Earth as Thu'ulc'andra and Mars is referred to as Ma'aleca'andra in our comic. This is a continuation of Ostrander referencing CS Lewis' Space Trilogy for how martians named other planets. However! In Ostrander's version he named earth Per'elandra, which is what Venus is referred to in the Space trilogy. This was later changed via community poll by Orlando for Identity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kind of a homage to In my Life (pt3): Earthfall, but really I found an opportunity to continue the tradition of showcasing martian boinking that always happens in J'onn's origin story for some reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not a Martian Manhunter reference, but more a new spin on White Martians. Inspired off of the Draag from the French film, Fantastic Planet. I love colossal set pieces~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More In my Life parallels :>
That's all I can fit into one post for now! Pt 2 coming soon :)
Pt 1 | Pt 2 | Pt 3

Races Among the Stars 9: Elves
Tumblr media
(art by RoninDude on DeviantArt)
And we’re back with more playable species in Starfinder, and today we’re looking at another holdover from Pathfinder, elves!
Elves in particular are perhaps one of the easiest transfers from Pathfinder to Starfinder lore-wise, because it’s already canon that elves were already starfarers even in the distant past!
Indeed, the elves were originally from the second planet of the Mataras (later named Pact Worlds) system: Castrovel, where they lives mostly on their own on the continent of Sovyrian, content to mostly ignore the continuous wars between their neighbors, the formians and lashunta. However, with the help of the aiudara, or “elf-gates”, they traveled between planets, including Golarion and beyond, though the art of creating these gates was lost to the Age of Darkness of Golarion, when most of elf-kind abandoned Golarion for Castrovel when the disaster of Earthfall came.
The fact that there were those that did not led to many social divisions in elven society back then, with mainline elven culture being distrustful of other species bordering on xenophobic, the dark elves (or I suppose cavern elves now) being transformed by the underground, and of course, the elves that chose to remain behind being referred to by other elves as Forlorn due to being surrounded by death constantly due to outlasting the shorter-lived friends they choose, a term which is tinged with pity and contempt.
In the far-future of Starfinder, not much has changed. Mainline elven culture believes they have found evidence that they were betrayed during The Gap by one of the shorter-lived peoples, driving them to become insular and xenophobic after that great universal fugue ended, even bringing back the tradition of wearing masks around non-elves (to absorb the taint and shame of dealing with outsiders). However, the Forlorn still exist as well, written off as dead by their kin for choosing friendship with the wondrously varied and diverse people of the galaxy.
Elf-kind is not entirely without reason for their insular behavior in the post-Gap world, since, as a slow to change long-lived people, they were also slow to recover from the confusion left in it’s wake. Imagine exiting a fugue to find that one of your major cities and aiudara hubs was under the control of a dragon despot who charges exorbitant prices to use them, for example! Even still, even if they don’t know who exactly betrayed them, their attitude towards other species is backwards and toxic, as if their own people can do no wrong while the shorter-lived species are the root of their problems.
The elves themselves are somewhat human-like in appearance, being like tall and slender humans that move with exceptional grace, however, their ears are long and pointed, and their eyes are very different structurally, being almost entirely consumed by the iris similar to the eyes of deer or other prey animals. However, elves are surprisingly adaptive in their appearance as well, with their bodies slowly changing and adapting to whatever environment they live in. While this process is slow, an elf from a jungle world may shift away from browns, greens, and other colors in terms of hair, skin, and eye color to pale blue and white if they live near the artic circle of a world for several decades. Additionally, elves age much slower than most other species, and live much longer, which often alienates them from other species simply because they have less need to emotionally mature at the same rate as other species, leading them to wrongly consider the adults of other species as children despite the breadth of their experiences being nothing to sneeze at.
Despite their distrust of other species, the elves are not inherently bad, and do tend to value the same common good as most others. They do, however, tend to take the long view of things, willing to wait out problems that others would expect immediate responses to. However, when they are roused to action, their action tends to be decisive and precise, demonstrating an aptitude for planning and much consideration.
The elves do show a great appreciation for both the natural world and for magic, and tend to favor spellcraft over technological advancement in most things, though naturally there are exceptions. Where they don’t show exception is in incorporating their advancements with nature, being low-impact creations that do no harm to the environment and may in fact be biotech in nature.
As stated before, elves tend to be xenophobic, but the existence of the Forlorn is proof that this isn’t set in stone. Plenty of elves can grow to appreciate the unique perspectives and companionship of other species, and while they may be slow to trust, they will fight fiercely for those who they’ve bonded with.
Elves are typically agile and clever, but a bit frail.
They also sport enhanced resistance to spells that attack their mind, and are completely immune to magically compelled sleep.
Conversely, they have a particular aptitude for piercing magical resistance, as well as a knack for learning and understanding magic as a whole.
They also demonstrate keenly honed senses, picking up small details, and their eyes function well in low light.
Of course, some elves are built differently, and oftentimes Forlorn elves prove to be agile, but more amiable to others, though they lack some of the discretion of other elves.
Going further, plenty of elves have developed other traits, true to their adaptive nature. Those elves that were raised on the contienent of Asana tend to develop the telepathic abilities of their lashunta neighbors, for example. Others that have dwelled underground or lived nocturnal lifestyles develop even more keen night-eyes, while those who have become fixated on the supposed betrayal during the Gap sometimes become so distrustful that even illusions have a hard time fooling them. Some among the Forlorn develop a knack for bonding with others, and even turn their innate magic towards crossing language barriers. Some who were alive during the Gap have struggled with their clouded memories long enough that their minds become naturally resistant to all effects. Finally, some spend so much time away from civilization that they demonstrate superior survival skills.
With their agility, elves lend themselves well to operatives and precogs, as well as range-focused soldiers and nanocytes, the latter of whom might decide to become more one with nature or to become a being of wild magic. Heck, the tradition of elves using bows as weapons might be a good reason to try out a bow build with microserrated and grenade arrows. Of course, that isn’t to say that elves can’t do melee, though their low constitution makes it less appealing, especially if you’re considering the vanguard. However, their intelligence also makes mechanic and technomancer quite viable options, though perhaps more the technomancer side of things unless you give the character reason to eschew magic in favor of pure tech. On that note, they also make good studious biohackers as well. Their focus on magic also makes mystic and witchwarper good choices, though the latter benefits more if you use the forlorn variant stat array, as does envoy for obvious reasons. Again, their only real weakness is their con penalty, but they can easily get around that with some work.
That will do for today, but we have plenty more species to look at this week!

I checked the blog and it didn’t seem like I ever posted the products of me going insane and learning how to use Gplates so here’s the maps + plate movements across the most recent several hundred million years for tidally locked double planets Falluna and Earthfall
They orbit each other as they orbit their star; they’re tidally locked to each other (the same side of the planets always face each other) but not to their star. The “Dark” side of the planets only ever get indirect sunlight due to the partner planet eclipsing the sun on that side every day, and is therefore much cooler than the “light” side. Falluna has most of its ocean on the comparatively warm “light” side, and ocean currents carry the warmth and moisture towards the “dark” side, causing a warm and wet climate compared to Earthfall. Earthfall, on the other hand, has most of its ocean on the colder “dark” side. The cold ocean doesn’t bring much moisture with it, causing the overall climate to be drier, with only the rapidly closing central sea keeping the inner continent from turning into a complete desert. Earthfall’s landmass also has a more extreme temperature difference between night and day.
Earthfall has a bigger population due to the comparative ease of landing due to most of its landmass being on the “light” side, unobstructed by its partner planet. Falluna does have a steady population, but it’s much more rural and spread out.
“Why these two planets” you ask. Well. I had brainworms. I hope to regain these brainworms some day, because chasing them was fun

I'm going to explain real quick. You see, when I beat guest star as Magolor, on Planet Earthfall I found that friend key(is that what it's called? Idk, that thing, that lets you summon dream friends) and as my dream friend I chose Marx, because I can't get enough of them. And of course the first thing I thought of, is make them kiss. And now I just call Planet Earthfall's theme the Marxolor theme... Yeah, I am wierd...

Gentle Angel — Metagala Oneshot
Tumblr media
The air was cool and breezy, typical of winter in southwestern Dreamland. A large group of people were gathered around a giant Christmas tree, right in the center of the Cappy Village plaza. There were Waddle Dees, Cappies, and friends from many different planets, ranging from Earthfall to Halcandra — his royal majesty King Dedede was there as well, along with his subordinates.
Hundreds of gifts were stacked up around the tree’s base, lit up with shimmering glittery ornaments and bright Christmas lights and other such decorations. The atmosphere was full of joy, happiness, and Christmas cheer.
Before they knew it, it was time to open all the gifts. Everyone got what was gifted to them; toys, tools, clothes, snacks, among many other things. Kirby could barely hold himself together. He loved getting gifts from his friends and family, especially from Meta Knight and Galacta Knight, and this year, they got a bunch for him!
As the others had finished opening their presents, the only ones left were for those living at Castle Dedede. Fumu and Bun went to grab theirs, Kirby got his, Meta and Galacta gave their gifts to each other, and Dedede decided he would open his last. For the moment, he sat back and simply watched the villagers enjoy their Christmas afternoon. Bandana Dee stood by his side, and conversed with him casually.
Fumu got art supplies for the most part, as well as a calligraphy set, and various other things. But got an electric guitar, an amplifier, a skateboard, and many other little trinkets. They loved their gifts from the bottom of their hearts. They thanked the givers, and continued on doing their own things, conversing with friends, and using their new items.
Kirby opened his gifts quickly. One of his favourite things about Christmas was ripping off the wrapping paper and unboxing his presents. He absolutely adored surprises. The first two gifts was from Fumu — she got them a large tin of butter cookies, and a hand-sewn sweater. They put it on immediately, thanking her profusely. The next two were from Bun — he got them a ton of candy from the local sweets shop, and a duo set of action figures so they could play together. They thanked him, hugging him, and even gave some of his snacks to him!
From Dedede, he got food and toys. From Bandana Dee, he got food, toys, and a spear. From Hano, he got food, toys, art supplies, and a full set of armour! From Meta Knight, he got food, toys, custom hand-made clothes, and a pastel-pink-and-gold sword! From Galacta Knight, he got food, an old white-and-gold Dimensional Cape (that Galacta apparently used to own himself), and an alarming amount of weapons, ranging from simple hammers to actual firearms. Meta Knight was… very concerned, to say the least.
Now it was time for Meta and Galacta to open their gifts to each other. It took a bit of convincing, but Meta eventually decided to open his first. “Go on, open ‘em up, Candy!” Galacta said, seeming impatient. Meta chuckled at his behaviour, and opened the first gift. It was a golden chain necklace with multicoloured gems, jewels, and crystals attached to it. “Wow. This is… gorgeous. Where did you get this?” he asked, holding the jewelry in his clawed hands. “Used to be mine,” Galacta responded with a bright smile. “It doesn’t really fit my style anymore, and I figured you’d like it, so I gave it to you. Same for this one.” He handed Meta another present. It was smaller in size. He opened it carefully, making sure not to tear the black-and-gold wrapping paper. It was a bracelet of similar composition.
“They used to go together,” Galacta said, gently taking hold of Meta’s hand. “Put them on. They’d look good on ya.” His expression was soft and full of love. He honestly couldn’t remember the last time he was this happy; it must’ve been eons ago.
Meta did as his lover requested, and put on the golden jewelry. He was very correct, it seems — he looked absolutely stunning. Galacta’s smile only grew wider. “I was right,” he said. “Fits you better than they did me.” Meta shook his head. “They’d look just as wonderful on you, Angel,” he said before picking up the last gift Galacta got him. It was a great bit larger than the others. “Goodness, that is quite a size difference.”
“That’s what—“
“Hush.”
Meta crouched down and laid the gift horizontally on the ground, gently peeling off the tape that held the paper together. After removing the wrapping paper, he opened the box in which he presumed the gift was contained. He used his claw to slice through the tape, and unfolded the cardboard flaps, pulling out the present.
It was a guitar case.
“Woah.”
Galacta smiled wider.
“You— no way. You got me— you— Angel, you got me a new guitar?” Meta said, genuinely surprised. Galacta nodded. “Yep,” he said. “Had enough extra cash to buy it for ya. I also made you a custom pick, I put it in one of the pockets.” Meta stood up and pulled Galacta into a hug. “Thank you so much Angel! God, I’ve been wanting one of these, but I don’t get paid enough to fund both my caffeine addiction and a guitar… thank you so much, again!” Galacta hugged him back. “No problem, Candy.”
Meta pulled away. “Now it’s time for you to open your presents, doll.” Galacta turned his head, flustered by the nickname. “‘Doll’?” he echoed. Had he not had any fur, his blush would’ve been very visible. “What, do you not like it?” Meta asked. “I won’t call you that if it makes you uncomfortable—“
Galacta interrupted him before he could finish his nervous rambles. “No, it’s fine. I just didn’t expect that. You can keep calling me ‘doll’. It’s sweet,” he said, grinning happily. “Anyway, the gifts. Which one first?”
“I don’t mind,” Meta responded, pulling his coat up on his face a bit higher in order to warm up. “Any one you want.” Galacta shrugged and turned to the three gift boxes. He decided to open the largest one first.
He pulled the box out from underneath the other two. It was rectangular in shape, wrapped in red wrapping paper highlighted with gold and silver. A multicoloured gold-and-black bow was stuck on the top left corner. Galacta pulled it off, looking at it for a few moments before sticking it on Meta’s exposed forehead. “Oh my god, best gift ever! A hot boyfriend!” he joked, and Meta laughed in response. “You’re such a dork,” he said through chuckles. “No you,” Galacta responded with a smile before turning back to the present.
He kneeled down, and adjusted the gift’s position so that it was upright. He haphazardly pulled the tape off, accidentally ripping the paper in the process, but he didn’t necessarily care. He continued opening the gift until the box was revealed. It was platinum white, with a few hand-painted designs of the front, seeming to resemble snowflakes and stars. There was some text too, and to his surprise, Galacta could actually read it. It was written in the standard Galactic alphabet.
“Merry Christmas, my Angel. I love you,” it read, in shockingly neat handwriting.
“Candy, did you write that?” he asked. Meta nodded. “Yep. My Mama taught me how to write in standard Galactic.” Galacta looked back and forth between Meta and the gift box with a huge, dopey smile on his face. “Oh my lord, I love you so much.”
After a moment, he cut through the tape with his claw and opened the box, revealing… fabric?
It seemed to be some sort of clothing, mostly black with silver and golden stitching. He lifted the cloth and unfolded it, revealing it to be a jacket. It was lined with silky gold on the edges, with embroidered stars falling from the shoulder seam in shades of gold and silver. The buttons mimicked each phase of the moon. “Oh, this is so cool,” Galacta said, admiring the work. “I made it myself,” Meta spoke up. “All hand-sewn. I also made the buttons.” Galacta looked at him, eyes shimmering. “You made all of this by yourself? Candy. Oh my lord, you are the best.”
Meta smiled. “There’s more, Angel,” he said, gesturing to the now opened box which still had items inside. Galacta looked back at it, folding the jacket and setting it onto the box Meta’s guitar came in. He took the next item, letting it fall unfolded.
It was a long lace-sleeved turtleneck shirt, completely black aside from embroidered silver-and-gold stars and roses, as well as a bleach-painted drawing of a full moon on the front, and a new moon painted on the back. Galacta was awestruck, and his jaw dropped in amazement. He whispered something in a different language, presumably Galactic, before speaking directly to Meta. “Candy, this is incredible. Did you make this too?” he asked, still admiring the artistry. “Mhmm. All of these gifts are hand-made by me. It’s Draconic tradition — giving loved ones presents made by hand. I’m sure you’re aware.”
Galacta chuckled, completely at a loss for words. Meta knew full well that he loved it — he didn’t even need to say anything much. His expressions told him everything.
He set down the shirt on top of his jacket and pulled out the last thing from the box. It was a pair of pants, composed similarly to the jacket. The cuffs and waistline had silky gold lining, and stars and roses were embroidered, falling from the waistline and growing from the cuffs. The midnight black fabric was soft and warm, perfect for the winters of Dreamland. “Awesome,” he said, standing up and twisting the pants around in his grasp, studying the back, which perfectly mirrored the front, save for two roses embroidered in gold on the back pockets.
He folded the item back up and set it down with the rest of the outfit, then hugging Meta. “Thank you, Candy. This means a lot.” He hugged him back, kissing his cheek before responding. “You’re welcome, Angel. Remember, though, you still have two more gifts.” Galacta suddenly pulled away. “Oh, right!” he exclaimed, walking back to the two remaining boxes. He went straight for the second largest, moving the small box off of its top. He sliced through the top of the wrapping paper with his claw, no longer caring if he ripped it or not. It didn’t really matter, anyway.
He opened the box containing the gift, and found various different accessories. 10 bracelets, 10 necklaces, 4 belts, 10 sets of earrings, 15 keychains… multiple little additions to his outfits. “Oh. My. Lord. Candy, you have outdone yourself completely,” he said, lifting a couple bracelets out of the box and putting them on. “You made all of these completely by yourself? You’re crazy, babe.” “No, not completely on my own,” Meta said, folding his arms inside his coat. “Mama helped me out. She is the blacksmith, after all.” Galacta hummed and nodded. “Ah, alright. Now it’s time for the last one… this tiny li’l’ thing.” He picked up the final, smaller box. It fit perfectly in his hand. He turned it around slightly, looking at the bottom so he could pull the tape away, revealing the present.
It was a black velvet box, with a golden rose on the lid. “Oh.” Galacta moved to hold it in both hands. “That’s a bit… underwhelming. It’s pretty, though.” Meta shook his head. “No, no, look inside,” he spoke with a light chuckle. The warrior looked back at the small box, contemplating for a second, and attempted to open it.
It didn’t budge.
“Uh.” He tried again. Still, it didn’t open. “Candy, it’s not opening.”
Meta sighed quietly, ending it in a soft giggle. “Hold on, give it to me,” he said, walking up to him and reaching out to take the box. Galacta reluctantly handed it over, and Meta positioned his hands so that his right was holding the bottom of the box, and his left was pinching the lid between his index and thumb. “You have to squeeze the sides, like this,” he explained kindly, doing as he instructed.
He opened the box slowly, and seemingly out of nowhere, he crouched down.
“Huh?”
The small box opened to reveal a velvety red inside, with something small and shiny placed carefully in the center.
It was a ring.
The body of it was silver and braided, with small diamonds adorning it. On the very top was a small, purple-black stone of obsidian.
Galacta was speechless.
All surrounding citizens went silent
“Galacta Knight,” Meta began.
“You have been here on Popstar for over a year. For eight months, we have been together, as romantic partners. It hasn’t been exactly long, but still — every time I see you, I fall more in love with you. You, my gentle angel, mean the world to me — no, the entire galaxy. I love you more than the night sky, a blue moon, the dawn sunrise. I love you more than anything. Therefore, I ask you…
Will you be mine, by my side, for the rest of eternity in marriage?”
Galacta didn’t say anything for a while. He was surprised. He did not expect this in the slightest. A proposal? This was the last thing he expected from today. In fact, he never thought he’d ever marry again! He figured that, even after the crystallization wore off, he would never even find someone to love him.
And yet, here he was, standing in front of a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, with his lover of eight months crouched down in front of him, ring box in his hand.
In truth, it took him a bit to properly register what was happening. But even when he finally did, he could only say one word.
“Yes.”
Applause and cheers erupted from the crowd, and Meta stood, letting Galacta fall into his embrace. He couldn’t remember the last time he was happy; it was likely before his crystallization. He didn’t want to let go, but he did, so his love could put the ring on his finger.
It was a perfect fit, and it looked absolutely wonderful with the rest of his outfit.
The two went right back into each other’s arms, and the surrounding citizens clapped and shouted, congratulating the soon-to-be married couple.
Kirby, Fumu, Bun, Memu, Parm, Bandana Dee, all of the Halberd crew, and even King Dedede himself were clapping up a storm. Everyone was cheering for the couple as the sun slowly began to set, making a truly beautiful scene.
This was truly the best Christmas of all.

A Plethora of Apocalypses
Setting Concepts and Conceits
Table-top fantasy games tend toward the post-apocalyptic, with themes of exploring the ruins of ancient and powerful civilizations.  With this plane-hopping / astral-sailing game, I wanted to keep the action in the stars and leaned farther into the destruction, leaving most of the mortal worlds in the midst or near-aftermath of their various cataclysms.  The value isn’t from sifting through the radioactive ruins of your home-world, it’s from seeking new worlds and the opportunity that freedom brings.
After polling my players about what they would like to see in a game, I jotted down some quick notes that would become the skeleton of the campaign.  The core concept had to do with certain common tropes I saw in various published settings.
I would use a combination of settings and characters from both gaming and literary settings, to save on effort and give the players a sense of the familiar (albeit in a twisted fairy-tale way).
Most “prime” worlds have been wrecked by cataclysms, almost universally involving magical rocks falling out of the sky.   The destruction is generally far beyond what occurred in the equivalent published setting, with planets shattered into floating continents or lands left largely uninhabitable. (Krynn’s “burning mountain”, Golarion’s “Earthfall”, Warhammer’s “Great Catastrophe”)
These events altered or increased how magic in these places worked, creating mutants, uplifting animals ,unleashing demons, aliens, etc.  Lots of “green rocks” type tropes, powering some of the more fantastical elements or every-day magic so the setting isn’t as reliant on spell-casters. (Warpstone, Ghost Rock, Cinnabryl/Vermeil, Faerzress, etc.)
Inhabitants of these places often gained powers or new abilities and are commonly marked in some way by tattoo or brand-like alterations to the skin.  Some of these patterns are not random, and under the right circumstances could be combined to unlock secrets, form maps to treasures, and reveal lost knowledge. (Savage Coast Legacies, Cerilia’s Blood Powers, Athas’ Wild Talents, and particularly Eberron’s Dragonmarks).
--
So (most) worlds experiences some sort of magical catastrophe that left them in ruins.  These are all related to some kind of (yet unknown) triggering event.  And the physical marks on some of the affected inhabitants may hold a clue to exactly what happened.
By starting with the idea that I’ll have warped and twisted versions of “canon” characters and settings, I free myself from the mental hobgoblins of continuity and lore-accuracy, which is a great help to both myself and my players.  It’s also my standing excuse for any cheesiness that may occur in posts on this blog.
Due to all of my players having some sort of anthropomorphic animal species (Tortle, Dragonborn, and ferret-folk), I started out designing a version of the Red Steel setting’s Savage Coast, with the coast being part of floating islands that were the remains of a shattered Mystara.
