Q: If all Buddhas attain enlightenment in Bodhgaya, does it mean that great practitioners like Milarepa would also have to arrive at Bodhgaya in order to complete their path?
Rinpoche says there are two types of Buddhas. External Buddha and internal Buddha. The external Buddhas are like Buddha Shakyamuni who is a Buddha and performs the activities of enlightenment like Buddha's twelve major activities. But the internal Buddhas are like Milarepa who have attained enlightenment inside but remain as ordinary being in the presence of disciples and does not necessarily perform the activities of a Buddha in public.
The external Buddhas, all without exception, would physically come to Bodhgaya and they would attain enlightenment while sitting under the Bodhi tree. However, not all internal Buddhas would come to Bodhgaya for enlightenment. Most of them would reveal their own ultimate Bodhgaya which is their Buddha-nature in their mind and thereby they would attain enlightenment. For such internal Buddhas, Buddha-nature is the Bodhgaya and the Bodhi tree is the central channel for them.
However whether we are destined to be external Buddha or internal Buddha, to come to this holy place like Bodhgaya and receive the blessing of it, practice dharma and do meditation here, the merits would be multiplied compared to doing these in any other places on this earth.
Therefore, we should not waste our opportunity to practice diligently while we are here in Bodhgaya.
And also because of the limitless blessing of this holy place, if you come here with a very good motivation of practising dharma and visit your Gurus, any act that you commit during your journey to here such as booking for flight, boarding, landing, renting a taxi, checking in a hotel and so on, all these actions would become virtuous actions and you would achieve inconceivable merits.

More by Accident than Design
Today, we know that Buddha was born in the Himalayas in present-day Nepal, then spent his life wandering through the region of northern India that lies to the south of Nepal. Yet, three hundred years ago, after seven hundred years of Muslim rule, India had all but forgotten about the Buddha. Until, that is, a few eccentric British colonizers and tea estate managers fell under India’s spell and became fascinated by its native languages and culture.
In the course of their Sanskrit studies, they stumbled across the teachings of the Buddha. A British Army officer called Alexander Cunningham famously rediscovered Bodhgaya. Thanks to him, we can now visit the exact spot of the Buddha’s enlightenment.
Throughout the nineteenth century, European interest in the Buddha grew as reports of new discoveries in India became available. The first general historical account of Indian Buddhism, Introduction à l’histoire du Bouddhisme indien, was published in 1844 by French scholar Eugène Burnouf.
The German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer famously described Buddhism as the “best of all possible religions” and even Friedrich Nietzsche became interested in Buddhism, albeit for all the wrong reasons. Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, wrote:
I have visited the holy places of Buddhism in India and was profoundly impressed by them, quite apart from my reading of Buddhist literature. If I were an Indian, I would definitely be a Buddhist. But in the West, we have different presuppositions.
Migration also played a major part in the spread of Buddhism throughout the nineteenth century. In the 1840s, Chinese Buddhists began emigrating to America; in the 1870s they were the first to take Buddhism to Australia. In the 1950s, Vietnamese refugees fled to America where they set up the first Buddhist institutions in the West.
By the time the Tibetans were relocating to India in the 1960s, Buddhism had begun to attract a great deal of attention, thanks in no small part to the hippies, the ‘hippy trail’, weed (ganj), the Beat Generation, the Beatles, transcendental meditation and the Vietnam war.
For centuries, Christian missionaries travelled to the East to spread the gospel and convert the natives. Asians have therefore never had to seek out the Christian teachings. For westerners it was the other way around. I have heard some very touching stories about the higgledy-piggledy routes Buddhism took to the UK, America and Europe – especially about the hippies who followed The Beatles to India, accidentally bumped into Buddhism, tuned into transcendental meditation and took up yoga. But few of those who took an interest in Buddhism at that time were specifically seeking enlightenment and so they did almost no research or fact-checking. All of which made Buddhadharma’s centuries-long journey to the West haphazard, at best.
Yet, in spite of its chaotic introduction, the results of having the Buddhist teachings in Europe, America and Australia have generally been good. The only real drawback is that quite a number of new Buddhists have been left with some quite hard-to-shake misconceptions and deeply rooted habitual patterns.

Buddhist Pilgrimage
Bodhgaya is one of the most important and highly respected Buddhist pilgrimage places on the planet. Here, under the banyan tree known as the Bodhi Tree, Gautama became enlightened and became the Buddha. At Kushinagar, which is 55 kilometers from Gorakhpur, the Lord Buddha spoke his final words, "Look now, brethren, I urge you, saying, decay is inherent in all component things!" He then said, "With diligence, work out your salvation," and left for heaven. The solemn dying is seen by the Mahaparinirvana temple, which is dedicated to the event. One among the numerous stupas in Kushinagar is the Rambhar Stupa, which is supposedly the location of Lord Buddha's cremation. You should look into it.

Best IRCTC Religious tourism packages in India
The diversity of people from various religions makes India a ‘land of faith.’ Wherever you travel an essence of spirituality, dharma will greet you. Hindus make up close to 80 percent of the total population and thus the Hindu festivals are celebrated with great zeal and exuberance. One of the most sacred Hindu festivals celebrated in India is the Shri Jagannath Yatra. Also popular as the Rath Yatra or Chariot Festival, it is one of the most ancient and popular Hindu festivals in India. It is celebrated every year with great fervour in the coastal city of Puri in the eastern state of Odisha, the home of Lord Jagannath. The festival commemorates the journey of Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, and his younger sister Goddess Subhadra from their temple to their aunt’s temple, Gundicha Mandir, about 3 km away. The festival is a symbol of the love and bond between the divine siblings and their devotees.
Apart from Odisha, The Jagannath festival is also celebrated in Ahmedabad with great warmth and zeal. It is considered as the second-largest congregation for the festival in the country after Odisha. IRCTC is running dedicated trains to Puri to facilitate people visiting the state.
PURI GANGASAGAR WITH BAIDYANATH AND GAYA DARSHAN (WZBGI10).
The 8 Nights & 9 Days package starts at an economical price of 14950, which covers destinations like:
Puri: Jagannath Puri Temple, Konark Temple, Lingaraj Temple
Kolkata: Kali Mata Temple & Ganga Sagar
Jasidih: Baba Baidyanath dham Jyotirlinga Temple
Gaya: Vishnupad Temple and Bodhgaya
This train is a good option to travel to Puri to witness Shri Jagannath Yatra.
Similarly, the GARVI GUJARAT (CDBG09) is a Deluxe AC tourist train, covering prominent religious and heritage tourist sites including the Statue of Unity in Gujarat. This tour will showcase three significant temples of Gujarat i.e. Somnath, Nageshwar Jyotirling, and Dwarkadhish temple.
Religious tourism is a great stress buster and a way to find oneself. In India, most states have their own religious hotspot. South India is a hub of religious centers along with being a most-favoured tourist destination. A great option to travel to Shri Rameshwaram Mallikarjun Dakshin Bharat Yatra is DAKSHIN BHARAT DARSHAN BY BHARAT GAURAV TOURIST TRAIN. IRCTC offers an 11 Nights/12 Days package that covers destinations like KANYAKUMARI / MEENAKSHI TEMPLE / RAMESWARAM / TIRUPATI / TRIVANDRUM starting at 21,300 per person.
Jyotirlingas are highly revered by followers of the Hindu religion. IRCTC has come up with Jyotirlinga Bhakti Yatra to make such religious pursuits easy. IRCTC Tourism’s Bharat Gaurav Jyotirlinga Yatra train’s journey starts from Kolkata, travels through Ujjain- Statue of Unity- Somnath Jyotirlinga- Dwarka- Shirdi- Trimbakeshwar and reaches back to Kolkata. The package starts at an economical price of 20,060 per person. There are various special trains that have itineraries planned to suit the requirements of religious tourism.
Witnessing the Shri Jagannath Yatra, where idols are brought out of the temple and taken through huge chariots to her aunt's place with resonating sounds of drums, conch shells, and bells accompanied by thousands of people from all around the globe, pulling the chariots is awe-inspiring. Log on to www.irctctourism.com to know more about the packages and details. It’s easier with the IRCTC mobile application.

The Quest for Buddhism (73)
The Turning of the Wheel of Dhamma (Skt. Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta)
The Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, also known as the Turning of the Wheel of Dhamma, is a Buddhist scripture that Buddhists regard as a record of the first teachings given by the Buddha after he attained full enlightenment.
The subject matter of this sutra is the Four Noble Truths, which are the basic directions of Buddhism, stated in formal terms. The sutra also contains references to concepts in Buddhism such as the Middle Way, impermanence and karma.
[Background]
It is said that the Buddha, shortly after his attainment of Buddhahood, initially hesitated to preach his teachings, as it was extremely difficult to explain the Buddha Dharma and even if he taught them to sentient beings, they would not understand them and it would be a waste of time and effort.
Persuaded by Brahma, the protector of Buddhism, deciding to teach, the Buddha initially intended to visit his former teachers, Ajara Kalama and Uddaka Ramaputta, to teach them his insights, but they had already died and reborn in a place where it is not apt to preach or they were deaf, so he decided to visit his five former companions.
The Buddha then journeyed from Bodhgaya to Sarnath, there he met his five former companions, the ascetics with whom he had shared six years of hardship. His former companions were at first suspicious of the Buddha, but upon seeing the radiance of the Buddha, they requested him to teach what he had learned.
Thereupon the Buddha gave the teaching that was later recorded as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, which introduces fundamental concepts of Buddhist thought, such as the Middle Way and the Four Noble Truths.
The sutra contains the following topics:
The two extremes to be avoided (sensual indulgence and self-mortification)
The Middle Way: The Noble Eightfold Path
The Four Noble Truths
The Twelve Insights of the Four Noble Truths
Proclamation of release from the cycle of rebirth (commonly referred to as nibbana)
The Opening of the Dhamma Eye (the attainment of right view)
Proclamation of the devas upon the setting of the Wheel of Dhamma in motion by the Buddha
Response of the Buddha to Aññā Kondañña's comprehension of his teachings
Tumblr media
[Photo above: Dhamek Stupa is a massive stupa located at Sarnath, 13 km away from Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It marked the spot where the Buddha gave the first sermon to his first five disciples, after attaining enlightenment, "revealing his Eightfold Path leading to nirvana".]
