Types of UK student discount cards and online codes

August 2017 saw plenty of restaurant openings, including tons of pizza (1000 Degrees Neapolitan, Blaze, Unchained, Oath Craft, Sweet Tomatoes), a number of out-of-town chains (those first two pizza spots, plus Caffe Nero, Wagamama, and more), a variety of cafes and other all-day dining options, and more.

On the closure side, it was a quiet month, but a few longtime spots did say goodbye, including Jamaica Plain dive bar Drinking Fountain and the Fireplace in Brookline. Fort Point’s popular Tavern Road, which opened four years ago, also closed in August.

Drinking Fountain (3250 Washington St., Jamaica Plain, Boston): This classic dive bar first opened in the 1940s and had been under the same ownership since 1977.

The Fireplace (1634 Beacon St., Washington Square, Brookline): After a false alarm a few years back, the Fireplace closed in August after a 16-year run; the space will reportedly become a Mediterranean seafood restaurant.

Haru (55 Huntington Ave., Back Bay, Boston): This New York-based sushi restaurant closed its only Boston location in August; six New York locations remain.

Lanes & Games (195 Concord Tpke., Cambridge): This bowling alley, restaurant, and bar said goodbye in August after decades in business; it’ll be replaced by an apartment building.

Triple fff Brewing Company

This year, the Triple fff brewery celebrates its 20-year anniversary. All their regular ales have won major CAMRA awards at the Great British Beer Festival, the pinnacle of which was Supreme Champion Beer of Britain in 2008, “Alton’s Pride”.

Being situated 350 yards from the Four Marks steam railway station on the Watercress Line provides a great way to get to the brewery’s popular shop while seeing the beautiful Hampshire countryside. There’s an open day every August where visitors can enjoy a lazy day drinking ales and listening to live music while learning how the brewery makes its award-winning ales.

Surrey Hills Brewery

Home of the famous Shere Drop, the independently owned Surrey Hills Brewery opened in 2005. Located on the Denbies Wine Estate, the Brewery is in the heart of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the foot of Box Hill. The brewery shop is open Monday to Saturday where you can purchase fresh draught beer to drink in and even to take away.

Yeovil Ales Brewery

Yeovil Ales is a family-run brewery which was founded in October 2005 by Rob and Dave Sherwood. Their passion for quality, service and developing innovative new brews has led to a host of local and national awards.

Their range now stands at seven permanent real ales and a growing number of occasional and seasonal brews. They sell their beer in casks to the trade, and to the public in a variety of sizes, which can be bought direct in person or via their online shop. They also offer home delivery across the UK.

Anspach & Hobday Brewery

Founded in 2014 by Paul Anspach and Jack Hobday, Anspach & Hobday is a contemporary microbrewery located in a railway arch in Bermondsey, London. They brew a wide variety of beers, ranging from classic London porters and stouts, to innovative styles such as fruit-infused sour beers and barrel-aged saisons. Every weekend the brewery tap room opens, and customers are able to try up to nine brewery-fresh beers in the very location that they’re brewed.

Shepherd Neame Ltd

In the heart of hop-growing country, Shepherd Neame’s award-winning guided tour takes visitors around the home of Britain’s oldest brewer to see how beer is made at its traditional home. It’s a sensory experience offering touch, taste and smell and includes a visit to the Old Brewery Store, featuring displays of historic delivery vehicles and a collection of hop picking and brewing memorabilia. It ends with a tutored tasting of their traditional Kentish ales and speciality lagers.

Arbor Ales

Now in their 11th year, Arbor Ales have been at the heart of Bristol’s thriving craft beer scene since 2007. Their focus has always been making drinkable and flavoursome beers of all kinds. To date, they’ve created over 300 different brews (of which several have become successful regulars) and “too many one-offs to remember”. Their flagship favourite is Yakima Valley, an American IPA, while among their more unusual brews is “Breakfast Stout”; a coffee, chocolate and oatmeal concoction.

The month in openings, closings, top news, and more

August 2017 saw plenty of restaurant openings, including tons of pizza (1000 Degrees Neapolitan, Blaze, Unchained, Oath Craft, Sweet Tomatoes), a number of out-of-town chains (those first two pizza spots, plus Caffe Nero, Wagamama, and more), a variety of cafes and other all-day dining options, and more.

On the closure side, it was a quiet month, but a few longtime spots did say goodbye, including Jamaica Plain dive bar Drinking Fountain and the Fireplace in Brookline. Fort Point’s popular Tavern Road, which opened four years ago, also closed in August.

Dot 2 Dot Cafe (1739 Dorchester Ave., Dorchester, Boston): This cafe opened in 2008, serving breakfast and lunch as well as hosting live music and other events.

Drinking Fountain (3250 Washington St., Jamaica Plain, Boston): This classic dive bar first opened in the 1940s and had been under the same ownership since 1977.

The Fireplace (1634 Beacon St., Washington Square, Brookline): After a false alarm a few years back, the Fireplace closed in August after a 16-year run; the space will reportedly become a Mediterranean seafood restaurant.

Haru (55 Huntington Ave., Back Bay, Boston): This New York-based sushi restaurant closed its only Boston location in August; six New York locations remain.

Lanes & Games (195 Concord Tpke., Cambridge): This bowling alley, restaurant, and bar said goodbye in August after decades in business; it’ll be replaced by an apartment building.

The Playwright (658 E. Broadway, South Boston): This popular Southie bar closed after 17 years, but it is expected to reopen with a new name and renovated space soon.

Spotlight Tavern (208 Rantoul St., Beverly): This North Shore restaurant and music venue closed suddenly in August.

Tavern in the Square (1815 Massachusetts Ave., Porter Square, Cambridge; 730 Massachusetts Ave., Central Square, Cambridge): Both Cambridge locations of this local pub chain have closed. The Porter Square space will be home to a new Shaking Crab location, while the Central Square one has already reopened as 730 Tavern, Kitchen & Patio.

Tavern Road (343 Congress St., Fort Point, Boston): Brothers Louis and Michael DiBiccari closed their popular four-year-old restaurant and bar in August.
