The sun would soon rise up over the hill. 

It’ll creep over the dewy morning grass, first awaking the insects. The squirrels, and other critters would soon come out, eager for the day ahead. It was said to be perfect weather this afternoon, a breezy 75°F with a clear azure sky. 

For now though, darkness engulfed your shared bedroom like a blanket. You sat at the edge of the bed, gripping onto the bedding. The shadowy corners only grew deeper the longer you stared at them. You imagined black inky hands reaching out, dripping with tar. Coming up over the duvet, to crawl over your body. Their long fingers dancing over your flesh, dipping into the curves and arches covered by your sleepwear. 

You shut your eyes, grinding down on your teeth. The drumming of your heart deafened the sound of Bob rustling behind you. The bed creaked, as he stuck his arm out and patted at the vacant spot you once occupied. You looked over your shoulder, Bob’s sleepy eyes blinked, straining to see the outline of your figure. 

“You’re awake.” He mumbled, his words coming out slurred and heavy. 

“Sorry” You cleared your throat, turning now to face him. “I woke up, and couldn’t fall back to sleep.” 

He silently nodded, rubbing his eyes. You could see him weigh something on his tongue, a frequent question he already knew the answer to. 

“Nightmare?” He quietly asked. 

You hummed, staring down at your hands. This was an ongoing problem, for most of your life. Something you had learned to live with, of course seeking help along the way. Some weeks it was fine, almost as if the problem wasn’t there at all. Then there were times when it threatened to smother you, like an overbearing mother. 

Bob slowly rose up from the bed, shuffling across the room to the double closet doors. You quietly watched him, pressing your hands together to stop them from shaking. He opened the left side of the closet, sluggishly searching through the stacked plastic drawers that divided your clothes. 

“Honey, what are you doing?” You said, squinting at him. He ignored you, seemingly determined to find whatever he was looking for. 

This went on for a moment, you watching him repeatedly open and close drawers. The only sounds invading the room were now his quiet murmurs and the neighbors dog barking across the street. He made a noise in the back of his throat, as he finally stepped back from the closet. 

Bob approached you, eyes wide awake. He perched on the bed beside you, clutching onto a pink object in his hands. 

“Uh.” He stuttered, looking down. “This should help, maybe.” 

Bob reached out, placing the item in your lap. You picked it up, running your hand over the plush fabric. It was a stuffed animal, in the shape of a plump pink elephant. The toy was bigger than your hands, and soft to the touch. It smelled of lavender, the floral scent comforting the buzz inside your chest. You brushed your thumb over one of its black button eyes, the cool plastic relieving your warm skin. 

“When did you get this?” You asked, looking up at him.

“I just saw it one day.” He explained, shying away from your gaze. “Was shopping, and it was in the window. It um- it was soft and felt nice, s-so I got it.” 

You smiled to yourself at the explanation. It did feel nice, now that it was in your hands. Your fingers sunk into the fuzzy fabric, squeezing the stuffing. 

“I don’t remember the last time I even held one.” You muttered, turning it over. Childhood felt so long ago, and you were never one to reminisce on it. Still, something tugged at the strings of your heart the longer you stared at the plush toy. It threatened to split you open. 

Tears stung the corners of your eyes, and you couldn’t fathom as to why. 

“I have a frog one too.” Bob mentioned. 

You pulled your gaze away from the elephant to glance up at him. 

“Is it also pink?”

He shook his head, chucking to himself. “No, no it’s just green.” 

“Do you want to-

He was already heading towards the closet doors before you could finish. 

You held the elephant against your chest, nails curling into the toy as if it might disappear. The morning sun was beginning to peek through your window, dawn finally breaking over the fence. 

Sleep had escaped you tonight, and you would be left to carry your dead weight around for the remainder of the day. 

The sweet lavender scent wafted into your nose, soothing the erratic thumping of your heartbeat. 

But at least for now, the nightmares were gone.

Wow! After Adele moved into a bland, white, new build home, she spent 4 yrs. transforming it into a riot of vibrant shades with upcycled furniture, vintage buys and stickers. The living room is done with bright yellow pillows and throws, pink walls, and bright lanterns, bunting and parasols on the ceiling.

The house seen from the back garden-  She used brave strikes of bright paint and her upcycling skills over the course of four years in a bid to transform her once ‘boring’ home.

The sitting room is adorned with countless colourful touches, including mini bird houses, lanterns, Russian dolls, and candle holders, while all the upholstery is patterned.

The corner sofa in Adele’s conservatory living-room, piled with floral cushions. Adele explained she saw other people excel at DIY and wanted to give it a whirl.

Adele’s love of color and pattern extends into the kitchen, where even the worktop is covered with floral place mats to brighten it up, and the backsplash is a painted coastal scene.

She decorated her black stairs with colorful DIY bunting, plates and embroideries, as well as a macramé decoration.

The bedroom is only slightly less vibrant than the rest of the house with dark walls and a black bed frame, but a mandala bedspread, a pink chandelier, floral cushions and a parasol descending from the ceiling certainly brighten things up.

 Adele decorated her mantel with bunnies and eggs and bunting for Easter, while an array of straw hats hanging on the wall and colorful candles finish off the look. 

Adele turned her house into a hub of eclectic items from floor to ceiling. The living room is a riot of different shades, with crochet blankets and cushions, colorful baskets, candles, elephants and paper lanterns adding to the carnival feel.

Her love of color  now extends to her garden, where she’s started to decorate with beach-inspired decorations.

Instead of a death game, the Reaper Game throws you into your ideal version of Shibuya. An alternate version of the city that caters to your desires. And the only way out, the only way to win, is the reject it. But who would ever want to wake up from a dream?

Notes: This is an expanded version of a drabble I wrote long ago for an AU that honestly is going nowhere so I just write loosely-connected ficlets for it every now and then. So this one is Shiki’s version. It’s more of a short exploration of the idea than anything else.

Sunlight peeks through the slits of geometric-patterned curtains, and Shiki wakes up to a barely familiar room.

First is the bed. The pillows are all the wrong size and shape — too thick and just an inch too short. The blanket is vibrant floral wool, distracting and full of energy, like it came from the Amazona. Far away from the usual baby blue cotton dotted with tiny elephants that greets Shiki on most mornings.

Around her are magazines of Vogue and Glamour, bookshelves filled with fashion and interior design books — the oversized, hardbound kind you’d expect to see displayed on the coffee table of a salon waiting area.

Instead of her giant sewing machine and rolls of threads and cloths, the study table is littered with reference books, pencils, notebooks and croquis, small little square patches of patterned fabrics. Moodboards haphazardly propped up against the wall, with a sticky note on the corner that says POISE AND COMPOSURE!! and RESEARCH: Chantilly VS Alencon? in all caps. Beside the table is a trash bin filled to the brim with crumpled reject sketches.

Her closet, she finds, is mostly D+B and Dragon Couture. None of the comforting warmth she’s used to seeing in her beloved Natural Puppy and Hip Snake wardrobe. It’s all trendy urban city girl look, the kind that Eri would wear. Exactly what Eri would wear.

“Eri,” she whispers. She knows this room; grew up in it like a second home. She doesn’t remember sleeping over though. Last night… last night they had a fight, and she ran away, and then. And then. “Eri’s room? When did I…?”

“Tsk tsk, wrong question sweetheart,” says an older female voice. Shiki turns her head to see a stranger sitting on her bed, appearing out of nowhere, donned in pink hair and rosy lipstick. The corset around her waist accentuates her body nicely. It’s a good look on her. “You should be asking Shiki that.”

“What?” Shiki’s eyes widen. Oh no. Oh no, oh no, oh no. Then yesterday, all of yesterday wasn’t a dream. The stranger points to the full-length mirror in the corner, next to the naked mannequin that serves as the only familiar artifact in the room. It was a twin set that she split with Eri.

“Oh…” she whispers as she takes in her reflection. Long pink hair, skinny waist. Long fingers made for sketching. Hazel eyes that can cut through your demons. And now that she thinks about it, she can see things clearly now. Perfect 20/20 eyesight from perfectly hazel eyes. It’s horrifying; an alien, foreign reflection she’s not used to seeing from this angle, from anywhere but admiring from afar.

Shiki brings her hand up, caresses her cheek, sees her reflection mirror the same. Foreign hands and foreign skin that looks wrong, wrong, wrong.

Shiki can’t help the upward twitch of her lips.

Even her hand doesn’t lie to her. Her right palm says 6:16:45:32, glaring at her in red and black, counting down second by second with soundless ticking. Shiki swivels back to face the stranger in her bed. “That means you’re…”

“Name’s Uzuki. I’m your designated Reaper for this week.” The stranger spreads her arms and gestures around the room. “Welcome to your ideal Shibuya, Shiki Misaki.”

Shiki’s phone rings before she can react. She answers without thinking, fumbling at the strangeness of her own phone. It’s not hers, but the passcode is the same as her own phone at least. She unlocks it and sees it’s a video call from… her own number?

“Eri!” the screen calls out, projecting her own voice, marred by the static of a faulty internet connection. Then a video appears, a mirror, a version of herself that’s too real and unlike her. Rounded features framed in all too big glasses. Even when the image is fuzzy and blurred, she can recognize her face anywhere. She never did lose all of her baby fat yet. “Hey, you sleepyhead! Are we still up for Sunshine later?”

“Oh, um...” Shiki tries to breathe. In and out, in and out. What would Neku do in this situation? He would probably go along and find reasons why this situation doesn’t make sense, find loopholes and then ruin the whole experience for everyone and the Reaper. He’s logical like that. He would probably curse and call bullshit. Shiki chuckles. In a way, it’s kind of silly. Neku wouldn’t have panicked like she is doing right now. “Um, when are we meeting again?”

Her own face grins at her, happier than she’s ever seen it even from behind a phone screen. Now that Shiki’s more aware of her situation, she can see that even her own phone is a replica of the real Eri’s.

“You stayed up all night drawing your future wedding dress again, didn’t you? No wonder you weren’t up yet. You’re hopeless, Eri.” Eri — the Shiki look-alike, the imposter, the dream — Eri laughs and brings Mr. Mew towards the screen, shaking his stuffed head in mock disappointment. Shiki already misses her old home. “I know you like to take your time getting ready. See you there in two hours?”

“Yeah, I’ll be there,” Shiki promises, the words coming out of her mouth out of habit. They end the call and Shiki falls down to a slump on the floor, still processing what happened.

“Too much?” Uzuki asks, sliding out of the bed and sitting down next to Shiki. “Yeah, the first day is usually the most stressful. You’ll get used to it though, probably faster than you think you would. We give easy missions on Day 1 to compensate, so don’t worry about it.”

“I’m Eri,” Shiki whispers, more to herself than to her companion. “Eri is me and I… I’m Eri.”

“Yeah, isn’t that what you wanted? You can be honest this time, you know.”

Uzuki stands up and gestures around the room. “In this world, it’s your dream. There’s no point to all of this if you don’t get over yourself. Or else I’ll just file in a report for your erasure. Would make things easier on me at least, so better speak up now.”

Shiki licks her lips. Dry, flaky lips that Eri always covers with waxy lip gloss. Skin covered in charcoal smudges than pinpricks. She looks back at the mirror. It’s awful and wrong and unreal. It feels like a trick. It feels amazing.

“Yeah,” she admits. “It’s all I ever dreamed of.”

Summary: Patton gets his fellow Light Sides to make a christmas gift for their new housemate.

“But why?” Roman whined, ignoring the way Logan rolled his eyes as Patton gave him a stern look.

“Now Roman, I know you don’t like Anxiety much, but I won’t stand for anyone here not getting a present on Christmas!”

“However good your intentions may be, I don’t think that Anxiety would necessarily appreciate your efforts, seeing his apparent disdain for the holidays.”

“I understood 80% of that sentence!” Logan’s eyes would get stuck at the back of his head one of these days. “But really, Logan, why not make an effort to make Anxiety feel more included? We don’t even really know him, and he probably moved here for a reason- Maybe he’s another Light Side!”

“Yeah, right, that dreadful- dork looks ready to kill a man and you think he’s a Light Side? He should try lightening up first, if you ask me,” Roman grinned at his joke, to the amusement of no one, except Patton who laughed out of politeness,”Also, his eyeshadow is absolutely garish, you’d think he doesn’t even TRY!” Roman threw an arm against his head as he fell against the logical Side next to him, who only smirked as he let Roman fall to the ground, making no effort to catch him. “TRAITOR!” The prince wailed from the ground, gripping one of Logan’s legs, gesturing dramatically with the other arm. “How could I, the all-beloved, talented, beautiful, charming, favoured Side of all be betrayed like this- by my own brethren no less!”

Before Logan could reply, already moving to pinch his nose, he fell. Roman grabbed the other’s leg, breaking out into thunderous laughter, only getting louder at the logical Side’s disgruntled expression. But his laugh was quickly cut off in favour of high-pitched squeaks, Logan wasting no time at all tickling him into submission, a cruel smile on his face.

“Unprepared for retaliation? A shame, for the prince to go down due to such an easily avoidable error.”

“Hey! Let me- Let go of me, you fiend! I demand to be freed- Patton! Patton, save me! Save me from this vile villain!”

“No- Patton, please-”

High-pitched laughing filled the living room, interrupted by screams. Patton’s smile was absolutely innocent, a stark contrast to Roman’s positively gleeful one. Logan, meanwhile, was crying for help. “Aww, come on Lo, we can stop as soon as you agree to helping us with anxiety’s present!”

“Us?”

“Yeah, of course, or do you not want to help?” Patton smiled, as sweet as a cherub, while Logan yelped on the ground in front of him, and Roman wasn’t frightened, per se, he’s a prince after all, but well- a prince always does good deeds whenever he can!

“No- I can’t wait, Patton, we shall show that Grinch the joys of Christmas! I am already thinking of ideas,” he grinned, conjuring a scroll of parchment and a self-inking quill, writing down the headline- “A Gift For A Grouch”- in pink, glittering, cursive writing.  

Logan relaxed as Patton moved away from him in favour of looking over Roman’s shoulder as the creative Side jotted down ideas, calming his breathing and his nerves. Patton and his incessant tickling, it was humilitaing.

“Hey, Lo, c’mere, look at all of Roman’s ideas!”

“Yes, very fascinating- what would he do with a set of Magic: The gathering cards? He doesn’t have anyone to play with.”

“I was brainstorming, genius,” Roman muttered, striking out the idea. “Besides, I think we all know the obvious winner here-”

“Yeah, the onesie!”

“No- You mean the collection of works by Edgar Allan Poe, correct?”

“No! The make-up set, you fools! He obviously needs it.”

“Kiddo, don’t be mean!” The only reply Patton got was displeased grumbling, but he went on unbothered. “And we don’t know if he even likes that scary stuff, or if he already has it, if he does.” “And scary stories belong to Halloween, not Christmas.”

“Yeah, well, we don’t know his size, so we can’t make him a hoodie either, not even regarding how strenuous it’d be to make a hoodie in such a short amount of time.”

“Uh, I can conjure?”

“But it’s a present, it should be handmade!”

“Okay, well, we can’t very well sneak into his room and just measure him-”

“-I could! It’s what I did to get the measurements for your Christmas sweater last year! Did you know that you sleep-talk?”

“No, I… did not, Patton. Thanks for informing me of that,” Logan noted, stiffly. He’d definitely get a lock tomorrow. Maybe earlier.

“You’re welcome! Oh! What if we get him a housewarming present?”

“And what would that be? Maybe a stocked wardrobe?... I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything other than that hoodie in years, it’s a crime.”

“Roman!”

“I can’t help it if it’s true!”

“Well, maybe he just gets cold quickly?”

“I think it’s more likely to be a coping mechanism, seeing as Sides usually have a deeper connection with what they embody, and hoodies being widely considered to be calming for people dealing with heightened anxiety due to stimulating the skin, offering warmth and comfort, as well as hiding the person’s figure.”

“Either way, we could make him a blanket! That way, he’d be warm, and whenever he uses it he can remember that even though none of us expected this, he is welcome here!”

“A grand idea, Padre!”

“Thank you Roman!”

“It does seem fitting. I’d suggest Princey designs it, for obvious reasons, while Patton and I make the actual blanket.”

“That emo nightmare won’t know what hit him, it’ll look so amazing!”

“Remember that it’s supposed to fit his aesthetic!”

“Shall do, dear Patton!”

“Aaand he’s gone. Well, let’s start on the actual blanket. Would you mind conjuring all we need, and get Thomas to research the process behind making a blanket, I don’t think I’ve got one in my records, and you’re more familiar with creating a sudden flash of interest in one of these,” he fished for a flash card, just to be sure,” DIY-projects.”

“Course, Lo. Ohhh, how about we make it weighted?”

“Like the one we made for Roman, so his incessant moving wouldn’t keep him up even longer? Well, I don’t see anything wrong with it, although it’d be a considerable amount of extra work.”

“I’m sure we’ll manage!”

So it was decided.

Roman came down with his drawing pad just a few minutes later, Logan planning how to do the actual blanket, guessing how much Anxiety would weigh to calculate the amount of pellets they’d need, and how much cotton would be needed to make it pleasantly soft, while Patton hummed christmas carols to himself, rolling out a batch of sugar cookies he’d quickly thrown together, before lining up a batch of different cookie cutters to make as many different shapes as possible. He especially liked the pumpkin and the elephant ones, as they always made Logan pinch his brow in that adorable, confused way of his.

It didn’t take long for Logan to be finished with the match behind it, and he sat next to Roman- Patton subtly keeping an eye on them, to make sure they wouldn’t argue too badly- looking over the prince’s designs and offering both praise and criticism. Both working towards a shared goal, it was easier to accept each other’s differences, easier to appreciate the other’s strengths.

The end product was a mix of black, purple and red, with stripes of white on the upper side, truly capturing Anxiety’s emo style, even if it seemed a bit more goth than his usual aesthetic. The flannel pattern wasn’t the main subject of their pride, though. That would the underside of the blanket, where they’d settled for a soft, crocheted blanket from Patton, in a light violet tone that looked like the clouds in the twilight of the dying sun, a calming colour with black embroidery they’d added, at the start just to proof that they were better at it than the other. The final product was a mixture of extravagant floral swirls and linear, geometric shapes, somehow slotting together perfectly. Patton squealed as he saw the two pieces of fabric, hugging both of them, and crinkling the blankets, almost choking on his own breath and excitement.

Patton had the most experience with the sewing machine, ,so he was the one sewing the blanket together, Logan weighing the pellets and mixing them with cotton to put into the patterns of the quilt and Roman eating some- not all!- of the sugar cookies- “A snack deserves a snack!”- and decorating the others, singing festive broadway and disney songs under his breath to avoid Logan getting into another tirade about waking their new housemate.

A bit more than an hour later, the quilt was finished, and the Sides looked it with pride. Anxiety would surely love his present! Patton wrote a quick note to put on the folded blanket and, seeing as Logan was barely seeing straight and Roman had offered to carry him to bed, walked upstairs and to Anxiety’s room, knocking quietly to check if he was awake, before slipping inside to quickly put the blanket on the desk, but- the kiddo was freezing! He was freezing, even under his numerous blankets and covers, this wouldn’t do! Patton covered the dark Side with the quilt, tucking him in as the kiddo snuggled deeper into the weighted blanket, quickly stilling, a tenseness leaving his form that Patton hadn’t even noticed was there. He put the note on Anxiety’s bedside cabinet and snuck out again.

“Merry Christmas, kiddo!”

They all tried to cover their disappointment when Anxiety failed to acknowledge their gift, if anything only growing more hostile with time, and never once uttering a thank you. Unknowing that the dark Side had accidentally knocked their note under his bed when reaching for his phone, Roman saw no reason not to let his hurt turn into bitterness, enjoying to get a rise out of the ungrateful Side. Logan, of course, had no such emotionally based reasoning, but if pressed he would admit that the other Side’s dismissal of their efforts was a tad… rude. But then again, he probably thought it a silly gesture, with his talk of Dark Sides not “doing” holidays, so he’d be glad to respect his views. Patton tried to stay nice, but wrapped under his covers, he was hurt- but he kept on hoping, he was sure Anxiety was nice under all his snarling and teasing!

He’d eventually be proven right, but none of the Light Sides knew that yet.

Many home owners find themselves dreaming of renovating after buying their first home, but since purchasing this Brunswick East property in 2017, artist Katie Eraser and partner Jay Longworth haven’t changed a thing! 

The couple fell in love with the home’s period features (decorative ceilings that differ in every room, Victorian-era glass light fittings, leadlight windows, and ornate fireplaces), so they’ve made very few structural changes here, instead injecting their own personal style by filling the space with colourful artwork, distinctive furniture and collectibles. 

Katie and Jay’s extensive art collection has been grouped by colour specifically for each room, forming a bold interior palette that evolves as you walk through the house. ‘Katie is a maximalist and loves colour, so we have left the walls white so that the artworks and brightly coloured furniture and ceramics can pop,’ Jay says. 

Many of these paintings have been created by Katie herself in the home’s sunroom-turned-studio, including the portrait in the dining room of her and Jay. Most other works have been collected or traded from friends. ‘I love being around them and feel super inspired seeing them every day,’ says Katie. ‘They represent a collection of the community of people that we love and admire.’ 

Other key pieces adding to this home’s artful aesthetic are the rug designed by the Indigenous artist Gayle Napangardi Gibson, the rose velvet lounge, statement dark green Togo armchair, and Moroccan rug in the living room.

There’s nothing more precious than a new baby and putting together a collection of sweet baby gifts can be so meaningful for parents-to-be! I love shopping and gathering up gifts to create a beautiful arrangement and I’m all about a pretty presentation. I thought I’d share a few I’ve made this past year to help inspire you if you’re stuck or looking for some examples to go by. Some affiliate links included. 

Baby Shower Gift Basket Tips

Tips for personalizing a gift for a new little person makes if feel so special, right? Here are a few tips to help:

Registry – most parents-to-be will share their baby shower registry. Try to choose a few items from their hand selected wish list when possible.

Gender – it’s rare that we don’t know this ahead of time and completely unnecessary but if you do know, it does narrow down options. 

Name – even more rare, but if it is known, I love to add something monogrammed – specifically, I love adding a wall art letter or creating a personalized iron on decal. 

Theme – a lot of the time, the baby shower invitation will give a hint to the nursery theme or design style … elephants, owls, woodland, boho, Noah’s ark, etc.  

Parents’ hobbies, collections, lifestyle. Do they love the outdoors (fishing? hunting?), love their dog(s)?, have a favorite sport’s team? 

Your signature piece – for example, I’m all about wellness so I try to include chemical free, natural, organic options when I can. 

Diapers & board book – baby showers now will often host a special raffle for bringing one of these items. I always use a pack of Honest newborn diapers in the bottom of the basket to lift the gifts. Either way, diapers are SUPER helpful and adding a favorite children’s story or baby board book to create a library of bedtime stories is one of my favorite things to add. 

Gift wrap a few of the items with coordinating wrapping paper. I often use what I have on hand. It doesn’t have to be specific baby shower themed.
