What may just look like an ordinary bridge that connects two neighborhoods bisected by a busy local road in the city of San Juan is the only remaining section of an aqueduct that once supplied water to the city of Manila from a nearby water reservoir during the Spanish colonial times.

In 1843, Manila experienced a cholera outbreak and the Spanish local government at that time finally realized the need for new sources of water. For many years, the residents of Manila sourced their water supply from nearby creeks, underground wells, and the Pasig River. But with the growing population, water pollution ensued and the outbreak of diseases.

The local government identified the San Mateo River (now Marikina River) as the best water source. A dam was constructed and a series of underground and above-ground water pipes were placed to bring the water to a newly constructed underground water tank in El Deposito in the town of San Juan. From there, an aqueduct was built to eventually distribute the water to Manila, then home to around 300,000 residents in 1860s. This water system was used until 1955. It was eventually abandoned and the aqueducts were dismantled to make way for rapid urbanization.

The structure has been filled with cement and covered with overgrown on its edges. There’s a series of concrete steps to get to the top of the arch where you can see the traffic from the road underneath.

Know Before You Go

The locals refer to the structure as the Arko (the arch). It is a short walk from the Pinaglabanan Shrine at the end of Sevilla Street.

PHOTO ESSAY

June 1, 2023 (Thursday) our school Trece Martires City College decided to conduct an educational tour for all the 1st and 2nd year students of Education Department.

On the said date I suddenly woke up when the alarm clock went off at 5am. We prepared early because our call time is at 6 am in the morning and it takes 2 hours to get to our first destination.

We just slept, ate and talk with our tour guide kuya Ivan on our way, and when we go in there it was 8 am, we went straight to our first destination which is MUSEO EL DEPOSITO it is a historical museum in the city of San Juan in Metro Manila that features The Carriedo water system, including the El Deposito underwater reservoir. It's kinda smelly underground that's why we didn't stay there for a long.

There was also The Museo ng katipunan that features artifacts which relate to the Philippine Revolution and The Katipunan. As I enter the museum I was mesmerized seeing the documents such as cedulas, oaths, membership forms, as well as medals, anting-anting and weapons used by the Katipunan. It has three galleries namely: The Audio-Visual Room, Resource Center, and The Virtual Reality Room. The audiovisual room narrates the period prior to the establishment of The Carriedo Waterworks in 1882, The Resource Center features artifacts, photographs, prints and scale models, while The Virtual Reality room provides a re-enactment of the Battle of San Juan del Monte to the museum visitors. The museum is situated within the grounds of the Pinaglabanan Shrine. The structure and everything you will see there is so beautiful and also the staffs are very accommodating as we enter the building.

Our second destination is a place where we can see the beauty of Intramuros it is The Baluarte De San Diego and The fort Santiago. Fun fact did you know that Intramuros is also called as a "walled city"? in the reason of its mainly built as a defensive curtain to defend the occupant from outside aggression and It has a compressed gauze-like system of streets and a central square surrounded by government offices.

At this point in time were we are in the 21st century intramuros is now a well-maintained park and popular tourist destination that has a fast food restaurants and shops catering mostly to the student population within Intramuros.

There are also other places that you must see when you go in Intramuros such as...

Schools ( Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Colegio de Santa Rosa, Lyceum of the Philippines University etc )

Churches (  Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, San Ignacio Church, Guadalupe Shrine in Fort Santiago etc )

Monuments and Statues

12 in the afternoon it was lunch time while looking for a place to eat we only have an hour to had a lunch because our last spot is on star city. Our bus decided to park at Harbour Square then we found out that there's a Jollibee Fast food restaurant. so me and my friends decided to bring our packed lunch and eat there while looking at the refershing view of Manila Bay.

For our last and final destination, after we had our lunch we headed quickly inside the Star City so that no time will waste. As you enter the Star City you will first see the stall selling of souvenir items like stuff toys, T-shirts ,candies, toys etc. In this amusement park you will enjoy for the reason that there are 25 various types of rides and attractions that worth what you paid for though we didnt have much picture inside the park because other than the fact that we enjoy the rides we only had 4 hours to stay but in the end of the day we still seize the moment.

The first thing I noticed about intramuros is that you really need a lot of energy to walk around and you must have a bottle of water with you to avoid dehydration.

Even though the time I spend there was limited, I still enjoyed it and learned a lot of things regarding our own history, nothing can replace the warmth feeling that I felt during our educational trip so you guys should try to visit Intramuros and Star City I can vouch for the authencity of it, it was a good call indeed that you won't regret coming there, I was hoping I could visit Intramuros again but with my family.

TRAVELOGUE : "Educational Tour 2023"

Educational tour or a Field trip is a very fun experience. March 18, 2023, saturday we are going into many different places, our first stop is at Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine and Museum, it is the ancestral home of Emilio Aguinaldo the first president of the Philippines. The shrine and museum is located at Kawit, Cavite Philippines, where June 12,1898, the Philippines declaration of independence from Spain was proclaimed. Aguinaldo shrine is a good place to learn about history. Aguinaldo museum has featured artifacts like aguirre sword, mela the mesa altar, and Ah tay bed, nestor and noel, The neveras and many more. Our next destination is Pinaglabanan Shrine and El Deposito at San Juan, Metro Manila Philippines. We learned from our tour guide kuya Alvin that the Philippine revolution started at the site of the pinaglabanan shrine in San Juan City where Bonifacio led hundreds of katipuneros on a mission to cut the water supply of intramuros, where most of spanish officials lived. We've learned that the one who has water is the one who is powerful because water is essential.

After we go to pinaglabanan shrine our next is the El deposito, El Deposito is a very interesting museum because it is an old underground water reservoir in the City of San Juan in Metro Manila. Our tour guide also said that it was built by the Spanish authorities in 1880 with capacity of 15 million gallons to provide the residents of Manila. Inside the museum features artifacts, photographs, prints, and scale models. El Deposito is used as an armory during American and Japanese rule, a hospital for tuberculosis patients, and a firing range. We consume much of our time at the museum and we do not have much time so our teachers and tour guides desides that we will skip the lunch at MOA and the intramuros tour.

Our last stop is at Star City me and my friends are so excited to try the fun and extreme rides. It was a really fun and memorable experience in my life. We try star frisbee I rate it as a 10/10,second is surf dance 100/10 it was really fun at the same time feel anxious. Third is the star flyer I rate it as 5/10 I feel sa anxious and scared and my eyes are close the whole time HAHAHAH. Educational tour is fun and have a lot to learn from history.

yes YES!! I think so much about how the Battle of Tirad Pass was compared to Leonidas at Thermopylae and how horrifying it is to valorise what was objectively just a catastrophic failure of leadership and cowardice in Aguinaldo’s part, like, two burials happened there.

the men who were slaughtered, and a second burial that appropriated the language of the classical history and it’s associated glory to cover it up. maybe a third burial of self, because those kinds of comparisons were made to claim for the Philippines the same kind of glory that the Europeans used to justify their violence, and it’s just. sad.

Tirad Pass, like Bataan, is a bad shrine for Filipinos, because there we feel absolved of the faults that lead to such disasters as Tirad and Bataan, or for that matter, Pinaglabanan and Caloocan. When you talk about Philippino history and then Roman history, as a Venezuelan it's been making me think about our history and like, I've always thought there's a lot of similarity there but now it's like...its so similar. Your house is haunted too! I always think about how we won wars against the colonizers but their ghosts are still there, and they still sit at the dinner table with us every night. Your work is so cool, I feel like I can extend that train of thought further through time. I've never been interested in Rome but now I kinda am!

and so many people are named after figures from ancient Rome (I know enough Mark Anthonys I've run out of differentiating nicknames for everyone) that it rivals Catholic saints for naming conventions. neo classical architecture had it's moment in the sun in Manila, our ilustrados brought some of it back when they returned from Spain to call for reform, and then independence, and I am struggling to hold back a plague-infection comparison about that. like, something else crept in with Spain, and like Spain's ghosts, it Did Not Leave.

but on the other hand! there's a long, centuries long, tradition of using the events of the Fall of the Republic to discourse, discuss, to vent or call for action, current events. it provides a interlocutor when something hurts too much to say directly, it provides a stage to explore a tragedy that echoes in our own histories, it gives a script to voice an ideal that a government might otherwise put down. how many centuries have we used Brutus (and Cassius) to rail against Tyranny, and how many centuries with equal enthusiasm have people used Julius Caesar as a martyr to justify the rights of Kings and Empires? these things are equally as important (in a different way) from the ancient events that actually transpired. (this specific topic, of Brutus & the Assassination of Caesar and it's literary revivals in history, are the focus of The Brutus Revival, Manfredi Piccolomini)

and the cores of these things conflict with each other, but in that friction, it's like there's an invitation to sit down and think for a minute. to look back at history and feel it's immediacy in the present.

ANYWAY I got carried away, but I am glad!! that my stuff could make Rome interesting!!! I hope that you find new doors of thoughts to explore!!!!!!!
