Pimm's Cups

Ava and I are loving our new flat in Tāmaki Makaurau, so even if we're only here for a few days, we are taking the time to lounge in the sun on the balcony, with beautifully refreshing Pimm's Cups --a classic of Summer cocktails for almost two centuries!-- at arm's length! Cheers!

Ingredients (serves 2):

3 medium Garden Strawberries 

1/3 cucumber

1 orange

about 2 or 3 dozens small ice cubes

1/2 large lemon

120 millilitres/4 fluid ounces Pimm's No. 1

chilled Ginger Ale (like Bundaberg's), to top

2 sprigs fresh mint

Rinse the Strawberries, cucumber and orange under cold water. Then, pat them dry.

Halve two of the Strawberries, and cut six thin slices cucumber and two slices orange. Set aside.

Fill two Whisky or Collins glasses to three-quarters with ice cubes.

Thoroughly squeeze lemon juice, and divide between both glasses. Pour Pimm's No. 1 over the ice and lemon juice in each glass, and add an orange slice in each. Top with chilled ginger ale.

Garnish with reserved cucumber slices, Strawberries and mint sprigs.

Enjoy Pimm's Cups immediately, preferably in good company...

An Ode to Pimm’s

The White Ferry Hostel in London is near Victoria Station, in an upscale area of gracious, cream-colored Georgian buildings fronted with huge columns and wearing a prosperous air. Breakfast is served in the pub, a charming and whimsical place to enjoy an English breakfast, and they have a summer offer that is not to be refused: a whole pitcher of Pimm’s for ten pounds. Planning for my next trip, I bought a German-English dictionary and came back to an outdoor table to drink Pimm’s, eat Red Leicester and review vocabulary. Ohh Pimm’s, what sublime English nectar for a warm, tranquil summer afternoon! Why didn’t my English grandfather bring this to Canada with him? Never mind your bloody tea. Pimm’s and lemonade, sliced cucumbers and oranges, chunks of fresh strawberry, well muddled with plenty of ice and fresh mint. I’ve poured twenty-seven glasses and the pitcher is still half full. It’s doing wonders for my German. Es ist jetzt wunderbar! Nächste Mittwoch ich nach Hamburg fahre.

I started this Parse comic almost a year ago (!) but I’ve only just managed to put it together now. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about Kent and how he mostly exists in bits and pieces as seen through the eyes of other characters.

There’s just something about being haunted and defined by your past (mistakes) but also finding strength on your own. (And how there can still a hopeful ending despite it all.)

So for some more details:

- I am fairly time-poor with a huge amount of commitments: Grownup Job Senior Promotion, three small kids on summer holidays/starting school, writing a novel fanfic for sick friend, peak growing/harvest season at allotment, etc. so im only offering “what I can actually deliver” at this time

- swan comic is a new idea, people like those don’t they? Not sure of how fundraising mechanism would work here but maybe taking prompts?

- not sure how essay would work but it’s probably my best/most appealing skill?

- material items in exchange for a minimum fixed amount. So offline I’m most known for material works. I’m not a BAD printmaker / craftworker and for this I would be looking at designing a sort of limited print run of greeting card style original hand printed prints. I know you guys aren’t familiar with this work from me, so this would involve a bit of trust that An Art from me would be worth at least £5 lmao. However it’s kind of nice to get something real in the mail right??

- super worried about fandom auction so this would be mostly a register of interest that I’d take to more experienced people and use as leverage to start an auction; I’m not in a great place to provide much actual legwork here. I also have huge guilt from like 2000-something where someone paid A HUNDRED AND LIKE 20 DOLLARS to charity for earthquake survivors and I DID NOT FINISH THE FIC AND I HAD to write to them, weepingly, apologising forever about it, and they were so graceful, they forgave me and wrote off my fandom auction contribution, but I had never watched the tv show they requested and was in the process of romancing dr glass and it all went SO wrong, this MIGHT heal my scars of shame from fandom auctions generally OR might make them worse. It itvery hard to write fic actually it’s my worst skill pls don’t pick this

Pimm's Plums

Simple and bright, these Pimm's Plums end a Summer lunch on a light and fruity note, and they're easy to bring on a picnic, too!

Ingredients (serves 2):

2 ripe Satsuma (red) Plums

1/2 small orange

2 tablespoons Pimm's No. 1

Rinse Satsuma Plums. Halve and pit them, and cut them into slices. Place plum slices into serving bowl.

Squeeze the juice of the orange.

Drizzle orange juice and Pimm's No. 1 over the plums. Toss well, to mix.

Place in the refrigerator, at least one hour.

Serve Pimm's Plums chilled.
