i just call em like I see em and

A) extremely close friendship in college (most likely initially fueled by pair bonding over juxtaposed mommy/daddy issues) interrupted by misato hooking up with kaji–which ritsuko talks about w obviouuuus bitterness and perhaps a lil bit of jealousy. ‘shes not who i thought she was’ etc etc. babys first breakup :/

B) they’re each others ‘best friend’ and clearly do care about each other (often serving as confidants) but they’re just as often overly critical or hostile. in some ways theyre the only ones willing to actually hold each other accountable for their mistakes and negative behaviours–though usually with the sort of bitchy bitterness that belies how these behaviours (misato’s immaturity and impulsiveness, ritsuko’s emotional detachment) lie at the root of the distance between them (aka. the breakup). theyre familiar, maybe overly so, with each other’s worst selves, familiar with their reluctance to address it, and familiar with the fact that (as much as they hate this about the other) their mutual refusal to confront their problems is one of the things that makes them most similar–which makes them most comprehensible to the other.

B[2]) this specific combination of affection + understanding + resentment + hostility? That kind of relationship thats like ‘i love you because you know me and i love you because you are not a good person and i hate you because you reflect my own ugliness, because you will never change, because nothing will ever work out between us as long as we are both the same kind of awful (which is why I love you)’? ex girlfriend behavior
