My first chapter :0
This is just a short first chapter for a story I want to start writing. I don't have a name for it but I want to make short updates like this to progress the story.
Enjoy :)
--------------------------
What am I doing here?
I was surrounded by the sound of excited chatter and metal chairs scraping against the wooden floors; the sound of bags unzipping, papers flapping about, and laptops booting up. I sat to the side, alone, waiting for my group to form around me. I hadn’t been to any of the seminars that had taken place here for the last 3 months. It was early December, of my first year at uni. I had missed out on 3 months worth of lectures, discussions, society-joining, and club-going. I had missed out on the little things like texting groupchats and asking who was going to be in so that I knew whether or not I’d be sitting alone at lunch or at lectures; I had missed out on that first day introductory conversation you have at the course social event where a really cool, trendy-dressed girl is like: “OMG! Hey, I like your Ouran Highschool badge, it’s literally my favourite anime!” — The starter conversation that earns you that first uni friend.
Now I’m paying the consequences: awkward loneliness.
There was nobody asking me a sympathetic “Oh. Hey. Are you new? Would you like to come sit with us?” Nor a sweet, friendly smile accompanied by pity-filled eyes. I got absolutely nothing. I was invisible. Nobody knew who I was and it felt terrible.
Everyone went off into their groups, they all seem to have formed their little cliques; like their own security bubble. I didn’t want to burst their ‘bouba’ vibrations with my ‘kiki’ energy so I decided to stay alone. I brought out my ipad to look at what I had written for this week’s discussion topic. Over and over I read the same 300 words. It wasn’t a lot at all, but sharing it with others would have been nice. It was a simple task - To write a short introduction, on a book of choice, with regards to one of the 6 literary theories. I chose to write a post-colonial piece on the children’s book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to be comedic. I thought it would be a fun way to present myself, to say I’m not some weird loser who just appeared out of nowhere, I’m—
“HI! SORRY I’M SO LATE! Someone jumped onto the tracks again and–” A bunch of condoling ooh’s came from the class. The professor chimed in to gain control over the sudden disruption.
“Oh wow, umm, that’s quite alright” He looked to his watched on his left wrist. ”You’re not too late. Plus it’s better to come in late than to never show up. Please take a seat with Vivienne over there and discuss your assignment.”
The whole class class turned to look at me as if they all now just noticed my existence. It made me nervous. The unnamed girl complied and pulled up a chair next to me.
“Hi, I’m Dolores, nice to meet you.”
