Story - summarized

Tavi attends a tea party with several upper-class women. He charms them with his wit, kindness, and a couple of magic tricks. In return, they offer him their jewelry. With the gems, he finally has enough for a cruise ticket for the ship Princess Yesenia. It's leaving Pigeon for Apple soon, and there's nothing left for Tavi here. His family has no money, and he seems to be the last one left.

His last visit is with Madam Wilder, wife to the viscount. He hopes their investment would help him not just flee to Apple, but also get a new start there. However, Mrs. Wilder is distraught that her precious cat is missing. The cat only stays on the manor's grounds, so if the cat isn't there, someone stole it.

Tavi agrees to help find the cat. In return, Mrs. Wilder will arrange a meeting with the viscount.

Tavi enlists the help of the children in the slums, offering them food as they look for the cat. Finally, they notice strange behavior from the manager of a local grocery store. He goes to investigate himself. Sure enough, the manager is suspicious. Tavi pretends to complain about the nobles being snobbish. He mentions that the Wilder cat's collar is made from priceless stones, that's how snooty and extravagant the upper class is.

After leaving the store, he spies on the manager as he leaves the shop and hurries to an abandoned courtyard. Inside are all manner of dogs and cats. The manager slips in and steals the collar. It's actually just colored glass, but the manager is none the wiser.

Tavi sneaks into the courtyard and rescues the Wilder cat. And since he knows that all the other dogs and cats here will end up dead anyway, he sets them all free. Now, he can return to the Wilder estate.

But guards wait for him there. They bring the cat inside, but then beat up Tavi. Someone had tipped them off that he had been collecting jewels and cash from the noblewomen, and they think he stole them. They leave him sore, dirty, and with only a tiny amount of cash. No way is Tavi leaving Pigeon.

In the alleyway, an old woman offers him an antique notebook, claiming it's about love. He buys it off of her, giving her the last of his money. The woman vanishes before he can ask her anything. He flips through the notebook, which is written in a strange language. But he can read enough to know this is about an unlucky Knight who saves a Princess.

Tavi gets an idea for how to get onto the Princess Yesenia cruise ship.

Connections

-Yesenia reveals in her Reflection for Shimmering Star that Tavi indeed is from a lowly family. And the notebook he receives seems to be combining his two lives, mentioning a Knight and the notebook itself.

-Aphrodia is the woman that gives Tavi the notebook. She gave Tavi and Yesenia her blessing thousands of years ago in the forest, as shown in Shimmering Star, and in the last Side Story of the hell event, Aphrodia appears and admits she helped Tavi reunite with Yesenia by giving him the notebook.

-Tavi isn't the only one in Miraland who grew up in the slums. Qin Yi was tired of being abandoned by his mother, so Mind Maze 3 and its featured suit Out the Phoenix Palace mark his shift into joining the Qin family and rising to the top. And Krista from the Fallen Kingdom Sorrows hell event grew up in the slums (Midnight Tears) and agrees to suffer and cry for the blessing of Delmond and to feed and clothe the poor (Diamond Teardrop).

Fun Facts

-At the tea party, Tavi and the ladies played bridge. Bridge is a game with two pairs of players, each pair making a team. The goal is for each team to earn points by strategizing and tricking the other team for the best cards. You can learn more here.

-The guards think that Tavi stole the gems from the noblewomen, but in the Profile for the Designer's Reflection, the noblewomen reveal they knew Tavi wanted money from them. But they find him charming, and they appreciate how easily he can brighten someone's day. So, they don't mind giving him their jewelry if it means they can have a splendid day with him.

-While Tavi may be after money, he still has a kind heart. He does his best to help the slum children, and he genuinely loves performing magic tricks for others if it makes them happy.

Our amazing GM @oneirotect has set us in 207 AC between the first and second Blackfyre Rebellions (around 90 years before Game of Thrones and 50 years after the death of the last known dragon). So far we've travelled across the Narrow Sea, partied in Braavos, escaped an assassination attempt by the Golden Company, made some difficult political decisions and started romantic entanglements with likely very dire consequences.

I am a firm believer that while Inej is away at sea, she sends Kaz weekly letters about her endeavors. sometimes she attaches a package, often including a new hat for him, but no matter what, he always keeps every single one. it doesn't matter if she wrote 15 pages or 1 paragraph. they all go in a box he keeps in his room, and he reads them over and over when he's missing her too much. just to see her handwriting again

Story - summarized

Out of all the royals and nobles in the kingdom of Oro, Yesenia is the only one who cares about character over birth status. Everyone has grown complacent, not caring about helping others or braving trials. Even her own father, the king, has abandoned politics and work. And all the Knights have resorted to drinking, gambling, and chasing girls.

All but one. Tavi is the only Knight to be there by merit, as his family had lost wealth and status over time. The other Knights bully him, and even the palace maids turn up their noses. But Yesenia can see the bravery and virtue in him. She decides to make him her personal Knight. They go everywhere together, Tavi standing guard as Yesenia takes care of political matters.

Over time, they fall in love, sharing glances on their walks and offering little gifts. But neither speaks aloud of their feelings. The closest they come to admitting their love is at Yesenia's birthday ball. She is supposed to dance with foreign princes, so her father may secure an alliance through marriage. Instead, she steals a moment with Tavi on the moonlit terrace, wishing to dance with him instead.

Soon after, a neighboring kingdom of elves threatens to attack Oro. The princes that had come for Yesenia (and to steal Oro for themselves) all gave up on the marriage alliance, instead allying with each other to invade the kingdom.

The king and nobles abandon their duties, and the Knights run away, leaving the people to fend for themselves. Proudly, Yesenia takes up the mantle to keep Oro together as long as she can. Tavi wants her to run away and be safe... and if possible, to run away with her. But she won't abandon her people like the shallow, foolish court.

Later that night, the war reaches the palace walls. Oro is defeated. Rather than be taken prisoner or taken advantage of, Yesenia chooses to kill herself, breaking her precious gold-and-diamond necklace. Her dying thoughts are of Tavi, wishing she could see him one last time.

Connections

-The old woman in the forest is Aphrodia. In the last episode of the Side Stories for the hell event, Aphrodia appears and shares a memory of tricking Tavi and Yesenia into thinking she was hurt. She used this opportunity to see how the two felt about each other, and then to give them her blessing.

-In fact, Yesenia saw Tavi running toward her as she lay dying. During the last episode of the Sleeping Star of Eternity event, we find out that Tavi carried her lifeless body back to her room before reciting an incantation. That spell preserved her life in the fancy necklace, so when it would be returned, Yesenia would wake up.

-This is the second fallen kingdom of Miraland that we've encountered. First, we visited Krista's old home, Delmond. And now, we learn about Oro. Both are tied to Pigeon Kingdom, as Delmond worshiped Arionus, the ancestor of the Water Elves, and the neighboring kingdom of elves that attacked Oro will eventually become Pigeon Kingdom.

Fun Facts

-The fallen kingdoms of Miraland seem to be named after precious materials. Delmond is a play on "diamond" and the crystals Krista cried, and Oro is from the Latin for "gold," which describes Yesenia's dress and the special necklace.

-From what I was able to find online, the name "Yesenia" means "palm tree," and palm trees are symbols of prosperity and eternal life. But it's unclear if the name is Spanish, Arabic, or Russian in origin.

-Since the name Oro refers to gold, a fun fact about gold is that the purer the metal, the more malleable it is. To make a sturdy form of gold, it needs to combine with another metal to form an alloy.
