The Virgin Mary teaching reading to the Infant Jesus (c.1630). Pieter Fransz de Grebber (Dutch, c.1600-1652/1653?). Oil on wood. Musée des beaux-arts Quimper.
The painting bears a "Rembrandt" signature and was so attributed until the beginning of the 20th century. Grebber rivals and plays with Rembrandt as much in the subject as in the game of grays and lights. The artist offers us an evocation full of humility and Christian tenderness of the Virgin Mary teaching reading to the Child Jesus, the child chubby and naked as a little angel.
