On this day in 1959, the Pidjiguiti Massacre occurred when colonizers killed dozens of striking dock workers in Portuguese Guinea. The event led PAIGC, a party of leftist revolutionaries, to abandon their non-violent tactics and initiate a successful war of independence against Portugal.
The Pidjiguiti Massacre was an attack on striking workers that took place on this day in 1959, at the Port of Bissau's Pidjiguiti docks in Bissau, Portuguese Guinea. Dock workers there went on strike, seeking higher pay, but the manager called the Portuguese state police (PIDE), who fired into the crowd, killing at least 25 people (some estimates are closer to 50).
The government blamed the left-wing revolutionary group Partido Africano para a Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC), arresting several of its members. One notable founder and leader of the party was Amílcar Cabral, a pan-African socialist assassinated in 1973.
The incident caused PAIGC to abandon their campaign of nonviolent resistance, leading directly to the Guinea-Bissau War of Independence in 1963 (sometimes known as "Portugal's Vietnam", because of the protracted guerrilla warfare and political strife within the colonizing country), which culminated in independence for Cape Verde and all of Portuguese Africa.
Today, near the Pidjiguiti docks, there is a large black fist known as the "Hand of Timba", which commemorates those killed that day.

Afrodite, Sena e o ipiranga do corpo

August 3, 1959: Portuguese police kill 50+ striking dockworkers in Guinea
On August 3, 1959, Portuguese officers of the International and State Defense Police (PIDE) opened fire on a group of striking dockworkers in Bissau, killing at least fifty people. Several European colonies in Africa had been granted political independence, and many more were on a similar road, but Portugal had resisted taking similar action with its African colonies. The semi-clandestine African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) had been organizing supporters since 1956, and became involved in a strike for better salaries for the dockworkers at the port of Pidjiguiti in Bissau. The PIDE arrived at the dock where the workers were picketing and opened fire, while the military prevented people from leaving the area. At least fifty people were killed. The government blamed PAIGC for causing "trouble", and the organization went underground. The PAIGC soon turned to armed struggle, and fought a long war for independence alongside revolutionary movements in Portugal's other African colonies, and supported by China, Cuba, and the Soviet bloc. Guinea-Bissau, along with Portugal's other African colonies, finally won independence after a military coup in Lisbon.
