Re-upping a few posts from my brief time in the Gadsden Purchase area a little over four years ago.
Update: the location stated above seems correct. Once again that is Newman Peak in the background.

In Search of the Sunset Route
As part of my general research, I wanted to spend some time along Southern Pacific’s Sunset Route, which dates to the 19th century. The SP built into this area from California, and arrived in Tucson in 1880.
These images, of a westbound Union Pacific train, were made just east of Picacho. The exact location is not far from where Southern Pacific’s line to Phoenix branches off from the Sunset Route and heads due north.
The SP was subsumed into the Union Pacific on September 11th 1996.
Three images by Richard Koenig; taken October 26th 2018.

Golden Aster - March 2023
As we were leaving Picacho Peak State Park, Kathy noticed several cars pulled over on the side of the road. I thought it was just because of the mile-long line of cars waiting to get into the park, but Kathy saw what they were looking at and said, “Turn around.”
What they had stopped for was a patch of wildflowers growing in the ditch in front of an abandoned gas station. There were red ones and yellow ones and orange ones. The orange ones and yellow ones were asters. This image is a closeup of a couple of Golden Aster blooms. The second image is one of the clusters of wildflowers on the edge of the ditch.

02/04/24 - Picacho Peak State Park, AZ - WE GO WAY BACK - When snowbirding in Tucson, we make it a point to visit with Ralph, an old friend from high school who has always stayed in touch. We are both military brats and went to high school together in Germany. We were part of the Big 3 on the cross-country team; we bicycled the coast of Spain together; bagged groceries at the Commissary; went on numerous low budget ski trips and double dated at Senior prom. Those are just some of the highlights from some of the best years of my life. Ralph was a big part of many of my best memories from that time. So as you might imagine, it’s never been hard to stay in touch and we always have lots of good material to reminisce about. The best part is how our memories about a specific event are often quite different. Senioritus on both our parts I guess or stories getting better every time you tell them.
