Where is CBD used?

What is the Basic Science of Cannabinoids?

CBD (cannabidiol), a cannabinoid first isolated in 1963 by Israeli scientist Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, is found in both the cannabis and hemp plants. This is because both of these plants stem from the same family tree; the Cannabaceae family of flowering plants. Although both plants come from the same family, they’re very different plants. The simplest way to describe their difference is in terms of the cannabinoid THC (tetrahydrocannabinol); Hemp plants contain less than .03% THC, cannabis plants contain more than .03% THC.

And of course, this little difference: THC gets you high, CBD doesn’t.

Cannabinoids are a class of diverse chemical compounds that act on cannabinoid receptors within our body, also known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

You can think of the ECS as a balancing mechanism that supports homeostasis. It has been described as a “lock and key” system in that cannabinoids essentially “unlock” a receptor, causing a series of reactions throughout our body.

Our body actually produces its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids (endo meaning endogenous or internal in origin), when we need them to help support homeostasis within our body.

But sometimes our body’s homeostasis is dysregulated, and our endocannabinoid system needs a bit of support. This is when we reach for a phytocannabinoid (phyto meaning from the plant), like CBD to help support homeostasis.

What Benefits does CBD have for Skin?

You might be wondering exactly how CBD can help regulate homeostasis and treat so many different conditions.

CBD has been used for centuries by healers to successfully relieve pain and treat many different skin conditions from eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.

Modern science is now starting to uncover what healers have known for generations: CBD carries what scientists call a “pleiotropic effect”, which means CBD has the ability to do more than one thing at a time.

And a recent study out of the University of Modena, Italy titled, ‘The Therapeutic Effect of CBD-Enriched Ointment In Inflammatory Skin Diseases And Cutaneous Scars’ concluded topical CBD is, “a safe and effective non-invasive alternative for improving the quality of life in patients with some skin disorders, especially on the inflammatory background.” The study included 20 psoriasis, eczema, or scarring patients who found a CBD ointment improved measures of skin hydration (by moisturizing and preventing water loss), boosted elasticity in the skin, and in general bettered their quality of life.

Along with being a new therapy for inflammatory skin diseases, CBD is also being studied for and used in the treatment of acne. In June of 2019, The American Society for Microbiology released preliminary research, ‘Cannabidiol is a Powerful New Antibiotic’ finding topical CBD may help kill a, “a wide range of Gram-positive bacteria” which is a cause of acne.

All of this new research adds up to an exciting landscape for CBD and skincare products.

So, stem cells, hm? Yes, the Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Solutions kit contains  stem cells that are coming from a blend of fruit stem cells- infused with Vitamin C and grapeseed. This is a powerful combination to fight the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. All about antioxidants, I tell you! 

The Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Resurfacing Micro Exfoliant ($55) smells like a spa (how does a spa smell? Well like divine herbs and relaxing!) and contains those little jojoba micro-particles that are great to scrub and also look very cool (black little dots)! ;-) 

The Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Exfoliating Peel-Spray ($49) is fun to do! I thought this is more of a peel (well, since it is called like that), but it is actually an awesome scrub! I don´t even get, how the particles get out of a spray can, but you literally spray it on your face and then you can rub it on your face and you will feel the wonderful grittiness! Absolutely love this!

OK: don´t get scared because of the "Illumination"- words like this are -at least for us oily girls -always a little scary. But this is a wonderful primer that prepares my skin beautifully for the foundation. Not a glitter party, just smoothed out skin. It contains Vitamin C and E and is not your typical primer but rather also a treatment that does good to your skin.

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Luminous Lip Crayon $22

I love lip crayons because they make it possible to apply the color more exact than lipsticks do (after the tip is used too often at least). The Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Lip Crayon also wins because of the fabulous ingredients as it contains Vitamin C and E and Jojoba oils. I tried the color "Malibu" which is a beautiful pink-nude color. Just a great color on a daily basis- not scream in your face. Natural and beautiful. 

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Flash Luminizer $32

OK, I admit I am not exactly a "highlight queen" and more often than not, I skip doing this step altogether, but I think the Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Flash Luminizer are quite adorable- also the packaging! They come in 3 colors- but each of them contain 2 colors on each side. So these look like a big lipstick tube, but then you can pull out a highlighter stick on each side! The pinks are also great as blushes. And as always: organic and absolutely fabulous ingredients! 

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Ultra Natural Mascara $22

The Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Ulta-Natural Mascara contains rose petal powder, argan shell powder and purple carrot extract! Wow´sers! The wand looked really interesting to me as it kinda spirals itself. The mascara provides a very natural lash-look.

And don´t forget: an apple a day: keeps the dermatologist away! ;-)
