Hello would you like a whole lot of Katie McGrath for the price of less Katie McGrath? Of course. But let me sell it to you anyway:
I've been having a miserable year and I'm about to have to refinance my credit card bill, which goes at about a 300% yearly interest rate.
Last year, right after one of my cats had passed from FeLV-related complications, another one of my cats was diagnosed with cancer and after a lengthy battle had to be euthanised in January. A couple months later my grandmother, who raised me for half my life, caught dengue fever during one of the worst epidemics in recent history in Brazil, and passed away after a coma. I caught it myself a week after her funeral, a particularly nasty hemorrhagic strain that minced my immune system. I caught covid, for the first time ever, right after. I had barely began to recover physically a couple months ago and my check-up returned 2nd degree AV blocks in my ECG, which I need to follow up with a specialist, and I've got RSI in my dominant wrist and a significant loss of cervical lordosis, which has been causing me migraines, pain and numbness and I need physiotherapy for. And then, last month, my 14 year old dog was also diagnosed with terminal cancer and is in palliative care.
Physical and psychological exhaustion snowballed, it's been really hard to work, then it got harder with generative AI, and I've been drowning in vet bills, doctors, labs, meds bills.
Fortunately (¿?) my currency is devalued 5:1 to the dollar, 7:1 to the pound, and 6:1 to the euro, so if just 15 people up there buy this bundle it will be enough to save me from financial ruin this year.
So if you can't afford it, please reblog so it finds those who can.
This is nearly every art of Katie McGrath I've done since 2012, a couple which aren't posted and you'll only find here, variations also exclusive to this bundle, sketches, linearts, old versions, pretty much everything I got.
Available on Gumroad and Ko-fi.
And if you're wondering who the everloving even is that, I've got other art you might like, or if you just wanna throw some change my way you can tip me on Ko-fi.
Like the Katie bundle, these art bundles come with high-res files you can print as you wish, plus everything else I have of them, sketches, process gifs, WIPs, unpublished, exclusive variations, old versions.
I try to give you the best bang for your buck :]
You can also get physical prints directly from inprnt.
❧ Site ❧ Linktree ❧ Gumroad ❧ Ko-fi ❧ INPRNT
Here's some more art you'll find on my stores, and thank you for reblogging! 🫀🗡️
#katie mcgrath#supercorp#supergirl#merlin#bbc merlin#artists on tumblr#human artist#small artist#OKAY let's try this again#tumblr put my other post on content moderation hell and I can't even get it blazed again no-one sees it#so everything's modesty blurred now#and I am once again asking you to reblog 🙏

Be careful what you wish for aka klarion follow up: the family starts to notice Jason isn’t quite the same after the soul-mending. Jason is less quick to anger sure but he’s also less quick to smile and in the field he’s much more efficient and is able to foil schemes but he’s much clinical, Alfred of course notices first, the kids next and Bruce is dismissive but getting more concerned, his powers are growing, and Klarion is disturbingly fascinated by Jason.
Anon, I am so sorry for taking so long on this one, needed to sit on it a bit;]
My initial idea was for Jason to finally wake up - but blank. Lights are on, but no one’s home:O And everyone is like OH NO, but Klarion (the resident necromancer expert on hand) is like, you fools, what did you expect? His soul just barely put itself together, it’s very tired and needs to regain strength. Are you jumping on a broken leg as soon as the bone mends?
It makes sense. Jay needs for his soul to get back to full strength, it needs some physiotherapy;]
Meaning - Jason spends a lot of time with Alfred, following him across the house and watching him clean and arrange things, he sits in Bruce’s office while the man works and spends time with Damian’s animals...
Until Steph can’t take it anymore and bundles him out to the city - against all the men left in the house - to go have some coffee and a doughnut, because sitting day in and day out in that stuffy old mansion isn’t good for anyone’s soul, especially one already weakened... It works. Jason is still blank and has to be led by the hand, but when Steph bites into a pastry and gets powdered sugar on her nose - he chuckles at her. And he chooses his own crossaint. And after a while of walking she lets him chose the paths and just follows... it’s a good outing. Especially when halfway through Klarion joins them (becuase no harlot will sway Jason!) and of course Tim appears - and the boys keep arguing and bickering, and being hilarious in her opinion;]
It takes a while, but Jason’s soul finally manages to regain it’s strength and Jay returns to being hismelf:)
...except then Bruce asks him to have a talk and he gets his ass busted for risking his life like that!!! :O

Julia & Cole, 6th Dec 2018, 9:15AM
This was written while waiting for my physiotherapy appointment at KK Hospital. (The wait time is always notoriously long so I needed to amuse myself.)
Julia’s finger glided across each word on the page as she read out the story to her daughter. Either the story or her voice must have caught the attention of little Tommy, who wobbled over decidedly. He peered over her shoulder - entranced by the princess’ unbelievably long, golden hair.
"Come back here, Tommy!" his father said sternly. Tommy looked over, blinked a couple times, and then directed his gaze back to the story. Not stern enough, Cole thought. Julia gave a bemused smile in his direction and continued reading.
Seated just 1 chair away, the two parents resembled the part of a perfect family. Mum and dad, daughter and son. It was nice to pretend for a while. Cole leaned in, as if intrigued by the story of Rapunzel himself. A gentle hint of lavender hit him. It was a comforting scent.
He was almost disappointed when the story ended.
“Come here Tommy,” he said again. Tommy hesitated for a moment, as if deciding if he was going to be good or naughty today. Cole sighed in relief when Tommy finally wobbled back over, a toothless grin on his face. Julia smiled bemusedly again. Cole stared in her direction, momentarily struck by how pretty her smile was. He also noticed the dark shadows under her eyes. She looked tired.
Shoot. He averted his eyes away hurriedly, but not before they made a brief moment of eye contact. Thank god the nurse entered at that moment and called out their call number. Hopefully she wouldn't think he was being weird, he thought, as he fumbled with the bags of groceries in one hand and Tommy in the other. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Did her eyebrows look okay? She thought they were particularly bushy today. As she was reading the story to Alyssa, she could feel his eyes on her. Was there something in her teeth? She made a quick attempt to slide her tongue over the front of her teeth. She had left the house in such a hurry this morning that she barely had time to fix up her hair, let alone conceal the dark eye circles she knew were making a guest appearance. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d gotten a good night’s sleep.
Shoot. The nurse must have called out his number because he picked up his groceries and left down the hallway with Tommy. She sighed. He probably had a beautiful wife waiting at home for him. It was nice to pretend for a while. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tommy’s physiotherapy session couldn't have lasted any longer. He held back the itch to see her again. She probably had some hunk of a husband greeting her with a bouquet of flowers when she got home. She seemed like the kind of woman who got that sort of treatment. When they finally left the OB gym, she wasn't there anymore.
"Come on Tommy, let’s buy some flowers." --------------------------------------------------------------------------- She pondered over the white lilies or yellow daisies.
Oh gosh, what was he doing here? Probably picking up flowers for his wife, she mused. He seemed like the kind of guy who did that sort of thing. She stared intently at the bouquet of flowers she held in each hand, acutely aware of his presence as he gradually moved deeper into the cramped flower store. She looked down at the flowers even further, surprised there wasn’t a hole burnt into them by this point.
“Those are pretty.”
She started, surprised by his sudden proximity. As she raised her head to look at him, she was struck by the alarming shade of green in his eyes. They were beautiful. It was then that she noticed a red crayon mark on his cheek - no doubt the work of Tommy and some unbelievably aggressive colouring in the waiting room beforehand. She stifled a laugh as she caught the mischievous glint in Tommy’s eye.
”You have some crayon on your face. Right here,” she pointed at her own left cheek. Her face cracked into a bemused smile, thinking to herself that the crayon mark made him cuter. To be honest, she was quite grateful for it. She wouldn’t have known how to start talking to him otherwise. She had been an awkward child growing up, and had never quite mastered the knack of holding conversations even well into adulthood. Her timid and reserved demeanour was something her ex-husband had resented and equal parts taken advantage of. She willed the bad memory away, focusing on the man standing in front of her, desperately wiping his cheek.
She stifled another laugh. How cute.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
If one could die of embarrassment, Cole wanted to right there and then. It was his first time approaching a woman since Lisa’s death, so of course, he had to have something on his face. After the cursed crayon stain (and quite possibly his skin underneath) had been well and surely rubbed off, Cole spoke again.
“Thanks for telling me. I swear my son thinks my face is a canvas sometimes,” Cole said, shaking his head at his son in mock anger.
“No problem. Red really isn’t your colour,” she joked.
“I’ll be sure he applies the blue next time,” Cole replied in fashion, a huge grin on his face.
"So are you visiting someone?” Cole asked.
“Oh um, no, I just like to get flowers for the house. They make me happy.”
“I do the same,” he replied softly, smiling at her.
At that smile, Julia felt her stomach do some serious acrobatics.
“The daisies are prettier, I think. But I might be biased because they’re my favourite flower,” he added. Crap, maybe admitting he had a favourite flower wasn’t the manliest thing he could have said.
“I think I like them better too. Daisies it is,” she said. Oh boy, could he get any cuter? Julia remembered when she had asked her ex-husband which flowers he liked better, to which he promptly scoffed and told her they all looked the same. She felt stupidly happy at the fact that the man in front of her had a favourite flower.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, the kids had already made each other’s acquaintance and were in the middle of a riveting game of Scissors, Paper, Stone.
“Aha! I win again! I’m the best!”
“No fair, I want a rematch!”
At the sounds of oncoming trouble, the two adults eventually peeled their eyes away from each other and to their children.
“Daddy, daddy! I’m the king of Scissors, Paper, Stone! I beat Susie 3 times!” Tommy exclaimed to his father gleefully, jumping up and down.
“I’m sorry, this one’s a handful,” Cole said apologetically.
“Don’t worry about it,” Julia replied, and then adding in quietly, “she always puts paper.”
Looking down at Susie’s pouting face and Tommy’s obnoxious bragging, they shared a private chuckle.
“I’m Cole, by the way. Nice to meet you.”
“Julia.”
Cole peered down at Julia’s left hand, trying to be discreet. No ring. He felt like the cat who got the cream. Alright, here goes nothing.
“Would you and Susie like to join us for breakfast? Tommy’s been demanding for a Happy Meal since he woke up.” Cole held his breath as he waited for her reply. “My treat,” he added quickly.
Julia was embarrassed at how happy his invitation made her. She’d done her own little inspection of his left hand and found no sign of a ring either. She could hardly believe it. She just hoped the blushing on her face wasn’t at a point of no return.
“We’d love to.”
And in that cramped flower store, they looked at each other, and smiled.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Julia stared at the bouquet of flowers in each hand. White lilies, or yellow daisies?
“Those are pretty.”
Hearing the deep voice next to her, Julia smiled.
“All done?” She asked.
“Yep,” he gave his wife a peck on the forehead.
She put the lilies down before walking over to the cashier, daisies in hand.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
“McDonalds time!” Tommy bellowed excitedly, grabbing his two sisters by their hands.
As they bundled out of the store, Julia and Cole turned to each other and shared another one of the many private smiles they’d had over the years. A smile that said they both knew they’d found what the whole world was searching for.
Julia, Cole, Tommy, Susie, and Daisy. They had their own perfect family.

#TeamWillow
Fictober19
Type: Fanfiction
Fandom: Homeland (TV Show)
Prompt #24: Patience... is not something I’m known for
Rating: G, No warnings apply
Characters: Peter Quinn, Willow (seizure response dog)
The story and the tags after the break-line. Lemme know if tagging bugs you. Or if you’d like to be tagged in the future. And thank you. ❤
The first time the mystery object brushes against the bottom of his jeans, it barely registers. Given how easily he gets distracted on an average day, he promptly dismisses it as another one of those sort-of-phantom-but-not-really-because-Andy-says-it-can’t-be sensations his affected side whomps up on occasion.
The truth is, he’s just too tired to look down. Fifteen years of covert operations, life in the shadow of days, weeks, even months of sleepless nights at a time, and he can honestly say he doesn’t remember himself feeling as worn to a frazzle as he does now.
Since he started on Prazosin the nightmares have gradually gone away. Not entirely, of course, but he hasn’t had one render him borderline catatonic in months. He’s been doing better. Not great - he’s not sure it’ll ever be ‘great’, or that it ever was, for that matter - but definitely better.
It wasn’t until Kim asked him during one of their sessions if his being ‘busy’ - as in ‘How’s it going?’ ‘Um… Busy, I guess’ - was a good thing that he realized, to his utter astonishment, that it was. That amongst hundreds of briefings, debriefings, missions, drinking himself into a near-stupor between missions, he doesn’t remember a single day that was, simply, busy. And that, even though between his job and the neverending succession of therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and every-other-fucking-kind-of-therapy-known-to-man, he sometimes feels thin, like butter scraped over too much bread (to quote Bilbo Baggins), he wouldn’t trade a single moment of it for the world.
In fact, right now, following a night shift at the Center and a particularly grueling physiotherapy session, he’s going on thirty six hours without sleep. His brain, fretted and discombobulated on a good day, feels like it’s barely holding structural integrity, let alone that of coherent thought. He’d tried to reschedule the interview, even considered giving it up altogether, but, in his condition, passing on an opportunity like this just wasn’t an option.
He struggles to keep his eyes open, not to mention follow the questions that seem incessant - a slow, systematic torture that’s starting to make the infamous 2003 interrogation in an Iraqi prison look more and more like a walk in the park.
“...currently involved in any illegal activity? Or were in the last year?”
Now this piques his interest. “Anyone ever answer ‘yes’?”
“I’m sorry, Mr Hayes. I know this is…” A bunch of meaningless, bureaucratic crap? “...tiresome. And may seem redundant.” No shit. “But I’m obligated to ask. And, if you’re hoping to be in the program, you need to answer.”
“I was not,” he concedes. Not in the *last* year. So not *really* a lie.
She’s right, he knows, this woman across the table whose name, for the life of him, he cannot recall. He needs this. In fact, he should’ve applied a lot sooner. Not just because having a seizure response dog may, at last, allow him to hold a legitimate driver’s license. And not just because it didn’t help his rehabilitation process when six months of work to improve the range of motion in his left arm went down the crapper following a nasty seizure-induced fall that shattered his left humerus in two places. But because if he doesn’t, one of these days the neighbor recruited to check on him several times a day will be too late. At which point, ironically, having survived being shot, stabbed, and gassed, he’ll finally meet his demise on the kitchen floor, drowned in his own drool.
“...the program is very intense, and, as such, can be quite demanding. Training takes time. Weeks. Months, in some cases. We can’t promise you quick results. But we guarantee that, provided you put in the due time and patience…”
Patience… is not something I’m known for.
Hot on the heels of the thought a wave of anxiety follows. He fucked it up. No, not past simple. He HAS BEEN fuckING it up, for as long as he can remember: every chance he was ever given, every iteration of ‘normal’ he ever had. What if…
Breathe, Kim’s voice whirs in his head. He swallows, counting to three before gradually letting the air funnel out. Then again. And once more. Until the numbness washes away and he’s prickling all over. You haven’t fucked THIS one up. Yet. So… shuddup and fucking BREATHE.
“...we highly advise those who eventually qualify make the necessary arrangements allowing them to actively participate in the process. Training an SRD is goal- and need-oriented. We can’t just tell a dog what to do when you have a seizure. And, as you probably know, seizures differ in frequency, type, and intensity. Once the training is complete, your SRD should not only be able to warn you of an upcoming seizure, but also provide assistance, or even call for help if necessary. So, obviously, the training cannot be done unless you’re a full participant for the entire duration of the program…”
There’s that same brushing sensation again. Except, this time it’s not against the sleeve of his jeans but lower, on top of his foot. And it’s not so much brushing as it is… stirring?
He looks down, eyes widening in awe. “Um… Miss…” What *was* her name?
“Yes?
“It’s… There’s a p-p-p…” A sure sign of his brain initiating the shutdown process.
“Problem? Look, I know this all sounds quite overwhelming. But I assure you, if you put in the necessary effort—”
“No. No. There’s a p-p-p…” he motions under the table, unable to stop grinning. “P-p.. small dog.”
With some effort, grabbing the side of the chair with his right hand, he shimmies away from the table. The ball of creamy-gold fluff on top of his sneaker stirs again, sleepily rearranging the tangle of chubby paws around his braced ankle.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry. Judi! Judi! Why is there… I’m sorry, could you give me a minute? Judi! There’s a puppy in the reception room!”
“That’s alright. I don’t mind,” he tries, reassuringly.
“It’s not that, sir. Judi! I’m so sorry, they’re not supposed to be here. They’re not even house trained yet. Oh my God, did it…?”
Finally, the side door opens and, mumbling apologies, Judi - he presumes - rushes in.
“Willow! My goodness, how’d you get in here, girl? I’m sorry, she’s a bit of a… here, lemme take her. Excuse me… Sir? Could you…? Your foot?”
“Oh. Sure.”
He moves further backwards. His foot, sliding from under the snuggly weight, causes the puppy to roll over with a soft, startled yelp.
The amusedly exasperated “There you are, you mischievous scamp” is followed by an abrupt “No! No! C’mere! Willow, you...! Oh, for God’s sake… I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Sir… do you mind?”
Bending down, he awkwardly reaches with his right hand behind his left ankle where what appears to be the feistiest golden retriever in the history of the breed is engaged in an out-and-out battle of ‘catch-me-if-you-can-bitch’ with her irked-out-of-her-mind keeper.
“Gotcha,” he smirks, deftly hooking his palm under the plush belly and emerging from under the table with a wriggling jumble of ears and limbs.
Held in front of his smile-dimpled face, a fierce twinkly-brown stare locked with his steely-blue, Willow lets out the tiniest, most defiant squeal of part-bark, part growl, part something-too-adorable-to-not-have-a-name he’s ever heard.
“Wow. Consider me scared,” he nods, genuinely impressed, tightening his grip as she wiggles harder, earning a narrow-eyed shake of his head. “You just don’t give up, do you?”
Something in his calm, measured tone renders her still for a moment. Moisture-sleek, pitch black nostrils flare. Once. Twice. And then, he feels her go limp in his palm, paws and earls slacking, head cocking puzzlingly to the side.
He lowers his voice. “That’s more like it. Now: care to say hello like a proper lady?”
Slowly, he moves his hand to his face until they’re nose to nose where, following a series of cautious sniffs, his gesture of good will is rewarded with a torrent of slobber so generous and enthusiastic, he’s forced to laughingly gather her to his chest instead.
“There,” he whispers, cradling her in the stiff, motionless fold of his left elbow and soothingly running his newly freed hand from the top of her head to the tip of her shimmering tail. “It’s nice to meet your acquaintance, Miss Willow. I’m Noah,” he adds.
And, for the first time since he was handed his new identity papers, the name he thought he'd never get used to folds on his tongue just right.
______________________
The woman across the desk blinks rapidly, as if trying to decide whether or not he’s joking, and, in case he’s not, which part of the protocol her job is outlined by should’ve prepared her for this.
“Mr Hayes, I’m sorry. But that’s - what you’re asking - it’s out of the question. It just… doesn’t work like that. We don’t - we can’t… you don’t just choose an SRD. At this age, we don’t even know if they have the ability. And even if we did, pairing an epilepsy dog with a potential candidate is an intricate process. There are factors that—”
“That what? I mean, how compatible do we have to be? It’s not like I’m asking you for her bone-marrow.”
She exhales in an attempt to regain her composure. “I realize that, sir. But, nevertheless, there are things to consider. Things that our specialists have been trained to take into consideration. I’m sorry. This is— unprecedented. The candidate can’t just walk in and choose a puppy. Which is why we usually…” shooting an accusatory glance in Judi’s direction, “...don’t even let the candidates see the dogs until one is assigned.”
“Fine. But how about a puppy choosing a candidate?” he quips, pointedly scratching behind the ears of the aforementioned puppy snuggled sleepily in the crook of his neck.
“A pu…? Mr Hayes, you can’t be serious.”
Quinn leans back, tilting his head so as to rest his cheek on top of the plush bundle. “Look. I understand. So, say she doesn’t have the… SRD gene, or whatever makes them qualify. Or we don’t… work together. It’s fine. I mean, it happens, right? Even with the “selection process”, it must happen on occasion. What do you do then?”
Finally back on familiar territory, Christie - it *is* Christie, isn’t it? - nods.
“Sir, we’re a private facility. One of the top in the world, as I’m sure you know. Candidates who choose our services are guaranteed a functioning SRD. Of course, like you say, it’s not an exact science, and some pairings don’t stick. Which is another reason why the selection process should be left to people who are qualified to perform it. But, if the pairing is unsuccessful, we offer a client a chance to repeat the process.”
“Which costs you money.”
“Yes. But that’s far from being our main concern. Like I said, the training program is quite demanding. Doing it twice is not in anyone’s best interest.”
Disregarding her last remark, Quinn presses on. “And the dogs? Those who don’t qualify?”
“Well, they are all purebred, so, we offer them up for sale to individuals or elite breeding houses.”
“There you go. I’ll make you a deal. I get Willow, right now—” Christie opens her mouth to protest but he raises a hand to stop her. “Just... hear me out. I get Willow. And, if it doesn’t work out, for whatever reason, I’ll pay for her. And I’ll pay to repeat the program.”
“Sir—”
“I fail to see the downside. I really do.”
“Well, for one, Willow is too young to be trained. Or even tested. It’ll be at least another six weeks.”
Quinn smiles.
It never ceases to strike him with awe how, sometimes, his fretted, disjointed, swiss-cheese of a brain just... snaps back. As if resetting to some kind of safe point, all of the stroke and sarin splintered parts shift and reshuffle, and, suddenly, every word he needs is just where it ought to be.
“Miss, I’ve applied for the program over six months ago, and have been on the waiting list for the past three. I was diagnosed with refractory epilepsy a year ago having tried every combination of anticonvulsants known to modern medicine; and a bunch of experimental ones. I’ve had two, three, sometimes up to five grand-mal seizures a month for almost two years now. I’m pretty damn sure I can wait six weeks.”
__________________
With Christie excusing herself in order to run the ‘this is highly irregular, sir, it really is, but I’ll see what I can do’ deal by her supervisor, and Judi retreating back to the breeding chambers, the room has grown quiet at last. It’s just the two of them now: Quinn, slumped back in the chair, eyes closed, and Willow, passed out on his chest, her wispy, feathery breaths tickling the side of his throat.
He feels himself melting away, losing cohesion. He could fall asleep like this, his cheek resting against the velvet of flopped ear, fingers buried deep in the thick of her fur. And, given the bargain he just made, he probably should.
Whatever it takes, he thinks, his mind skidding down the slope of exhaustion. Whatever it takes.
Like a pebble skipping across the lake of his memory, he’s suddenly at the Center, chatting with Jessie, last night’s admission: a fourteen-year old turned over to CPS by her case worker following a late night raid the DEA made on her fifth foster home in two years.
“Ok, I can tell you. But it’s like a total spoiler.”
He arched a skeptical brow. “#TeamLannister? A total spoiler?”
“Hey. It’s GoT, alright? Everything’s a spoiler.”
“Fine. Spoil away,” he sighed, tossing her a new set of bed sheets.
She went on to tell him a long, elaborate story of a big battle involving dwarves (or was it just one dwarf), dragons, “dragon-wasting” ballistas, some “BAMF” knight called - he wants to say James(?) - and, well, a “buttload” of other spoilers of which he understood very little; and remembers even less. Not to mention the fact that he never did get the answer as to what #TeamLannister - printed in block letters across her t-shirt - means.
“Hey, we’re a team now.” He nuzzles the wisp of spikes just above Willow’s ear as she stirs and burrows deeper into his neck. “#TeamQuinn?” A snort. “Ok. #TeamHayes?” A sleepy whimper. “What? #TeamNoah?”
Suddenly, there’s Christie’s voice in his head again. “...provided you put in the due time and patience…”
Patience… is not what I’m known for, he remembers thinking. And he shakes his head, smiling. Not something Peter Quinn was known for. Nor “John”, or “David”, or “Nathan”, or any of them, for that matter.
Noah Hayes, though? He chuckles. The jury’s still out.
Jolted awake by the bounce of his chest, Willow emerges from under his chin, big, droopy eyes blinking in sleepy daze.
“Hey you,” he laughs, poking the tip of her nose with the tip of his.
And, as she scrambles higher, curling her head in the crook of his neck with a long, joyful sigh, he just knows: for as long as it takes, wherever this road leads, and whatever the cost - from now on, it’s #TeamWillow.

In 2014, NJPW released a few short documentaries on World, before Wrestle Kingdom 9. They were all released in versions with and without english subtitles; this is my transcription of the english subtitles on part one of Hiroshi Tanahashi’s. I’ve done this before with plain screencaps interspersed but I wanted to redo it with .gifs, ‘cos I really love these little videos, and ‘cos I can now, and also, just ‘cos. :)
This is Part 2. Part 1 is here.
Teaser:
Question: What if Tanahashi Jr. became a pro wrestler?!
HT: “Well, right now he plays soccer. When I ask him if he wants to be a pro wrestler, he answers ‘No way!’ When I ask why, he says, ‘It looks like it hurts.’ It certainly does.
Q: “What if he does become a pro wrestler?”
HT: “Well, then the second coming would happen this century.”
(the little opening sequence plays; the theme of Tana’s documentary is Tana’s passion for wrestling and his love for the fans)
Caption: 1.4 Towards Tokyo Dome
HT: “I love the Tokyo Dome but I’m not convinced yet. To explain why, you’ve got these great crowds at Korakuen Hall and Ryogoku but so many more people come to the Dome, right? The crowd at the Dome get up and go crazy for great matches that I watched when I was a fan. Like the 10.9 show or Inoki’s retirement match, that reaction is what I want to draw out.”
Caption: November 20th, Gold’s Gym, Shinjuku, Tokyo. Tanahashi continues training towards 1.4
(we’re inside Gold’s Gym, watching Tana go through his workout)
HT: “The target is 300. Six days a week to reach that goal. I did it two years in a row but last year I only did 291. This year is shot. (he leans on a railing, sighing at the tragedy of it all) Even if I work hard from now on I won’t make 300. I’ll do 3-A-Days!”
Caption: How to make time
HT: “You have to manage your time wisely. So, when I’m out doing local promoting I always carry my workout gear and a change of clothes with me. And so, if I get like a 2 hour break, I ask our staff where the gym is and just go there. Footwork is really important. And then I’ll appear on TV or radio soaked in sweat. (laughs)”
(more of Tana working out)
Caption: Training outstanding talent
HT: “Of course, I want to be bigger. In a short term, I train hard to increase flexibility. Then I add more muscle mass.”
Caption: Ideal Body
HT: “For me, it’s the Dynamite Kid. If I could get a body like his, I want to be like that. That was number one.”
Q: Have you gotten close to having a body like the Kid?
HT: Not even close. The Kid in his prime, he had big shoulders and huge traps, also he was just so quick. I don’t have that kind of body yet. I’ve still got a way to go.
Caption: A peek at his strict eating habits
(Tana buys a little bento box at the counter and sits down at a window seat for lunch)
Q: “Tanahashi, what’s this?”
HT: “This is Gold Gym’s chicken breast boxed lunch. Brown rice, boiled chicken breast and broccoli. It’s really good. And healthy.”
(he breaks his hashi up, briefly clasps his hands together and says “Itadakimasu,” then starts eating)
Q: “This is your lunch?”
HT: “Yes”
Q: “You’re pretty strict about your eating habits, right?”
HT: “There’s a difference when you’re being strict and when you’re not. You can feel it in your body right away. I really like sweets, and there are times I eat at night, but…building your body is a gradual process. You just have to keep at it. So you can eat something bad one day, and still be ok. Changes take place over time, both good and bad.”
Caption: Meals during national tours
HT: “During national tours…I don’t eat much at night. At company dinners I eat selectively. Like edamame or lean sashimi. When there’s just convenience stores, then my go-to food is canned mackerel. I just eat them one after another. I can’t stop. (laughs)”
Q: “Is ramen completely out of the question? Do you like ramen?”
HT: “I love ramen and I want to eat some. I crave them! But it’s ok. The Dome is waiting.”
Caption: Bodybuilding for 1.4
HT: “I always strive to be in my best shape for the Dome…and whatever nerves I get, I put to use. I have to or else. I bundle up all my feelings and take the to the Dome, where I release them.”
Caption: Tanahashi’s 1.4 has already started.
(Tana walks out of the gym.)
Caption: to the town of Omotesand?
Caption: Enjoying a little free time
HT: “I used to go shopping a lot when I was younger, but now it’s just rarely. I love shopping, but, it takes too long, it takes twice as long as other people. And they never have my size. (laughs)”
(It’s raining again - Tana is standing out in it with his umbrella, eating a protein bar. “Gotta get my fix,” he says)
Caption: It started raining so we headed to a special place.
Caption: November 20th, Rela Quwa Omotesando
(Tana enters some kind of medical office, probably a physiotherapy place, various greetings. Inside, he’s seated filling out forms, and answering the doctor’s questions)
HT: “My neck is bad.”
Doctor: “Yes”
HT: “In my neck and waist…I can barely turn my neck.”
(the doctor, Hiroki Mihara, makes hmmm noises, and asks about injuries)
HT: “Some fractured bones in my hand. My knuckles, both right and left cross ligaments, and front and back ligaments too (indicating his knees)”
HM: “I see. Anything else?”
HT: “Last August, I injured my neck really badly, but it’s better. There’s something near the base of my head that works like a catch and must be forcibly reset each time.”
HM: “Were you dropped?”
HT: “From really high up, it was bad. (chuckles)”
HM: “Yes. So mostly the neck?”
HT: “Yeah, and my back is stiff in the morning. It feels like it might pop when I get up slowly.”
(quick cut. Absent his coat, Tana sits on the exam table with a pained look while the doctor examines & manipulates his back. Some movements must be painful, because Tana’s grimacing and hissing.)
HM (about the alignment of his back): “This is straight.”
HT: “So it’s off, to the left.”
HM: “Yeah”
HT: “I didn’t realize.”
HM (checking his shoulders): “The shoulders are off, too.”
HT: “Now that you mention it...”
HM (turning Tana): “It goes this way.”
HT: “So it seems.”
HM (indicating right): “This side. (he manipulates Tana’s left arm) You need to stretch more.”
HT: “My left shoulder is really bad, the right is still ok.”
HM (checking Tana’s right shoulder): “Yes, so it seems. What about your neck?”
HT: “Both sides really hurt.”
HM: “With your shoulders like this…(indicating a position)...your neck is straight.”
HT: “Really? (he makes a “Yeeeech” noise)”
HM: “It really is yes. Do this and you can move.”
HT: “I see.”
HM (indicating Tana’s troublesome left shoulder): “Let’s do this shoulder.”
HT: “Yes please.”
Caption: Toward 1.4 making the condition of his injured body as good as possible.
(Tana is flat out on the exam table while the doctor works on his limbs)
HM: “Your muscles are great.”
HT (muffled, he’s on his stomach while the doctor works on his back): “They’re too soft.”
HM: “Piable.”
(Question from a NJPW staffer, until now silent): “Big difference?”
HM: “Yes, completely different. Comparing top athlete’s muscles to others, even though they’re soft, they’re more pliable, which means they respond easily to loosening. Your muscles will loosen up right away. If your muscles were more rigid, you’d get much stiffer quickly. And your joints are much looser than I expected.”
HT (still muffled): “Many people think that pro wrestlers aren’t that flexible.”
(time passes, Tana is on his back now while the doctor tends to his left shoulder. When we pan up to his face, he looks both like he’s in slight pain and like he’s on a one way magic carpet ride to Blisstown, population: Tanahashi)
HT: “Amazing, I feel it…”
HM: “I can move it now.”
HT (indicating with his right arm for comparison): “Before it only moved to here.”
HM: “I’m surprised you could move it.”
HT: “But it’s fixed now.”
HM: “It’s been a long time.”
HT: “Yes it was. It hurt so bad. I could hardly move it by myself. It even hurt just to stretch it.”
Caption: The injured body
(Tana is on his side while the doctor works his right shoulder hard. He’s not in Blisstown anymore; I guess the right wasn’t as ok as he thought)
HT (voiceover, after the session): “When you are performing for others, you have to possess this inner strength. When people come to see you perform, as a pro wrestler, there is this desire to make them happy and enthusiastic. You have to perform despite the pain.”
HM (while working on Tana’s neck): “There are some pro wrestlers who continue on even while injured.”
HT: In fact, I had to continue wrestling after suffering whiplash. It was in the big tournament this summer, I went on even though I couldn’t move my neck.”
(transcriber’s note: fuck you, Fale!)
HM: “I’ll do your neck thoroughly.”
(shots of the session continue while Tana does another voice over. He has a sizable scar on his left elbow, probably from some surgery or other)
Caption: Body care of a 38 year old
HT: “When I was younger, I’d hit the gym without any preparation. But as I got older, I started stretching before and after. Also, this might sound strange, but while showering after finishing my workout, I would say ‘thank you’ to my muscles as I washed my body. (he starts to laugh)”
(the session concludes. Tana is stretching experimentally, testing his restored mobility)
HM: “You were in bad shape, especially on your left side, but you’ll feel better now.”
HT: “I see.”
HM: “To be honest, your whole body was out of line, but another (session) or two and you’ll be fine.”
HT (smiling, knowing he’ll probably delay too long the next time too): “I’ll come again.”
(Tana takes a selfie with the doc, because of course he does)
Caption: Suddenly, an outstanding talent comes…
(a Very Tall Kid walks in. One of the clinic staff, he’s 22 years old and 6'2. Tana looks like all his christmasses have come at once, and immediately goes into Recruitment Mode.)
HT: “New Japan is recruiting new members, so come!”
(the kid starts to laugh)
HM: “He’s 6'2, definitely.”
HT: “He’ll get bigger.”
HM: “You’re only 22, right?”
(the kid nods, he’s past speaking for a moment but grinning incandescently at Tana. He kinda reminds me of Okada a bit, the way he’s grinning & giggling)
The Kid: “Yes. I want to bodybuild.”
HM: “Start with bodybuilding. You can always do both, so start with that.”
HT: “Amazing! 6'2 is really tall for a Japanese.”
The Kid, to Tana: “Do I have to be your size?”
HT: “You are big enough now.”
(Tana takes a selfie with The Kid, because of course he does)
(outside again)
Caption: January 4, 2015; Standing on the main stage of the Tokyo Dome 5 years in a row.
HT: “I feel like New Japan Pro Wrestling…is riding on my shoulders. ‘I love you four years in a row.’ is what I want to continue. Until I’m told, it’s enough.”
Caption: VS Okada Kazuchika
HT: “What makes Okada so great and popular nowadays is, like me, we have this great connection with our fans. And Okada’s motto has always been ‘Keep evolving!’ Okada’s popularity is already staggering, so facing someone like Tanahashi may not be enough for Okada. What can I do? Evolve. I will evolve. Okada and the fans want that. What can I do to make pro wrestling more exciting? Be stronger and outrageous. If we make pro wrestling interesting, its popularity will continue to grow…”
Caption: 1.4 The Moment of victory
HT (hums for a second): “In kanji, ‘bliss’ is written with ‘climax’ and ‘good fortune.’ I wonder…for a wrestler it’s the peak. Realizing your dreams of becoming a champion, in a place like the Tokyo Dome, and saying “I love you all,” that is bliss. To go far beyond the confines of the Tokyo Dome, doing what I love as a pro wrestler, I want to continue to savor new and exciting experiences for years to come.”

What Are The Special Needs Of New Born Babies?
Finally! The day has arrived and you are taking your new born baby home! You are excited, thrilled, scared and worried – in equal measure. Will you drop the baby in the bath water? This sounds funny but isn’t! The number of new mothers who stress about dropping their baby is legion. But, there are other things, that will come very naturally to you. And some things you’ll find incomprehensible and scary. So, here’s a check list that covers the needs of your bundle of joy – and what you need to do to satisfy them.
How To Hold Your Baby
You might feel that your baby is fragile and delicate but don’t be scared to touch, caress, handle or hold your baby. Research has proven that babies who are held more than two hours a day thrive more and cry much less. Since the baby’s neck muscle take a little time to develop, you will need to support your baby’s head whenever you pick her up.
Bathing Your Baby
This is one of the biggest challenges for a new mother. Before you start, make sure all the bathing supplies are at hand. Use gentle cleansers, shampoo and soap. Give your baby a gentle massage before the bath with baby oil. Studies have shown that a massage can relax your baby, improve the baby’s sleep patterns and calm her down when she gets irritable. Giving your baby a massage is also a great way to bond with your baby. And use baby lotion after you have dried your baby out with soft baby towels or linen. Don’t be afraid to gently wash the soft spot, called fontanels, on your baby's head.
Diaper Issues
Don’t be surprised by the number of diaper changes your baby will require. To reduce stress and make life easier, keep plenty of diapers in stock. For the delicate skin of your new born baby, and especially given the heat and humidity of the Indian climate, it is advisable that cotton or linen diapers are used. Disposable diapers should be used while travelling or for visits away from home. Be prepared for nappy rash. Most babies develop diaper rash between 0-2 years of age. If you see any signs of redness, apply a safe zinc oxide based cream on the diaper area. Keep the area clean and as dry as far as possible.
Cry Baby!
Babies do cry – some of them quite frequently, too. Most babies cry for an average of two hours a day, in the first three months. This is quite normal. It’s not that the baby is sick or anything! Of course, you’ll want to comfort your baby but you also need to know why she is crying. Is your baby hungry? Does the diaper need to be changed? Is the baby sleepy? Is the baby too excited by external stimuli such as lights or noise? To soothe and comfort your baby, hold her to your shoulder while gently rocking her. Sing or speak softly while you rub her back, gently. Try different positions to calm and soothe your baby.
Sleepy Times!
Your baby’s sleep patterns will change as she grows. Newborns sleep a lot right through the 24-hour day, waking up often – both day and night. However, you can still begin to develop a bedtime routine for your baby, as early as six to eight weeks. As your baby grows she will start to combine her sporadic naps into a full night’s sleep with fewer daytime “naps.” You can help her slowly develop a sleeping pattern; you can encourage her to recognize that night time is for sleep, not for play.

tobywmhauser:
Biting his lip slightly, Toby looked down at his leg. It healed a lot faster than it should have, but he had no idea at what speed a werewolf would heal. In reality, he should have had potentially multiple surgeries and months of physiotherapy before he’d be back on his feet. Toby scoffed and said “He probably had more than that,” under his breath.
Toby had barely released he was being gently ushered to the van. He noted the ‘Oh’ when the Cardero fellow must have clicked with the name, and wondered what it was his sister had gotten up to. He never would have pictured his big sister in a police uniform, but he thought to himself that she was bossy enough. “If you don’t mind, I think I’ll call her myself. You know, because the fact that you’ve been in contact before doesn’t bode well for you,” Toby said, hoping he wasn’t a part of a missing person’s case or something. “It’s Toby. Yes, Toby Hauser,”
Iann caught the muttering and grinned. “How’d it even happen?” he asked, feeling all chummy with Toby now that he was bundling the werewolf into his van. So he started with the questions. He drove them to Mal Ojo, which was a 3-storey brick building in Grieselle. Inside the main floor looked like the remains of a shop that had been shut down for months - which was precisely what it was. Old occultish knick-knacks like crystals and little potion bottles and jars of herbs and other odd things lined the rather dusty shelves. Piles of books gathered in the corners, where Iann had spread out his work into the shop now that he didn’t use the storefront that much any longer.
But Iann took Toby to the backroom, which used to be shelves of stock items but was mostly now just a large workshop for Iann’s projects and experiments, and of course the garage side for fixing his van. It was definitely all a little eccentric, not that Iann noticed any more.
“Alright, let’s take a look at that bite,” Iann said, switching on a bright lamp and patting a stool for Toby to sit. “You’ve been feeling anything else? Fever? Hunger for anything specific? Hearing improved? Or smell?”
He looked up at Toby with a slight smile. “Doesn’t bode well for me, specifically, or just ‘you’ in general? Anyway, pleased to meet you Toby Hauser.”
A Place to Rest | open starter
#tobyhauser#ahahaha!!#Iann thought Mickey was a god to be worshiped#and got all evangelical about it#AND VON BODY CHECKED HIM TO THE GROUND#it was great#Shivonne is the best XD XD

Can Mindfulness Meditation Really Reduce Pain and Suffering by 90 percent? – Mindfulness: Finding Peace in a Frantic World | Mindfulness: Finding Peace in a Frantic World
Claire stared at the computer screen before cocking her head slightly to one side. She winced as a sharp pain angled its way through her neck and down her left arm. Her fingers went numb and then began to throb. Claire’s youthful good looks dissolved and she suddenly looked twenty years older. She stretched her arm and slowly began rubbing her neck to loosen the muscles. Her shoulders and neck had cramped up, making her whole upper body look tense and contorted. She reached for a glass of water and gulped down two more painkillers.
Why won’t this pain just stop? Why won’t these blasted painkillers work any more? They’re useless. I’m so sick and tired of this.
Three years previously Claire had been injured in a car crash and suffered two broken ribs, a fractured wrist and whiplash. Her ribs and wrist had healed completely within three months, but the after-effects of her whiplash refused to go away. The doctors were puzzled by her pain. Several scans had shown that her neck had completely healed, but the pain stubbornly remained. It was worse if she stayed in one place for too long. After twenty minutes, sharp jagged pains would arc up and down her neck. When she finally did move, she would feel stiff and achy all over.
Claire felt increasingly trapped and broken. Her doctor had prescribed several courses of physiotherapy without any long-term success. Now she was forced to continually take painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. They worked, more or less, but often left her feeling washed out and jaded. They were OK for stubborn ‘achiness’, but did nothing for the frequent sharp twinges of pain. Lately, her doctor had begun suggesting antide- pressants to lift her mood. Her response was always the same: ‘I’m not depressed,’ she’d snap. ‘I’m angry because that man who drove into me has taken my life away. I used to dance all night. Now I can barely walk!’
Experiences like Claire’s are not confined to injuries such as whiplash, but are common across a range of diseases. Conditions such as ‘bad back’, migraine, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia can all cause pain long after the original injuries have healed or without any obvious cause that shows up on scans or tests. And even when there is a clear physical cause, as with illnesses like arthritis, heart disease or cancer, the pain often comes and goes without any apparent rhyme or reason. Doctors then feel forced to prescribe long-term courses of painkillers, but these can have side effects such as memory loss, lethargy and even addiction.
Claire and millions of others exist in a world of suffering; a place where even the simplest of tasks can amplify their pain. This often leads to anxiety, stress, depression and exhaustion, each of which serves to further enhance suffering in a downward spiral. Such vicious cycles are driven by newly discovered psychological forces that underlie the perception of pain. And crucially, this discovery offers a wholly new approach to the management of pain and illness that has the potential to transform suffering.
WHAT IS PAIN?
The commonsense view of pain is that it arises from damage to the body. This attitude was formalised in the seventeenth century by the French philosopher René Descartes with his ‘rope-pull’ model of pain: just as pulling a rope in a church steeple rings a bell, Descartes thought that damage to the body is a tug that causes the awareness of pain in the brain. For centuries after Descartes, doctors regarded pain in a similar light. The intensity of pain was thought to be directly proportional to the degree of damage to the body, which would mean that if different people had the same injury they would experience the same amount of pain. If no obvious physical cause was found, the patient would be regarded as malingering or making it up.
Since the 1960s, science has come to accept another model of pain known as the ‘Gate Theory’ developed by Ronald Melzack and Patrick Wall.1 They suggest that there are ‘gates’ in the brain and nervous system that, when open, allow you to experience pain. In a sense, the body sends a continuous low-level ‘chatter’ of pain signals to the brain, but it is only when the gates are opened that the signals reach your conscious mind. These gates can also close, which is what happens when your pain lessens or fades away. Opening and closing these pain gates is a phenomenally complex process. Although the details are still being worked out, it is clear that pain is far more subtle and complex than the traditional idea of damage signals being sent to the brain which are then passively felt. Pain is a sensation, which means that it is an interpretation made by the brain before it is consciously felt. To make this interpretation, the brain fuses together information from the mind as well as the body. In practice, this means that the thoughts and emotions flowing through your mind, both conscious and unconscious, have a dramatic effect on the intensity of your suffering. Not without reason did the ancient Greek philosophers consider pain to be an emotion.
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SUFFERING
Suffering occurs on two levels. Firstly, there are the actual unpleasant sensations felt in the body – this is known as ‘Primary Suffering’. This can be seen as the ‘raw data’ that is sent to the brain from, say, an injury, an ongoing illness or changes to the nervous system itself (this is believed to lie, at least partly, behind such conditions as chronic pain syndrome and phantom limb syndrome). Overlaid on top of this is ‘Secondary Suffering’, which is made up of all the thoughts, feelings, emotions and memories associated with the pain. These might include anxiety, stress, worry, depression and feelings of hopelessness and exhaustion. The pain and distress that you actually feel is a fusion of both Primary and Secondary Suffering.
This insight is crucial because it reveals a path away from suffering. For if you can learn to tease apart the two flavours of suffering, you can greatly reduce – or even eliminate – your pain and distress. This is because Secondary Suffering tends to dissolve when you observe it with the mind’s compassionate eye. Mindfulness allows you to see the different elements of pain laid out in front of you. And when you see this vista, something remarkable begins to happen: your suffering gradually begins to subside and evaporate like the mist on a summer’s morning.
It’s important to understand that although the sensation of pain is created by the mind, your suffering is still real. You really do feel it. It exists and it can be genuinely overwhelming. But once you understand the underlying mechanisms of pain, you can begin to temper its power and the hold it has over you.
To go back to Claire, had she been asked to look inside herself a little more closely she would have realised that there was not one single ‘thing’ that she could label as an ‘ache’ or as a ‘pain’. Both were ‘bundles’ of different feelings that were constantly changing; becoming either more or less intense. There was the underlying unpleasant ‘tightness’ of the muscles and tendons in her neck, which were twisting her vertebrae slightly out of alignment and creating the most pronounced of her painful feelings. There were also twinges of outright pain – which felt like sharp spikes of electricity running through her muscles and down into her arm. And then there were patches of ‘numbness’ in her left arm and hand. These would alternate with pins and needles. Those were the obvious sensations of pain. This was her Primary Suffering.
But there were other feelings too – powerful emotions and disturbing thoughts that would frequently sweep across her mind, often with no apparent rhyme or reason. Stress, worry and exhaustion had become a way of life. Troubling thoughts constantly nagged at her soul: Why won’t this just stop? The doctors must have missed something, surely? Maybe I’m going to end up a cripple, or even dead. Are they too afraid to tell me? Such thoughts and emotions were constantly bubbling away in the background. And while they were often less obvious than the nagging feelings of pain, ultimately they were far more significant because they were central to the way that her mind interpreted and felt the raw feelings of pain. In a sense, they controlled the intensity or ‘volume’ of her pain. This was Secondary Suffering; and Claire had it in spades.
Claire’s Secondary Suffering had its roots in the five days she spent in hospital after her accident. They were the worst of her life. She was in considerable pain and on a morphine drip for the first twenty-four hours. She could cope with the physical pain – just. Far worse, however, were her turbulent emotions: her fears and worries for herself and the future. Neither she nor the doctors could predict the outcome of her neck injuries. Would she be partially paralysed? Would she be in pain for the rest of her life? There was also a sense of anger mixed with bitterness. The man who crashed into her didn’t appear to care. He just walked away from the accident with no cuts or bruises at all. He’d been drinking, but was just inside the legal drink–drive limit. Was he insured? It turned out he wasn’t. Every time she thought about it, Claire’s anger boiled over. Such thoughts and overwhelming emotions constantly washed across her mind. It was mental pain and just as real and tormenting as her physical injuries.
She lay in her hospital bed at night crying quietly to herself. She was wracked with fears and worries for the future, and ‘what ifs’ filled her mind. If only she had left home a minute or two later, then none of it would have happened. She’d had a feeling something was wrong before she had left home. Why hadn’t she waited just a few minutes longer?
After the accident and the subsequent months of physiotherapy, a new emotion was added to the list: depression. Claire refused to believe that she was depressed, but it was there none the less, gnawing away at her in the background. It wasn’t an all- consuming depression. It simply drained her of all energy and enthusiasm for life. Such powerful emotions as anxiety, fear, anger, worry and depression can feed into the mind’s perception of pain. Other feelings, too, can have an incredibly strong effect. Feeling tired and overwhelmed, fragile and broken, stressed and anxious, can all magnify suffering and tip you into a downward spiral. How often has the intensity of your suffering increased when you felt anxious, stressed, exhausted or sad? These emotions act like amplifiers in the mind’s pain circuits. They can open the floodgates of suffering.
The effect of such emotions can be observed with a brain scanner. Work at Oxford University,7 for example, shows the significant impact that even mild levels of anxiety can have on pain. Scientists at the university’s Department of Clinical Neurology induced low-level anxiety in a group of volunteers before burning the back of their left hand with a hot probe. As anxiety built, you could see the waves of emotion sweeping through the volunteers’ brains. This primed areas of the brain that collectively make up the ‘pain matrix’. It was almost as if the volunteers’ minds were turning up the volume on their pain amplifiers ready to ‘hear’ its first ‘notes’, so that they could take action to protect themselves. This meant that when the skin of the anxious volunteers was actually burned, they experienced far more pain and suffering than the ‘non-anxious’ volunteers. You could see this extra pain represented in the brain scans too. As the Oxford neuroscientists noted, anxiety primes the ‘behavioural responses that are adaptive to the worst possible outcome’. In other words, anxiety and other powerful ‘negative’ emotions prepare the body to sense pain quickly and with great intensity.
The reverse is also true. Reducing anxiety, stress, depression and exhaustion can lower the perception of pain and even eliminate it completely. This is one of the main routes by which mindfulness helps reduce suffering. Mindfulness soothes the mind’s perception of pain – essentially Secondary Suffering – by replacing it with a sense of peace and wholeness.
Neuroscientist Fadel Zeidan and his team at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in America decided to investigate this effect using scanners to map activity in different parts of the brain.8 They did this by exploiting a curious quirk of brain anatomy. Every part of the body is reflected in a specific part of the brain known as the primary somatosensory cortex. So if the sole of your left foot is brushed with a feather, an area of the primary somatosensory cortex lights up; if you feel a pain in your lower back, a different part becomes active. Neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield charted this brain region and produced a ‘map’ that reflects the human body overlaid on the brain (see illustration below). It was termed the cortical ‘homunculus’.
Fadel Zeidan and his team reasoned that if mindfulness affected the perception of pain, then this should be visibly reflected in the level of activity in the corresponding regions of the primary somatosensory cortex. To test this, Zeidan studied the perception of pain in a group of students. The students first had the back of their right calf burned with a piece of hot metal while their brain was scanned with the latest functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scanner. Each was then asked to rate both the intensity and unpleasantness of the pain. If pain was music, ‘intensity’ would be the volume and ‘unpleasantness’ would be the level of emotion it aroused. As expected, when the students’ legs were burned the ‘right calf’ region of their primary somatosensory cortex lit up as the pain swept over them.
The students were then taught mindfulness meditation and the experiment was repeated. The results could not have been more different second time around. Activity in the ‘right calf’ region of the primary somatosensory cortex had diminished to such a degree that it had become undetectable. But not only that. Meditation increased activity in regions of the brain related to the processing of emotion and of cognitive control – areas where the sensations of pain are actually interpreted and ‘built’. These brain areas modulate the sensations of pain and give it ‘meaning’ before it is consciously felt. What’s more, experienced meditators (those who scored higher on a standard scale of mindfulness) tended to have enhanced activity in these regions and to experience less pain. That is, they tended to devote more brain power in this region to moderating the pain-related information – and to, in effect, turning down its ‘volume’.
Zeidan’s co-worker Dr Robert C. Coghill explains:
These areas all shape how the brain builds an experience of pain from nerve signals that are coming in from the body. Consistent with this function, the more that these areas were activated by meditation, the more that pain was reduced. One of the reasons that meditation may have been so effective in blocking pain was that it did not work at just one place in the brain, but instead reduced pain at multiple levels of processing.
And what of the students’ conscious experience of pain? On average they experienced a 40 per cent reduction in pain intensity and a 57 per cent lessening of pain ‘unpleasantness’. Perhaps the most surprising thing was the amount of practice required to achieve this level of pain relief: just four training sessions of twenty minutes each. Remarkable though these results were, they masked something even more intriguing. The more accomplished meditators suffered far less than these averages might suggest. They experienced a reduction in pain intensity of 70 per cent and its unpleasantness was reduced by 93 per cent. This meant that it could barely be felt and hardly bothered them at all. Overall, said Zeidan, mindfulness produced a greater reduction in pain than standard doses of morphine and other pain-relieving drugs.
Loosening the bonds of pain
Secondary Suffering can be seen as resistance to pain. It is entirely natural to struggle against and resist pain with all of your might. You want to eliminate it. Stamp on it. Do anything at all to get rid of it. This is absolutely understandable. But what if this was also precisely the wrong approach? What if, in your bid to eliminate pain, you were actually creating far more of it instead? This is the lesson from Zeidan’s research and from many other studies too. And this holds true not just for pain, but for many other disease symptoms as well. Stress, exhaustion and depression can all be made far worse through resistance.
But if the act of resisting pain can make it worse, the converse is also true. Acceptance of your pain can actually diminish it – and might even get rid of it completely. Allow us to explain this seemingly outrageous idea. Neuroscientists have a saying: ‘What we resist persists.’ In other words, if you resist the messages that your mind and body are sending you, those messages will keep on being dispatched (and felt) until you accept them. This holds true not only for messages of pain, but also for thoughts, feelings, emotions, memories and judgements. If you mindfully accept (or feel) these messages, they will have done their job and will tend to melt away of their own accord.
Mindfulness meditation creates a sense of safety, of space, in which you can begin to tentatively explore the raw sensations of pain and, as such, it is the vehicle through which you can begin to accept these messages. And when you do so, you will often find that pain waxes and wanes quite dramatically. There can be long moments of normality followed by flickers or spikes of pain. There are often different sensations too. Some are hot. Others cold. Some feel ‘tight’, others throb, while still others feel sharp or stabbing. Not all are completely unpleasant. The different sensations often rise and fall like the waves on the sea. They constantly change in character and intensity. By exploring each of these different sensations, moment by moment, you come to accept that they are like black clouds in the sky: you can watch as the sensations arise, drift past and disappear again. Your mind is like the sky and individual thoughts, feelings, emotions and sensations are like different types of cloud. So in a sense, mindfulness teaches you to observe the weather without becoming embroiled in it. And no matter what happens, the sky – your mind – remains untouched by it.
It is important to realise that mindful acceptance is not resignation to your fate. It is not the acceptance of the unacceptable. It is simply the acceptance of the situation as it is, for now, at least. It is a period of allowing, of letting be, of non-resistance, so that you cease to struggle. And when this struggle ceases, a sense of peace takes its place. Secondary Suffering then progressively diminishes. Often as not, Primary Suffering will begin to do so too.
We can explain this to you in minute detail. We can cite numerous scientific trials that prove the point. We could even show you scans of your own brain as it ‘builds’ the sensations of pain from all of your thoughts, feelings and emotions – but only when you have experienced the power of mindfulness for yourself will you truly believe it.
This is why it is called a practice. Accepting pain can be difficult. It’s just better than the alternative, which is to live in a state of perpetual suffering.
Countless participants on our Breathworks courses have discovered this for themselves. Claire was one. She found that when her neck began to hurt she was also assailed by fear, anger, stress, sorrow, hopelessness, despair and exhaustion. So not only did she feel the initial unpleasant sensations in her neck, but she was also swamped with yet more suffering. It was almost as if she was struck with an arrow, and when she reacted to it she was then hit by a second one. Now she had to bear the pain of two arrows – that from the second being caused by resistance to the first. It is an entirely natural response. In fact, in cases of acute, rather than chronic, pain, it might even be the best response because it’s a powerful driving force to take yourself out of danger. When it comes to chronic pain and illness, however, it is often precisely the wrong solution because it simply compounds your suffering. And, of course, it can then seem as if you’re pierced not by two arrows, but by many, many more.
Accepting the sensations of Primary Suffering allows the Secondary Suffering to take care of itself – and to progressively diminish. Claire discovered that she could resist pain for days or even weeks. She could distract herself with alcohol, cigarettes and food. She could squash the pain with powerful drugs. If those failed, she could ignore the pain – for a while, at least. But all this came at a cost: the rest of her life. She discovered that in ignoring and walling off the pain she had also isolated herself from all that is wonderful and precious about life. The world became increasingly wan and grey. Food lost its flavour and texture. She no longer laughed or cried. Her love life declined into irrelevance. All this meant that when she could no longer maintain the struggle, she simply crashed and burned. So not only did the pain return, but, with all of the things that normally sustained her love of life having evaporated, she was left feeling fragile and broken. No wonder her doctor wanted to prescribe her antidepressants.
After three years of struggling, Claire embraced mindfulness – not because she believed that it would work, but because she was desperate. And when she began to mindfully explore the sensations of pain, something remarkable and counter-intuitive began to happen. Not only did the pain begin to subside, but she began to experience all of the good things that had been squeezed out of her life too. It opened the door to a wealth of emotions such as happiness, love, compassion and empathy, as well as sadness. Claire realised that life is bittersweet, and when she let go of expecting it to be either wholly wonderful or truly distressing and to hold in an honest heart a delicate mixture of the two, she felt increasingly relaxed and open. Through facing up to and becoming sensitive to her own predicament, she became a happier and more centred person with greater empathy for others. She also began to heal.

Ridge IVF | IVF Centres In Delhi | ElaWoman
What is IVF?
IVF, or in vitro fertilisation, is a method in which eggs are fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. It turned into developed 40 years in the past for the treatment of girls with broken fallopian tubes, and this stays a vital cause for treatment these days. However, it's also used in cases wherein a girl has endometriosis; the male partner has poor quality sperm, or while the cause of infertility is unknown.
Embryos which might be created following IVF are then transferred, typically separately, into the lady accomplice’s womb to implant and increase or frozen for transfer in a later non-stimulated cycle. Embryos are saved by means of eliminating the fluid from the cells before freezing them in liquid nitrogen, called vitrification. Thanks to this technique success prices from a frozen embryo transfer are now as correct, or higher, than treatment in a fresh IVF cycle.
IVF treatment can take location the use of the patient's own eggs and sperm or with the use of donor eggs or donor sperm. The London Women's Clinic gives IVF treatment for women and couples struggling to conceive and for same intercourse couples and single women the usage of donor sperm.
How does IVF work
The IVF treatment procedure starts off evolved with a direction of hormone therapy to stimulate the development of follicles in the ovary. These eggs are then accumulated, are then fertilised to create numerous embryos. After among to five days in an incubator, one or every now and then two of those embryos are transferred through the vagina to the uterus, wherein implantation occurs, and being pregnant begins.
The IVF Process
To give an explanation for what happens in an IVF system we've got divided the IVF technique into six tiers:
Stage 1: The ovaries are inspired with a route of medicine to provide eggs. During this period you will attend the medical institution for some of monitoring scans to test the development of your follicles that produce eggs. Once the follicles have reached the ideal length, you will be given an injection to mature your eggs ready for series.
Stage 2: On the day of egg series, you'll be given a small amount of sedation in coaching for the manner. A first-class needle connected to a scanning probe might be surpassed via your vagina into each ovary to gather the eggs. On the same day, your male associate will need to produce a semen pattern, or in case you’re the use of donor sperm, this could be thawed ready for use.

A transcription of the english subtitles for part two of a two-part documentary about Hiroshi Tanahashi, produced by NJPW in 2014. Part one is here.
Teaser:
Question: What if Tanahashi Jr. became a pro wrestler?!
HT: Well, right now he plays soccer. When I ask him if he wants to be a pro wrestler, he answers “No way!” When I ask why, he says, “It looks like it hurts.” It certainly does.
Q: What if he does become a pro wrestler?
HT: Well, then the second coming would happen this century.
(the little opening sequence plays; the theme of Tana's documentary is about Tana's passion for wrestling and his love for the fans)
Caption: 1.4 Towards Tokyo Dome
HT: I love the Tokyo Dome but I'm not convinced yet. To explain why, you've got these great crowds at Korakuen Hall and Ryogoku but so many more people come to the Dome, right? The crowd at the Dome get up and go crazy for great matches that I watched when I was a fan. Like the 10.9 show or Inoki's retirement match, that reaction is what I want to draw out.
Caption: November 20th, Gold's Gym, Shinjuku, Tokyo. Tanahashi continues training towards 1.4
(we're inside Gold's Gym, watching Tana go through his workout)
HT: The target is 300. Six days a week to reach that goal. I did it two years in a row but last year I only did 291. This year is shot. (he leans on a railing, sighing at the tragedy of it all) Even if I work hard from now on I won't make 300. I'll do 3-A-Days!
Caption: How to make time
HT: You have to manage your time wisely. So, when I'm out doing local promoting I always carry my workout gear and a change of clothes with me. And so, if I get like a 2 hour break, I ask our staff where the gym is and just go there. Footwork is really important. And then I'll appear on TV or radio soaked in sweat. (laughs)
(more of Tana working out)
Caption: Training outstanding talent
HT: Of course, I want to be bigger. In a short term, I train hard to increase flexibility. Then I add more muscle mass.
Caption: Ideal Body
HT: For me, it's the Dynamite Kid. If I could get a body like his, I want to be like that. That was number one.
Q: Have you gotten close to having a body like the Kid?
HT: Not even close. The Kid in his prime, he had big shoulders and huge traps, also he was just so quick. I don't have that kind of body yet. I've still got a way to go.
Caption: A peek at his strict eating habits
(Tana buys a little bento box at the counter and sits down at a window seat for lunch)
Q: Tanahashi, what's this?
HT: This is Gold Gym's chicken breast boxed lunch. Brown rice, boiled chicken breast and broccoli. It's really good. And healthy.
(he breaks his hashi up, briefly clasps his hands together and says “Itadakimasu,” then starts eating)
Q: This is your lunch?
HT: Yes
Q: You're pretty strict about your eating habits, right?
HT: There's a difference when you're being strict and when you're not. You can feel it in your body right away. I really like sweets, and there are times I eat at night, but...building your body is a gradual process. You jusy have to keep at it. So you can eat something bad one day, and still be ok. Changes take place over time, both good and bad.
Caption: Meals during national tours
HT: During national tours...I don't eat much at night. At company dinners I eat selectively. Like edamame or lean sashimi. When there's just convenience stores, then my go-to food is canned mackerel. I just eat them one after another. I can't stop. (laughs)
Q: Is ramen completely out of the question? Do you like ramen?
HT: I love ramen and I want to eat some. I crave them! But it's ok. The Dome is waiting.
Caption: Bodybuilding for 1.4
HT: I always strive to be in my best shape for the Dome...and whatever nerves I get, I put to use. I have to or else. I bundle up all my feelings and take the to the Dome, where I release them.
Caption: Tanahashi's 1.4 has already started.
(Tana walks out of the gym. His gait is less odd, so, maybe the umbrella was throwing him off before, or the wet ground made him walk cautiously)
Caption: to the town of Omotesand?
Caption: Enjoying a little free time
HT: I used to go shopping a lot when I was younger, but now it's just rarely. I love shopping, but, it takes too long, it takes twice as long as other people. And they never have my size. (laughs)
(It's raining again - Tana is standing out in it with his umbrella, eating a protein bar. “Gotta get my fix,” he says)
Caption: It started raining so we headed to a special place.
Caption: November 20th, Rela Quwa Omotesando
(Tana enters some kind of medical office, probably a physiotherapy place, various greetings. Inside, he's seated filling out forms, and answering the doctor's questions)
HT: My neck is bad.
Doctor: Yes
HT: In my neck and waist...I can barely turn my neck.
(the doctor, Hiroki Mihara, makes hmmm noises, and asks about injuries)
HT: Some fractured bones in my hand. My knuckles, both right and left cross ligaments, and front and back ligaments too (indicating his knees)
HM: I see. Anything else?
HT: Last August, I injured my neck really badly, but it's better. There's something near the base of my head that works like a catch and must be forcibly reset each time.
HM: Were you dropped?
HT: From really high up, it was bad. (chuckles)
HM: Yes. So mostly the neck?
HT: Yeah, and my back is stiff in the morning. It feels like it might pop when I get up slowly.
(quick cut. Absent his coat, Tana sits on the exam table with a pained look while the doctor examines his back)
HM (about the alignment of his back): This is straight.
HT: So it's off, to the left.
HM: Yeah
HT: I didn't realize.
HM (checking his shoulders): The shoulders are off, too.
HT: Now that you mention it.
HM (turning Tana): It goes this way.
HT: So it seems.
HM (indicating right): This side. (he manipulates Tana's left arm) You need to stretch more.
HT: My left shoulder is really bad, the right is still ok.
HM (checking Tana's right shoulder): Yes, so it seems. What about your neck?
HT: Both sides really hurt.
HM: With your shoulders like this...your neck is straight.
HT: Really? (he makes a “Yeeeech” noise)
HM: It really is yes. Do this and you can move.
HT: I see.
HM (indicating Tana's troublesome left shoulder): Let's do this shoulder.
HT: Yes please.
Caption: Toward 1.4 making the condition of his injured body as good as possible.
(Tana is flat out on the exam table while the doctor works on his limbs)
HM: Your muscles are great.
HT (muffled, he's on his stomach while the doctor works on his back): They're too soft.
HM: Piable.
Question from a NJPW staffer, until now silent): Big difference?
HM: Yes, completely different. Comparing top athlete's muscles to others, even though they're soft, they're more pliable, which means they respond easily to loosening. Your muscles will loosen up right away. If your muscles were more rigid, you'd get much stiffer quickly. And your joints are much looser than I expected.
HT (still muffled): Many people think that pro wrestlers aren't that flexible.
(time passes, Tana is on his back now while the doctor tends to his left shoulder. When we pan up to his face, he looks both like he's in slight pain and like he's on a one way magic carpet ride to Blisstown, population: Tanahashi)
HT: Amazing, I feel it...
HM: I can move it now.
HT (indicating with his right arm): Before it only moved to here.
HM: I'm surprised you could move it.
HT: But it's fixed now.
HM: It's been a long time.
HT: Yes it was. It hurt so bad. I could hardly move it by myself. It even hurt just to stretch it.
Caption: The injured body
(Tana is on his side while the doctor works his right shoulder hard. He's not in Blisstown anymore)
HT (voiceover, after the session): When you are performing for others, you have to possess this inner strength. When people come to see you perform, as a pro wrestler, there is this desire to make them happy and enthusiastic. You have to perform despite the pain.
HM (while working on Tana's neck): There are some pro wrestlers who continue on even while injured.
HT: In fact, I had to continue wrestling after suffering whiplash. It was in the big tournament this summer, I went on even though I couldn't move my neck.
HM: I'll do your neck thoroughly.
(shots of the session continue while Tana does another voice over. He has a sizable scar on his left elbow, probably from some surgery or other)
Caption: Body care of a 38 year old
HT: When I was younger, I'd hit the gym without any preparation. But as I got older, I started stretching before and after. Also, this might sound strange, but while showering after finishing my workout, I would say “thank you” to my muscles as I washed my body. (he starts to laugh)
(the session concludes)
HM: You were in bad shape, especially on your left side, but you'll feel better now.
HT: I see.
HM: To be honest, your whole body was out of line, but another (session) or two and you'll be fine.
HT (smiling, knowing he'll probably delay too long the next time too): I'll come again.
(Tana takes a selfie with the doc, because of course he does)
Caption: Suddenly, an outstanding talent comes...
(a Very Tall Kid walks in. One of the clinic staff, he's 22 years old and 6'2. Tana looks like all his christmasses have come at once, and immediately goes into Recruitment Mode.)
HT: New Japan is recruiting new members, so come!
(the kid starts to laugh)
HM: He's 6'2, definitely.
HT: He'll get bigger.
HM: You're only 22, right?
(the kid nods, he's past speaking for a moment but grinning incandescently at Tana. He kinda reminds me of Okada a bit, the way he's grinning)
The Kid: Yes. I want to bodybuild.
HM: Start with bodybuilding. You can always do both, so start with that.
HT: Amazing! 6'2 is really tall for a Japanese.
The Kid, to Tana: Do I have to be your size?
HT: You are big enough now.
(Tana takes a selfie with The Kid, because of course he does)
(outside again)
Caption: January 4, 2015; Standing on the main stage of the Tokyo Dome 5 years in a row.
HT: I feel like New Japan Pro Wrestling...is riding on my shoulders. "I love you four years in a row." is what I want to continue. Until I'm told, it's enough.
Caption: VS Okada Kazuchika
HT: What makes Okada so great and popular nowadays is, like me, we have this great connection with our fans. And Okada's motto has always been “Keep evolving!” Okada's popularity is already staggering, so facing someone like Tanahashi may not be enough for Okada. What can I do? Evolve. I will evolve. Okada and the fans want that. What can I do to make pro wrestling more exciting? Be stronger and outrageous. If we make pro wrestling interesting, its popularity will continue to grow...
Caption: 1.4 The Moment of victory
HT (hums for a second): In kanji, “bliss” is written with “climax” and “good fortune.” I wonder...for a wrestler its the peak. Realizing your dreams of becoming a champion, in a place like the Tokyo Dome, and saying “I love you all,” that is bliss. To go far beyond the confines of the Tokyo Dome, doing what I love as a pro wrestler, I want to continue to savor new and exciting experiences for years to come.
