Bristol - Castle Park View High Rise

Castle Park View is a 26-storey high-rise in Bristol, England. Completed in 2022, the development occupies the site of the former Central Ambulance Station at the corner of Castle Street and Tower Hill and was proposed in 2017, with work starting in 2019. Designed by Chapman Taylor, the development contains 375 apartments and is currently the tallest building in Bristol at a height of 98m.

The development forms part of an emerging tall building cluster around Castle Park. The 26 storey tower is one of five blocks and is clad in an offsite pre-fabricated façade system that consists of Moca Creme stone, inset clay bricks, window panels and spandrel panels. The design of the tower called for fritted, black painted, laminated glass spandrel panels for the façade, however, revised Building Regulations following the Grenfell Tower Fire relating to fire safety resulted in a design change during construction, to opaque, powder-coated aluminum sheets. The tower itself is crowned with a 6-metre constellation. .

Castle Park View is the first commercial connection to the Bristol district heating Network, Bristol City Council's own network of pipes providing low-carbon heat to businesses and homes across the city.

It has since been voted as one of the worst looking towers to be built in the UK since 2018 - I tend to agree

Painting Elective Task: Inspiration

Today, to begin the Painting Elective this Semester, we were asked to post three images which inspire us. Here is a selection of images which inspire me:

I find the work of the British artist Jonathan Yeo to be incredibly inspirational and I feel that his painting “Photo Booth Selfie” (2014) is particularly relevant to the theme of Movement. I am fascinated by the contrast between Yeo’s realistic depiction of certain details and areas of the painting and the unfinished appearance of other sections of the image. I think that this could suggest that the moment that Yeo is capturing in this painting is happening so quickly that he does not have enough time to fully complete the image or capture every detail of the moment, which, along with the pose that Yeo depicts himself in, creates a sense of immediacy and rapid movement, in my opinion.   

I am also especially intrigued by the way in which this painting focuses on the relationship between painting and photography as its subject matter, as I am interested in photography and I chose Photography, Film and Video as one of my Electives for this Semester.

When I saw the painting “Grief” (1951) by Jack B. Yeats in the National Gallery of Ireland, I was struck by its large scale, along with the stark contrast between the dark blue and black tones and the vibrant yellow, orange and red colours of the fire, and I was captivated by this work. I feel that the free, expressive brushstrokes create a sense of movement in this image, which highlights the chaos and danger of war.

I think that this artwork by Banksy exhibits a contrasting approach to portraying movement to those of the other images that I have included in this post. I feel that the way in which Banksy transforms a familiar, or even mundane, environment into an intriguing artwork in this piece by simply adding a single human figure to the wall of this building is extremely intelligent. I am interested in such methods of creating a sense of movement through clearly defined, still image, including through the depiction of gestures, which is evident in this work. The graphic style of this depiction is interesting to me, as I also chose Graphic Design Communication as one of my Electives for this Semester.

My grandma is the sweetest women to walk this earth. She spends her days working as a florist in a grocery store, even at age 77. She tells me that one downside to working in a grocery store is that the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas music starts and does not stop until January 1st.

My Grandma and I spoke today about some more of her experiences with audio media. We started with her experiences with records. She grew up in a family that had enough money to make ends meet and to sleep at night, but extra spending money was not usually something they had lying around.

“We were poor,” she said. “We didn’t have a record player. But I did love to go to the record store and they had these little booths in the back, and in these little booths you could listen to records! My favorite had to be Elvis, of course. But there was Nat King Cole, I really liked him, and there were the McGuire Sisters too.”

She also told me of the fun times she would have at Teen Town at her church Sunday nights. Teen Town was a mixer of sorts, but not the kind that you would take a date to, according to my grandma. She said that she would always go with a group of her girlfriends and the boys would go with their boys as well. But, she did say that once you got there, you would mingle and dance with girls and boys, all while listening to a live band.

“It was the kind of dance that girls would wear their poodle skirts to,” my grandma said. “I didn’t wear one, but I had some friends who would. The music was a lot of fun too! We would do the stroll, that’s when the boys and girls make two lines and a ‘couple’ runs down the middle, like they’re taking a stroll!”

The Stroll

She loves to talk about fun dances she would do when she was younger. But she also loves to talk about radio. She told me about the four foot tall, three feet long radio that sat in the living room was she was young. She also had a radio in her bedroom when she got a little older, and there was also a radio in her kitchen, but not for long.

“We used to have a radio in the kitchen,” she said. “But one day I moved it over on top of the oven, so I would have more counter space to bake a cake. This was not a good idea, however, because by the time the cake had finished cooking, so had the radio. It did look nice though, it looked almost like a landscape, with the melted radio and tubes sticking out. But that was the end of a radio in the kitchen.”

While she did not have a car of her own, some of her friends did, so they would love to get in the car and drive around and listen to the radio, sing along, and have a blast. She told me that was how she heard about the newest songs and artists, the radio. She also would listen to the radio with her family too. They would listen to music or a program. She remembered The Shadow, a show about a good guy like batman who would stop the bad guys from robbing banks and things of that sort. She also remembered listening to a show called Ozzie and Harriet, a show about a mom, dad and their two sons who would get themselves into trouble and wacky situations. It’s strange what people remember from such a long time ago.

“I remember there was a commercial for Ipana Toothpaste,” she said. “Brusha Brusha Brusha! That was their little song. Brusha Brusha Brusha!”

Now, my grandma listens to mostly radio still. She says that she sometimes like to listen to talk radio, but she will mostly listen to the oldies station or put in her Patsy Cline CD. I’m surprised she hasn’t worn that CD out yet, it’s all she ever puts in her car’s CD player! She says she would like to listen to an audio book one day maybe, but she doesn’t know what book. I keep trying to show her how to listen to podcasts too, but she is still struggling to get the hang of them. She has seen a lot of advancements in audio media, and I’m ready to bring her into the latest advancements.

In the last year I’ve been taping a sheet of regular paper to the back of the #bristolboard because I got tired of dirt or ink collecting on the back of the drawing. I would scrub the drawing board before each inking session and ink would still show up on the back of the bristol board. SO that’s why the blue tape. I get weird and I don’t like using white up. Sketching out rough ideas today.

I was really struck by the way Erik Kessels displayed the photos his dad had taken of his car rebuild before he had the stroke.

These are clustered together in grid form, much like you lay out tools for ease of reach when doing a job, or how you lay out the screws etc from some horrid flat pack build. Shirley's married life started as an Army wife and I know they had to have everything regimented in Army quarters. I intend to show pictures of her treasured possessions and daily life now, in just such a fashion on the wall out side the booth. It feels like bookending her story/ life journey with order.

I went to the workshop today to discuss my ideas for frames for display of photos. I could make 16-20 tray frames or look at various companies to see viable affordable options.

Mark suggested printing onto aluminium at a company called Whitewall. The images are fully bled and I wouldn’t need a frame but could employ a shelf system (much like a mantle shelf) and lean the images against the wall. I will look into getting samples of this.

Meanwhile I saw this in the workshop and wondered whether I could adapt it to my needs.
