The Duke of York with painter Philip de László at 3 Fitzjohn’s Avenue (de László’s London address), 1933.
Footage: The de László Archive Trust
‘In 1926 de László painted a portrait of George Eastman, who presented him with one of the first hand-held motion picture cameras, the Ciné-Kodak model B, introduced in 1925. From then until de László’s death in 1937, the artist, his sons and his studio assistant, Frederick Harwood, filmed a unique record of his life and work on 16mm film.’

Portrait of Ellice Endicott, Mrs William Endicott, née Ellice Mack (1926). Philip Alexius de László (British, 1869-1937). Oil on canvas.
Ellice Endicott was a keen and celebrated tennis player, ranked number 10 in the US in 1916 and number 11 in 1927. Mrs Endicott is a tall and very pretty girl with glorious auburn hair. With masterful brushwork the artist beautifully captures Mrs Endicott’s ethereal, diaphanous grey silk gown, with chiffon wrap trimmed with gold. The position of her left arm, resting on the back of a chair, enables the artist to echo its gilded ornamentation in the undulating, golden lines of the wrap, as well as highlighting her pearl bracelet and diamond ring.

Portrait of Charles Douglas Conyers Lang (c.1926). Philip Alexius de László (Hungarian, 1869-1937). Oil on canvas.
De László offered to paint this portrait for a reduced fee. The sitter's mother wrote that if he could let his offer stand, she would prefer to postpone the sittings; "He is just losing his teeth too which does not improve his appearance." De László, with his alla prima technique, probably executed this painting in 2 or 3 sittings of 2 hours.
