Sounds like they just didn’t want to pay for Phil’s higher salary - but they were fine with paying a one-time transfer fee. Ben Ainslie strikes again!

In a statement to the Herald, team principal and chief executive of the Canadian SailGP team Phil Kennard said it was important for the new group to have a Canadian national at the helm, and Scott, who is a Canadian citizen, is a great signing.

“The Canada SailGP Team has a strong foundation in place, with a group of talented athletes. As a new ownership group, we took the time to review all aspects of the team and we felt that to be the only team on the start line without a national on the wheel would impede the growth and progress of the team in this critical phase,” Kennard said.

“We are excited to have Giles - who lived and first sailed in Ottawa - as our new driver.”

Scott moves to the team after British team chief executive Sir Ben Ainslie negotiated an undisclosed transfer fee for his services. The 37-year-old only joined the British team at the helm midway through season four after Ainslie stepped down, but had a successful start in SailGP which included an event win in Halifax, Canada.

“This is a great opportunity for Giles and therefore we support his move to the Canada SailGP Team. Giles did an excellent job as driver of the Emirates GBR F50 and we are sure he will go on to achieve great things with the Canadian team,” Ainslie said.

“This is the first-ever transfer fee deal in sailing and it shows the level of the team’s performance last season as well as the strength of the commercialisation of the league.”

I thought this was a great episode from SailGP. Great editing from their junior staff! I cried. And completely fair to show the frustration from other teams (Denmark’s restraint being the only one they could probably show on camera) to the cancellation of Saturday sailing.

Nice to show so many NZ sailors with their families (Phil Robertson, Blair hugging his dad, Lucinda screaming her support for Pete and the team).

Great to see the behind the scenes coverage of Saturday (Alexandra M is the only person that they could put on camera and show somebody keeping her cool as those above her were losing their minds)

Let’s face it, Lisa and Pete were and ARE waaaaayyyyy better ambassadors for the league than Russell Coutts and moneybags behind the scenes.

Excited for Bermuda, where the Kiwis have always done well. The third spot is still up for grabs! Who will claim it?

Well, now we get to see the official presentation of the Christchurch event, and it’s not quite the “we were responsible, moving on” angle the CBS special took— showing the league and fans being inconvenienced could be considered “complain-y”, but in a much more restrained way than Coutts’ rants. It does feel kind of like scapegoating that Chief of Staff Alex Mato is the only representative of “league management” shown.

Still, Peter Burling and Lisa Darmanin’s summaries, “We played by the rules this weekend and had an absolutely amazing day.” and “We do put nature at the forefront of our decision-making at SailGP but we also live for racing— and that’s what we got.” do show an understanding that Day 1’s cancellation was the right thing to do even if it was unpleasant.

On a brighter note, great racing footage from both the Christchurch practice and Day 2, and Burling confirms his new child is a daughter while also explaining why he wants to keep his family out of the public eye.
