Enteric coated tablets, also called gastro-resistant tablets, have delayed-release features. They are designed to pass unchanged through the stomach to the intestines, where the tablets are insoluble at the low pH of the stomach but dissolve at the higher pH values of the intestine.
Some of the most important reasons for enteric coating are:
1. To protect acid-labile drugs from gastric fluids, such as enzymes and certain antibiotics.
2. To prevent gastric distress or nausea caused by drug irritation, for example, sodium salicylate.
3. To deliver drugs intended for local action in the intestine, such as intestinal antiseptics, in a concentrated form.
4. To deliver drugs to their primary absorption site in their most concentrated form, such as drugs optimally absorbed in the small intestine or colon.
5. To provide a delayed release component for repeat-action tablets.
Materials used in enteric coated tablets
1. Cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP)
2. Methacrylic acid polymers (Eudragits)
3. HPMC phthalate
4. Polyvinyl actetate phthalate (PVAP)
5. Shellac

Chilled Water Systems: The Cool Backbone of Modern Infrastructure
Introduction
What Are Chilled Water Systems?
Chilled water systems are essential components in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry. They provide a reliable method to cool large buildings and industrial processes by circulating chilled water throughout the system, effectively removing heat from the space.
Importance in Modern Infrastructure
In today's world, where energy efficiency and environmental impact are crucial considerations, chilled water systems play a vital role. They are used in various settings, from commercial buildings to industrial facilities, ensuring comfortable and safe environments while minimizing energy consumption.
How Chilled Water Systems Work
Basic Components
A typical chilled water system consists of chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and a network of pipes. The chiller is the core component, responsible for removing heat from the water, which is then circulated through the building or process.
The Cooling Cycle
The cooling cycle begins with the chiller, where refrigerant absorbs heat from the water. This chilled water is then distributed through the building via a network of pipes. As it flows through air handlers and fan coil units, it absorbs heat from the air, effectively cooling the space. The now-warmed water returns to the chiller to begin the cycle again.
Types of Chilled Water Systems
Air-Cooled Chillers
Air-cooled chillers use air to dissipate heat from the refrigerant. They are typically used in smaller installations or where water availability is limited. These systems are easier to install and maintain but can be less efficient in extreme temperatures.
Water-Cooled Chillers
Water-cooled chillers use water from a cooling tower to remove heat from the refrigerant. These systems are more efficient and suitable for larger installations but require more space and higher maintenance.
Applications of Chilled Water Systems
Commercial Buildings
In commercial buildings, chilled water systems are crucial for maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures. They are commonly used in office buildings, malls, and hotels.
Industrial Uses
Industries such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and food processing rely on chilled water systems to maintain process temperatures and ensure product quality.
Data Centers
Data centers, which generate significant amounts of heat, use chilled water systems to keep servers cool and operational, preventing overheating and downtime.
Hospitals
Hospitals utilize chilled water systems to ensure a comfortable environment for patients and staff, as well as to maintain the proper functioning of medical equipment.
Benefits of Chilled Water Systems
Energy Efficiency
Chilled water systems are known for their energy efficiency, particularly water-cooled systems, which can significantly reduce energy consumption compared to traditional air conditioning systems.
Cost Savings
By reducing energy consumption, chilled water systems can lead to substantial cost savings over time. Additionally, their longer lifespan and lower maintenance costs contribute to overall savings.
Environmental Impact
These systems have a lower environmental impact due to their efficient use of energy and the ability to use eco-friendly refrigerants, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Challenges and Considerations
Installation Costs
While chilled water systems offer many benefits, the initial installation costs can be high, especially for water-cooled systems, which require extensive infrastructure.
Maintenance Requirements
Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the efficiency and longevity of chilled water systems. This includes checking refrigerant levels, inspecting pumps and pipes, and ensuring the cooling tower is functioning correctly.
Space Considerations
Water-cooled systems require significant space for cooling towers and associated equipment, which can be a limitation in urban areas or buildings with limited space.
Choosing the Right Chilled Water System
Assessing Needs
Choosing the right system involves assessing the cooling needs of the building or process, including the required capacity and efficiency.
Budget Considerations
Budget plays a crucial role in the decision-making process. While water-cooled systems are more efficient, they come with higher upfront costs compared to air-cooled systems.
Long-Term Planning
Considering the long-term benefits, including energy savings and maintenance costs, is essential when choosing a chilled water system. Investing in a more efficient system upfront can lead to significant savings over time.
Advancements in Chilled Water Systems
Smart Technology Integration

I guess I'm doing this...collection of observations from the autiomaa mv (i'm not going to call it an analysis) tonight after all 😅
So the mv starting out with a really short flash of the tear-illusion shot, then some short bursts of him in 2 locations in the mv, followed by a longer pan on a cracking facade...
The light effects on the wall look like being under water, which also kind of replicated by the fabric of his coat.
The following couple of scenes establish where he is - aimlessly wandering in some abandoned house - we zoom in intensely, almost uncomfortably close to his neck and eyes - he's making almost pleading eye-contact. He is wandering further, through the house, arriving at and entering
A staircase through a door, which closes after him.
To me, this signifies his decision to enter esc. The staircase can take you upwards - maybe signified by the lighted glass wall above. But what we see is not him confidently walking upstairs but being caught in that hallway, traveling up and down the stairs. He hasn't reached the upper floor and is caught in limbo. Alone with himself.
The therapist scene starts. He slinks in, hunched, making himself smaller than he is, drowning in his clothes. The session also takes place in a warehouse but it's set up in a way that it might as well be an interrogation.
He is pleading again - spilling everything out in the hope he's understood. However, what we see next is him talking/singing to a mirror image of himself. Either to signify he is talking to himself because the therapist doesn't listen and/or only he himself can truly understand and listen to his problems.
We get the photo scene - that one has been talked about at length
And that flash seems to start a transition in the video from where flashes were mainly used as separating element between shots to actually flashing on him physically and more relentless than before.
He is transversing more rooms and hallways - followed and faced by dozends of flashes from cameras, spotlights follow and corner him - he can't hide or evade.
He keeps traversing hallways and empty rooms but he seems locked inside - restless and defeated at the same time - either visual for his mind that he can't open up about but also very much likely his real life situation not being able to leave the house in peace.
He longingly stares out of the window. This is where i'll stick my neck out and say they deliberately recreated the visual from his Vogue shot in profile. I can only speculate but to me, it's to put something into contrast, either between then and now/after or maybe between outside vs inside. I mean. Look at it:
We see him(?) as a shadow behind the upper floor glass wall in the light - he made it there after all but we/his mind is still watching from below and can't make contact with that person up above.
His dance moves get more and more erratic, a bit like someone waiting and slowly going crazy from it.
Watching the headlines with the therapist seems to upset him. They are projected in stark white and big - because they are important to him, because they are bigger than him or because he is watching his own life happening like a movie but not feeling any of it as real. Others can't relate to it because it's just too uncommon and crazy. He realizes this while looking at his therapist, seeing how could anyone ever get it who hasn't gone through the same thing - he'll not have a chance to get this across.
His dancing gets even more lifeless afterwards - almost swaying in a traumatized manner barely holding himself upright, especially after the therapist proves to be useless and making things worse even. (To me, it's not quite clear what the cigarettes offered by the therapist signify - pharmaceutical drugs/tablets? The only way out is returning to his old vices?)
We end a little like we started - with an intense stare into his eyes. They are not pleading. They know. They see. (They demand better.)
Aaaand that's it for now. (I'm sure there will be one or two ''AND ANOTHER THING!'' but i'd love to hear from you also!!!)
Thanks for listening to my TED talk <3
#käärijä#autiomaa thoughts#i do this#very curious what others think <3#god i hope he takes so much time off in 2025 :')#(let me know if i should rather put this under a readmore)

Growing into the Job, Post 371: Melissa, Evolution
That was a nice little nap, thought Melissa Monroe, Office Manager at what was still Far Horizons Medical Associates. Here at Evolution Pharmaceuticals, of course, she was Subject MM-1A. She’d woken unaware of the time after a full morning of physical testing, invasive blood work and a battery of interviews. Had she been out for an hour, maybe? However much time it was, she was a bit upset they’d kept her this long. They should know better. Didn’t they realize how much he needed her with him? He’d just had his apartment ransacked over the weekend, for real, and we still didn’t know who did it!
He got nervous so easily now, and even though she knew her girls were there to take care of him, she still really, really wanted to get back and make sure he was okay. So, though she’d do her best to put on a smile, she was a bit miffed at them. She was also strapped down to the exam table by her wrists, ankles, and around her waist.
She could understand why they did that, these days: they were getting afraid, a bit. There’d been times, recently, that she’d gotten a little out of control during these scans, even under sedation. So, the leather straps and restraints were just for everyone’s safety. The thought made her have to choke back a giggle. It’s like they don’t even know that, if I really wanted, I could tear through these things like tissue paper.
Turning her head, Melissa saw that two familiar technicians, young women in white lab coats, were in the corner of the big testing chamber, standing huddled together over their tablets in deep conversation. One was Marcia. She was nice, if a little boring. The other was the blonde. She was sweet, always brought Melissa water whenever she needed and she made really good protein shakes.Neither of them seemed to realize that Melissa was awake, and though the two were being careful to speak in hushed tones, Melissa could hear their conversation as clear as day. This super hearing is great.
They’d brought her in today, at the last minute, after getting reports of some new abilities she’d been exhibiting, some ‘unexpected developments’. It seemed to make them nervous. Specifically they’d asked her about the thunder-voice, the hurricane breath, anything else she’d noticed as changes. Some things she told them about, demonstrated for them; she hadn’t mentioned the hearing.
Maybe I’ll tell them about it later. Or haha maybe not.
But she heard the two lab girls currently talking about some of the strength testing they had put her through this morning, before they’d put her in the stasis from which she’d just awoke. Melissa always found it sort of fun, being able to show off how incredibly strong she’d been getting. She loved seeing the reactions of the technicians and doctors, which recently had been running the gamut between incredulous excitement and awestruck wonder at her frankly staggering physical power. There was, these days, hints of unmistakable nervousness, too, sometimes even a little alarm on their faces.
Haha good, she would sometimes think, a bit of fear is okay. Though of course they all tried to hide their little emotions, Melissa could feel it gathering in her, the amazement people felt when seeing what she could do, what she was becoming. Like, she was getting so fucking strong. Today she was finally able to basically max out their specialized weight equipment and the techs were - over in their little corner, with their little voices - discussing the need to get in something bigger, something even more industrial-grade. Melissa liked that idea. You can make it ten times bigger I’m just gonna get stronger.
Even though she’d hesitate to call what they’d put her through a real workout, Melissa’s muscles had been buzzing pleasantly after their little strength test. The blonde lab tech had given her her favorite chocolate protein drink while Marcia hit her with an injection that would knock out a horse. As usual, that had put her in an unconscious state so they could scan her. Melissa was used to it. They would watch as her body responded to the new challenges, the exercise. They liked to study how her muscle fibers repaired themselves, made Melissa even stronger. Maybe these scans would give a hint as to what the fuck was up with these new superp-…uh…developments.
“Well,” Marcia had said, as the scans were running and Melissa slept, “at least her IQ is still the same. Olivia will be happy about that.” Indeed, the results were showing up on their tablets as well as the larger monitors about the room. While her physical changes were again astonishing, the testing which tracked her intellectual capabilities however still had her squarely in the one-standard-deviation-below-the-mean category. Not quite classified as a “moron” on the old Goddard scale, but close enough.
The poor thing, the blonde tech had sometimes found herself thinking She knew about MM-1A’s life, origins and upbringing, and she couldn’t help but sympathize with her. Despite everything that had happened up until now, Melissa was really not designed to lead, originally, or think. She was designed as a weapon. But, recently, the blonde tech had felt the stirrings whenever Melissa came into the lab. She hadn’t mentionedanything to Marcia about it yet, but there was something about this enormous, overgrown girl with the muscles of steel and now the breath and the voice, whose very steps caused the earth to quake, that made her feel, well…funny. She felt like she should bow her head whenever Melissa approached. So, it hadn’t been pity that had been motivating the blonde tech to treat Melissa extra nice these days, bring her offerings of water and snacks. It had been awe, reverence, something like…well, yeah.
Earlier, when Melissa was asleep, both techs had watched MM-1A lay there in stasis as the scans ran and her body repaired itself. They each privately stared at her and were preoccupied with their own thoughts. While the blonde admired Melissa’s growing beauty, Marcia silently swore that she could almost see the superhuman blood rushing through the young woman’s veins, fueling her muscles.
What must it feel like? Marcia marveled, allowing herself a rare moment of reverie, to start each day stronger than the day before? Taller, bigger, more powerful? The girl was 203cm now (nearly 6’8”!), and an unbelievable 285lbs. She was obviously becoming denser in bone and muscle structure and every week bigger than the week before, able to lift more, stronger is all measurable respects. In a playful moment earlier, in fact, she’d taken an empty bar from the weight bench and showed she could bend steel with her bare hands! She was becoming…so much more. Was that a little bit of envy Marcia was feeling? Yes, she guessed it was.
In the meantime, though, they needed their data.
During stasis, the techs watched their screens as MM-1A’s body had begun to enter a higher anabolic state where it started to repair and rejuvenate tissues. However, beyond simply repairing the microscopic tears in her skeletal muscle cells, MM-1A’s enhanced genetics signaled her body to not only fix the tissue damage but also to improve and fortify her cellular makeup – enhancing her musculature in ways logarithmically above and beyond normal. Her regenerative abilities were proving themselves vastly superior to even those of the most elite human athletes.
With each passing second, MM-1A’s tendons and muscles, which had been torn and ripped to base fibers by the intense physical exertion in the weight area, re-wove themselves even stronger and denser than before, becoming hundreds of times more powerful than should be possible. The techs also watched the bone scans, as MM-1A’s skeleton likewise reinforced itself, crystallizing calcium further into super hard limbs capable of withstanding extraordinary forces. Even the subject’s skin – so smooth and perfect to the external eye, soft and supple to the touch – became paradoxically harder and denser, more resistant to harm.
While MM-1A’s genetic code was designed using arcane methods beyond what either of the technicians could comprehend, its function was currently working orders of magnitude better than it had in the past, or how it was originally designed. MM-1a was getting slightly stronger, faster and more durable with each passing second as she slept. Plus, she seemed more gorgeous every time they looked at her.
As they worked, talked, the two technicians had still assumed MM-1A asleep, blissfully unaware of their conversation. Yet a slight grin had begun to creep across her beautiful face. The young woman, now awakening, could not only feel that something truly wonderful had once again happened inside of her, but could also feel the awe and admiration of the two women in the room. She decided to bask in that feeling privately, for a good long moment, with the thought of knowing how strong she was now sending chills of excitement down her superhumanly fortified spine. She knew the two young nerds were amazed, watching what Melissa dealt with every day: her being slowly reborn as something completely new, the world’s first super goddess.
The thought made Melissa moan; the walls rattled with it.
“NNNNNNNnnnnnnggggh…”
“Y-you’re awake…” Marcia said, eyes wide as - in a moment of atypical discomposure - she looked up from her tablet. The set of beakers on the table in front of her had stopped clinking, but her nerves were still clattering.
“I am,” Melissa replied, enjoying how deep her voice sounded, echoing around the room and again setting glassware jangling. Here in the lab, she felt less like she had to hold back on her abilities, her strength. There was just so much of her these days and while the world outside was beginning to look more fragile and so little - needing her to curb her power so that she didn’t hurt it - she figured the lab here at Evolution could take it.
“Good,” Marcia replied, stepping around the table with her blonde co-worker in tow.
“I like your glasses,” Melissa said to Marcia, complimenting the dark-haired young woman as she watched them both approach, “Are they new?” Though she was nearly naked, just in her bra and panties while these girls were dressed fully in lab coats and sensible shoes, Melissa felt perfectly comfortable while they seemed…less so. In fact, Melissa reveled a bit in the anxiety she could sense in them. Even as Marcia answered, saying something about her new frames, Melissa could tell that she was trying to sound confident. But there was something a little bit twitchy in her tone.
Melissa got that reaction a lot, these days - little people feeling nervous around her. She would never admit it, but it felt good. Watching how others responded was gradually making her confidence swell to levels nearly as superhuman as her body. She smiled, as she could feel the subtle energy coming from the two young women as they neared, the blonde one especially. It was something she’d begun to notice recently, this nice warmth that seemed to feed her, almost like a pleasant electric current. It came from others, especially those that seemed to admire her. Like him, she thought in a sudden moment of edacity, I want more of this from him.
Marcia had begun to rattle off results, numbers and statistics as she proceeded to undo the straps around Melissa’s wrists. The blonde began to unstrap the ones at her ankles, pausing to look at her big feet. Quietly, Melissa noticed…and secretly smiled.
Marcia described information they’d gathered about her changing metabolism, bone structure, even neuroanatomy. Some of it - well, lots of it - went right over Melissa’s head. But some of it made her perk right up and listen intently with her now-superhuman ears.
“You’ve grown 29.3 centimeters…” Marcia began, but then noticed Melissa - just beginning to sit herself up on the exam table - cock her head, in question. Marcia paused, remembering the results of the IQ battery. 82. “…More than eleven inches,” she corrected herself, adding, “A foot, you’ve grown almost a foot - in three-and-a-half mon-“
“And six inches in the last five weeks..!“ added the blonde, more excitement in her voice than Marcia would like to see.
“We’re concerned how long that’s going to keep going-”
“And if you’re going to just keep growing faster and faster,” said the blonde, reaching out to hand Melissa another chocolate shake.
Don’t smile anymore than you already are! Melissa told herself, taking the pint of clinically-tested but never 100% governmentally-approved mix of amino acids, creatine, albumin and casein. “Never underestimate a girl that hits her protein goals every day,” she smiled.
“We’re worried that you’re changing too fast,” Marcia continued dryly, not looking amused by Melissa’s little quip and just able to keep a crack out of her voice, “Looking at your genetics, your new sequencing, it’s looking less and less like…well, a human’s. You’re becoming something…different.”
“Something…better?” Melissa asked, now unable to fight back her marvelous, delighted smile.
“Well, I, um…” Marcia began, not really knowing how to answer.
Her blonde co-worker - resisting the sudden urge to kneel - did it for her, with a demonstrative:
”Yes.”

I'll show you mine if you show me yours... 😁 Speed Dating Chaos?
As you might imagine, this WIP was prompted by the same prompt from last Jilytober. This one. Though what I wrote then was nowhere near chaotic enough. Nor was there actual speed dating involved. But I did write some more here and there.
While it is on the list for this year and I hope to make a little more progress! But under the fold there is a little snippet of what it's turning into.
Back to the WIP tag game
Mariam had outdone herself, the room was filled with beautiful women and James had a hard time believing they were there for him. He wasn’t bad-looking by any standard, but he definitely wasn’t fit enough for most of these women. Hooking a finger into his collar, he gave himself some air and looked at the matchmaker beside him. “Are you sure they’re all here for me?”
His question was met with a disapproving look and a sarcastic reply. “No, I just invited them all here to show you what you can’t have.” She flicked a lock of straight black hair over her shoulder as she surveyed the room. “It does help that they have no idea what to expect other than You’re a young, family-oriented heir to a pharmaceutical empire. And if they have half a brain, which I made sure they did, you have a thing for redheads.”
It wasn’t like he had not noticed the trend before, a range from strawberry blonde to deep auburn. “I can’t help but feel like this is giving the wrong impression,” James commented, only for the answer to be interrupted by a phone call. Her iPad was pressed into his hand while she tucked the phone against her shoulder. “There is something I need to take care of. You stay here, don’t even think about going in without me.” She warned, her eyes flashing dangerously at him. All he could really do was nod and watch Mariam stalk off.
James wasn’t opposed to having another minute to himself, occasionally peering down at the pool of potentials waiting for him. Impatient as he was, it took all but three minutes for him to start pacing. Lingering near the door, wondering if he could peer his head through, just to check how she was going on.
Just as he decided to have a little peek, the door swung open, and a young woman rushed inside. Reeling to a stop right before colliding with him. “Oh bullocks, I’m so sorry I am late.” She started, tossing her trench coat his way. “You must be Duke.” James blinked at her confused, following her eyes gaze to the tablet in his hands. “So, you’re not my matchmaker?” Still nothing. “Goodness me, can you hear me?” His eyes travelled up to meet her, slowly. Taking in the trail of freckles that lead from a rather generous cleavage to the hollow of the throat. Soft copper waves framed her impatient expression.
Stammering for a moment, he managed a shake of his head. “No, sorry I’m not.” He smiled apologetically as if somehow this was all his fault. “I swear my calendar said conference room B.” She muttered to herself, and suddenly James’s eyes lit up. “This is D. I think you’re in the wrong room.” At his words, she marched back to the door and pulled it open, peering at the plaque on the side. “Oh piss it! You’re right! I am so sorry! Well, off I pop.” The woman laughed lightly, the sound like wind chimes.
Before he could do more than raise his hand to wave, she disappeared. Leaving him as startled as she had found him. Staring at the closed door, still smiling to himself when Mariam reappeared.

The Essential Questions
[When a child goes missing, certain questions must be asked.]
[Approach the question of Why with caution.]
[It is never a pretty story.]
{trigger warnings: alcoholism, child endangerment, suicidal ideation, unreliable narrator}
Who?
The screen is lit a garish green by the toxic smog in the larger photo, overshadowing the thumbnail in the corner. Leather creaks, an impatient eye scanning over the news clipping open on another screen. A lip curls up towards a nostril in a nasty twist, tongue clicking against pearly teeth.
"Who did we send that abomination after, again, Sandra?"
"Abominate, sir," comes the response from the corner. "And it's Sarah," follows the mutter, soft enough to ignore. "I believe you sent him after the Mason girl, sir."
"You believe." Mocking. "Yes, because I'm paying you for your stellar intuition. The contract, Samantha, check it. Honestly, how hard is it to confirm a thing?" A scoff, as he shakes his head, spinning his chair to face the window. "The Mason girl. What was her name, Margaret?" "Magnolia, sir." "Right, Marigold. Who was supposed to be keeping a eye on that one, then?"
There's no crude shuffling of papers; the tap of a silicone stylus tip against a tablet is all but silent. Loading screens have replaced the old waiting of searching through the papers. "According to the files, she was left in the custody of her father; one Joshua Mason. Pharmaceutical technician."
"Send for him. And whoever it was in charge of that project. Conference room Four, D, I think. The brights are working in that one, aren't they?" "Yes, sir." "Get to it, then! What are you waiting for?"
When?
The lights of the conference room, directly overhead, feel blinding. Sweat trickles down the back of Joshua's neck; somewhere behind him, the ventilation makes a clanking noise, a groaning hum. Motor's going, he doesn't mean to identify, in the back of his mind; he can't help it- he's heard that sound five summers in a row now, tried to fix it for three; easier to replace than to fix but who has that kind of money? --they do, why haven't they?
Papers shuffle; tap against the desk with a solid enough thnk to get his attention. His gaze snaps across the table, hand dropping from tugging at the collar of his shirt to fold in front of him.
"Mister Mason. Relax, would you?" Absolutely not. Unease is a prickle along the back of his neck, hair standing on end. "You aren't in trouble." Yet. "We just have some questions, about your family. For our records, of course."
We.
The man sitting near his superior must be one of the research scientists. It would explain the lab coat; the blue gloves. Joshua tries not to think about the stethoscope-- who even casually wears a stethoscope, what kind of sick power play is this-- or the tablet. Or the lingering familiarity; the photo on the wall of his daughter's pediatrician. In the pharmacy where he works. The nametag; the name on a label. It's not a coincidence. It could be a coincidence.
He needs to stop tugging at his collar. Awful habit, awful tell. As if they need it to see through the fake smile he's plastered on, leaning back in his seat. As if they can't see right through him, anyway.
"Of course."
Leather creaked across the room. His boss- his bosses boss?- sips at a glass of iced tea, a breeze disturbing the ends of his hair. He doesn't need to shuffle papers; he has a tablet, something fancy. Sleek, lightweight, collapsible. The papers are an accessory. Another power play.
You don't need them. He can't scream at his boss. You already have me between a rock and a hard place. Just say what you want to say. He Cannot Scream At His Boss.
The picture slid across the table to him makes him want to.
"Let's start with your daughter."
Let's not. His tie is too tight; he knew he should have stopped messing with it. His mouth feels dry, suddenly. "Maggie?" It's too light; it's too sharp. Too loud; he flinches away from the sound of his own voice, laughing nervously as he tugs at his tie. "I don't know why you'd need to know about her. I mean. She's a good kid."
"She's a good kid." Some smiles don't feel friendly. The one turned on Joshua now doesn't; tight at the corners, a single eyebrow arching over narrowing eyes. "I'm sure. Tell me more about her, anyway." Rubber taps against glass; swipes across the screen. "How long have you been homeschooling her?"
Breathe. "Sir?" Breathe. "Pardon?"
A tap across the screen. "Well, I'd hope you're homeschooling her, anyway. There's no enrollment records for this year or the last in your district for her. We checked, of course." That smile, smug and sly again. "In the interest of thoroughness."
Breathe. They don't know. There's a drumbeat in his skull like a warning march, as he forces a smile, dragging his hand down his tie. "Yes. Well." They don't know. "We thought she could use a more tailored experience, you know? Some more personal attention."
(More personal attention wouldn't have changed anything. Or would it have? Would she still be home, if they really had pulled her out to homeschool her?) (It doesn't matter.) (It doesn't.)
"You've been told before of Crey's educational benefits program for employees. Why not take advantage of it?"
"We didn't believe we qualified, sir."
A low laugh feels like a trap being set. "I see. Is that why you stopped using your medical benefits, then? Because you didn't believe you qualified?"
"Sir?" Drumming grows to pounding; if he slows down enough to count it, he's pretty sure he could measure his pulse by the racing in his throat. "I'm not sure what you mean?" A lie. He knows exactly what he means; the doctor is here for a reason.
He won't look.
"Your employee medical benefits, mister Mason. You and your wife haven't changed doctors. Why hasn't your daughter come in for her vaccinations?" The doctor hasn't spoken, yet. Disdain drips from his voice like venom as he does now, each word chosen as careful as a scalpel. "You knew you qualified enough to get your own vaccinations."
Sweat rolls down the curve of his jaw, light as a finger across his throat. He breaks. His gaze pulls away from the VIP for a moment, to settle on the doctor- the doctor, looking down his nose at him, nostrils scrunched like he's smelling something fail. Joshua tugs his tie again. Shifts his gaze back to the VIP. Feels the trap he'd seen being set close in around him, with the disdainful smile he receives.
"You know how this has to look, mister Mason. Your daughter stops going to school, stops seeing a doctor, while you and your wife carry on like nothing has changed at all--" Sly and slick, smugly superior. The files slide across the table, to rest in front of him. "--we want to help you. But you're going to have to be honest with us."
"Mister Mason."
No. Please don't ask.
"How long has your daughter been missing from home?"
Why?
The house is too quiet, these days. It makes the little noises so loud. The droning buzz of the flies over the garbage; the dripping kitchen faucet, the high pitched ring of the microwave. Turn the TV up to drown it out; take another drink, like she could drown her thoughts.
(She can't. Not when she can't pull her eyes away from the fly buzzing around the room, bouncing off the ceiling. Landing on a child's tacked up drawing, yellowed with cigarette smoke, speckled with bug shit.)
(Watch it fly away again, bounce off the ceiling again. Tangle it's wings in the spiderwebs dangling off the ceiling fan.)
(Had she felt like that, her little girl? Like a fly bouncing off of obstacles, trapped, doomed?)
(Don't think about it. Take another drink.)
(Tastes like horse piss.)
God. The house is too fucking quiet. Just-- shut up- just shut up.
Shut up. Drown it the fuck out. Drown it.
Stop fucking thinking about it.
God. What fucking good does it do.
God. Fucking. Why.
Why. Why her baby girl. Why her angel.
(You fucking know why. You fucking know why, Miriam.)
Drown it.
(She wouldn't have run without a damn good plan.)
(She wouldn't have run unless she thought she had a damn good reason.)
(She'd never complained about the fucking roaches.)
(Didn't even jump at the damn spiders.)
(Didn't fuss about her pets not being let inside. Didn't throw a fit about those vet visits they never made.)
(Didn't even whine about the fucking binder.)
(God. She should have fucking realized it couldn't last.)
(Fucking idiot.)
(This isn't helpful.)
(What the hell are you doing.)
(What the hell are you fucking doing, Miriam.)
(Your mother didn't raise you this way.)
(Hell do you think she'd say, she were here today?)
(Raising her grandbaby in this mold crusted shithole.)
(Losing her grandbaby to the fucking spiders.)
(And the hell is she doing about it?)
(Same fucking thing she always fucking does.)
(Getting drunk about it.)
Drown it.
(Drown yourself, bitch.)
Drown it.
(Yeah, how's that fucking working for you?)
Drown.
(Better off with no mom than one like you.)
It.
(She thought it too. Why else would she fucking leave.)
OUT.
"Shut up. Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up! Shut the fuck up! Shut up!" Something's burning in her lungs, something feels like it's tearing in her throat. "SHUT UP!"
Something crashes against the far wall, and she doesn't realize it's the bottle until her arm is already burning from over extension, and the pieces are scattered all across the carpet, cheap beer soaking into cheap synthetic fibers and fuck if that doesn't just feel like her entire fucking life.
God. Now she's fucking crying. God fucking damn it. Because-- because that's fucking helpful, right, because crying over spilled beer is any less pathetic than crying over spilled milk--- except no, that's right! It's more fucking pathetic. And she threw the fucking bottle her fucking self, so what fucking right does she have to fucking cry over it, anyway?
(It's not over the fucking beer, Miriam.)
"Shut up," Miriam hisses through her teeth as she grabs up a wad of not-totally-filthy-yet napkins, stomping over to the offensive puddle with a desperate fury. "Shut the fuck up. I'm not listening to you anymore tonight. Piss off. Come back when you have something fucking useful to say."
(Something useful, like-?)
"I said. Shut up."
(You're fucking crazy, talking to yourself. You know that, right?)
"Shut up. What part of shut up don't you fucking understand."
(You know what would make me really shut up for good?)
"I'm not fucking listening to you. I'm not listening! Lalala, I'm not listening!"
(This. This is why your daughter fucking left, Miriam.)
"Shut up already!"
(You're lucky Joshua isn't here to see this.)
"You aren't even fucking real. Shitty internal fucking monologue."
(Real original, cursing every sentence.)
"Yeah, well, fuck you too!"
(Haven't you got a better word than fuck?)
"Shitty internal monologues don't get to police my fucking language!" The laugh that pushes itself free is unanticipated-- but once the first giggle bubbles out, she can't hold back the ones that follow. Breathless, hysterical, guttering guffaws that peter out into hiccupping giggles. "You aren't fucking real."
"You," she repeats, voice softening to something approaching level. Maybe it's oxygen deprivation from laughing and sobbing and screaming making her giddy. Maybe it's the alcohol, numbing her again for a moment. "Aren't fucking real."
She giggles again, wheezing into a hiccup. Her ankles feel like they're tilting under her feet- like she'll fall if she doesn't sit now, and so she does, dropping down onto the sodden carpet on the floor with a wheezing giggle. It is still a giggle, right? It's just-- it's just, her eyes are burning again, and her face feels wet, and she's still hiccupping, and it's.
It's getting a little hard to tell.
(Why are you on the floor?)
"Because you aren't fucking real." She hiccups, and she either sobs or she giggles, and her face is stretching so wide it hurts, and she's not sure if it's grinning or screaming that's making it feel that way. "Because you aren't fucking real, it's me, it's just-- me, it's always been fucking me, and--"
(and?)
"And god help me. God, fucking help me. Please."
(Why?)
(You already drank all of your miracles away.)
Where?
The last late-staying customers of the night filter out the doors into the cold morning air, stumbling back against light that might as well burn. Some of them might regret their choices, already. Maybe just staying out until dawn. Maybe that last wine spritzer was unnecessary.
The hands they meet, helping them into chauffeured cars, are hired, of course. Bought with family loyalty, bought with family money, bought with illicitly gained goods-- but bought, all the same.
Others won't leave tonight. Some might not leave at all. A castle to avarice, a monument to greed- and oh, isn't that draw, just to some, stronger than any pressing need? To walk out of heaven, back into hell- no, it's no wonder they might balk at such a fall.
A kingdom of lies, but isn't it nice, to be courted by an illusion? Chase your dreams, they all say-- tucked away in a corner of Mercy's bay, last night's guests stumble away from that dream today.
A boat ride away, armored men in uniform pick their way through underground ruins. A flashlight lingers over a hand-welded sign, long enough for a camera to flash. Someone else is already photographing the ruined doorway, the crumpled sheet metal and broken concrete.
Someone's studiously not reacting to the stench rising from the fish scattered across the ground, smeared under rubble, impaled on glass. Someone has already called biohazard to the sight. The remains will be bagged and tagged in a few minutes. What's left will be incinerated tonight.
Beady eyes stare out from the remnants of the mouse cage. They're gone, when someone looks back to them-- just a lonely pile of old straw bedding, missing the toys that used to decorate it.
If they're smart, they'll wonder where all the animals that are supposed to be here have gone. If they're smart, they'll have wondered who would have risked the Geiger activity to come down here, bypassing spooks and nosy news crews.
They won't get answers any time convenient. But they'll wonder.
On a ferry pulling out of a Port Oakes Bay, a Bane Spider who really deserves more sleep than they usually get will open a bag of take-out this morning, and find that there's a sleeve of soft cookies in there this morning, decorated in black and orange seasonal icing to have spiders on their front. Halloween has already past- but the local bakers still have a stock of pre-dyed frosting to use up, it seems.
The air over the waters outside of Port Oakes will be cold, this morning. But the cookies will be still warm out of the oven in their paper sleeve, and the coffee will be fresh and hot enough to still be steaming after having a half cup of creamer upended into it, and, for a moment, at least, the sunrise will be bright, over the waters of Port Oakes.
The last of the morning crowd will be gone, by the time that sunrise has crept up over the roof of that club. No one will lay eyes on the small figure in the red hood who comes in through the back, except for an exasperated guard at the door. No one will tell her that she's too young to be in a place like this.
The elevator ride will feel long. She'll be half asleep on her feet by the time the doors open. By the time she makes it down the hall, to the second to last door on the right, she'll be tracing her path by feel, eyes too heavy to keep them open.
The room will be too dark to see when she comes in, after the closing door cuts away the beam of light that bounces off the floor to ceiling mirrors. She'll find her way to the bed by feel, not by sight; drawn by the cool warmth put off by a small shape already present.
She'll wrap around a fox like he's a teddy bear, and be asleep nearly before her head has hit the pillow. She won't think to wonder, later, who covered her with a forgotten blanket in her sleep. She won't be awake, to know which of the two potentials it might have been. She won't particularly care, in the end.
A bird beds down to nest in the fox's den, tucked away at the outskirts of the spider's web. In the heart of the flames, where she feels secure and safe, a child will dream. A company will search. A mother will pray. A field operative will wonder.
A child will sleep, unaware of the people searching for her-- and the only holders of the answer, disinclined to share.
