Phantom of the Paradise book character facts in order. I read it so you don’t have to…
CHAPTER 1 —
(Spoiler warnings).
1. Winslow’s teacher (Carmine Abrano) was a drunk. He was decapitated by a train while drunk. (The month was February according to chapter 6)
2. Winslow feels emotionally responsible for his death (because they had a difference of opinion in musical taste).
3. Winslow’s full cantata is 4 hours.
4. Winslow can learn a style of music in just 6 weeks.
5. Winslow doesn’t like bebop.
6. Winslow had bad grades and didn’t care for romance while at school.
7. Winslow doesn’t like nature and is quite possibly allergic to everything that’s not music.
8. Swan has a full name (Alan D. Swan).
9. At best Winslow ‘almost likes’ *some* of the music Swan produces.
10. Winslow was born in and lived in Dunphy, Maine
11. Winslow travels from Brattleboro (Vermont?) to New York to find Swan.)
12. One of Winslow’s nicknames was ‘Winnie’
13. Winslow sold all his things and ran away from home in order to start his music career.
14. Winslow’s father was a WWII veteran who sent time in Okinawa Japan.
15. Winslow has a younger sister.
16. Winslow’s mum’s name is Joan. She confirms Winslow has fallen into depression before, and thinks of her son is a ‘goonybird’.

CHAPTER 2 -
PODP book character facts in order.
(Spoiler warning.)
16. Winslow’s ‘Faust’ is not a direct translation of the famous opera. In Winslow’s opera Faust is American and renamed as ‘Foster’.
17. Winslow stays at the Allyn, a hotel popular with musicians when he first arrives in New York.
18. Winslow is described as having a Maine accent (so I might have been wrong about the Vermont thing?)
——————————————————————
CHAPTER 3 -
PODP book character facts in order.
(Spoiler warning.)
19. Philbin’s first name is Arnold
20. One of the Juicy Fruit’s is named Frejus.
21. Swan favours the Juicy Fruits because they are ‘good on tour’ and ‘tough’. He admits they can’t write decent songs themselves but they can handle the pace of intense show business.
22. Winslow has blue eyes (in the book)
23. Winslow is from Maine. His ancestors were farmers.
24. Swan spends most of his time in LA, but the story takes place in New York.
25. Phoenix’s real name is Ellan Rado. ‘Phoenix’ is her stage name.
26. In the film, Winslows first played song is titled ‘Faust’. In the book it is titled ‘Foster’s Lament’. This is to match Winslow’s personal reimagining of Faust, which his cantata is based on.
27. Winslow lies to Pheonix, telling her he is 20.
28. Winslow’s opera contains themes of “incest, along with rape, madness and other intense human behaviour.”
——————————————————————
CHAPTER 4 -
PODP book character facts in order.
(Spoiler warning.)
29. Winslow’s opera would take up 3 LPs in its entirety (NOTE: A 12-inch LP (long-playing) vinyl record typically holds around 22 minutes of audio per side at standard playback speed (33 1/3 revolutions per minute). So, a full LP can hold approximately 44 minutes of audio in total.)
30. Every doubt or mistreatment erupts within Winslow mentally when he looses his temper.
31. Winslow was bullied by a boy named Alec Smith as a kid. He poured syrup in his electric piano.
32. Winslow has a perfect ‘idetic memory’. Aka photographic memory.
33. Pheonix stole $150 from Winslow’s pocket (most likely for drugs).
——————————————————————
CHAPTER 5 -
PODP book character facts in order.
(Spoiler warning.)
34. At this point in the story Winslow is wearing thermal underwear. Heavy navy blue suit pants, black sneakers, a large black cape (he bought for himself) and a leather cap.
35. ‘Swanage’ (Swan’s estate) is located just off the Hudson River and takes up the space of a large city block in a fine residential area. It is enclosed by eight foot stone walls.
36. Swan’s estate houses multiple recording studios, offices, guard’s quarters, gardens, pools and is impossibly gothic with its many towers.
37. Winslow’s opera is named ‘Foster’ (instead of ‘Faust’).
38.

CHAPTER 6 -
PODP book character facts in order.
(Spoiler warning.)
34. ‘Several songs’ of Winslow’s opera are produced Swan’s way.
35. Swan recognises Winslow’s music as good but flawed and with no market.
36. One of the songs reached number 3 on the charts.
37. The name of the Prison Winslow is at in the book is ‘Ossining prison’ (which is a real prison with a real history. In the film it is ‘Sing Sing’ which is a nickname for the same prison)
38. It is explicitly stated that Winslow was not raped in prison. ‘Though he had not been raped, there had been a series of violent incidents revealing and developing that violent aspect of Winslow.’
39. Winslow has a mangled memory of events over the last ‘two months’ (the period of time between his arriving in NY and being imprisoned.) ‘He had only a vague sense that he was a young musician from Dunphy, Maine, who had been stiddenly and violently fucked over by a very dangerous man for no particularly good reason.’
40. Winslow worked in the kitchen of the state prison.
41. Winslow put all of his spare time (presumably because he couldn’t play music) into working out, to better defend himself.
42. Winslow made a point to behave well while in Prison (to better his chances at getting out).
43. While in prison Winslow saw a ‘guidance person’ biweekly, for ten minute sessions, who advised he work in retail sails. This ‘guidence person’ also… ‘ simply could not believe any of Winslow's story, and had even convinced Winslow that he had a very dangerous talent for hallucination . . . the runaway tongue of a pathological liar. ‘
44. It wasn’t until Winslow heard his music again on the radio that be believed his own story once more.
45. Winslow escaped after 4 months.
46. Winslow’s cell mate was named Charles Otis. The cel mate in the next cel over (who owned the transistor radio Winslow overheard) was named Tallaferro.
47. Winslow had the bottom bunk in jail.
48. Charles Otis story was… he was a ‘professor who had poisoned his wife and had disposed of the bottle in a corner trash can, where it had been found the next day.’
49. Otis helped Winslow escape on Winslow’s request. Winslow asked for Charles to… ‘put him in one of the outgoing cartons from the license plate department’. Otis went the extra mile to also secure Winslow ‘a hammer and crowbar with which Winslow could smash his way out of the truck; and seventy dollars too.’
50. The truck got Winslow 30 miles out of jail. When he escaped the truck he fled to the woods of upstate New York ‘which were very like the woods of Maine’. (Note. They would be nothing like the woods if Maine. even in th 1970s, you're in the north north suburbs of New York City, so it's not that rural. even in the woods, you're not far from people.)
51. Winslow escaped in August (it was a hot day).
52. Winslow walks 18 miles in the woods and arrives at Croton where he took a bus to New York.
53. At some point in the next week Winslow robs a clothing store on the upper west side, accumulating close to $1000
54. Winslow spent time at 42nd street Library learning to make explosives. He ultimately purchases twenty guaranteed sticks of dynamite for $200 from ‘black revolutionists’ in the East Village ‘who needed capital for their cocaine business’
55. Winslow learns all about breaking and entering and sneaking around unnoticed while in jail.
56. Winslow breaks in to the record factory at 4am
57. In the book there is no crush injury from the record press to Winslow’s face — it is exclusively a burn which is described as being applied by a ‘hot steel plate’ then the burn is splashed with hot vinyl. This blinds Winslow’s left side (the opposite side as in the film).
58. Winslow is shot through his thigh before he leaves the record factory.
59. Winslow can apparently vault an 8 foot wall with 1 functional eye.
——————————————————————
CHAPTER 7 -
PODP book character facts in order.
(Spoiler warning.)
34. Swan had a fatalist belief system.
35. The Paradise is set to take place x2 weeks after Winslow’s death.
36. Winslow accumulates a cult following in underground circles for his work ‘post mortum’
(If people show interest in this I will continue it through to the end of the book)
