Ah jeez, that was one hell of a day for that guy.
Yes and no. Where do I even being...
Okay. So this place up in Greenland called, uh... I'm gonna butcher this so bad, Hjeilhornhentrotnenheim, has an engineering museum, right? Right, and the guy in charge, his name is, ah fuck this is gonna be bad too ..., Hansinguaq Bjerresvontsgaardsen (I'm just gonna call him Hans from now on because uh yeah, no), collects all the things not fit for display in his personal transport ship. He's essentially converted it into his private mobile museum.
Not long after we established diplomatic channels and preliminary trade routes, Hans eagerly went off on his own to visit Alien equivalents to museums and such. Spent a solid three weeks traveling, sight-seeing, and adding things to his collection.
During a stop on the outer reaches of Coalition space his computer blue screened and forcibly shut down the reactor and pretty much wiped his communication array address book among other less relevant components. And no, I have no clue why he went so far out. He's 46, midlife crisis is my guess, telling him to go out on daring adventures or whatever. Anyway, he couldn't restart the fusion reactor while the inhibitor rod chambers were open, they open and shoot out the star canceler in an emergency shutdown, but one was stuck with the rod half-way in, so Hans had to manually open the reactor and fix it by hand.
Problem is, his transport ship, the Veritable Greenhorn, is fairly big, and the reactor's outer diameter was about 37 meters. Even in zero-g that's a lot of mass for one person to move, not to mention how much force you'd need to pry out a hyper dense metal alloy rod from a gate meant to withstand the pressure of a star right next to it. But he did have a lot mechanical power at his disposal, it just needed to be... rearranged.
Now, he did have backup generators that quietly hum in the background like on every Human vessel, but these are passive and nowhere near enough to charge the hyperdrive even if he could tell it where to go, let alone power machinery to counter a thousand ton jammed deadbolt. He needed something that had a kick to it, something you could really rev beyond its limits just long enough. He needed his V6s and V8s.
After almost two days of DIY engineering details I won't bore you with because I fell asleep when he explained them himself, Hans fired up the engines. It was a very tedious five hours of the engines rythmically tugging the deadbolt a tenth of a milimeter open and what is basically a massive jackhammer pummeling the rod back in. At one point he ran out of gas and was forced to sacrifice his alcohol collection.
Suffice to say it barely worked, all of the machinery he cobbled together became practically unusable, but it worked and he was able to restart the fusion reactor.
Oh, he didn't come home or anything by the way. Like I guess, midlife crisis. If anything, success has made him think nothing can get in the way of his Galactic exploration quest.
So that's the story. No, he didn't use combustion engines to start the reactor or anything, but lacking any other means to fix a problem I honestly didn't know could happen, the petrol guzzlers gave him the right kind of horsepower.
By the way, if you get a chance to tour the Veritable Greenhorn, I'd recommend it. I can't even begin to describe how that contraption looks, it's one of the main displays. I guarantee it's the most specific purpose built and rough pieces of Human engineering you will ever see.

Perception was hard to pinpoint. Back in Los Angeles, the smells and lights and noises had proved it so once. Once â when sheâd been a little girl.
Back then, Marcy hadnât a clue on sensory details. She knew some simple definitions, what theyâd entail, but experience found a way to become her teacher eventually. The teacher called itself December 11, 2012.
Her family navigated tarmac streets with fuzzy muffs on their ears. Marcy had held on to her motherâs sleeve, trying not to get caught in the waves of coats as her eyes grazed on the skyline, at the glass shimmering red and green. And this would be the time where her fingers loosened, gripped nothing but air.
And Marcy was all alone. All alone in this concrete jungle with the initials of L and A.
Sheâd stand where she was, limbs stiff to the bone. No clear route saved her. No stranger asked if sheâd gotten lost. And Marcy broke down not by the fear of strangers nor the touch of aliens, but the talking. The clatter of shoes. Stenches of mingled hickory with garbage, exhaust, petrol, the screams of jackhammers, yellow hard hats, yellow taxis, the sour tongue taste that gripped her from mouth to brain stem.Â
Then the synapses went shot.
Like pistols, everything slowed and quickened and died. She didnât remember when the world came back, or if the ground ever caught her. But in this suspension, where her hands shook and waded through pained slog, Marcy waited for time to come back.
And time slammed into her â all cold, wet, drowning.
Then submerged her completely.
Darkness swam her vision. She kicked her legs, bucked her body to whatever direction, and swallowed fire. Everything hurt until she realized where she truly was, she then eased her muscles, took a pivot toward what she believed was upward instead of down, and hacked out the water when air struck her emergence.

She had said she needed space and, despite how it pained him not to message her or look at his phone frantically every time it pinged, he had done just that. He was surprised one evening, a few weeks after they had spoken on the phone, to find she had texted him asking whether he had remembered to pay off his part on their shared credit card before the interest rate kicked in, but he tried not to read too much into this. She had always looked out for him and it was more than likely she had set a reminder on her phone for when the bill was due. He had sat through a group dinner, organised by the oldest member and his girlfriend a week later, without much luster. While Yoongi was unsurprisingly absent, the others had come with their partners and questions on the whereabouts of his own were quickly dodged and forgotten.Â
A few days later, while he was drying himself off from the shower, his phone rang, catching him off guard when he read her name on the screen. Fifteen minutes later, after hastily dressing in a daze, he was pulling up at the edge of a side road behind a blue Renault, its hazard lights flashing.Â
âAre you okay?â Jungkook asked as the passenger door was pulled open, a cold stream of morning air hitting him in the otherwise cosy vehicle.Â
âYeah.â Young-soon muttered cautiously. âThe car was squeaking the whole way, and when I pulled over, it wouldnât start again.â As she climbed into the car, Jungkook observed her office attire; a black skirt which framed the curves of her hips and backside, paired with a flattering white blouse. He quickly looked away. âThanks for picking me up, no one I work with lives this side of the city.â She quickly explained, clearly embarrassed.Â
Jungkook shook his head, it was nothing. âShouldnât we wait with the car?â He asked, gesturing towards the blue vehicle.Â
âThe break down company is on its wayâŚâÂ
âDid you give them the right licence plate?â He asked automatically, an old memory tugging at the back of his mind. He pushed it away as she rolled her eyes with a smile.Â
âIf Iâm late to work again my boss will put me on a warning.â She explained with a sigh as he started the engine and pulled away from the curb, rejoining the rush-hour traffic at the end of the street where it joined the main road.Â
He frowned. âHave you had a lot of time off recently?â
The short silence which followed made his heart sink as he realised the cause of her absences.Â
âIâm sorry I missed the dinnerâŚâ She eventually said. âMin-seo invited me by text.â
The apologetic tone of her voice told him she was serious and he couldnât help the thud of his heart.Â
âI told them you were sick.â He said, not knowing if this was the right thing to do. A pause filled the air.Â
âDo they know?â She asked.Â
âI didnât know what to tell them.â He shrugged, feeling pathetic as another silence stretched out. âItâs this way isnât it?â He nodded towards another side street.Â
âTake a right.â She confirmed as he indicated and carefully turned the corner, avoiding a stream of pedestrians on their way to work.Â
âTheyâve not been paying much attention to me anyway.â He murmured as they passed a row of tall offices, trying to maneuver the car through the rows of tightly packed parked cars.Â
âWhy?â She asked interestedly.Â
âYoongiâs girlfriend broke up with him.â
âOh.â She hesitated. âI didnât know he was dating.â
âNeither did we.â He shrugged. âI kind of thought...I saw him with a girl, butâŚâ He trailed off, not knowing how to explain the surprise he was witnessed at the theatre, over half a year before.Â
âIs he okay?â She asked softly.Â
âHeâs just getting on with things.â He paused. âBut I donât think so.â He finished, honestly.Â
The woman beside him fell silent for a moment before asking. âAnd how about you?â
He turned to look at her, meeting her gaze for a moment with big, brown eyes, before turning back to the road. His heart was jackhammering in his chest, suddenly realising that this could be it. âDoes that mean youâve come to a decision?â
âKookâŚâ She whispered sadly.Â
âWhat I didâŚâ He felt a lump rise in his throat as he tried to explain, needing her to know. âI canât take it backâŚbut you donât know how much I want to.â
âMe tooâŚâ She agreed wistfully.Â
He felt his eyes sting and blinked fiercely, trying to clear his vision as he pleaded. âI donât want us to be overâŚI donât.â
âI know.â She said quietly.Â
He fought on, knowing if he didnât say it now, he might not get another chance. âI know you donât love me right now and I canât expect you to...but do you think you ever could?â He asked.Â
She took a moment to reply, wiping the corner of her eye. âIf I didnât love you, this wouldnât be so hardâŚâ She admitted, her own voice trembling. He met her gaze once more and saw that her eyes were glimmering with tears. He wanted nothing more than to reach for her, to take her hand in his.Â
âKeep your eyes on the road.â She warned softly.Â
âSorry.â He muttered, turning back to the street. He took the next left from memory and the skyline turned dark as a row of shiny, glass buildings blocked out what remained of the sun. âIâm moving apartment next month.â He eventually said, breaking the silence.Â
âWhatâs wrong with your old one?â She asked with a smirk, her voice normal once again.Â
âNothing.â He said, thinking. âThis one has a home gym.â
âIs that all?â She teased.Â
âIt was a good price.â He shrugged.Â
âYou can drop me off at this corner. My buildingâs right there.â She pointed to the metal sign which hung above the revolving doors of a modern complex he recognised immediately. He had only been inside once, on the day they met, but he remembered the layout of the foyer vividly, and how she had looked when he first caught glimpse of her behind the reception desk.Â
âRight.â He said, checking the wing-mirror before tucking the car against the curb. âDo you need a lift home?â He asked as she unbuckled her seatbelt.Â
âI can get the bus.â She offered automatically.Â
âItâs on my way back to the studio.â He said, hopefully.Â
âOkay thenâŚâ There was a bout of uncertainty in her voice but she agreed. âI finish at five. I might be a few minutes late.â
âIâll pick you up here?âÂ
âOkay.â She smiled, closing the door behind her. He watched to make sure she was safely inside the revolving doors before he pulled away, already anticipating seeing her again later that day.
PART TWOÂ
(Set a few days following the events of âCan we work out together more often?â)
The routine continued for the next few months and slowly, almost cautiously, they had started seeing each other outside of the car and their twice-daily journey. The sex had come as a bit of a surprise to them both, with the first time happening during a tour of his new apartment. âMy neighbour has a garage.â She shrugged as she unlocked the wooden door and closed it behind them both. As always when he visited her, the loftiness of the apartment took him by surprise. The building was much older than any he had ever inhabited, built during the days when space was not so much an issue.Â
âI thought a new fan belt wouldnât take that long to fit.â He admitted, realising that a part of him had known or at least strongly suspected that the car had been fixed weeks, if not months before.Â
âSo why didnât you say anything?â She asked with a smile, leading him to the circular table which stood in the centre of the living room.Â
He shook his head with a cautious grin, not wanting to sound too sentimental or sappy.Â
âSit down.â She gestured softly. âWhat are you having?â
âWhatever you are.â
He watched as she headed into the adjoining kitchen and switched on the electric kettle. It hummed to life as she spooned instant coffee into two matching mugs, part of a four piece set she had treated herself to with the gift vouchers her parents had got for her birthday. Pastel polka dots adorned the ceramic.Â
âWere you scared it would break down again?â He asked, calling into the kitchen as she returned with the mugs.Â
âNo.â She set them down gently and took her place opposite him on a wicker-backed chair. âItâs nice to have company on my way to work.â She confessed with a blush, before adding: âThe radio in my carâs broken.â
His lips turned up at the corners as he blew onto the dark surface of the liquid, cooling it down. âIf you got it fixed would you still need me?â
âNo.â She admitted, trailing a finger along the edge of the mug. âBut Iâd still want you there.â
His stomach grew warm as he looked at the table, mirroring her awkward stance but unable to help his lips stretching in a wide toothy grin, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He listened as she continued.
âI missed you.â She sighed. âIâm sorry I left last week, after the showerâŚâ
âI understand why.â He quickly said, meaning it as he said it.
âIt just felt best not to rush things.â She shrugged, taking a sip of coffee. The sound of heavy footsteps as someone from the apartment above descended the stairs filled the space, cutting the silence.
âDo you regret it?âÂ
âNo.â She replied automatically, trying to find the right way of putting it. âI was relieved.â
âWhy?â
She met his eyes across the table. âThat you could still make me feel like that.âÂ
His gaze softened with her own as a moment of understanding passed between them.Â
âItâs getting lateâŚâ She eventually muttered, a little regretfully.Â
âI should go. You have to be up early.â He remembered, finishing his coffee and getting to his feet.Â
âThank you.â She whispered, knowing that he desperately wanted to stay but was taking the initiative to be sensible. The last few months had been incredibly hard for her, but she thought things just might be okay so long as they took things one step at a time. She pressed a lingering kiss to his warm cheek, inhaling his sweet aftershave as he hovered by the door.Â
âDid you want a lift tomorrow into work?â He offered with a timid grin, a hint of mirth in his voice.Â
She smiled in return. âYes please.â
PART THREE
(Set a few days following the events of âJinâs Bachelor/Stag Partyâ)
âWhatâs wrong with the pink dress?â Jungkook asked as discordant scraping of metal against metal filled his ears. Young-soon was pushing a row of coat hangers aside on the narrow rail, trying to view the garments which hung there. The boutique was small and, thankfully, almost deserted considering it was a weekend.Â
âWith the frills?â She asked, turning to him as her hand hovered on the thin fabric of a cerulean blue dress which had stood out to her among the others.Â
âYeah.â He shrugged.Â
She rolled her eyes, turning back to the garment which she picked delicately from the hanger, draping it over her forearm. âI wore it to my auntâs sixtieth birthday partyâŚâ She murmured, walking towards the pink velvet curtain which framed the storeâs single fitting room. She pulled it closed behind her as she faced the full length mirror. âI thought I should probably buy something new.â Slipping off her sweater, she turned to the buckle of her jeans. âAnd I hate it.â She muttered under her breath.Â
âDo you want to know who's the best man?â Jungkook called through the barrier of the curtain, observing the sound of a zipper being undone.Â
âYou?â She guessed with a grin.Â
âNo. YoongiâŚâ He said, absently killing time by peering into a glass cabinet of jewellery and accessories. The glisten of a bridal tiara caught his eye in the centre of the display. âHeâs been working hard on his speech.â He finished.
PART FOURÂ
(Set in the evening following âJinâs Weddingâ)
The evening was naturally drawing to a close as the guests slowly began to filter from the room, the soft, melodic ballad of a long-ago singer filling the space as the last of the remaining couples clung to each other on the dance floor. Jungkook nodded at Jimin and Ara as he passed them, the older memberâs hand resting softly against the young womanâs backside as they swayed in time to the music. Both Yoongi and Namjoon were absent, having already gone to bed. The newlyweds were standing by the bar, both finishing a final glass of champagne. 7. How can we check for corrosion of the storage tank plate without having to take the tank out of service? BACKGROUND/CONTEXT The integrity of a hydrocarbon storage tank is of utmost importance as the stored substances can be highly volatile. Therefore, it is critical for companies to regularly inspect the tanks to check for any signs of corrosion. Current solutions require the tanks to be taken off the running process plant for prolonged periods of time  before using equipment to scan the bottom plate of the tank. If the plate is thinner than the specified standard, that would mean corrosion has occurred and replacement/repairs need to be done. However, this is a very time-intensively and cost-ineffective procedure.
REQUIREMENTS We are looking for a robotic/mechanical solution that can achieve the following:
Measure the thickness of the storage tankâs bottom plate or identify corrosion on the bottom place  while the tank is in operation Able to fully maneuver in a tank with >300mm of sludge DESIRED SOLUTION A robot/machine that can reliably check for corrosion in the hydrocarbon storage tank while the tank is in operation.
8. How can we remove highly fused agglomerated catalyst in an inert and confined environment? BACKGROUND/CONTEXT Catalyst used in hydro-finer reactors build up over time. As part of the "cleaning" process, the reactors will have to be taken out of service, before they are filled with inert gases to ensure the safety of the worker entering the confined space. Then, the worker will manually break apart the fused catalyst particles using jackhammers, before manually removing the loosened waste. The entire process is extremely time-consuming and cost-ineffective as revenue is forgone when the equipment is taken out of service. Potential solutions - e.g., high pressure water jetting and carbodumping, have proven ineffective as they did not decrease the time needed to carry out the removal of the agglomerated catalyst.
REQUIREMENTS We seek a solution (ideally robotic/mechanical) that can accomplish the following:
Reduce human exposure in the agglomerated catalyst removal process Able to exert enough force to loosen the agglomerated catalyst for removal Can achieve the above as or more efficiently than human workers DESIRED SOLUTION A robot that can efficiently remove agglomerated catalysts in inert, confined environments with little to no human involvement.

By developing an automated robotic refueling system, customers can enjoy a safe, swift and convenient refueling experience at the stations. Also, an automated refueling system can offer safe, reliable and consistent services to customers by reducing human intervention and accurately calibrated refueling.
REQUIREMENTS We are looking for an automated solution to refueling that can substantially enhance the refueling experiences at petrol stations and efficiency for users while also decreasing on-site costs. Speed, safety and convenience are key.

Careful inspections are needed to ensure the tankâs integrity. However, this currently requires the tank to be taken out of service which results in an inefficient use of company resources. Additional tank units would be required to fill the void of those being inspected. Therefore, there is a need for a technology that can meticulously inspect running live tanks remotely or autonomously. The inspections must, at the very least, include Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL).
REQUIREMENTS The proposed solution should be able to sufficiently inspect running live hydrocarbon tanks without needing to take the tanks out of service. The solutions chosen to progress to the final rounds will be put under the following tests: > Inspect a running live water tank at ambient temperatures > If Successful, inspect live hydrocarbon tanks without taking tanks out of service
DESIRED SOLUTION A technology that is able to non-disruptively inspect running live tanks.
11. How to remotely / autonomously paint confined spaces? BACKGROUND/CONTEXT It is critical that storage tanks maintain their integrity over the course of their use. As the stored materials are often volatile substances, a leak or any corrosive damage to the tank can have serious consequences. Coating the tanks with protective paint to prevent corrosion may seem like a simple task, but it presents unique challenges.
- Firstly, there is a real possibility of toxic fumes gathering at the bottom of the tank. These toxic vapors can be harmful or even fatal to the painting crew that enters the confined space.
- Furthermore, the coating material itself may emanate toxic fumes during the painting process which can quickly accumulate within the tank.
- Lastly, as some tanks are quite large, there must be fall protection systems in place to prevent accidents.
While there are solutions currently in place to address these issues, they significantly increase the amount of time it takes to complete the job hence increasing the amount of time the tanks are not in use. These challenges would no longer be a factor if there was a way to remotely or autonomously paint the confined spaces without the need of human entry into the tank.
REQUIREMENTS The proposed solution should address the following: > Be able to remotely/autonomously paint the confined tank spaces (all directions) > Does not require human entry in the tank > Just as or more efficient (less time spent) as using a human crew

BACKGROUND/CONTEXT Fuel storage tanks accumulate large amounts of hydrocarbon sludge, sediments, and scales that can reduce the working capacity of the tanks by taking up valuable storage space and clogging pipes. Current methods to remove hydrocarbon sludge require taking the entire system out of service and can potentially expose workers to hazardous substances. This results in a huge loss in potential revenue and increases the risk of accidents. While mechanized methods utilizing big pumps with cleaning nozzles, and tank cleaning robots have been proposed, none of these solutions are capable of cleaning the pipes and tanks without having to take the system out of service at all or for extended periods of time.
REQUIREMENTS We seek a solution that can achieve the following:
