Secret Relationship (Izzy Hands x Gn!Reader)
"He's looking over here again" Swede hummed, making the rest of you pause and look around to see what he was talking about. You held back a small laugh when you saw Izzy standing at the top of the stairs, watching over your small group as you worked.
"Probably making sure we don't mess anything up" Roach rolled his eyes as the four of you got back to work, ignoring the intense stare coming from the first hand.
"Or waiting for us to mess up so he has an excuse to get on our arses about something" Frenchie added, taking the rolled up rope from Swede.
"He's probably just watching over the crew. It is his job after all" you reasoned, shaking your head at them. Though, of course you knew that it wouldn't be the first time Izzy was purposely watching out for the crew to make mistakes.
"Yeah, yeah, sure" Roach agreed sarcastically, folding his arms over his chest as he lent back against the railing of the ship.
Once the three men were distracted enough, you looked over in Izzy's direction, giving him a smile. He simply nodded in return before turning his attention away from your group. You bit back a smile at his search for acknowledgement before conversation brought your attention back to the men you were with.
"I'd rather him be watching than getting all pissy with us. He hasn't been so bad lately" Frenchie commented, earning a few nods and hums of agreement. The crew didn't know what had changed in the first hand but for, at least, the last month he man had been a lot more bearable. Not as lenient as they would have liked but certainly less infuriating.
"Maybe Blackbeard is being nicer to him" Roach joked.
"Nah, pretty sure Ed is still giving all his attention to Stede" Frenchie shook his head, Swede agreeing.
"Maybe you should just take advantage of him being in a good mood and not pry into it too much" you suggested, hoping that the three men would stop theorising about Izzy's change in behaviour.
"...you know something, don't you?" Roach looked at you, his brow furrowing as he assessed you.
"What? No, what would I know?" you scoffed, wishing it had sounded a little more believable.
"You do!" Frenchie exclaimed, completely turning his attention to you.
"I don't" you protested.
"You have to tell us" Swede insisted. Goddamn Stede for teaching these men how to communicate and share things with each other.
"There's nothing to tell!" you knew you didn't sound convincing but you were determined to not spill any secrets.
Before the three men could question you any further, a familiar voice called your name. You turned quickly, seeing Izzy approaching, his face set in a hard expression. Perhaps he had over heard some of the conversation
"Duty calls" you shrugged back at the three men before hurrying off to see what Izzy wanted, leaving the trio to try to figure out what you weren't telling them.
-
Ivan and Fang shared a confused look, at a loss of what next step to take, before noticing Lucius and Black Pete standing over at the side of the deck. "You guys seen Izzy? Captain wants him" Ivan's question gained their attention as they walked over.
"No...haven't seen him for a while actually. Was just cherishing it" Lucius told them with a sarcastic smile, making the two men chuckle.
"Think I last saw him yellin' at Buttons about something, haven't seen him since" Black Pete told them, shrugging slightly. Honestly most of the crew were happy to be free of him for a little while.
"Try to find Y/n, they might know. Izzy's been on their ass a lot lately, maybe they'll know where he's gone off too" Lucius suggested, coming to the realisation that he hadn't seen you today either.
"They're probably in their cabin, think they had watch duty last night" Pete told them. Well, that explained your absence. Ivan and Fang nodded, thanking them for the suggestion, before heading off to find you.
Coming to the door of your cabin, Ivan knocked but got no response from inside.
"Maybe they aren't there" Fang hummed, frowning a little. Where was everyone going?
"Should we look?" Ivan asked, unsure of what to do.
"Bit intrusive...maybe their sleeping" Fang shook his head, he didn't want to disturb you if you were working all night.
"What if they've gone missing too?" Ivan looked to Fang with wide eyes, the two men beginning to become suspicious about the disappearances.
"You're right...alright, just a quick peak to make sure they're alright" Fang nodded, figuring it was better to check that you were okay instead of just leaving.
They cautiously opened the door with a quiet creek, only to pause and gawk at the sight they were met with. They had certainly found you, but they had also found Izzy.
The two of you were laying on the cot of your dim cabin, your head tucked in against Izzy's shoulder and his head resting on top of yours. Your arms were wrapped around each other as you both slept peacefully. The two men had been working for Izzy Hands for a long time now but they had never seen him look so...peaceful, so relaxed.
They quickly closed the door in their shock and panic of being caught, causing it to shut louder than they would have liked, before scurrying back up to the deck of the ship.
Lucius and Black Pete's conversation was once again interrupted when Ivan and Fang scampered back over to them with wide eyes.
"You found them?" Black Pete asked with a small frown, seeing that something must have happened to make them look so...surprised.
"Uh yeah..." Ivan nodded slightly, rubbing the back of his neck.
"...both of them actually" Fang finished for him.
"Oh, well, job done" Pete nodded, still not getting what their reaction was about.
"Where were they then? They must have been hiding away somewhere" Lucius questioned, raising an eyebrow as he looked between them both.
"Uh..."
"Well..."
The two mean looked between each other, both of them obviously wanting to share what they saw but also very aware of how Izzy might react to them running their mouths. Before they could make a decision to talk or not, the dreaded call of their names came.
"Fang! Ivan!" Izzy called as he walked up onto the deck, anger clear in his voice as he stared down the two men. The two pirates turned to him, freezing on the spot. "A word" it wasn't a question, it was an order to follow him so they dis so without question. Lucius and Pete looked at each other curiously, now even more interested in what had gotten that reaction from them.
Despite all of Izzy's warnings and threats, it was only a matter of time (a few days, really) before Ivan and Fang slipped up. After all, Lucius can be pretty convincing when it comes from drawing information out of the other crew members. And as soon as Lucius knew, the rest of the crew slowly started to find out.
-
"Izzy's watching us again" Frenchie mumbled, making you laugh quietly to yourself.
"Don't worry, Loverboy only has eyes for one of us here" Lucius teased, making you pause and look at him with widened eyes. Roach just chuckled, nudging you a little rougher than necessary.
"Ivan and Fang?" you asked with a sigh, it didn't take a genius to realise that they blabbed. You knew they would eventually, even when Izzy told you about all the threats he had made to ensure your secret was safely kept.
"Just Fang, actually. I asked to sketch him again and he told me everything" Lucius told you with a proud little smile.
"Seductress" you teased him with a playful smirk.
"Looks who's talking" Lucius smirked right back.
"Whatever..." you rolled your eyes before warning, "just don't let him here you calling him that, he probably won't be a fan."
"Doesn't matter. I think you've made him soft" Lucius shrugged, and a part of you wished you could see Izzy's face if he had heard that.
"I didn't make him anything" you told him and you meant it. You hadn't made Izzy into anything different, you just let him be himself.
A few days had passed and the initial teasing about your new relationship had eased up, now you could actually be in the same area as Izzy without receiving playful looks from the rest of the crew.
The two of you now stood at the head of the ship, just out of the way enough to avoid the curious stares from the crew. "Knew they couldn't keep a secret" Izzy sneered, not liking all the strange attention he had been receiving since the crew found out about you both.
"It's a big ship but it's not that big. Somebody was bound to find out eventually. 'least we don't have to sneak around so much anymore" you reminded him with a small shrug. You knew it had only been a matter of time, so you might as well focus on the positives.
"Better keep their fucking mouths shut though" he muttered, still looking out at the waves rather than at you.
"Can't promise that" you playfully nudged your arm against his, earning a small smile from him.
The small amount of peace was interrupted when an arm was slung over your shoulder and you were pulled into somebody's body, the surprise making you jump slightly.
"Why didn't you tell me, Iz?"
You let out a small sigh when you realised what was going on. Ed had managed to sneak up on you both, throwing his arms around yours and Izzy's shoulders, pulling you both into the sides of his taller frame.
"Fucking hell" Izzy muttered to himself but you could only chuckle, knowing Ed meant well.
"I'm your captain...and we're friends, you should have told me" Ed insisted, giving you both a slight squeeze that only seemed to irritate Izzy further.
"We were just figuring things out, getting used to it, y'know?" you excused, hoping that would satisfy Ed.
"I suppose that makes sense" Ed sighed, accepting your reasoning. "Anyway, congratulations to you both, I'm happy for you" he gave you both another squeeze before letting you both go.
Izzy returned a mumbled 'thanks' as he straightened out his waistcoat again.
"I think you'll be good for him" Ed patted your shoulder, giving you a proud smile, his comment making Izzy huff as he began to walk away.
"Oh!" Ed turned back as if he suddenly remembered something, making you both look back at him again. "Stede says that we have to have a double date soon, he's very excited" and that was what made Izzy snap.
"Fuck off" Izzy scoffed, turning his back to the captain and leaning his elbows against the railing of the ship.
"I'll convince him" you assured Ed with a quick wink, making him smile before leaving.
"We are not going on a...a double date with them" Izzy seethed out the words like they were something offensive.
"Well...you haven't actually taken me out yet, Iz" you pointed out with a slightly dramatic sigh, shifting closer to him against the railing.
"We're on a ship, where do you want me to take you?" Izzy asked. His tone sounded like he thought it was ridiculous but you noticed some unknown emotion flashing behind his eyes when he glanced at you.
"Hey, I'm just kidding" you assured him gently, taking hold of his hand and resting your head against his shoulder. "I love the moments we get together, I think they're good enough dates" you smiled softly when you felt the tensions leaving his muscles, his shoulders relaxing. "Perfect, actually" you insisted sweetly, hearing Izzy let out a small breath before kissing the top of your head.
"You're going to make me go, aren't you?" Izzy asked quietly, clearly giving in to the inevitable.
"As if we actually have a choice" you scoffed quietly. "Let's just make the captains happy and then we'll never have to do it again, okay?" you tried to reason but he was obviously not happy about it, grumbling under his breath to himself. You lifted your head from his shoulder, leaning up to kiss the little tattoo under his eye, "please?"
Sometimes Izzy thought you just knew how to play him because he barely had to even think about his response. "...fine" even as he agreed, he did so with a huff just so you knew he wasn't pleased with the idea.
-
Despite having your little secret out for a little while and most of the bothersome questions easing up, some members of the crew would still try to annoy you. It's playfully and you know that, at least when their questions and comments are directed at you and not Izzy.
"Blink twice if you're being held against your will" Wee John demanded, bringing his face closer to yours to watch for the slightest twitch of your eyes.
But you accepted the challenge, staring back at him unblinking.
When he realised that you weren't going to blink even once out of pure stubbornness, he caught you off guard by blowing in your eyes, forcing you to blink.
"John!" you chastised, blinking rapidly to soothe your eyes before glaring at him.
"So, like...he's nice to you?" Wee John asked, squinting like he couldn't even picture Izzy being nice to someone.
"He's always been nice to them, at least nicer than he is to us" Frenchie reminded him, wondering how he hadn't suspected something earlier. Izzy had always been less harsh on you, more forgiving of mistakes. Honestly, they should have noticed something was different.
"Yes, guys, he's nice to me" you promised them with a small chuckle. "Look, as much as I'm enjoying your little interrogation, I have work to do" you told them playfully before walking away, shaking your head when you heard them whispering among themselves.
You headed down into the ship, walking into the storage room in order to take note of the stocks. You were about halfway through checking the provisions when the door quickly opened and closed behind you.
You turned at the sound, a little mused smile tugging at the corner of your mouth when you saw Izzy. "You looking for me?" you asked teasingly, wondering why he had seemed to be in such a rush.
"Avoiding Edward...but I'm not complaining" he answered honestly with a shrug, making you laugh.
"Trying to get you to play nice with Stede again?" you questioned, already knowing the answer.
"Stede fucking Bonnet" Izzy seethed, and you didn't need him to say anything else to know that your assumptions were right.
"He's not that bad, I could have ended up on a much worse ship than this. I'm kinda thankful for him" you defended the captain.
"Yeah, you would be" he rolled his eyes, running his hand through his hair.
You put on a mock expression of offence. "Now, what is that supposed to mean?" you pouted, arms crossing over your chest.
"You're so...nice" Izzy told you once he decided on the appropriate word.
"Oh no, how terrible for you" you rolled your eyes before turning back to continue checking the provisions.
There was a short silence before you heard the shuffling of feet. "Sorry" Izzy muttered as he slipped his arms around your waist, resting his chin against your shoulder as he pressed his chest against your back, "didn't mean any harm."
"I know, I'm just playing with you" you smiled, turning your head to press a kiss to his cheek.
Feeling him slouch a little against your back, his body relaxing, you spun around in his arms and wrapped yours around his neck.
"Want to hide out here with me for a while?" you offered, playing with the ends of his hair.
"If you don't mind, Love" Izzy smiled tenderly at you, he sort of smile you knew nobody else got to see.
You chuckled fondly, kissing him gently. "But I have to work, or our first hand will get all mad" you pouted, beginning to pull away from him.
"You're a hard worker, one break won't kill anyone" Izzy insisted, catching you by the waist and pulling you back with ease.
"I take it that's an order?" you mused.
"It is" Izzy nodded, smiling and letting out a soft sigh when you embrace him properly, enjoying the calmness of being with you. "I still enjoy our time alone, even if we don't have to be anymore" he confessed, nose nuzzling into your hair, holding you a little closer to his body.
Sure, it had been nice to stand side by side and talk without the worries of somebody becoming suspicious but these moments alone were still what he cherished the most. The times it was just you and him, when there was no façade to maintain in the slightest.
"So do I."

Sucker - Pete x Vance
Sitting on his bed, yearbook resting in his lap, Pete stares at the signatures from the greasers. Summer break had started a few weeks ago, and while some students had gone back home or were on vacation outside of Bullworth, he had been trapped in his dorm. Sure, he went out occasionally to walk around town, see what was new at the cinema or get some fast food, but that was it. Even Jimmy had been too preoccupied to hang out with him, which wasnât too much of a surprise. Sure, he had hoped maybe he could hang out with his best (and pretty much only) friend over the summer before the ginger went home, but when he found the dorm room closed and texts explaining he was working those odd jobs for extra cash, all those expectations had flew right out the window. Pete was used to being alone, sure, but this felt worse. Having finally made a friend and then to just be⊠forgotten.
So here he was, feeling sorry for himself and wondering if he could ease it by taking Vance up on his old offer. Join the greasers at the tenements, hang out and forget â just for a moment â that he was a loser. But the phone number seemed so intimidating, and as Pete grabbed his phone, he found it hard to do anything. To power it on, input his password and create a new text message. What would he say? âHey Vance, Iâm feeling lonely and wanna hang outâ? Did that sound too desperate â too emotionless? Should he ask him how he was doing and hope he would be invited to hang out? He didnât know how Jimmy did it. He had seen his friend start up a conversation out of nowhere. Even whenever he would text Pete, it would sometimes just be a simple âwanna hang out?â message that seemed so nonchalant. Is that what he should send?
His phoneâs ringtone going off scares him, making him jump as he looks down at the caller ID. Itâs a familiar phone number, and itâs only familiar because heâs spent the past hour or so staring at it in his yearbook. With a deep inhale, he accepts the call, holding his phone up to his ear.
âHey, Vance! Whatâs up?â he greets, trying to sound confident as he closes the book, slipping it into his nightstandâs drawer.
âHowâs it hanginâ, big daddy?â What did he call him? Pete sits there, brows knitted together and mouth agape as the name replays over and over in his head. âYou got my number memorized, huh? Now whyâs that?â
âAh, I was just gonna text you, actually,â he confesses, âWhy do you have my number? I donât remember giving it to you.â
âJimmy gave it to me,â He can almost see the greaser shrug, his reply coming like it was the simplest thing in the world. âNow then, what were ya gonna text me?â
âUh I guess â uhâŠâ Heâs stuck now, mind drawing a blank. He can hear Vance on the other side, an interested mhmm coming through loud and clear, curious to hear his reply. âI wanted to know if you wanted to hang out?â
Thereâs silence on the other end for a bit, and now heâs worried that was the wrong thing to say. He shouldâve asked how he was doing instead, cursing himself for blurting out the first thing that came to mind. However, he starts to hear shuffling, and he can faintly make out someone else in the background, but not one he recognizes from the academy.
âIf you donât shut your mouth â not you, Petey â Iâm gonna shut it for you!â Vanceâs booming voice makes him jump, the sound of a door slamming shut at the end of his threat, as if proving a point. With a sigh of relief, he starts again in a calmer tone. âNow, what was that? Hanginâ out? Sure!â
âAh, are you okay?â he asks, âWho was that?â
âOh, ya mean the yellinâ?â he chuckles, the shuffling continuing on the other side of the call. âSorry âbout all that. Sergioâs a bit of a prick sometimes.â
âSergio?â Vance lets out a breath that sounds like a mixture of a scoff and a chuckle.
âOlder bro,â he tells him softly, and that airy, jokey tone has vanished. âLikes to butt into my life a lot. Annoyinâ, but thatâs why I stay away from home so much.â
âOh, I didnât know you were homeâŠâ He shouldâve guessed. Vance wasnât one of the quiet kids at Bullworth. He was probably busy for the summer, either being home or with friends.
âNah, I need a break,â Pete can only guess he hears a window creaking open, and a few seconds later, Vance is letting out a huff. âYou still at school? Iâll come swing by, pick you up. We can do whatever.â
âReally?â He tries to keep his cool and not sound like some desperate dweeb, but with the soft chuckle he gets, he knows he failed.
âReally. âSides, I told ya to hit me up whenever. Thatâs why I gave you my number!â The comment makes him smile and Pete makes sure to let his appreciation be known. With a soft goodbye, he lets himself relax. A smile is plastered on his face and for a moment he wonders why Jimmy had given Vance his number. Whatever the reason, he doesnât dwell on it too long. He knew Vance lived somewhere in New Coventry and he didnât have long to get dressed.
Setting his phone on the nightstand, he hops up from his bed and walks over to his wardrobe. He keeps it casual, knowing Vance wasnât exactly someone who critiqued peopleâs fashion too harshly. The first thing he grabs is the old band shirt Jimmy had left when he spent the night months earlier. Itâs simple enough, a white Billy Talent shirt with a little design, âlike a fire!â right below it. Itâs a little baggy and the material isnât the thickest, but itâs something and truth be told, he had always liked the shirt. Or, just maybe, he liked how cool it had looked on Jimmy and he hoped it would look just as good on him. Throwing on some old jeans and his sneakers, he ruffles his hand through his hair, ridding himself of any lint. He lingers for a moment, staring at himself in the mirror. Maybe he would grow his hair out this year? Something new.
With a shake of the head, he snatches his phone up and shoves it into his pocket, exiting his room and steering clear of Wade dumping one of the nerds into the nearby trashcan. Pushing open the doors, he jogs down the steps and makes his way over the main gate, anticipation coursing through him. A part of him is worried about how todayâs events will transpire. What would they do? Would Vance make fun of him? Would he flake out? He did seem eager to meet up. But was that because he just wanted to get away from his brother?
âAy, Petey!â He looks up, sending Vance a smile as the greaser approaches. Eyeing him up and down, Vance lets out a low whistle, eyebrows raised. âWhatâs your tale, nightingale? Ya look different!â
âOh, I uh â I-I didnât wanna make you wait,â he responds, letting out a nervous chuckle. Vance claps a hand on his shoulder, making him jump.
âLooks good on ya,â he tells him. Heat rushes to Peteâs face. How long had it been since someone had genuinely complimented him?
âT-thanks! You look good too!â It was the first time he had seen the teen like this. His hair had been slicked back, almost hastily, and while he still wore his leather jacket, the rest was different. A white dress shirt that had been unbuttoned, a black top underneath with matching jeans. Even his shoes were changed, old worn out high tops that were left untied.
âWhat? Ya like what ya see?â Vanceâs teasing tone brings Pete out of his daze, the greaser laughing when he starts to stutter.
âI-I just â I mean I-â He takes a moment, breathing in and trying to collect himself as they start to walk. âY-you just look different, too. Never seen you like that.â
âGot dressed quick,â he confesses, and even though his tone turns to a more calmer one, his smile never fades. âWasnât really expectinâ to go out today. Glad you asked, though. Sergio was startinâ his crap.â
âI never heard you talk of him,â That wasnât much of a surprise. Pete had often kept his distance from shop class, intimidated of the clique and their hostile personalities. He wasnât exactly the best at fixing bikes either and didnât have much of a desire for it, which was why he had skipped it when filling out what extracurricular he had wanted. âWhatâs he like?â
Vance hums a bit, lost in thought as they pass over the bridge that led into Old Bullworth Vale. He tells Pete of how Sergio used to go to Bullworth, and how he was the main reason he got into fixing bikes and wanting to eventually move on to cars. They lived in a broken home, their father occasionally bringing home some woman for the night and locking them out. Sergio would often steal the keys to the car before they were pushed out, giving them a warm and somewhat safe place to sit in throughout the night. Vance never knew if his brother slept those nights, but he remembered falling asleep in the passenger seat, the older teen behind the wheel with a scowl on his face and switchblade in hand. They often parked on the street in the richer part of town, but Sergio was paranoid, knowing of the delinquents that roamed around. Apparently they were worse those few years ago from the stories he heard and the cuts and bruises on his brotherâs body when he would come home in the early mornings. Vance even bragged about knowing how to set a broken nose and pop a shoulder back into its socket, much to Peteâs horror.
The stories of Sergio eventually turned into how Vance joined the greasers. Once the leader of the clique, he had filled Vanceâs head with stories of shop class. The stupid antics he and the others would get into, the stories and conspiracy theories Neil would tell them. They all seemed very entertaining and fun, and it was no wonder Vance had wanted to experience it. Sergio had apparently appointed Johnnyâs brother as leader, but had forced him to agree to watch over and take care of Vance when he started his high school life the following year, knowing how hostile the other member was. So before Vance had made friends with Lefty and made a strong connection, Johnnyâs older brother was right by his side, deterring any other greaser that came up with ill intent.
âMaybe youâll join us, too?â Vanceâs suggestion catches Pete off guard, his eyes going wide as he looks at him. Could he ever really pass off as a greaser?
âI-I dunno,â he stammers softly, bringing a hand up to rub the back of his neck. âI-I donât really see myself being⊠one of you guys.â
âI do!â he declares, a bright smile on his face. âCâmon! When school starts up, weâll go talk to Neil!â
âWe?â he repeats. Would Vance really go speak to the man with him to get him enrolled into shop?
ââCourse! Itâll be fun!â he tells him confidently. His head is held high as he wraps an arm around his shoulder, bringing him closer. âYouâll have us to hang out with and protect you. What? You think sometimes I donât wanna goof off in class?â
The greasers had always seemed so serious when it came to their bikes, but he told a different story. How he, Ricky and Peanut would make jokes, harass each other and even start small fights. They had been sent out more times than he could count, and Pete thought what that would be like.
âIâll think about it,â he finally tells him. Throwing his fist in the air, Vance lets out an overjoyed holler. Pete supposed he would be speaking to Neil when August rolled around, and he would be spending more time with the greasers. At least he wouldnât be alone.
Pete doesnât realize theyâve made it all the way to the carnival until the loud music reaches his ears, having been too enticed in Vanceâs interesting (and overly dramatic) stories. Some about the clique and some about his older brother. And as Vance pays for their way in, the greaser turns his attention to him.
âWhat about you?â he asks, curiosity thick in his voice as they find a bench to sit down on.
âW-what about me?â He lets out a nervous chuckle, avoiding the teenâs gaze.
âI told you all about me!â he starts as he raises his voice just a bit, âNow itâs your turn! Whatâs olâ Peteyâs life like?â
âNot as exciting as yours,â he confesses softly. Vance just scoffs, rolling his eyes with a smile on his face.
âYeah, sure,â he dismisses with that snarky tone, âI seem to remember ya bein the one to operate that old hunk of junk in the junkyard way back when.â
âYou mean the magnetized crane?â he clarifies, snicking as Vance rolls his eyes and waves a hand dismissively.
âYeah, whatever,â He turns back to him, grin once again appearing on his face. âNow, again, tell me about yourself!â
âW-well...â There wasnât much to tell, but Pete decided to share anyway. His story wasnât as exciting or scary, but Vance seemed to take interest. He scoffed when Pete said his parents lived decently close to the school, but he lived in the dorm room anyway because his parents wanted âsome peace and quietâ. No wonder he was so awkward. Vance would bet anything that his parents were to blame for the younger teenâs poor social skills. Not to mention his father was a librarian, and he wouldnât be surprised if the man kept a quiet tone around the house too.
When asked about any siblings, Pete could only shake his head. His parents were dismissive of his existence, often leaving him to his own devices, only coming around once in a while to check on him. His main entertainment was watching TV or playing video games, occasionally even drawing. His parents would buy him little sketchbooks, seemingly pleased that he had found something quiet to do without them having to hear noises coming from the television set. He did admit that he had a hamster at one point, an orange and white long-haired rodent that was his best friend for a few years before it passed from old age. It was sad that he didnât even seem to have friends growing up, his parents not wanting him to go out in fear he would get hurt or taken. Maybe that was the only nice thing Vance had heard about the couple, but Pete had been right. His stories werenât as exciting. Apparently his first year at the academy had been the most thrilling time of his life, and Jimmy had been his first and only friend. Vance couldnât imagine having a life so⊠sad.
âHowâs âbout we keep makinâ this depressinâ life of yours fun?â Vance suggests, a glint flashing across his eyes as he grabs the younger teenâs hand, pulling him up from the bench. Pete falters and stutters out a flurry of questions, almost tripping over his feet as he tries to keep up with the teenâs fast pace. Vance is just a bundle of laughter, promising him a night he wouldnât forget.
They start at the back of the park first, walking through the freak show and marveling at the people behind the glass.  Alfred, the skeleton man, had been the first freak to greet them, eyeing Pete as he took a drag from his cigarette. Seeing his bones poke out through his skin had sent shivers down his spine, and his voice held something Pete couldnât quite place. As they made their way further in, they could hear Paris talking, making some remark about the show she was watching. Sitting on her couch with legs spread, she sent them an acknowledging smile as she picked up a few chips, throwing them into her mouth as she scratched at her beard. Of course, Vance had a couple remarks about her, but Pete had tried to drown him out as he led him throughout the rest of the freak show.
The others had all been interesting, and Pete had wondered how life could be so weird. Siamese twins, a mermaid that Vance wasnât too sure was real. However, the one who stuck out the most to Pete was Drew, the crazy painted man. His screaming and incoherent rambling had already made the teen nervous, but when the man threw himself against the bars of his enclosure, he had jumped back with a shriek, scared the bars wouldnât hold him. Vance had grabbed his arm, steadying him as he tried to calm his nerves.
âHeâs just actinâ,â he tells him as he shoots an agitated glance at Drew, âGuyâs just some wacko. Probably doinâ this for the easy money.â
Pete just nodded his head as he followed him, but the screaming had stuck with him, and he was sure it would for the rest of his life. And though he didnât want to admit it, he was more than overjoyed to have walked out of the freak show, letting out a breath he didnât even realize he had been holding in. Maybe it was the dark lighting or how cramped everything felt, but Pete didnât like it, only noticing once they were outside just how close he had been walking to Vance.
âHow about we try out those rides âfore it gets any darker?â Itâs only now that Pete realizes the sun is starting to set. With a smile, he gives him a nod and follows him over to the Big Squid. The line moved quick through the queue, and before they knew it, they were being seated in one of the carts. The monotone voice of Freeley comes through over the speakers, the request that everyone keeps hands and feet inside and not try to stand up during the ride. And when it starts, picking up speed and throwing them around, Pete canât keep the smile off of his face, occasionally glancing over to Vance, seeing him laughing as well. It felt nice for Pete, to feel like he finally belonged somewhere or meant something to someone.
By the time they get off, both are a bit dizzy. Pete raises his hand to rest it on Vanceâs shoulder in order to stabilize himself, but when he finally registers the cool leather beneath his palm, he pulls away, worried about what response he would receive from the greaser. However, Vance just gives him a joyful smile as he leads him over to the roller coaster. Theyâre not seated in the front, Pete being too nervous, so both opt for the cart in the middle.
âLemme slide by ya there,â Vanceâs voice is soft as he moves over Pete, whoâs sitting in the seat closest to the steps they had just walked up. They pull the bar down securely, Pete giving a few extra tugs to ensure it wouldnât be going anywhere. Of course this doesnât go unnoticed, and the greaser snickers softly at the younger teenâs actions. Once more, they hear the monotone announcement before the ride starts, launching them towards the opening of the canyon before pulling them up. Everyone else on the ride has their arms raised, but Peteâs holding onto the metal bar for dear life. And as they approach the top of the hill, he screws his eyes shut, body tensing as he prepares for the worse.
A scream is pulled from him as the coaster falls down the hill, and Vance reaches over to pry his left hand from the handle bar, raising it into the air with his, yelling at him to just let loose and have fun. Although his body is trembling a bit from the fall, he takes the advice and finally opens his eyes, loosening the grip he had on his other hand and letting it raise into the air as well. Vance is still holding his hand, palms pressed together as Pete grips him with almost the same intensity as he was the bar. However, despite the biting wind in his face and the sharp turns that throw him into the teen, Pete canât keep the large smile off of his face. Vance is right, this is a lot more fun. And as the coaster returns its original spot, the two are still laughing. The bar rises and Pete stands up, stepping out, still holding Vanceâs hand to keep him steady and make sure he doesnât trip as the greaser asks him how his hair looks. Thereâs one more ride and as they walk over, Pete has to stop the teen before he pays yet again for their fun.
âYouâve paid for everything!â he tells him with a laugh, digging out a dollar from his pocket and giving it to the operator. âItâs time I paid for something.â
âWell, ainât you just the sweetest,â Vance smiles at him as he leads him over to the rickety seat. He scoots over to the end, allowing Pete to climb in after him, both pulling down the bar that creaked loudly. The ride starts, jerking them forward a bit as they follow the curve up. The sunâs set by now, and the carnival lights illuminate below them as theyâre taken higher and higher up. Pete shivers as the soft breeze picks up, but he tries to concentrate on the view around them. He can see the beach in the distance, the lighthouseâs light rotating around. Their cart stops at the very top, rocking slightly and Pete looks below. Theyâre so high off the ground, itâs intimidating. Another shiver runs through him, this one out of fear.
âYou cold?â Vance questions, cocking his head as he looks at him. Pete lets out a soft hum, eyebrows raised as he turns his gaze to meet his. Vance just gives him a cheeky smile as he brings his hands up, gripping his jacket and removing it from him. It was the first time Pete had seen a greaser without their iconic coat on, and he was honestly surprised to see that he actually had some muscle to him.
âU-uh⊠whatâre you doing?â Peteâs confused when Vance drapes the jacket over his shoulders, but the warmth he feels is more than welcoming.
âYouâre cold, ainât ya?â he asks with a small chuckle, âIâm fixinâ it!â
âY-you donât h-have to,â he stammers softly, but Vance doesnât seem to be taking no for an answer. He just sits there, a smile on his face as he tilts his head up, looking at the stars.
âGlad ya asked me out, ya know?â he starts, catching Pete off guard. He was glad? âGets kinda⊠crazy at home sometimes, and everyone else was off doinâ their own thing. Managed to find Jimmy and get your number, just to chat but⊠well, you had a better idea.â
âYeah, I hear ya,â he agrees, going to hold the jacket close as he matches Vanceâs smile. âI donât really got anyone except Jimmy, and heâs been busy. I'm too cool to be a dork, and too dorky to be anything else, so Iâm always just⊠alone.â
âNo youâre not,â The confident tone makes Pete knit his eyebrows together. âYa got me now! And soon, youâll have the greasers! Peanutâs gonna be the leader, and I just know heâd be happy to have ya!â
âMaybe cause Iâm Jimmyâs friend,â he scoffs softly, looking to the ground as the ride resumes, slowly bringing them down. âI just⊠I wanna feel like I exist without him, you know?â
âYou do,â Vance wraps an arm around his shoulders, bringing him closer to him. âYou and me? Weâre existinâ, right now, without Jimmy. And youâll be existing, without Jimmy, when you join us.â
âYeah, sure. Weâll see,â Maybe it was the low self-esteem Pete always had throughout his life. How dull and mediocre it was, and how the most exciting thing to ever happen to him was falling in with the only two psychopaths in all of Bullworth. âJust feels like I only had a meaning when Gary and Jimmy showed up in my life.â
âAnd youâd be wrong,â As they get to the bottom and the railing lifts, the two make their way out of the old cart, thanking the man and being on their way. When they walk to the gates, Vanceâs arm finds its way back across Peteâs shoulder and they fall into step towards the exit. âTonightâs been amazing, and itâs because you asked me to come hang. Not Jimmy, and sure as hell not Gary. Donât see any of those two makinâ you do this.â
âYouâre right,â he chuckles. They walk back through the tunnel, Vance still giving him a pep talk he probably needed years ago. Heâs still holding onto the jacket, his face tinted red and a smile pulling at his lips. Itâs not long before they get into a more friendly conversation, making jokes and thoughts about what the next school year would hold. Vance kept referring to him as the newest greaser, and at this point, Pete wasnât even denying him or the idea. He loved the thought in fact. To be part of a clique and feel like he belonged? Have something relatively close to a family that would care for him and make him feel like he mattered? It was almost like a dream come true.
They walk all the way back to school, sneaking past the prefects that were out prowling, looking for any students breaking curfew. It was a lot warmer inside the dorms when they entered, the doors shutting loudly behind them as they walked down the hall and towards Peteâs room. However, that was as far as Vance went. Standing outside of his room, heâs practically beaming at the younger teen.
âI had fun,â he tells him, and Pete can only nod in agreement. They stood closely together, and the faint smell of Vanceâs cologne mixed with the cigarettes he smoked almost religiously had radiated off of him. It was nice, calming in a way.
âI uh â Iâm uh⊠I-Iâm really glad you called,â Pete laughs, turning his gaze to the floor. âNot sure I wouldâve been able to text you.â
âMe too,â Curling his index finger under Peteâs chin, Vance raises his face so heâs looking at him again. Softly brushing his thumb across his bottom lip, he leans in to press a kiss to his mouth. Eyes going wide, Pete stares at him in disbelief when he pulls away, hearing a chuckle. âYou have a good night, Petey. Maybe we can hang out again tomorrow.â
He opens his mouth to say something â anything, but nothing comes out. So instead, his just nods, his face on fire as the greaser chuckles once again. He takes a step back, gives him one last smile and finally moves to leave the dorm. Peteâs knees feel weak, his heart racing, thudding so loud against his chest that it reverberates in his ears. He turns to go inside of his room, but a gasp escapes his lips. He rushes after Vance, flinging the heavy door to the dorm rooms open.
âY-your jacket!â he calls after the teen. Turning back with an innocently confused face, he looks Pete up and down. The leather jacket is still hanging from his shoulders. It was cute that he didnât put his arms through the sleeves.
âYou keep it,â he tells him, a smug grin forming. âEvery greaser needs a leather jacket! Consider it a gift!â
âO-oh, o-okayâŠâ He smiles, shrinking in on himself just a bit. âThank you! Iâll take good care of it!â
Vance just nods, turning his heels and continuing his way out of school grounds and towards home. Pete watches him until he makes a right, disappearing behind the walls. With a soft sigh, he closes the door and returns to his room. He gently takes the jacket off, hanging it on the coat hanger by the door. His heart fluttered as he admired it, and he couldnât wipe the smile off of his face. He owed Jimmy his gratitude, and come the beginning of the school year, he was going to make his way down to shop class and speak with Neil about joining.

Buddy Rich â Swinginâ New Big Band (Full Album)
Swinginâ New Big Band is a 1966 live album by Buddy Rich and his big band.
â1966 was a most illogical time for anyone to try forming a new big band but Buddy Rich beat the odds. This CD reissues the first album by the Buddy Rich Orchestra, augmenting the original Lp program with nine previously unissued performances from the same sessions. The arrangements (eight by Oliver Nelson along with charts by Bill Holman, Phil Wilson, Jay Corre, Don Rader and others) swing, put the emphasis on the ensembles and primarily feature Correâs tenor although trumpeter Bobby Shew, altoist Pete Yellin, pianist John Bunch and guitarist Barry Zweig are also heard from. Most of the songs did not stay in the drummerâs repertoire long (other than Bill Reddieâs adaptation of âWest Side Storyâ and âSister Sadieâ) and in fact only three members of the 17-piece orchestra would still be working for Rich a year later. An enjoyable and somewhat historic set.â â Scott Yanow/AllMusic.

hows the air out here
The lingering smell of sawdust and wet wood had nothing on the mildew and blood, anâ though it was an overall disgusting smell, it was what Home smelled like now. In the times he felt himself losinâ it, Nick would try to focus on the more pointless things. Like that goddamn smell.  Troy and him could never find any common ground together, which made workinâ with him a right near cock fight most days. He never wanted to get on Billâs bad side, and with his mom and uncle Pete watchinâ him so closely some days, he really had to start steppinâ back. Even when Troy yelled after him, he had to steady himself and keep goinâ with a quick âWhatever.â
Donât wanna get on Billâs bad side--but...damn. Who else am I sâpposed to talk to who isnât going to bite my fucking head off!? Shaking his head and keeping his eyes forward, he briskly made his way to the roof of the hardware store. Luke was workinâ in the greenhouse, last he heard. And he hoped he knew he wouldnât bother him for no good reason, but he was also banking on beinâ mad as a good reason.
Anâ knowinâ someone for as long as these two had, he was sure Luke was used to the varying lengths that his internal fuse would-or wouldnât-ignite. Still, he never could quite pin the other down as easily. Nick tried to be transparent with Luke, unless it involved those thoughts and memories more suited to be kept to himself. Still, he had wanted to establish, especially after the world went to shit, that family was the most important thing above all else. And he wanted to be part of that family, with Luke. He supposed it all mattered more on who you considered your family, though. That whole, blood beinâ thicker than water bullshit was all but buried in the ground at this point. Rules nâ stuff were all rewritten.Â
By the time he had gotten to the rickety door to their greenhouse, he had to stop. Take a breath, because he knew if he just busted on in there heâd probably be yellinâ. A couple gentle knocks; opening the door with his free hand, he propped his rifle up against the wall next to the door. âLuke?âÂ
