Our tale begins with a princess, a dragon, a prince, and a bard. Their paths may cross, but each has a different story to hear. Who’s tale shall we hear first?

Kagami prided herself on being rational. From a young age, she learned how to keep her temper in check, her emotions at bay. Constantly she was praised and told how great of a queen she would make. That was all that mattered. Being a good queen.

And yet, whenever she was with Marinette, that didn’t matter.

She met Marinette very young, under instructions from her mother to befriend the girl to better relationships between the kingdoms. So Kagami resigned herself to be polite, if it meant she would help her kingdom. 

But when she met the young princess, she genuinely wanted to be her friend. Marinette was loud, happy, and everything Kagami wasn’t. And Marinette smiled at Kagami, and told her that she knew where the chefs kept the cookies. The two ran off and cemented their friendship over a feast of stolen sweets.

As the duo matured, Kagami kept seeing more and more in Marinette. How her eyes twinkle in the sun, how her laugh sounded like bells, how soft her skin was. And by 20, more and more, Kagami waits for Marinette’s visits like a heartsick puppy.

One sunshine heavy morning, Marinette’s carriage arrives at Kagami’s palace. Kagami, not even attempting to mask her excitement, rushes down to greet her at the gates. Marinette practically leaps out of the carriage into Kagami’s arms. Kagami gladly accepts the hug, squeezing Marinette as close as she can, but immediately notices something is wrong. She gently tilts Marinette’s chin up to look at her face, and immediately notices Marinette’s puffy eyes.

“Say no more,” Kagami instructs, swiftly pulling Marinette into a bridal carry and sweeping her off to her room. She gently settles Marinette on her four poster bed, and pulls the canopy shut to give them privacy. “Marinette, what’s wrong?”

Marinette bursts into fat ugly sobs, her body rocking, as she wails. “Kagami, I, I….”

Kagami does her best to comfort Marinette, wiping the tears as they fall off of Marinette’s face. “You can tell me what’s wrong.”

“My, my, my parents, they…” Marinette blubbers, unable to speak.

“Shh, shh, you can tell me,” Kagami reassures Marinette.

“I’m in an arranged marriage!” Marinette finally gets out.

Kagami freezes.  

“My parents, s-sai, they said that, that I had wa-waited too long, and they said, they were, they were sorry, but that, but that, I needed to be married…..” 

Kagami does not like to get mad. But now, she can only see red. “To who,” she hisses.

“Some, some boy named Adrien, from, from the Agreste kingdom. I’ve never ever met, met, met him! ‘Gami, what am I going to do?”

Kagami doesn’t answer. The only thing she can think of is how her blood is boiling. Marinette engaged to some man she has never met? Even though Kagami knows the boy, Marinette forced to spend the rest of her life with a stranger? Her Marinette?

Kagami feels sick to her stomach. She actually feels sick to her stomach. She clutches her stomach, and softly groans in pain. Marinette, amongst her tears, notices Kagami doubling over. 

“Ka-kagami?” She whispers.

Kagami can only groan, her anger and pain stealing her words.

Marinette is suffering. Marinette is sobbing. All of Marinette’s hopes and dreams shattered.

Kagami will not let it happen.

And with a great roar, Kagami has changed.  Kagami takes no time in noticing her form, she doesn't care. All that matters is Marinette. Kagami gently scoops up Marinette in her claws, making sure that she is comfortable and won’t fall out. She has to protect Marinette. After securing an awestruck Marinette, she breaks through the stone tower like sand, shielding Marinette from the debris. But where can I go where she’ll be safe? 

It doesn’t matter. Kagami will figure it out. Her thoughts are interrupted by the shrieks of the people below them. Between cries of “Dragon”, “The princess Marinette” and “Where is Kagami”, she cannot focus. The pests are making her even more furious. She knows what she is doing. So she flees, with a big flap of her wings, the scenery fading behind her. She just needs to leave. Her blood is pounding through her head, all rational thought gone. All is left is fury, and a need to protect.

After what seems like hours, Kagami spots a small tower, and while overgrown with vines and flowers, looks structurally sound. She gently lands on it, testing her weight. After determining it safe, she opens her claws, letting Marinette climb out.

She’s safe. Kagami rumbles, pleased at herself. Safe Marinette, safe is good.

She looks at Marinette, who has stopped crying. “Kagami?” Marinette asks, her voice quivering.

And it all shatters.

Kagami is quickly back to human form, kneeling on the tower ground in front of Marinette. “What have I done?” Kagami whispers, her eyes wide, a hand pressed to her mouth. 

Marinette drops to the ground, her hands planted on Kagami’s shoulders. “Kagami, breather,” she instructs. “It’s going to be okay. See, I’m fine.”

Kagami can only sniffle, willing herself to not to cry, not in front of Marinette. “O-okay.”

“Good, you’re doing great.” Marinette reassures. “Now, ‘Gami, you have to tell me what happened.”

Kagami sighs, and sits down all the way. “You might want to sit down too, this is.. A long story.”

Marinette settles herself across from Kagami, and gently takes her hands in her own, giving a reassuring squeeze.

With an inhale, Kagami begins.

“Many, many years ago, when my mother was a little younger than us, she was traveling abroad with her parents. They stayed in a small village during the journey, barely a blip on the kingdom’s map. And my mother, she had never stayed in ‘common’ places before, so she was...less than kind. She mocked the village, the people, every little thing. And, come suppertime, an older woman came to bring the food. My mother upon seeing the woman began to insult her on her hair, her height, her teeth. My grandparents admonished my mother, but to no avail. The old woman, shocked by her manner, tripped and spilt the food all over my mother. My mother, who had a wicked temper, released her entire wrath on the poor woman. And she, she..” Kagami falters, unsure how to continue the tale.

“You can do it, ‘Gami,” Marinette encourages.

Kagami sadly smiles at Marinette. “The elderly woman revealed herself to be a powerful enchantress. My mother, upon seeing her true form, threw herself at the enchantress's feet, begging forgiveness. The enchantress, knowing that my mother only apologised because of her power, only softened her curse.”

Marinette’s eyes widen slightly, beginning to understand.

“The enchantress told my mother that every child she had, if they got angry, would turn into a hideous beast. And in a flash of light, she disappeared. My grandparents tried everything to remove the curse, but no one could undo what had been done. So my mother resigned herself to produce an heir, and nothing more. My entire life, I have been calm, and instructed on how to control myself, lest I turn into… It happened far too many times when I was very little, and I quickly learned that turning was bad. But.. seeing you so sad, and the injustice of an arranged marriage…. I snapped.”

“For what it’s worth,” Marinette murmurs, “You weren’t hideous.”

Kagami looks at Marinette in surprise, her cheeks slightly flushing. “Oh. Thank you.”

Marinette smiles, and stands up. “Alright, so we have a few options,” she says. “We can return to the castle, and say that both of us were kidnapped by the dragon, but we made a daring escape. We could stay in the tower until a prince rescues us to give us more time away from...everything. Or..”

“Or what?”

“We build a new life here.”

“What?”

“Hear me out! I don’t want to be in an arranged marriage, and we both know you feel stifled in the life of a princess. We could set up base in this tower, figure out a way to grow food, sustain ourselves, we could live new lives! I would.. I would give up the life of a royal to be with you, ‘Gami.”

Kagami can only stare at Marinette, her face rapidly heating up. 

Marinette quickly realises what she said, and covers her face too late to hide her blush. “Ahhh, kill me now. ‘Gami, oh my goodness, ‘Gami…” She shakily pulls her hands away from her face. “You know what? Screw it. ‘Gami, let’s start a new life. We’ll obviously have to get new identities, and money, and everything, but I think we can do it.” She reaches out to Kagami. “What do you say?”

Kagami stares at her, awestruck, and takes the hand.

“Let’s do this.”

-Y/N's P.O.V; the darkness still in control- 

I stared at the place where they once stood, staggering back as I tried to wrap my head around what just happened. I had them, I finally had them but he had to interfere like he always did. That damn phoenix. I let out a cry of rage, my blood boiling so hot I thought the skin on my arms would begin to melt at any second now. I stared down at my hands, all three powers activating but seeing them just made me angrier. I screamed again, my throat already beginning to go hoarse with all the strain I was putting it through. Even with all this power, even when I used all three of them, they were no match against that phoenix. What infuriated me the most was that he only used his phoenix, his fire was all he needed. I was rendered powerless with only one third of his strength.

"Sehun! Minseok!" I yelled out, my chest rising and falling quickly with how heavily I was breathing.

Not even five seconds after I called out to them they came. They came in with questions already falling from their lips but they closed their mouths as soon as they realized who exactly they were talking to. My hand twitched at the way their eyes glowed.

"We don't take orders from you." Sehun hissed, Minseok standing by his side quietly but he stood just as defiantly.

I grit my teeth, tilting my head to the side until I heard my neck crack, “Today isn’t the day to defy me you little pest.”

“Yesterday, today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow I don’t care what day it is. We don’t take orders from you, never have and never will.” Minseok spoke lowly, his sapphire colored eyes shining brightly.

I all but growled in frustration, closing my eyes quickly before opening them, my pupils glowing the same brilliant sapphire color as his, the black around them making them stand out more. He stumbled back at the sight, his eyes widened in shock. I tore my gaze away from him and looked over at Sehun, my eyes shining silver now.

“I was the one that gave you your powers you little ingrates.” 

“N-No...Y/N...she--she gave them to us...you have nothing to do with it…” Sehun began, stuttering until he finally trailed off, unable to continue.

“And just who do you think gave her her powers, hmm? I created all of you, all of you, down to the last child in this damn empire. I am what awaits you when you die and I am there when you take your first breath. I am as close to a god as one can get  and my words are absolute,” I said, taking a step towards them with each word until I was standing directly in front of them, “Now...obey me.”

They both looked at me with wide eyes, the fear radiating off them in waves, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy this. I smirked at seeing them gulp, practically feeding off the fear they held in their eyes. Just as I opened my mouth to instill even more fear into them I felt a sudden pain in my head. I tried ignoring it for the first few seconds but it quickly became too much for me to bear.

-Minseok’s P.O.V-

We watched as she doubled over, grabbing her head with both hands, whimpers leaving her mouth before she let out a guttural groan. Sehun took a step forward, intending to help but I put my arm out in front of him, stopping him. My eyes stayed on her the whole time as I watched with wide eyes as she changed right in front of us. Half of her hair turned white once more, her right eye going white as well. Sehun took another step forward but I refused to let him get close to her. I grabbed onto his arm tightly, keeping him at my side as we watched Y/N stumble over her own feet, her hands still grabbing onto her head, continuous groans leaving her lips. Just when I thought she was going to pass out from the pain she looked up, tears flowing out of her eyes but they weren’t normal tears...no...she was crying tears of blood.

“Get...out.” She groaned out with much effort, her face contorted in pain.

We watched in stunned silence as the black tried to swallow up her white eye once again but she managed to keep it at bay.

“Get...out…get out!” She cried out, the pain and agony in her voice killing both of us but it seemed like there was nothing we could do to help her.

“Y/N...tell us. What--what can we do to ease your pain? Please...we can help.” Sehun called out to her, the desperation clear in his voice as he tried getting closer but I held on to him.

I knew how much this was hurting him, the pain in my chest just as evident. She was a dear friend to the both of us...hell we even considered her family so to see her like this...hurt...it hurt like hell. 

“Where-” I started but cut myself off, swallowing the lump in my throat, “Where do you want us to go?”

“Go...to him. The Phoenix…” She managed to get out after struggling for a moment, “Soo...Jun...they’re both...with...the Phoenix. Go to them...go...go now! That’s an order!”

I set my jaw, feeling a single tear escape as it cascaded down my face. I nodded, giving her a deep bow for a moment before creating a thick wall of ice in between us and her. 

“What the hell are you doing? We can’t just leave her when-”

“Open your fucking eyes, Oh Sehun! She’s not in control anymore! That thing has taken over completely...it took all her strength to come out right now. And--and I don’t think she’ll be able to come out ever again…” I trailed off, my voice thick with emotion, another tear falling from my eyes, “We are leaving, now. I don’t know about you but I intend to follow through with these orders...they may as well be the last orders she ever gives us.”

Sehun’s face fell at my words and just when I thought he was going to refuse and put up a fight he nodded, clenching both his hands into fists at his side. I returned his nod, turning on my heel to leave but I stopped in my tracks at what I heard. On the other side of the wall of ice we heard a blood curdling scream, the crippling agony in that scream made me want to turn back around and force that darkness out of her. I would do anything to trade places with her. I would give my life to take away her pain, even if I’d only succeed in taking a small fraction of her pain away I would gladly give my life but I knew, and fuck did it hurt, I knew there was absolutely nothing any one could do. 

I closed my eyes for a moment, inhaling shakily before exhaling. Not wanting Sehun to get any ideas I grabbed onto his arm and dragged him along.

-Chanyeol’s P.O.V-

Jongin and Junmyeon stood off to the side quietly as Kyungsoo and I spoke things over. It felt a little strange conversing with him like this but it also felt natural at the same time. The memories that I had unlocked showed me that I had treated Kyungsoo as if he was my own brother back when we were children. I smiled at the thought, getting distracted by the memory but I was quickly brought out of my thoughts.

“Chan! There are two men and a woman standing in front of the gates. Judging from their clothes their from Hannan. I recognize the men but the woman is a complete mystery.” Baekhyun explain as he walked up to us, Jongdae following closely behind.

“Its Kim Minseok and Oh Sehun...the woman...we don’t know.” Jongdae added, looking to Kyungsoo for clarification as if he should know who she is.

But Kyungsoo was too stunned to speak...it looked like he was too stunned to even think. I was also in a state of confusion, what are they doing here? With this thought in mind I looked over to Jongin, signalling for him to go get them. He nodded in return, vanishing before our very eyes before returning before we could blink again. It was as Jongdae and Baekhyun had said, Minseok and Sehun were part of the trio but the woman  was a complete mystery...at least to us. Junmyeon and Kyungsoo recognized her immediately. Kyungsoo even went so far as to quickly walk over to her before pulling her into his embrace. I watched silently as he pulled away from her, cupping the sides of her face with his hands gently, speaking to her quietly.

“Minseok...Sehun...what--what are you two doing here?” Junmyeon asked voicing the question that had been floating around in my head since hearing of them being here.

Sehun kept quiet, staring at the floor in a daze while Minseok set his jaw, clenching his hands into fists at his sides.

“If you’re here then who’s protecting her? Who is by her side if-”

“She’s not herself anymore...you should know by now.” Minseok cut him off, the tone of his voice sending a chill down my spine.

Junmyeon staggered back, realizing what Minseok meant but he still had to ask, “Was--was she not able to take back control?”

Minseok looked away, this subject seemingly too hard to even talk about but Junmyeon wouldn’t take silence for an answer.

“Minseok...answer me.”

He swallowed harshly, looking down at the floor underneath his feet. He took a moment to answer but when he did his voice was full of emotion, “That thing...it’s fully consumed her. It took all her strength to come out for a few minutes to tell us to come here. We wanted to stay, we wanted to help her but...there’s nothing we can do. She used the last of her strength to hold it off while we escaped,” he paused for a second before adding in a small voice, “It took everything in me to hold Sehun back but the moment I saw her tears...I would’ve tried something to get that thing out of her myself if not for the look she had in her eyes. Jun...she was in agony, it hurt seeing her like that. But worst of all...she was absolutely terrified...she was scared of being consumed...of being erased completely…”

Hearing his words had my heart plummet to the pit of my stomach, a lump forming in my throat. What I would do to take the pain away, to make that monster disappear. I didn’t even know I had taken a few steps towards the entrance until I felt a hand on my chest and one on each of my arms. I looked around me to see Baekhyun and Jongdae had a hold of my arms while Jongin had placed his hand on my chest.

“Chan...I can’t let you go to her.”

“And why the hell not?” I all but growled out, surprising those around me at the intensity of my voice.

“She’ll kill you...I can’t have you die on me.” Jongin mumbled out.

“Oh so it’s okay for you to change my future but I can’t-”

“You’re not the one that’s supposed to die!” He shouted, cutting me off as he lost his composure.

I looked at him wide eyed, stunned by his sudden outburst but then his words processed in my mind. If I’m not the one that’s meant to die then does that mean-

“You’re...telling me my sister--she’s the one that’s supposed to die here?” Kyungsoo asked, his voice trembling as he made his way over to Jongin. 

Jongin closed his eyes, letting out a sigh. And that was all the answer I needed, my legs going weak as I fell to my knees.

“Jongin answer me.” Kyungsoo demanded, wanting to hear the answer with his own ears.

“Yes...I’ve gone through every scenario myself, trying to see if there’s a possibility of her coming out of this alive and every one of them, every single one, she’d end up dead. I’m sorry Kyungsoo...but even if I somehow let you all meddle with time it’d be all for naught. This thing, this darkness was always meant to consume her. It’s the fate of all those that had the misfortune of having this thing share their body. Like those before her...she will cease to exist at the age of twenty five."

-Y/N’s P.O.V- 

I brought my knees up to my chest, my hands trembling with every move I made. It was so dark in here...I don’t remember ever feeling fear like this before in my life. This darkness was never ending...and that’s what terrified me the most. I want to get out...I want to leave this place but I don’t know how. Kyungsoo...Junmyeon….Chanyeol...anyone help me. I’m so desperately I’d beg for even Chanyeol to come save me.

How dare you call out to that phoenix?

I jumped at the sound of its voice. It sounded more menacing than I had ever heard it before. I cowered in fear, covering my head with my hands as my entire body trembled.

Pathetic. I would’ve thought you’d put up more of a fight than my previous vessels but you’re nothing compared to them. And you’re begging for that beast to come and save you? Try saving yourself for once, maybe I’d be merciful if you weren’t so pitiful.

I said nothing, keeping my head down as it let out a loud laugh. I flinched back at the sound. The ship hummed around him in the darkness. Something, somewhere, was beeping near the meat puppet hung in the rigging that limited his abilities with a biological bottle neck. His head was so fuzzy. Which is what they wanted. He was too smart, they knew what kind of damage he could do if he werent forcefully throttled. 

He worked slowly. The plan had come to him in an instant, as he'd gotten encouragement from the helm chat. He could do something. He could affect his situation. He was not fucking helpless, he refused to be.

First he carefully hacked into the mediboard that controlled his blood chemistry. He fiddled around with it so its output would remain steady, but it would cease giving him the brain fogging drugs.

That took a while to make it out of his system, every moment of it afraid someone would draw a random blood draw to double check the mediboard, though that was passingly rare. They trusted their equipment.

As his head cleared his body began to hurt, he had a sudden more complete awareness of the agony of the living wires burrowed under his skin, and the way his shoulders were wreched and taking all his weight.

He had to adjust the output again to smooth out his heart beat so they wouldn't be alerted.

Pain was fine. He could deal with pain, he could think and that was what mattered right now in this moment. Blessed clear thoughts. Every moment he delayed was a moment his gamble might be discovered so he worked quickly, spoofing his address from outside the ship while he expanded his own permissions. HE could open and close doors, he could even open and close airlocks, but he wasn't trusted with them.

He wormed his way into the controls, granting himself admin powers at the root level.

Then he just had to wait.

This was the part he had the least control over. Her movements.

Now that he'd given himself root acess and no longer needed the clarity to hack the ships permissions he left the door he'd created open, and went back in to fix his medications and outputs back the way they had been, by the time he had his opertunity he would be fully drugged again, they wouldn't be able to tell it was him. ------------------ Being the Empress had its perks. No waiting in lines, getting to take par in destruction and culling without consequences, running fleets of ships, not having to tolerate any mischief, being feared and respected by everyone at default. But most importantly? Not having to do shit unless you want to. This is one thing Meenah took advantage of as much as possible. If she didn’t have to get up and go somewhere to get something done, why would she?

In her younger years, the idea of taking the throne had caused her nothing but annoyance and disgust. Being taken care of like a wriggler, being responsible for a planet full of easily influenced and hasty trolls. Taking care of her lusus indefinitely, and having to personally feed her each night. Making a quick and not very discreet exit from her original planet had been a great decision. She’s stood by it since it happened, all those sweeps ago in an universe that never quite fit to her tastes. Being born there had felt like a cruel joke once she knew what she had missed out on.

So when she had spawned here some number of sweeps ago, she had been horrified. Devastated. They won and she, as always, got absolutely shafted by the universe. That is... until she took a good look around and evaluated her situation. Beforus had been a little pond, full of toothless guppies. And she had been a shark, unable to even turn around in the limited space. But Alternia? Alternia was a vast sea, with plenty of prey to sink her teeth into and depths to claim as her own. It was as if this gift universe was molded for her, a refined combination of two planets and the two lives she had lived through. The best part was that she had gotten to float over the hard parts, the initial rise to power and the conquering and culling of her personified roadblocks. The endless cycle of teaching her throneworld to submit.

There’s no shame in admitting she’s fully enjoyed the spoils of her new life, entirely content with trading a few sweeps for her position. Hell, she was a tyrian. There were plenty of sweeps to spare, she would do it again.

Which led to this, a three night streak of kicking up her feet in her own block on the flagship. The Battleship Condescention.

Okay, fine, maybe she should have been doing something more important than catching up on dramatic cinema when there was a rebellion to stomp out with her boot. But things were fine. They were starting to close in on the short, mouthy, ship thief. Her biggest potential problem was nice and cozy some number of floors below her, tucked into his ports and wires like a wriggler to coon. And no one else was stepping up to oppose her. Even the most powerful and feared leaders of societies had to take a break, let the tide ease them out.

Of course, all good things come to an end. This time, it’s the portable communications device implanted into her tiaratop. Already missing her makeshift getaway, she flicked a claw against the gold and her features were illuminated by the live footage of one of her on hand advisors. She scowled at him, lip jutted out and pierced brows raised to put emphasis on her annoyance. “We got a, y’know, a problem.” He grunted, the last word coming out like pr-ah-bl-im. “Sum’thin’ funny, ‘kay. Minor. We’re handling it, swear it ma’am. Got someone on the f’rewalls, set that right. But...”

When the purple hued troll went on to explain, she was furious. Someone had managed to nudge at their security systems and give them a test and it took them a few nights to tell her? Her pan whirled to the worst and most paranoid conclusion. Someone from their session, probably that infuriating time wench or the pirate enthusiast, maybe a turnaround from her own Makara if he’d been fully awakened in their new planet.

She stormed about to get ready, pan immediately set to force her commandeered pissblood battery to help her track down and eliminate the source. If her goons couldn’t get the job done, he was going to do it for them.

“Soon as I grill this guppy, you’re gettin’ sautéed. Fried.” Meenah, better known as the Condesce, set her focus entirely on a stomping beeline for the exit and her threatening tangent. “Pike it or not, best get ya’ affairs in order. Boat t’ sea what the pointy end a’ my golden prod ‘eels like embedded in ya’ b’ass. No shrimp-athy for the in-conch-petent, set a bet’a example for the school.”

The door to her block opened with quiet ‘swish!’ as she took her first step out. And then another. Somewhere, a number of clicks below stationed near the central engines, a troll was probably filled with justifiable anger and excitement. With the Empress there was nothing but the light, sharp sound of her heeled boots in the metal corridor paired with the rough undertone to her flurry of words. The advisor on the other end of her video chat cowered, sputtering excuses as she glared down her defined cartilage nub at him. “And if you e’fin conch-sea-der tryin’ to catch a wave trout’a here, I ain’t mako-in it snappy.” She continued her tirade, satisfied by the way the other troll’s eyes went wide and his jaw slid open. “Yeah, that’s moray p’ike it. Best get ya-shelf practicin’ on a look a’ ray-morse.”

“Actually,” he started, gaze averted to the light over the airlock behind her. It blinked red once, yellow twice, and began to shift to green. “I think -“

“Clam it, small fry!” She stopped her determined march to point a claw at him, as if he were really a few feet ahead of her. “Can’t bay-lieve ya’ got the swimmers to gab at me, blowin’ bubbles slap full a’ bullshark.”

Just behind her, the light held steady at green. The advisor stumbled in his warning, horrified and relieved and stalled by his shock as her hair whipped away from her face and her words trailed off. There’s a second where the familiar sound of the airlock opening seemed to halt time. Meenah looked over her shoulder, and then to the projected feed of the lower blooded troll. For the first time in sweeps, she barked a laugh. And then? “Son of a’ eldritch pailin’ bitch.” She bared her impressive chompers, fins flared backwards in her surprise, disbelief, and pure offense that someone has made an attempt on her life. The tyrian scrambled to dig her claws into the metal wall beside her, a cringe worthy noise produced when they drag through the reinforced metal. “You gotta be krillin’ -“

“Maybe if -“

In what might be the most anticlimactic turntables of a story ever, the airlock smoothly opens the rest of the way. Sweeps in the past, there is a time traveling maroon blooded, grudge obsessed troll glancing through the ages and chortling at a joke no one will understand much less believe. The seadweller’s yellow painted claws dig and clip away in a desperate swing at survival. The hatches to the other blocks through the stem are sealed shut, and whatever artificial air was being released dissipated the minute the immediate area was exposed to space. Meenah had a moment, maybe two, to reflect on the mistakes that led her here. Putting an airlock directly outside the door to her block, entirely for the purpose of disposing of any unwanted visitors. Not once considering that someone might turn this around on her, or capitalize on her desire for the dramatic. Leaving her block using her balancing prongs at all, when a transportalizer would have been safer and faster - but would ultimately have lacked in the build-up of intensity and hostility that a chance to strut and lament and publicly humiliate and shortly thereafter kill her most recent workplace pest. If she had more time, she might have thought of a few more excuses to shift the blame a bit.

Including, but not limited to: This Must Entirely Be Megido’s Fault And Here Is Why, the three part series of essays assembled by Meenah Peixes. Or the potential ways Aranea could have somehow subverted death and the fate of their session altogether to somehow ruin the one fun thing she has EVER had the chance to do, seriously, what a Jealous Jude. Or maybe this is the fault of the younger Vantas, who mysteriously fell into her lap around a sweep ago and... well, he was disappointing as a whole until he managed to actually do a backflip off of the handle and body his way out of holding.The diversion of resources from the facility had been an oversight, and the cause of it was promptly replaced and reassigned to dinner duty. A more appealing way to refer to the main course.

Any of those things could have led to this, but none of them did. All the time in the world, and she likely never would have thought her laziness would play a part in her downfall.

It did, though. The metal peeled away from the support column, and the lurching movement broke her grip. It was inevitable. Meenah tried to yelp out a curse, perhaps one last bit of defamation for her last words, but nothing actually came from her throat. Her lips twisted and her expression caught somewhere between anger and fear. The last thought to coherently hit her ends with ‘- and this bucket of chum is the last thing I get my peepers on, really?’ as she wS forcibly removed from the flagship and sent careening into space.

A few blocks and a couple lifts away, the flabbergasted advisor had already dispatched armed forces. Not that it mattered, he decided. The connection to the tiratop flickers more and more as she departs, but the image of his frozen taskmaster tells him there’s no rescuing from that.

Her skin was flaking with ice, fins back and shining tyrian as they stretched, thin eyes obscured by the ice on her lashes, teeth exposed from where she tried to get the last word. The sight of her being quickly and surprisingly easily dispatched hadn’t left him hopeful for saving her, and the last glimpses of her expression deterred him from even attempting to recover her corpse.

The Empress was dead.

My response to the Government of Ontario’s proposed Cormorant cull

This is what I submitted as a response to the Ontario government’s proposal for a cull of double-crested cormorants in the province.  I am proud of what I’ve done here, and maybe this can open some eyes to the prejudice levelled at these magnificent animals, and the gross unfairness of it.

I’ve been in love with these birds since I got the rare and exceptional honour to hold a young one during a banding expedition a few years ago. We’d ventured to an island in Lake Huron, just a few rocks, some grass and a spindly bush poked above the waterline.  And on this island a small colony of Cormorants, maybe 50 or 60 pairs, nested beside and even smaller colony of great blue herons.  I left that day feeling like my first child had been born ... admittedly, a grey down-covered one.

Biases

I believe it is important to state my biases before stating my position, so you know where I’m coming from.  I am not affiliated with any organization, though I have read a number of responses to this proposal.  I am not a hunter, though I do not have a problem with hunting as long as the hunter seeks to use as much of the animal hunted as he or she is able.  I am not an animal rights activist, but I believe in conservation, ecology and evolution.  I am not a birder, though I do enjoy birding when I get the chance to do it every couple of years.  I am not a scientist, but I am a fan of science.

Reasons for the Proposal

The MNRF proposal points out that cormorant populations “declined significantly in the Great Lakes from the 1950s to the 1970s primarily due to environmental contaminants affecting reproduction,” (ERO) and that cormorant populations have rebounded since, and have achieved what appears to be a stable population.  That has to be one of the great conservation success stories, isn’t it?  So, what’s the problem?

The MNRF proposal also states concerns from “some groups (commercial fishing industry, property owners) and individuals” (ERO) about the impact of cormorant populations on fish and other species populations, island forest habitats, and aesthetics.

Other respondents (Kroc, others in Further Reading) have pointed out that there is no scientific evidence of cormorants impacting fish populations.  In fact, since cormorants are a native species, their relationship with their native prey species is balanced by natural ecological processes.  In fact, cormorants, being opportunistic with regards to their prey, makes them an important part of any strategy to manage invasive fish species.

So, without knowing what the “other species” are, that leaves the island forest habitats and aesthetics reasons, which are really the same thing, aren’t they?  What happens to the trees in arboreal cormorant colonies doesn’t look good.  The trees are killed by the nesting birds, leaving guano covered skeletons.  But, this happens locally.  Normally, the cormorants that nest in a given location return to that location, year after year.  If a colony is successful, then new trees next to the old ones might get killed as new nests are established.  But in a stable colony, the number of dead trees will not change from year to year.  It’s important to point out that this is a natural, native process, and part of the evolutionary processes that act on the trees as well as the cormorants.  Labelling a natural process as ugly is grossly anthropocentric.

Method of the Cull

The MNRF proposes to utilize the small game hunters of Ontario to engage in what is ostensibly an open, unrestricted hunt of cormorants.  The proposed March to December season is broader than the birds are present in the province.  The 50 birds a day limit (with no hold limit) is practically an invitation to shoot as many birds as the hunter wants.  This is reckless enough to allow Ontario hunters to easily wipe out all cormorants in Ontario in a single season.  For example, if the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters 100,000 members (OFAH) shot an average of 2 ½ birds each, they could wipe out the approximately 250,000 cormorants in Ontario (Kroc).  Even if the proposal is amended to restrict the hunt to times outside when cormorants are reproducing (i.e., early spring and fall, as the OFAH proposes), the potential to wipe out the adult population of cormorants in Ontario in a single season with any kind of hunter-based cull remains.

Despite the dire potential of this plan, I believe that an ethically self-interested hunter, when presented with the reality of the relative inedibility of cormorant flesh, won’t bother to spend the cost of a shell and the effort required to set out to shoot and kill even one bird.  This would be fine if all the hunters in Ontario are ethically self-interested, which I doubt, considering the OFAH’s largely supportive response to the proposal.

The OFAH, in their response to this proposal, compares cormorant populations to that of snow geese, and by doing that suggests that the proposed daily limits on cormorants is reasonable compared to the 20/day limit on snow geese (50/day in the Hudson/James Bay area) (OFAH), stating that the daily limits on snow geese have yet to have any real impact on the populations of snow geese.  This is misleading.  The North American population of lesser snow geese is estimated to be 15 million individuals (DU).  This dwarfs the population of cormorants.  Which seems to beg the question, is a quarter million individuals really an indication of an out-of-control population?

Anecdotal Cautionary Tale

In 2015, the US Army Corps of Engineers began a campaign to control the population of cormorants that nested on East Sand Island at the mouth of the Columbia River near Astoria, OR.  This colony was home to more than 16,000 cormorants, the largest in North America at the time, and represented approximately 40% of the cormorant population west of the Rockies.  The Corps oiled the eggs in 6 thousand nests and shot more than 5 thousand birds over the following year.  In mid-May of 2016, the colony experienced a complete collapse; 16,000 cormorants abandoned their nests and the eggs in them in a single day.  Only a few hundred birds returned to the island in 2017.  The rest, it is assumed, spread up-river and established new colonies (CBD).

This case illustrates one, probably unintended, consequence if this, or even an amended cull, is enacted: colony abandonment.  Without the cull, cormorants will return to the colonies they went to the previous year.  With a stable population of cormorants in Ontario, these colonies will not change, nor will new colonies likely be established.  However, if even one colony is abandoned, new colonies will be established to replace it the following year.  So, if aesthetics is really a valid reason (perhaps the only potentially valid, if morally questionable, reason left after the other ones have been demonstrated scientifically to be invalid), instigating the proposed cull will very likely result in more colonies being established.

The Real Reason?

The East Sand Island colony of cormorants used to be the largest in North America.  Now that honour belongs to the colony in Tommy Thompson Park.  That number of cormorants positioned next door to millions of people must look like cormorant populations are completely out-of-control.  It’s natural for humans to look at a thing and assume that all other things like it are the same.  In this case, however, humans would be wrong.  The colony in Tommy Thompson Park is big, bigger than the East Sand Island colony ever was.  The damage to the forest of the park is easily visible from various yacht clubs, Cherry Beach and the Toronto Islands.  Rather than being celebrated for the amazing feat of nature that the colony represents, people complain about the dead, unsightly trees.

I’m certain the OFAH would also back down from its position, once they can be shown that cormorants not only do not affect fish stock levels, but are a part of the natural life-cycle of those fish, increasing the evolutionary viability of those species.  A cormorant colony should be a welcome sight to an angler, since its presence indicates a thriving fish population, for without the fish, there wouldn’t be a colony.

An Alternative Proposal

The scapegoating of native species is an old world, imperial, father-knows-best practice.  There is no scientific evidence to support the cull, or the reasons given for it.  Yet, the stereotype of cormorants as fish guzzling monsters persists.  Which is strange, since there are many different piscivorous bird species in Ontario.  Is the prejudice because cormorants are black?  Is it because of their unsightly tree nesting colonies?  Regardless, it is unfairly bestowed.

I suggest, as an alternative to the proposed cull, an education program aimed at the individuals and groups that believe that cormorants are pests.  Present them with the research on the lack of impact of cormorant populations on fish stock levels.  Talk about evolutionary and ecological processes and the web of predation that sustains the dynamic populations of native species, stabilizing their populations over time.  And, especially, make sure they realize the conservation miracle that allowed cormorant populations to recover after DDT ceased to be used.  And maybe statements about how cormorant populations have exploded since the 1970s will said only in celebration of how humans saved cormorants from the brink of extinction.

A Turn

"The air conditioning, the light, and the quick-reach can of bug spray are keeping them at bay. Cockroaches. I fear them deeply, and this summer has emboldened them. What once was a monthly occurrence became a near-daily one. Sometimes they come from outside, slipping their flat bodies through the doors leading to the garden and garbage area. More often, they fall from nearby ceilings. This building is near a century old, and its inner workings could be harboring a proper infestation. I spend the nights here cowering at the desk, the air pumped full of the rather pleasant-smelling aerosol. Since they fall from the ceilings, every click triggers a hunt; for the most part, it's been just the ice machine crackling. Going for a smoke break has become a double-edged sword - it allows me to leave the limbo, but the unattended reception might lure these unpleasant fear-inducing insects. I still haven't managed to quit, and I'm thinking smoking will continue as long as I work here. This last smoke break had a fun encounter - the local cat has come around. He usually hangs out in the area, and used to always come to me back when I would go out for pipe sessions. In recent times, he's been less inclined, far shier. Many smoke breaks were spent looking at him, and him looking at me, from afar. Perhaps the uptick in activity in the area, due to summer holiday season and the influx of tourists, caused him trouble. Tonight, however, he approached. He's grown considerably since I last saw him. Back when I was still smoking with a pipe, he was somewhat slender, with straight fur betraying this physique; now, he's a heavy-set cat, with thick shaggy fur, and a head as big as the palm of my hand. It looks like his demeanor also changed - his usual calm character seems to have turned tired, or even distraught in some way. Still, he inclined to fall on the floor, expecting a belly rub, and candidly turned his head when stroked at the cheek. After this short reunion, he left slowly, first sitting down to interpret the world, and then walked out of sight when I returned to my limbo. In this desk, the air is cold and reeks of pyrethroid. It is a necessary measure, for I must make limbo more hospitable. I'm expecting to be here less often; and should I survive this shift, I will be blessed with a solution - as pest control will arrive sometime this week. I've considered no longer working here, but the tides are emboldening me. The neglectful partners, all the way up the chain, seem to have grown exasperated with this place - likely due to the hotel not being a profitable venture - and are expected to hand the management to a new staff. With my incessant complaints and subtle sabotage, I want to believe that I played a part in their decision.
