The Other Lost City of the Incas: Choquequirao
The Archaeological Complex of Choquequirao is located in the region of Cusco. Its vastness and beauty can only be compared with Machu Picchu and Kuelap. From the Andean Town of Cachora, in the region of Apurimac, it is possible to get to Choquequirao after an intense and strenuous hike of 32 kilometers.
Choquequirao is located 3033 feet above sea level in an ecological area known as "cloudy forest."  During the rainy season (November to March) there is usually abundant fog and rain at night and the early morning.  The dry season (April to October) has very little rain and the mornings are usually hot and sunny.
The best time of the year to visit Choquequirao is between mid March to mid May because the rainy season is ending and the mountains surrounding the Apurimac Canyon and River of the same name are abundant with vegetation.
From Cachora to Choquequirao, it is possible to find the campsites of Cocamasana, Chiquiscca, Playa Rosalina, Santa Rosa baja and alta, Marampata, and Choquequirao. The campsites of Chiquiscca, Playa Rosalina, Santa Rosa Alta, Marampata, and Choquequirao offer good restooms.
Choquequirao was probably the entrance to the Vilcabamba region (beginning of the rainforest) during the Empire of the Incas. Nowadays, less than 30% of the total area has been cleaned and recovered by the Peruvian government. The Main Square, the temple and the areas known as Hanan sector, Llamas sector and Water sector can be visited.
In order to visit all the available areas mentioned above, it is necessary to allow yourself at least 6 hours so it is better to consider a five day trek to visit Choquequirao instead of four which is the regular tour offered by local travel agencies. Travel to Peru and explore its hidden gems.
