Starting New
Its finally here, I’m finally down in Australia for my first time since 2017. I haven’t been here very long — still less than 24 hours — but this still feels so crazy. Like, what am I even doing here?! It doesn’t feel real even. Yesterday I walked around and I think I was on autopilot. I’ve felt a mix of everything from nervousness to excitement. Sure, I’ve been a bit anxious too. Everything is a mystery right now and I feel like I’m starting new. I’ve got a new phone number, I’ve applied for a tax number, I’m getting a new bank account, in all, I’m doing things that are getting me started for a (possible) year long journey down here. I don’t have to stay the entire length of the visa, of course, but that option is always there. Its incredible.
The weather was gorgeous when I landed. It didn’t seem it was going to be that way on the airplane’s approach to the Australian coast. There were massive cumulonimbus clouds and it seemed as if Sydney was having a massive thunderstorm as we moved closer to land. As we made our way through the clouds, they all seemed to disappear at once, and nothing but the morning light rising to the east had shown over a sleepy Sydney. It was beautiful. Landing, I was hit with the familiar scents and warmth of humidity that comes after a rain and a heavy storm — I guess we did just miss the weather. I made my way through customs and got into the country. First thing I did was I walked outside of the terminal. Paradise. I walked back in to set up my phone’s sim using the airport wifi, made my way to “Macca’s” for a quick 7am cheeseburger, and proceeded to the train station. I got myself an Opal card and topped it off at $60 AUD — thinking that this would be PLENTY. Well, one thing the Aussies do when you take public transport leaving the airport is they charge you a massive amount of money. So as I exited my station at Bondi Junction, I noticed my balance was now $39.87. WHAT? Okay, I didn’t mind. My friend Emily told me that they only do that from the airport. Since then, I have brought the balance down to around $34, but that was after several train and bus trips through the city.
First thing I did this morning after getting to the hostel was to change into my bathing suit. The weather could not have been more perfect, and I mean it. Between the beautiful gentle breeze, cooling me down and relaxing me, and the tall waves crashing down in front of me at a nearly-empty Bondi Beach, I was in heaven. I write this now at 3:30am, completely succumbed to the will of jet-lag, and hoping for a repeat day. Something about all the beach bums with their long hair and wetsuits was really phenomenal. I can’t believe how many beautiful people exist here too. This place is, just, really something.
Tumblr media
In recent days I’ve battled with whether or not I would post here on this page. This was after learning SOME people have access to it :’). But, that was a short self-battle. I’ve always posted here, and I will continue to do so. This is a public forum and I’m glad that I was reminded of this. Nothing about posting online is personal so why should I pretend it is? Its not a big deal, even if I was a bit embarrassed at the fact that there are actually people reading this, and that I’m writing (at times) some extremely personal stuff, as I will below.
I have not really talked about the past week or whats gone on. Last week, before my move to Australia, a friend of mine had come to visit me. This was a friend whom I met in Greece, at a bar in Kalabaka. Thats not entirely true. We met on Tinder, but after meeting for drinks and talking, I gauged everything to be friendly. We kept in touch as we went separate ways — me to Prague and back home, her to Iceland. While I was home she wanted to meet up. I thought about going up to Montreal, but I decided against it and all I could think about was my last visit up there. That was magical. So, I agreed, fully knowing how challenging it would be to try to settle my affairs at home and still travel northbound. She was excited and made plans for the both of us, meanwhile I was trying to find ways to get out of my agreement. I ended up telling her it just didn’t make sense for me to go up there. She, immediately, offered to come down and said she could stay with me. Okay, sure, “yeah, you can stay at my place” that’s okay. She came down, brought me some tim hortons (which I really missed), we mostly watched Star Trek — in separate chairs, we hung out, Mittens hissed at her worse than he’s done to anyone, we went to the Boston Athenaeum and spent half a day there, played trivia together, and we slept separately at night 2 nights in a row. She left that next day.
This is where it gets personal. I guess all of that wasn’t satisfactory for her. She felt confused, I guess, and as it turns out I misread everything. Well, she wanted to come back down before I left, and we set the rules that we are NOT looking for anything together. She again, came down, brought tim hortons again, and I got us a hotel room. It was a great time, we went out into the North End and got dinner and walked around a bit, talked, and hung out. We didn’t do anything that night, but at 3am the both of us woke up and we slept together. Honestly, I couldn’t stop thinking about my ex, and the sex was awful. It really was awful. I hated everything about it. She was beautiful, she had an amazing body, everything was perfect. But I couldn’t help but think of Katie. Now, SHE was good, this was just so bad. I will leave it at that. She really liked it, and she made that known, but man, this made me miss Katie so much. After everything, I stayed in the shower for a very long time and just thought back, replaying memories in my head, imagining her cute little smirk that told me “I love you, Matt” as she…. ugh… well you know the rest probably. I can’t go further with that. Again, this is a public forum, and now that I know it will be read, I’m hesitant to say things that I know would get me into trouble. Still, if I learned anything from this little fling, I learned that I am not over her yet — and that I took the sex for granted. I hope kt still thinks that I was good 😂😂 not that it matters. I’m hoping things will be different down here in the Land of Oz.
p.s. This all took me a while to write and two of my roommates at the hostel have been talking (and moaning??) in their sleep. I’m the only dude in this room of 8 people which is insane. Anyway, I have to pee and have been trying not to get up, but I definitely have to now. I’ll try and update as my life gets more interesting. Also I need a pair of socks like this guy:

#IStandWithNoOne
Tumblr media
Every artist and person has the capacity to let you down. Maybe it’s as simple as not liking the tone of an answer of an AMA of what I deemed a perfectly innocuous question about how to best make connections in a music scene; and I ask this question to a slum lord prince of vaporwave. And then he snottily some sort of cold hard reality about how you can only rely on yourself…He’s still one of my great birthday twins and I see the folly of my ways.
Every subreddit is usually comprised of angry lil obsessives. No, darling, I don’t need to see another discography S tier ranking. And it is in this type of fandom that the fair weather blowhards dig their lil heels in deeper for their problematic fave’s microwavable take. And yes I am mostly still talking about the Roisin Murphy subreddit. At least the Of Montreal subreddit has the ongoing mildly amusing gag of people asking “Where is a good park I can visit?” Or “airbnbs closed to the Airport,” inquiries of would be Canadian tourists. Ah to live a life so low stakes that traveling to Canada is something you do just for fun.
Tumblr media
It was reported that Roisin Murphy’s former label Ninja Tune was going to donate all proceeds to a trans health organization. No name of an organization was given and it turned out to be yet another bad piece of PR. A screen grab of a Roisin Murphy reply confirming that Ninja Tune is not diverting funds from her album. And unless you have an X account I can’t read this reply. Why oh why be a reply person. Why oh why comment at all.
I stand with no one. Especially not jerks that have any concern about someone’s tran-ness or personal bodily autonomy choices. Yes I will patron an artist I support. And that’s usually just podcast men or newsletter garbage men. But I will stream your album on Apple. And leave it at that. I won’t be assimilated into someone else’s worthless cause. Fandom should not be labor. Fandom is a state of mind. I concede fandom is labor, an exhausting emotional labor taxing upon the very soul. Keep it silly season. Put on anatomical lung shapes sunglasses and walk off into the overly bright dawn.

Less than a quarter of Canadians are happy with how the government spends money: Ipsos survey
Less than a quarter (23 per cent) of Canadians think the federal government is properly spending money on the most important issues facing the country, according to new survey data from Ipsos.
The survey, conducted on behalf of the Montreal Economic Institute, also found 64 per cent of people think the government is doing an ineffective job allocating funds to address important problems, while 13 per cent said they don't know or preferred not to answer.
More than half of Canadians (55 per cent) said the government spends too much money, while 27 per cent think it is an acceptable level, according to the poll. Only nine per cent of Canadians said government spending is too low, while another nine per cent said they don't know or preferred not to answer.
The majority of those surveyed (67 per cent) think they pay too much money in income tax, while one per cent think they don’t pay enough. According to Ipsos, 65 per cent of men and 70 per cent of women believe the amount they pay in income tax is too high. Younger Canadians (aged 18 to 34) are more likely to think taxes are too high (72 per cent) compared to Canadians aged 55 and older (63 per cent).
The poll also found most people (63 per cent) are unhappy with the accountability and transparency of the government's spending practices—31 per cent said they were satisfied with them.
The poll gauged Canadians' thoughts on carbon pricing, which people are generally slightly more likely to dislike. Ipsos says 25 per cent of Canadians strongly oppose it and another 20 per cent somewhat oppose it—in total, 41 per cent of people said they support carbon pricing while 45 per cent oppose it. Fifteen per cent of people said they don't know or preferred not to answer. According to the data, 68 per cent of people from Atlantic Canada oppose carbon pricing, while 47 per cent of Quebecers support it.
More than six in ten Canadians think higher government spending over the past three years is causing higher levels of inflation, while 26 per cent disagree. A similar amount of men (26 per cent) and women (25 per cent) said they disagree that government spending is driving inflation up.
TAXING THE RICH
A third of Canadians (33 per cent) believe people who earn more than $250,000 per year can be considered rich, while just over a quarter (27 per cent) say it should be people who make more than $500,000 per year. According to the survey, to be considered a rich person, 17 per cent of people said you need to make more than $100,000, 16 per cent said more than $1 million and seven per cent said more than $5 million.
Ipsos data also shows 71 per cent of Canadians say increasing corporate taxes will drive up prices for consumers, 80 per cent of people from Quebec feel the same, while 24 per cent of people from Ontario disagree. Sixty-one per cent of Canadians say higher taxes will discourage wealthy people from staying in Canada, a similar percentage of people across all regions agree.
However, more than 43 per cent of people believe the rich should pay more than half of their income in taxes while 33 per cent say the rich pay their fair share. Western Canadians were more likely to disagree that the rich should pay 50 per cent of their income in tax, and 35 per cent of people from the same region say the rich shouldn't be taxed further. Sixty-nine per cent of people aged 55 and older say the rich do not pay their fair share of taxes in Canada, while just under half (49 per cent) of people aged 18 to 34 agree.
METHODOLOGY
These are the findings of an online Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of the Montreal Economic Institute. A sample of 1,020 Canadian residents aged 18 years and over was interviewed between the June 29th and July 3rd, 2023. Weighting according to age, gender and region was employed to ensure that the sample's composition is representative of the overall population according to the latest census information. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the results are accurate to within +/- 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20 , of what the results would have been had all Canadian adults been polled. Some totals may not add up to 100 per cent due to rounding.

Why you need to select the best accounting firms is a major question; in this blog, you can get an idea about this factor.
When it comes time to file your taxes, whether it's a personal W-2, an accountant's W-2, a 1098 for self-employed status, or a business owner's tax file, you must specify what to file and where; It is why you should consider working with a professional accounting firm to decide what to do to file taxes, when it comes time to do your taxes. The most important thing is to consider the right accounting firm to file everything correctly at the right time, so when you file, find the right firm ahead of time. In Montreal, there are large numbers of Accounting firms Montreal available.
Why choose a Reliable accounting firm?
As a service provider, you will undoubtedly want to see that the accounting firm in Montreal you are looking to work with is trustworthy enough and that they stand behind your work. These are the factors you should consider when you choose an organization:
How long have they been running the firm (or working as a private accountant), serving their specific clients?
The types of organizations he works with are deeply personal enrollees, large and small-scale business organizations
In order to find a trustworthy accounting firm in Montreal, one should inquire about the number of tax returns it has filed over the last 12 months.
The morning the written commitments are provided; the auditor should take a closer look at the firm to see if they can stand behind it as a document.
A number that is or may be subtracted can be found when you are taken to register your account and accounting firm in Montreal.

This might just be me whining but I am really pissed off about Brexit. I know it’s late but let me explain, if you will.
I have always wanted to go to college in England (or at least an english-speaking country because I wanted to improve my accent and be able to communicate with more people). Since I was in middle school and even before. At that time I couldn’t speak english at all, I learned it when I finished middle school (if I translate it in USA/Canada/Australia school levels and year 9 for uk) because I wanted so badly to go to England and be able to speak with people.
Last year I went to Montreal and I didn’t last (well...Covid didn’t help) and I came back to France. It was a great experience because I got to study abroad, which I’d always dreamed of, but I felt like a coward for choosing the french part of a big english-speaking country. However I did attend a meeting with one of the few english-speaking schools in Montreal and it frightnened me. The few times I’ve spoken with english-speaking people (mostly natives), they could never understand me, unless I was playing in the very obnoxious fernch accent that is easily mocked.
Anyway, I thought that if I got to fully immerse myself in an english-speaking environnement, I might get better. So now that my preparation year is done I thought I might try and finally go for it and try to apply for UK schools. I know it isn’t cheap so I must find the right one and work during summer and also during my studies if I can, in order to afford it. And it obviously meant making a loan.
The thing is, when I started looking up universities a few years ago, most of the fees gravitated around 10 000 eur. It was a lot but if we borrowed money from the bank and I got a job it was doable. It’s approximately what an private engineering school costs here and my oldest brother did a few years in one of them. When I went back to thoses universities’s websites I had to check out the fees for international students, thanks to Brexit, and I really didn’t expect that. It double, almost triple the price ! It went from 10 000 eur to almost 29 000 eur ! And it’s revolting ! First of because this country is a bloody 2 hours and 15 minutes ride away. And second because how can you charge so much for education ?
My mother told me that it’s because they want to keep their knowledge to themselves; they want English students. Is it great though ? That they always teach about being to other cultures (in France and Canada, Quebec, at least, I don’t know if other countries hold the same values) but then everyone just want to have students from their own country. Also I really really don’t believe that international students have any plus in their education, no more guidance or services just dedicated for them that they deserve to pay three times what a English person must pay. Worse ! They have to make more sacrificies and pay for more stuff just to be able to study in England.
I compared these universities, which are not like...the top universities of England, to the top public university in France, The Sorbonne. The Sorbonne charges international students 6 500 eur. I might not have taken into account how universities are run in the UK but I know that in France, French people pay for public school through taxes which explains why it’s so cheap, and almost free in some cases, for french students. Even though you are going to a private school, you or your parents are paying for public schools through taxes. Another one is Polytechnique (X). It’s kind of different for french students since it implies that you will have to work for the government (administration or military service for about 10 years) but for non-EU international students the highest they have to pay is 15 500 eur, almost half what an international student must pay in England for an average university.
Anyway what I wanted to say is that it pisses me off that english universities’s fees are so high. What’s funny though is that if I go 6 000 km further to Canada it’s almost cheaper.
Well, that was quite unnecessary. It’s not like it’s going to change anything. I’ll stick with my excuse for english and if they don’t understand me I’ll go back to french. At least I tried to learn another language.
