Peace and Balance in Uncasville

Bonner’s first season with Connecticut took place in the bubble due to COVID-19. The Sun went 10-12, but were competitive in the playoffs, impressive considering that Jonquel Jones opted out due to health concerns (2nd team All-WNBA in 2019 when the Sun made a run to the Finals).

The bubble was about growth for the Sun on the court, and growth off the court for DeWanna and first time teammate, now fiancé, Alyssa Thomas.

“It was literally nothing to do there (the bubble) but spend time together, we were there like three months, every day together, so that just became our normal routine. And now, when we’re here (Connecticut), you just add two crazies (DeWanna’s twins, Cali and Demi) to the bunch…we were both just at a place in our lives when we met where it was like, ‘OK, we’re gonna make this work,'” says Bonner.

Erica was in the bubble with the Dream and Lynx, witnessing their growth together in all facets.

“They started off kind of coy and shy around one another,” Erica said. “As time went on, they became this dynamic duo.”

They’d never played together in the W or overseas. Thomas had a strong impression of DeWanna’s game already before she joined her team, but DeWanna was taken aback by Thomas. She knew she was good, but acquired an even better appreciation during their first practice together.

“I literally told her when I first got here, Damn, I didn’t know you were that good…I legit looked at her one day and was like, ‘I’m sorry, I owe you an apology,'” says Bonner.

On the court, the pair are demonstrative, they’re expressive, playing the game with the same fiery passion and spirit. They could not be further from their on-court personas the second they leave the hardwood.

They’re both quiet and reserved, self-described as homebodies. DeWanna is more outward with jokes and a bubbly attitude while Alyssa has a drier sense of humor.

The competitive fire they share on the court is arguably as intense off of it; board games are a battle, they’ll race one another to stop signs, even in-game they’ll have competitions for who can get the most steals in a given game. Alyssa owns anything strategic, so anytime DB steals a game or a hand of cards, Alyssa never hears the end of it.

They bump heads, often because of something that took place on court or in practice.

“Nine times out of 10 it’s because of something Alyssa did,” says DeWanna.

Their relationship has a yin and yang balance; AT is the more vocal leader who is always going to point out a mistake and show a teachable moment, where as DB is described by most of her teammates as the mom of the Sun. She’s going to walk up and put her arm around you, listen to you, give you words of encouragement. There’s an equilibrium created by their polarity in leadership styles.

“Her energy is just special,” says Thomas.

“No matter the situation, she brings people joy, she brings me joy.”

Thomas is routinely inspired by her fiancé and her ability to be a star on the court while remaining such a present mother off of it.

“It’s a full time job outside of basketball… early mornings, late nights, waking up in the middle of the night,” Thomas said. “What she’s able to do with them and then perform… I’m in awe watching her.”

Cali and Demi split time half and half with their mother Candice Dupree in Texas, and the other half with DeWanna in Connecticut.

“When they’re here, it is literally non-stop,” says DeWanna laughing and looking around behind her. Cali and Demi are drawing on a whiteboard after begging for markers.

“For instance, yesterday, game day, I wake up and I’m attentive to them. Alyssa’s sister is here to help watch them so I don’t bring them to shootaround… it’s very eventful, I come back from shootaround and play with them and take a nap on the floor… wake up to go to the game, then we don’t get to sleep til about midnight, because once we hit the door, it’s ‘Watch me Mom, play with me, let’s do this!’ It’s very busy, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

When she’s overseas, she’ll facetime the girls before and after games. Any opportunity to be present for her daughters is essential to her.

Connecticut isn’t for everyone. But, Bonner and Thomas have both fallen in love with it for similar reasons. They appreciate the peace that comes with living in one of the smaller markets in the league. Bonner says that she’ll force herself to go out with teammates on the road occasionally, but the second they’re back in Uncasville, “finally, I’m at peace.”

8月4號 Day 24: Independent excursion

Today I woke up and decided to go on a little shopping spree. As I was walking to my first stop I walked by a massage place and was cat called. That was very interesting. The lady I was buying something from only spoke Chinese, but I ended up finding what I wanted and tried to bargain with her a little. She started the price at 590, then lowered it to 500 without me asking her which was nice. I then asked her if she could sell it for 450 and she happily agreed. This might sound good but I previously saw something similar she was selling for 390. So I feel like I could have gotten a better deal, but it was still relatively cheap. After that I walked over to the bus stop to get on the bus in order to go back to the mall. Yesterday, I saw something that I thought would be a good gift so today I went back to get it. It was NTD 1580, and the lady was really nice who I bought it from. She mainly spoke Chinese to me and helped me try to get a tax refund for the gift, but it was not expensive enough. It had to be above NTD 2000, so I did not get a tax refund unfortunately. Then I took the bus back home. I left the hotel around 10:30am and did not get back to the hotel until 2:30pm. I then tried to go get lunch around 3pm but I realized that this is the time the bridge turns every day. Since I was not able to cross the bridge, I went to the brunch place right outside of the hotel which was really good. After letting my food digest a bit I looked for a gym to go to and I found one about 1 mile away. So, I decided to run there then workout and run back. At the gym I saw some machines that I have never seen before and it was exactly what I was looking for. It really revealed to me how much I need to work on my functional flexibility. It also made me interested in the Taiwanese gym culture and their view on gym health versus America. After my workout and running back to the hotel I took a shower and me and the boys played some more cards. So fun! Then, later that night, Yeh Laoshi texted us that the Taiwan vs China badminton gold medal match was being played so we did a little watch party and got to celebrate Taiwan winning gold!RAHHHHHHH🥇

Independent excursion

For my independent excursion, I decided to focus on the physical fitness aspect of health. With the recent gold medal win in badminton for the 2024 olympics, I want to see the fitness culture and how fitness is promoted in Taiwan. With this comes my own personal analysis of Taiwan’s fitness industry, specifically, my personal experience in Kaohsiung, and also how Taiwan promotes fitness through city design.

Across the world, there is this fitness movement that seemingly came from nowhere. Social media has been the main factor with the booming growth of fitness influencers. Why is this? Wenjia Li describes in her research article aspects of Parasocial relationships(PSR). She defines it “as the intimate and one-way relationship between an audience and a media persona,”(Wenjia Li). This is what happened recently and it has had an influence on Taiwan’s fitness culture. 

First I will start with the big shift that happened in the world recently – Covid-19. Many people were shut indoors because of the pandemic and as a result turned to social media. Many fitness instructors started to move their in-person platform to online and this is when the big shift started. With many fitness coaches moving online PSR only grew and thus influencing more people to want to go to the gym. This is because there is a direct correlation between PSR and exercise intention(Wenjia Li). So with an increasing online presence, the fitness industry was bound to grow and spread like wildfire.

In Taiwan, there was an over 80% increase in the amount of gyms from the year 2019 to 2023. Just in these 4 years the amount of new gyms almost doubled and a part of that is due to the reason I stated above. I saw the clusters of gyms around Kaohsiung and did not have to go far to find a gym. No matter where you are in the city, there will always be a gym within a 1 mile radius. I actually think that the supply of gyms has greatly overpassed the demand for it. The gym that I went to was almost empty and this might be because there are so many gyms around. 

Another aspect of fitness I want to discuss is cardio. When people think of a gym, nowadays they relate it to strength training but cardio is a very important section of fitness. For me, I ran 1 mile to the gym and what I noticed is that the city is not very runnable. Access to the sidewalks are normally filled with mopeds, scooters, cars, or maybe there is not even a sidewalk. The city is walkable but not really runnable. Engineers for the cities should take into account fitness when designing streets and roads.

Despite the city being slightly difficult to run, and could have better planning for spacious sidewalks, one thing that is unique I noticed we do not have in America is outdoor fitness equipment. At every park there is outside fitness equipment that the general public can use in order to get active and stay healthy. Although many people do tend to use the equipment improperly and can pose safety risks, I think the benefits would outweigh the risk for the general population.

In conclusion, Taiwan, with a lot of other countries, had a huge shift into the fitness aspect of health and how important it is due to the conditions the Covid-19 pandemic placed everyone in. It became more popular online so much that even popular Taiwanese artists such as Jay Chou spread the trend to be fit and healthy throughout Taiwan. As a result the amount of gyms greatly increased in Taiwan in the past 5 years to over 900 gyms(fitness industry boom).

my analysis of Moominvalley (2019)'s season one soundtrack

(yeah I may not be great at this and I may be missing a lot, but bare in mind this is my analysis, not anyone else's. Please be nice to me ;-;)

I'm Far Away:

Snufkin has travelled for the Winter. The first verse is like Moomin leaving letters in Snufkin's bag, wishing him with good travels and a safe return hope. Snufkin is longing for something to change, or maybe something in him to change... The second verse is more talking about his travels and how he longs to return no matter what happens.

Starlight:

I don't know, reading this and thinking of Snufmin makes me concerned. It's SO obvious that it's from Moomin's perspective that it gives me a cavaty. "Please say you'll never leave 'cause it's in your hands" If that wasn't obvious enough, idk what is. This is him just... wanting to be with Snufkin. He knows deep down that Snufkin has to travel, yes it's in his hands but not completely. It's a part of him. This is obviously his mind in a point of time where he hasn't gotten used to Snufkin being away from him, possibly what is reflected in Teety-Woo.

Summer Day:

Moomin doesn't like the Winter because it feels wrong without Snufkin. But he has Snorkmaiden with him at least, and that's good enough right? Snorkmaiden loves Moomin, almost in a similar way Moomin loves Snufkin, but Moomin just feels tied down in the relationship. He thinks he's just thinking like an adult, like a moody teenager or something. But then again, he feels Snufkin is the only one who understands him ("But when you put your hands in my hands/You speak a language only us can understand"). It feels like Summer with Snufkin, but not with Snorkmaiden. He reassures himself that Spring is coming and that he'll see the one who knows him best soon.

Back To The Cave:

We get to look into Snufkin's brain, ooo! This is mainly about Snufkin's feelings about himself and how he hides his true emotions from Moomin and the others. "They can't see behind the camouflage" this is him hiding behind a wise and carefree persona, when deep down he is conflicted about almost everything. It seems when he runs out of things to say or when he fears that he'll show his emotions, he finds time to be alone, shown by the lines "We're running out of punchlines/So watch us crawl/We're crawling back to the cave". But his feelings are getting too much, his fears of being forgotten most likely because he doesn't express himself in the way he should "There's a storm/It's rising". So basically he doesn't know what to do anymore. And I guess the "you can't be truly free if you admire somebody too much" quote can link to "There's no time/There's no place for idles", showing more that this is about Snufkin's emotions.

Love Me With All Your Heart:

now this song choice was intentional. This is mutual pining, their emotions mixing into the same song. They've loved each other for a long time, be it platonic turning to romance or be it always romantic. They both want each other, they both long for each other. But they don't wish for their relationship to change, they want it to stay the same ("When we're far apart or when you're near me", "Love me always as you've loved me from the start").

Home Again:

Snufkin is back home, and he could not be happier. Yeah he likes to travel and be with his thoughts, but nothing is better than being with Moomin, shown by the lines "Nothing could be better/Than when I hold you close to me" and "Who I was back then and who I am now/Makes no difference when I'm by your side".

There Is Something In The Forest:

One day, Moomin and Snufkin are just adventuring as they usually do. But something feels different. Something new. Moomin realises it that night, when sitting hand in hand with Snufkin. He finds himself losing track of time, only paying attention to his friend. When he goes home, all he can think of is Snufkin. He thinks of it as he walks, embracing his new emotions as love, a deep love, for Snufkin. And he never wants to let it go. Ever.

Home:

Moomin has noticed how off Snufkin has been acting, and one day he decides to comfort him. He tells him that if he ever feels like he needs to hide ("Sometimes you only want to hide") or that nobody is there for him, that Moomin will always be there for him. This song can also link to Snufkin's own saying "You must go on a long journey before you find out how wonderful home is", and seems like Snufkin has found his home in Moomintroll.

All Small Beasts:

nah this is crime anthem. Little My is cheering Snufkin up, telling him that people with lots of dreams, emotions and all that should just let it out in a huge show! Commit crime! Burn some signs! Fuck Hemulens, who's to say what they can or can't do? The first verses are her making fun of people being neat and telling Snufkin that bottling up your emotions is just going to tease at you and bite you in the tail one day. But this can also be seen in another way, brought to my attention by my friend Bloom. It can be a song about owning up to your mistakes instead of keeping them away.

Free Spirit:

must I say anything? Snufkin likes being alone and free. The second verse is what I want to focus on however. He knows it's good to be alone and not worry about anything, but his avoiding of responsibility is doing him worse than he knows (much like the "owning up to mistakes" analysis by my friend Bloom).

Country Air:

This is what Snufkin wishes he could say to Moomin. They're relaxing together in Summer, Moomin asleep. Snufkin is thinking in his brain about how much he loves him and just wishes he could say SOMETHING. Winter is coming soon, almost time for them to part. Maybe he can ponder more on his emotions then?

By Your Side:

it seems Snufkin is accepting and returning Moomin's offering of comfort, showing that he cares for Moomin and that he doesn't even need to ask for help, he'll do anything to make him happy.

In Blue:

oh boy

Snufkin fears he made a mistake already. He let out his emotions. Even when reassured that it was okay to do so, he feels utterly guilty, shown by the lines "I built a house from sticks and twine/And you said it would serve me fine/But then the rain could soak me through". He begins to fear that he's being put up with, like he doesn't matter anymore ("Anything to keep me quiet"). But he can't help but feel a strong admiration for Moomin. Snufkin has made so many mistakes, and has so many bad feelings ("I caught a fever like I always do"), yet Moomin is still his friend ("And still you let me stand with you, in blue"). He feels his emotions are his fault, and wonders if he should just stay in the valley and own up to his mistakes and allow others to show their true emotions for him, shown by the lines "I bet next year I'll see you all the time/The fault is all deserved as mine", "Was it all on purpose?/Was this true?" and "Tell me and be honest, was this you?". The phrase "In Blue" could refer to the saying "into the blue", which refers to the unknown. Snufkin is "In Blue" because he is in a stage where he is unsure of what he is hearing and wants to know if it's true or not.

Nothern Lights:

Snufkin's feelings for Moomin are increasing to what is obvious to him as love. "Will you find peace in your heart?" this line could be Snufkin talking to himself. Will be ever come to peace with his emotions and open up?

Ready Now:

Moomin has been there for Snufkin all this time. Through all his doubts, through all his sadness. Snufkin has no idea how to express himself, so Moomin helps him. They take it in turns to just talk about things, and "To my surprise we found my words". All this time, Snufkin believed himself to be free. But now he knows that opening up and embracing how you feel is true freedom. He is ready now.

The Author:

This is more about Moomin. He feels like his future will be like his father's, he already met Snorkmaiden during a big childhood adventure after all, just like Pappa. But he finds his story is changing. He's fallen in love with Snufkin. He slowly realises that his future is his own and that he is in charge of his story. And his story begins with being there for his best friend.

“It’s more of a confession booth song, which a lot of these are. I feel like whenever I imagine myself in a pulpit, I don't have a lot to say that's honest or useful. And when I imagine myself in a position of disclosing, in order to bring me closer to a person, that's when I have a lot to say.”

2. Heatwave

“I wrote it about being stuck in traffic and having a full-on panic attack. But what was causing the delay was just this car that had a factory defect and bomb-style exploded. I was like, ‘Man, someone got incinerated. A family maybe.’ The song feels like a fall, but it's born from the second verse where I feel like I'm just walking around with my knees in gravel or whatever the verse in Isaiah happens to be: the willing submission to suffering and then looking around at all these people's suffering, thinking that is a huge obstacle to my faith and my understanding, this insanity and unexplainable hurt that we're trying to heal with ideology instead of action.”

3. Faith Healer

“I have an addictive personality and I understand it's easy for me to be an escapist with substances because I literally missed being high. That was a real feeling that I felt and a feeling that felt taboo to say outside of conversations with other people in recovery. The more that I looked at the space that was left by substance or compulsion that I've then just filled with something else, the more I realised that this is a recurring problem in my personality. And so many of the things that I thought about myself that were noble or ultimately just my pursuit of knowing God and the nature of God—that craving and obsession is trying to assuage the same pain that alcohol or any prescription medication is.”

“The identity that I have worked so hard to cultivate as a good person or a kind person is all basically just my own homespun mythology about myself that I'm trying to use to inspire other people to be kinder to each other. Maybe what's true about me is true about other people, but this song specifically is a ruthless evaluation of myself and what I thought made me principled. It's kind of a fool's errand.”

“It's documenting what it feels like to be in a cyclical relationship, particularly with substances. There was a time in my life, for almost a whole year, where it felt like that. I think that is a very real place that a lot of people who struggle with substance use find themselves in, where the resolution of every day is the same and you just can’t seem to make it stick.”

6. Bloodshot

“The very first line of the song is talking about two intoxicated people—myself being one of them—looking at each other and me having this out-of-body experience, knowing that we are both bringing to our perception of the other what we need the other person to be. That's a really lonely and sad place to be in, the realisation that we're each just kind of sculpting our own mythologies about the world, crafting our narratives.”

7. Ringside

“I have a few tics that manifest themselves with my anxiety and OCD, and for a long time, I would just straight-up punch myself in the head—and I would do it onstage. It's this extension of physicality from something that's fundamentally compulsive that you can't control. I can't stop myself from doing that, and I feel really embarrassed about it. And for some reason I also can't stop myself from doing other kinds of more complicated self-punishment, like getting into co-dependent relationships and treating each one of those like a lottery ticket. Like, 'Maybe this one will work out.'”

“I have a friend whose parents live in Jackson, where my parents live. They’re one of my closest friends and they were around for the super dark part of 2019. I'll try to talk to the person who I hurt or I'll try to admit the wrongdoing that I've done. I'll feel so much guilt about it that I'll cry. And then I'll hate that I've cried because now it seems manipulative. I'm self-conscious about looking like I hate myself too much for the wrong things I've done because then I kind of steal the person's right to be angry. I don't want to cry my way out of shit.”

These are the pains I will continue to experience, on some level, because they're familiar.”

“I was in the back of a cab in New York City and I started having a panic attack and I had to get out and walk. The highlight reel that I'm talking about is all of my biggest mistakes, and that part—‘when I die, you can tell me how much is a lie’—is when I retrace things that I have screwed up in my life. I can watch it on an endless loop and I can torture myself that way. Or I can try to extract the lessons, however painful, and just assimilate those into my trying to be better. That sounds kind of corny, but it's really just, what other options do you have except to sit there and stare down all your mistakes every night and every day?”

“I was watching people be restrained with zip ties on the news. It's just such a visceral image of violence to see people put restraints on another human being—on a demonstrator, on a person who is mentally ill, on a person who is just minding their own business, on a person who is being racially profiled. I had a dark, funny thought that's like, what if God could go back and be like, ‘Y'all aren't going to listen.’ Jesus sacrificed himself and everybody in the United States seems to take that as a true fact, and then shoot people in cold blood in the street. I was just like, ‘Why?’ When will you call off the quest to change people that are so horrid to each other?”

Today, singer and songwriter Darren Criss released his newest single, "for a night like this".

"for a night like this" arrives on the heels of two previously released singles, "i can't dance" and "f*kn around," each showcasing a completely different side of Darren as an artist. Describing this collection of songs as "character-driven singles," Darren explores even more personas on Masquerade. Darren will perform songs from the EP live for the first time at Elsie Fest on August 29 in NYC as part of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn Festival at the Prospect Park Bandshell. Music has always played an integral role in Darren's artistry. As a solo artist, his 2017 EP Homework debuted at #1 on Billboard's Heatseekers Album chart. Criss has toured to sold-out audiences around the world including headlining the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Festival with multi-GRAMMY Award nominee and renowned DJ Steve Aoki. In 2019, he also headlined the Balmain Music Festival for the Balmain men's spring 2020 show. He has been featured on the cover of numerous magazines including such music publications as Billboard and American Songwriter.

As a songwriter, Darren has penned songs for the comedy musical Royalties, for which he was also the creator and executive producer. He received his first Emmy nomination for songwriting in 2015 for Best Original Music and Lyrics for the song "This Time," which appeared on Glee's series finale. In addition to collaborations with fellow artists including Rufus Wainwright, Sabrina Carpenter, Bonnie McKee, Jordan Fisher, and many others, he has also written for Apple's animated series Central Park.

Criss made his Broadway debut, replacing Daniel Radcliffe in the role of J. Pierrepont Finch in the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Criss later took on the role of Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch and headlined the national tour in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
