Persicaria punctata (Dotted Smartweed) on the left and Persicaria longiseta (Oriental Lady’s Thumb) on the right. This photo was taken near the pond at the back of the farm on 9-7-19. Persicaria punctata has “dots” on the flowers and Persicaria longiseta has cilia (hairs) on their flowers.

Persicaria virginiana, also called jumpseed, Virginia knotweed or woodland knotweed is a North American species of smartweed within the buckwheat family. It is unusual as a shade-tolerant member of a mostly sun-loving genus. Jumpseed is a perennial, named for its seeds which can "jump" several feet when a ripe seedpod is disturbed. The large, velvety leaves of Persicaria virginiana 'Brushstrokes' (jumpseed, Virginia knotweed) each one appears to be brushed with a central 'v' of deep red. Though grown for the foliage this herbaceous perennial also has tiny red blooms late into November. This cultivar is more compact than others.
