Paul Gauguin se sent étouffée par le climat à Paris en l’année 1891. Autour de lui, tout est tellement artificiel et conventionnel: il a besoin de l’authenticité de renouveler son art. À défaut de convaincre sa femme Mette et ses cinq enfants à le suivre au Paradis Perdu, il part pour Tahiti seul. Une fois là, il choisit de s’installer dans Mataiera, un village loin de Papeete, l’installation lui-même dans un natif fait une cabane. Bientôt, il commence à travailler avec passion, la peinture et la sculpture dans un style proche de l’art primitif spécifique à l’île. Au cours de son séjour de deux ans de l’artiste l’expérience de la pauvreté, de problèmes cardiaques et d’autres displeasures mais aussi le bonheur dans les bras de Tehura, une belle jeune fille native.

Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti

In 1891, French painter Paul Gauguin, disgusted with European civilization, and the lack of appreciation for his work, set off for French Polynesia to get his groove back, as an artist and a man. He had enough of a reputation as a painter at the time that he auctioned off his work to pay for the trip. A month before his departure, he gave an interview for L'Écho de Paris, where he explained himself: "I am leaving in order to have peace and quiet, to be rid of the influence of civilization. I want only to do simple, very simple art, and to be able to do that, I have to immerse myself in virgin nature, see no one but savages, live their life, with no other thought in mind but to render, the way a child would, the concepts formed in my brain and to do this with the aid of nothing but the primitive means of art, the only means that are good and true." Jean-Jacques Rousseau couldn't have said it better. Gauguin left his wife and five children behind and set off into the unknown. This first journey (there would be more)—and the relationship Gauguin struck up with a local girl named Tehura—is the subject of French writer/director Edouard Deluc's feature "Gauguin: Voyage to Tahiti." The film is beautiful in spots, and features a believably tormented performance by Vincent Cassel as Gauguin, but unfortunately it has only a hazy idea of what it wants to be about. 

Cassel, his beautiful face lined like a grimacing woodcut, staggers through the film as a man obsessed with his art to the exclusion of everything else. Gauguin had a host of physical ailments exacerbated by poverty, and Cassel often looks too weak to even stand. The opening sequences take place in Paris, showing the rejection of Gauguin's work in one overheard comment ("It looks like it was hacked out of a tree") from a potential rich buyer. We then see Gauguin talking with his buddies in a bohemian Paris bar where bare-breasted women cavort around with men. Gauguin is alienated by society and tells his friends he's going to Tahiti ("So who's with me?" he asks, a line making it slightly unbelievable that four screenwriters are credited). After a brief confrontation scene with his long-suffering wife (Pernille Bergendorff), Gauguin sets off for Tahiti.

During his wanderings through the lush landscape of Tahiti, he comes across a peaceful village, and is captivated by Tehura (17-year-old Tuhei Adams). Her parents ask her if she'd like to go live with him. She says, "I'd like that." (In Noa Noa, the travelogue he published in 1901, Gauguin—a famously unreliable narrator—said it didn't take much more than that.) His relationship with Tehura sparks the creative muse in him. Next thing you know, he's painting her through the days and long into the night, ignoring her even when she says she's hungry. Many of these paintings now grace the walls of the most famous museums in the world.  

"Gauguin" would have been much stronger if it had acknowledged the queasy aspects of all of this upfront. One of the main issues is that, apparently, according to Gauguin, Tehura was 13 years old at the time of their relationship. If you're going to do a biopic of Gauguin, avoiding the reality of an easily Google-able fact feels a little shady, even factoring in Gauguin's propensity to embellish, or spin tales. Clearly it would have been a very different movie if the person playing Tehura had been 13 years old, and the movie probably couldn't have been made at all. Tehura was a huge part of Gauguin's "way in" to Tahitian culture, its beauty, its differentness from his own. He immortalized her in his painting "Merahi metua no Tehamana" (or: Tehamana Has Many Parents). In the painting, a woman wearing a blue and white striped dress, with white flowers in her hair, sits in a chair, holding a rose-pink fan. Mysterious Easter Island glyphs loom behind her, along the wall. The woman's smile is reminiscent of the Mona Lisa's, remote, keeping secrets. Adams is a fresh and natural actress, able to communicate her curiosity about Gauguin, her playfulness in posing for him, and—gradually—her dissatisfaction and sadness at being locked away from her own culture. 

Thankfully, "Gauguin" does not attempt to make this a "great love story." The situation between them is always twisted. The best parts are when Gauguin is faced with his own parochialism, his unreasonable and blinkered need for Tahiti and Tahitians to be a certain way. He is disappointed when Tehura expresses a desire to get a white dress and go to church. He wants her bare-breasted and chewing on a mango with a flower in her hair. That's how he gets his inspiration for his work. There are so many interesting possibilities here about empire, colonization, cultural blindness, and paternalistic attitudes—but it all remains frustratingly opaque.

Dulac—and his cinematographer Pierre Cottereau—have shot the entire thing in shallow focus, with a conspicuous lack of establishing shots. There are only a few times when the camera gets far enough back to see the landscape, a strange choice since it is the landscape which launched Gauguin into new realms of color and mood. The focus is always close in on Gauguin's face, the surrounding landscape blurred out into green or blue. It keeps us so concentrated on Gauguin's experience it blots out the rest of the world.

"Gauguin" suffers from a problem common to biopics: it gets bogged down in the details of a life (while also skipping over unsavory parts of said life) and forgets to illuminate what really matters, why we should care in the first place: the work. What did Tahiti give Gauguin that he didn't have before? What was going on in the art world at the time that made his work so unacceptable? Gauguin's work was controversial then, and it remains controversial. His fame has been strictly posthumous, but his paintings inspired a generation, including Pablo Picasso. When Gauguin's friend, a doctor stationed in Tahiti (Malik Zidi) looks at the paintings of Tehura, he recites, dreamily, "She is a primitive Eve ... She is a Tahitian Venus." He's telling us how to interpret the work, why it is radical and new. He's telling us what to see. It's not enough.

Like a mysterious global system mixing and connecting things and lifes. I loved this projection and I trully wanted to work on a strong visual and narrative concept happening in a kind of future I see. It looks pretty realistic to me. I wanted to carry people in the fantasy lifes of four connected characters, bound together with a mysterious virtual reality game or system. But things won’t work the ways they were suppose to. Because of what ? I prefer people to make their own reading of it. It's awesome beeing able to say that kind of connections would probably be real in the near future. Being able to live a dream, spend a fantasy time, or live something different than real life for a moment. My idea was to involve every character in an other character’s fantasy moment, pretty much forced to be someone’s character to be able to live a fantasy time yourself. I could summarise it by talking about a kind of a Russian Dolls system. Every doll is inside a bigger one, and every doll as got some others inside of itselves, they are all a part of a more global system. It’s been a very ambitious film to shoot, with a very special attention into the casting, locations, frames and light. Pretty awesome experience as a director. The film is about his decision to go to Tahiti and his romance and connection with a young Tahitian girl named Tehura, played by Tuheï Adams. The cast includes Malik Zidi, Pua-Taï Hikutini, Pernille Bergendorff, Marc Barbé, Paul Jeanson, Cédric Eeckhout, and Samuel Jouy. Mon avis

Au début du film, j’ai adoré les prises de vues, plus particulièrement quand Gauguin peint. Proche de la toile, de la palette… je sentais presque l’odeur de la peinture fraîchement étalée. La découverte des paysages de Tahiti m’a émerveillé ! Le bémol, c’est que ça ne s’est pas prolongé un peu plus dans le film…

Le peintre travaillait beaucoup sur “l’art du visuel” et le film reprend le même principe. Il y a peu de dialogue, ce qui n’en fait pas un film “Tout public”. Il y a un aspect psychologique très présent dans cette tranche de vie de Paul Gauguin.

Vincent Cassel, joue superbement, et m’a fait découvrir des traits de la personnalité de l’artiste, comme sa paranoïas. Dans son personnage, il fait bien ressentir la passion dévorante de Gauguin pour son art. Peindre. Peindre. Si il n’y a plus de toile “ordinaire” il fera tout pour trouve un substitut : la toile de jute.

Dans la salle, seule, une personne est sortie juste après que les lumières se soient rallumées, sinon on est tous resté pour voir les quelques œuvres de Paul Gauguin présentes dans le générique final.

C’est un film très intéressant à voir, pour ma part je le regarderai de nouveau avec plaisir, avant d’aller faire une visite au musée de Pont Aven, pour mieux comprendre son art.

Quoi ?  1891, Paul Gauguin part s'installer à Tahiti, vivre de pêche et de peinture, où il fait la rencontre de Tehura, qui devient sa femme et sa muse pour ses toiles.

Alors ? À la base, je devais voir Mon Garçon avec présence de Guillaume Canet entre autres. Mais le cinéma où je suis allé, le diffusait sans l'équipe (car la VRAIE avant-première était à l'UGC des Halles), ce que j'ai appris au moment de faire vérifier mon ticket, avant d’entrer dans la salle. Heureusement, avec la carte d'abonnement tout est possible, c'est pourquoi j'ai commandé rapidement une place (il en restait !) pour l'avant-première en face de la rue.

Étaient présents de gauche à droite, le réalisateur Edouard Deluc, l'actrice Tuhei Adams, l'acteur Pua-Tai Hikutini, l’actrice Pernille Bergendorff et l'inimitable Vincent Cassel. Après un discours sympa et quelques vannes, le spectacle commence...

Il y a clairement une différence entre les américains et les français au cinéma. Pour 2 biopics, avec un personnage propre au pays, au destin peu commun et joué par un star locale connue mondialement, il y a 2 façons de les traiter. Pour Barry Seal avec Tom Cruise, on montre efficacement son parcours avec quelques vannes au passage, tandis que pour Gauguin avec Vincent Cassel, on montre très dramatiquement en longueur des tranches de vie sans réel fil conducteur.

Le mot Voyage du sous-titre n'est pas bien représenté. Déjà on passe de l’Europe à Tahiti très rapidement, soit, c'est sans doute un style recherché. Mais le problème est que c'est pareil pour le reste du film. Il s'agit d'une suite d'événements n'ayant pas toujours de lien entre eux, limite sans grand intérêt. On est trop centré sur ce que font les personnages et pas assez sur le lieu, l'ambiance, le peuple. J'ai connu un voyage beaucoup plus satisfaisant avec Vaiana par exemple et dans le même style, le mélange drame et aventure était plus réussi dans The Lost City Of Z . Il n'y a pas de progression ni d'histoire. Tout s'enchaîne soit lentement, soit passe du tout au tout. Mêmes les gros enjeux ne sont pas poussés, on a pas le temps pour l'empathie ou creuser la relation entre les protagonistes. Ce film aurait pu être une vraie perle si l’essentiel était mieux traité.

Ne connaissant pas beaucoup Gauguin, j'ai plutôt vu ici Vincent Cassel qui parfois jouait le vieux rabougri souffrant. Je l’ai largement trouvé plus convaincant dans Juste La Fin Du Monde, à choisir. Les acteurs Tahitiens ne sont pas assez exploités alors qu'ils ont du potentiel.

Par moment, les images sont belles, mais l'appréciation n'est pas présente si l'on ne s'attache ni aux décors, ni aux personnages. La musique fait un effort d'immersion sans pour autant dépayser.

Du coup ? Une fresque de petits bouts de vie manquant de profondeur tant dans les personnages et l'immersion, le tout sans histoire concrète et un vrai manque d’aventure.
