The 4th of July
On mornings like this my tenderness has left me.
I woke up unsure of how old I even was.
The things I used to notice, dull rain on the window,
Leaks in the bathroom, and mold on the shower walls,
My calves are aching and my coffee’s hot.
These mild emplacements we tattoo onto atoms
Can’t fight nor bite down like a dragon’s jaws,
Like something out of older stories
Where heroes wielded ancient swords, buff guys
And buffer ladies, and cities in the desert—
Is all of this still possible? Us middle class
Bohemian intellectuals aren’t merely wasting time
When we look into the portal of an alien race.
Mere fragments remain of this alethic speech
That muttered, unnoticed, unforgetting secrets
About the eyes of Gods. A petal lights
Against the white paint on the windowsill,
And wine-like scents in what are mere kilobytes
Of atmosphere, in our petit perceptions
Confused into this moving picture of the world.
I looked into the mirror—what did I see?
The women who bothered to put on makeup today.
Ed, Edd, n Eddy was more complicated
Than I remembered. The morning dew is cool,
A placid likeness, dog barks, this distilled
In chance encounters making brand new music,
Brand new necessities we only speak about.
I didn’t go to see the fireworks last night
Even though it was the 4th of July.
I love the canals we dug into this country’s dirt,
Pretend I don’t prefer Japanese media,
I think democracy is functional,
I never downloaded Tik Tok onto my phone,
I’m gonna vote for both our candidates.
This period of history is not
That permanent. Just look at all of us,
A New York boy who’s writing cutesy verse,
New England girls who sprout out of the gardens,
And Alabama gentlemen just looking
For an honest girlfriend: on the internet
We all become the same Bart Simpson meme.
Old truths, like something Aristotle said—
Or things that we all grow up thinking’s true—
Are going forwards and backwards at the same time.
And then there’s me. I’m Super Mario.

BROKEN ROAD, ch. 1/?
A cross-country road trip and a flat tire that just might change Chloe’s life forever. | Bechloe fic.
**You may have seen this posted last night, but I realized I was trying too hard to stick to the one-shot I’m continuing this from, and I had a different idea, so please enjoy this rewrite instead!
(Read it on ao3!)
RATING: G so far | WORDS: 3,142
“Okay, so maybe we didn’t need three packets of those gummy worms.”
Chloe’s frown is set deeply on her fresh, makeup-less face as she looks into the backseat of her car. Before their trip begun, they’d worked out a schedule where each would take their turn in the driver’s seat, and Aubrey is currently the one behind the wheel. It’s the first time Chloe has really looked at the mass amounts of unnecessary luggage the two have brought with them.
In hindsight, maybe they’d bought a few too many snacks, too. Especially taking into consideration everything they both have packed.
Then again, if you were to ask Chloe, everything she has brought with her is entirely needed. Makeup? Needed. Curling iron? Duh. Clothes? Obviously. The notebook she bought at least two years ago now and is still yet to write more than her name in fancy calligraphy across the inner front page? Of course.
This isn’t like a brief weekend trip to one of their parents’ homes. Chloe and Aubrey take those all the time. This is different. It’s their first real, long road trip, something they have been talking about since freshman year. Three years have passed, and now they have this summer, then they’ll be starting their senior year at Barden University in the fall, then life will really begin. Careers, mortgages, adult life, all of the things the girls really do not want to think about just yet. That’s what this is for; this road trip is their last hurrah as young adults with minimal responsibilities, before they’re taking that all too permanent step into the big, wide world.
Chloe drove them from Georgia through Alabama, with Aubrey taking over through Arkansas, before they switched back to drive through Oklahoma. Next they’ll hit Texas, then a couple other places until they’re finally arriving in California. They’re headed up North to San Francisco, to be exact. It’s a place the two best friends have talked about moving to after graduation, though neither has ever actually visited. So, really, there’s a lot riding on this trip, and Chloe’s excitement knows no bounds.
“Can you see the pretzels back there?” Aubrey asks, looking briefly into the backseat through the rearview mirror. The blonde is actually a very careful driver, though that’s not surprising; she does everything very precisely. Her eyes are back on the road within seconds.
“Mm…” Chloe leans through the gap in the seats to reach for what she thinks is the correct package.
“Careful, Chlo!” Aubrey’s voice is shrill as she swerves slightly, and Chloe quietly thinks maybe that was kind of an exaggeration for contact as minor as the way her arm had brushed against her friend’s.
“Sorry, sorry. Here.” Chloe grasps the corner of the bag, something of a proud smile on her lips as she realizes she has, in fact, retrieved the correct one. The car seems to jut a little bit, and there’s a strange sound coming from the back. Maybe Aubrey’s reaction hadn’t been too off beat, after all.
The redhead glances over at her friend, and it’s clear Aubrey can tell something’s going on, too. “Something feels weird,” she comments, face setting into an almost concentrated frown as she looks for a safe place to pull over. “I think maybe we have a flat.”
That’s the last thing they need. Especially since Chloe took her spare tire out of the trunk to make room for all of their luggage before their trip. It had seemed like a good idea at the time; she has been driving for five years now and never has she had a reason to change her tire, she didn’t see any need for it now. Evidently, she’d been wrong.
The road they’re on, it’s like something from a horror movie. It’s kind of deserted, and with the heat from the summer sun bouncing down onto the asphalt, it almost looks as if the ground is smoking in certain lights. Fortunately, this isn’t a horror movie – if it were, this would all be happening at night time. Chloe’s blue eyes flicker toward the digital clock on the display to check the time just as Aubrey begins rolling the car smoothly into a small side road to park up. Just after eleven in the morning, she notices. Definitely not horror movie time.
“What do we do?” Aubrey asks once the engine is cut, turning to look at Chloe. She seems tired more so than worried.
“I don’t know,” the redhead admits, quickly unfastening her seatbelt. “I mean, we don’t know for sure that that’s what’s wrong, right?” She pushes open the passenger door, with Aubrey following suit from the driver’s side. Soon enough, both women are standing in the Oklahoma heat, gawking at the deflating tire.
“You shouldn’t have taken the spare out, Chloe,” Aubrey says very matter-of-factly, to which Chloe scoffs audibly.
“How was I supposed to know we’d need it? Nobody ever needs their spares.”
“Clearly they do,” Aubrey retorts.
That’s the thing with being as close with your best friend as Chloe and Aubrey are, it’s easy to bicker like sisters sometimes, exactly the way they are right now. It won’t fix their problem, but apparently placing blame is the way to go.
“Maybe if we call my dad…”
Aubrey cuts her off. “Call your dad? He’s in Rhode Island, Chloe. What is he going to do from there?”
“I don’t know! Do you have a better idea?”
This isn’t getting them anywhere, and eventually Aubrey is throwing her hands up into the air, before stalking back off to sit in the driver’s seat with the door open, and Chloe bites her tongue to keep from groaning in frustration.
Aubrey’s reaction is really not her fault. Before their trip, her aunt had fallen ill and been taken into the hospital. They’d considered not going, so Aubrey could be home with her family, but everybody, including her aunt, had insisted they leave as planned. So, although they had, Aubrey had been on edge the whole time. Chloe couldn’t blame her for that.
“Look,” Chloe sighs, shuffling over to the driver’s side to offer her friend an apologetic look. “We’ll figure it out, okay? It’s just a flat tire. Maybe we can walk back to the gas station back there, they’ll probably have those hand pumps, right? We’ll inflate it again, then we can go.”
Neither girl had noticed there was even another car on the otherwise empty road with them until it was pulling up beside them, window rolling down.
Chloe’s gaze shifts toward the newly parked vehicle.
“Uh, everything okay?” A brunette calls from inside, her head motioning to the flat tire. “That doesn’t look great.”
Aubrey is a natural leader, a trait she apparently got from her father, so she’s soon climbing back out of the car to see who has come to their rescue. Chloe can tell by the look in her friend’s eyes that the other woman isn’t exactly the hero she’d been picturing.
“Not really. Do you know anything about cars? Or tires, more specifically,” Chloe frowns, stepping back to take in the sight of the now even more deflated circle. The whole car has sagged to one side with it.
“I know that you need to change that,” the brunette responds as she climbs from her own car to join them. She’s driving a truck, a kind of beat up looking one really, but Chloe isn’t here to judge. Soon, she’s standing beside them, and Chloe can’t help but notice, in spite of the situation, just how pretty she is. She’s shorter than both Aubrey and Chloe. There’s a red flannel around her waist, tied around a pair of faded jean shorts. Then again, she could be wearing a trash bag and it wouldn’t matter; on this deserted road right now, she’s an angel in disguise.
“We can’t just pump it back up?” Aubrey questions, breaking into Chloe’s thoughts. It’s really not the time for her to be thinking about how attractive this stranger is. They have a schedule to stick to, and now a flat tire holding them back.
The shorter girl shakes her head in response, hands balled into fists that settle on her waist. “Nope. That thing is busted, you need to change it. Do you have a spare?”
Chloe looks a little sheepish in response, and she can feel Aubrey’s glare burning into her. The brunette, however, seems to chuckle quietly, causing Chloe to raise a brow.
“I’ll take that as a no. Don’t worry,” she shrugs, heading back over to her car, “I do.”
“You’re just going to give us a tire?” Chloe asks, brow quirking once more as she watches the shorter girl lift the lid of her trunk. The way she leans into it has her all but disappearing, though she’s soon standing with what they need. It looks like the weight of it could topple her over at any moment, but she seems to have it handled.
“Sure,” she shrugs, lugging it over to them. She lays the tire down on the ground by Chloe’s car, then heads back over to her own to grab a few more necessities. “We’ll call it my good deed for the year.”
Aubrey looks a little unsure, but Chloe can’t help the amused look creeping onto her face. This girl is definitely an angel in disguise, there’s really no doubting that.
“We’ll pay you,” Aubrey insists, with Chloe piping up, “Oh, totes.”
“Totes?” The brunette questions, her own expression somewhat amused now. Chloe just nods, a little too enthusiastically.
“Do you know how to change it?” The redhead asks, watching with fascination as the shorter girl tosses a couple tools almost lazily onto the ground.
Seriously, is she an angel? Where did she even come from? Why does she have exactly what they need, and exactly the right tools to fix their problem? Chloe realizes that questioning it is stupid. Why question a good thing, right?
“Yeah, I do. You want me to do it for you?”
Chloe nods her head, though Aubrey interrupts.
“No, that’s okay. I’m sure we’ll figure it out.”
Both Chloe and Aubrey know fully well that neither has any business in trying to change a tire. Chloe shoots her friend a look.
“You sure?” The brunette asks, glancing from one girl to the other and then back again. Her brow is arched, hands planted on her hips again. “You don’t look so sure.”
Chloe can’t help the small laugh that leaves her lips in response to the knowing look on the probably-angel’s face, especially paired with the annoyed one on Aubrey’s. It seems the blonde has taken something of an instant dislike to their savior, and Chloe doesn’t really understand why, but she chooses not to ask her. Not yet, anyway. She’ll question her once they’re in the car and back on the road. Not in front of the other girl.
“We don’t know how to change a tire,” Chloe admits. “It would be really helpful if you could do it, yes.”
The shorter girl shrugs, before plopping down onto the ground beside the vehicle. Aubrey looks a little skeptical, but backs over to the side and out of the way. In keeping with the deserted horror movie road, there are a couple large rocks for them to perch on, so Aubrey wastes no time in taking a seat, though Chloe can see that she’s eyeing the shorter girl the whole time. It makes sense; Aubrey has never been very quick to trust a person. Chloe, however, is the exact opposite. It’s kind of a problem.
“Do you need any help?” Chloe asks, peering over to see what the other girl is doing. She can see that she’s gotten to work already.
“No, not right now. I might need one of you to hand me something soon, but I’ve got it for now. It shouldn’t take too long.”
Chloe nods, even though the brunette isn’t focusing on her, then goes to take a seat beside her best friend. She doesn’t even notice Aubrey looking over at her as skeptically as she is, since all of her own focus is trained on the girl currently taking off her tire.
“What are you doing?” Aubrey hisses, nudging Chloe with her elbow.
The redhead looks up at her with a slight frown. “What?”
“Well, for starters, you’re practically drooling all over yourself. What has gotten into you?” Her words are hushed, definitely enough that the shorter girl can’t hear her. There’s a tinge of red creeping across Chloe’s otherwise pale cheeks in response, however.
“Well, yeah,” she whispers back, eyes still on the brunette. “Have you seenher?”
Aubrey doesn’t respond, but Chloe can tell as she looks over at the other girl, eyes practically piercing into her, that she doesn’t see exactly what Chloe does. That doesn’t matter, though. The two have different tastes.
The brunette’s voice breaks into their conversation. “Where are you two headed?”
“San Fransisco,” Chloe explains. “We started out in Georgia, where we go to school. We’re thinking about moving out to San Fran after graduation, but we have to actually visit first before we can make any definite plans. We still have a pretty long way to go yet, but we’re in no hurry.”
Her words pull a burning stare from Aubrey. “We have a schedule,” she hisses quietly, though Chloe waves her off, standing from the rock the two have been occupying.
“Where are you from?” She questions, edging toward the shorter girl.
“Here. I don’t plan to stay here, though. I’m headed to LA at some point pretty soon.”
“Oh? That’s exciting.” Chloe is standing right beside her now, but quickly lowers herself to sit down on the ground. “What are you going to do in LA?”
“Stuff.”
“Stuff? Mysterious,” Chloe teases, blue eyes glistening slightly. She can hear Aubrey clearing her throat behind her, like she’s trying to not-so-subtly grab her attention. Chloe ignores her.
“I don’t think I got your name.”
“I don’t think you asked for it,” the brunette shrugs, finally looking over at Chloe. “Beca.”
“Beca,” Chloe echoes, nodding her head once. “That’s pretty. I’m Chloe.” She motions over her shoulder with her thumb, “That’s Aubrey.”
The mention of her name has the blonde piping up once more. “Is this going to take a long time? It’s just that we have a lot of driving to do.”
Chloe shoots her a warning glance over her shoulder.
“Ignore her, she’s just impatient. There’s really no rush.”
Regardless of whether they’re in a hurry or not, it seems that Beca has things under control, and it isn’t long before she’s fixing the new tire in place, the old one laying deflated on its side beside them. Beca stands up, taking a step back to admire her work.
“All done,” she states, gently tapping the tire with her foot. “Good as new.”
Chloe had retreated back toward the rock with Aubrey, but she stands at the same time Beca does, shuffling to her side and looking down at the new tire. “Wow, you’re practically a wizard,” she beams, crystal eyes glistening once more in the light of the sun. She can’t be sure, but she thinks she sees Beca looking into them for a brief second, though the shorter girl eventually pulls her focus away, instead just shaking her head.
“Not a wizard,” she laughs somewhat awkwardly, “I just know how to change a tire.”
“Good thing you do. We would’ve been screwed,” Chloe frowns, though as her gaze meets with Beca’s again, she smooths out her expression into a small, appreciative smile. It’s something she notices is returned.
“We’ll Venmo you some money,” Aubrey says from behind them, and Chloe can’t help but feel almost sad that this whole meeting is coming to an end already. She has no idea why she cares so much, but she kind of wants to spend a little more time with Beca.
“Will $50 cover it?” Apparently, Aubrey doesn’t share Chloe’s need to be here any longer than necessary. Maybe it’s a good thing, though. Chloe has a habit of getting attached pretty easily, and she has no business doing so with someone she’ll likely never see again.
From the corner of her eye, Chloe sees Beca’s head snap in Aubrey’s direction, and wonders if maybe she was still watching her before.
“I don’t need any money, it’s fine,” Beca promises with a small shake of her head.
Aubrey, always willing to pay her way — both she and Chloe come from families who have never been shy of money — seems horrified at the thought of them accepting help for free. “No,” she interjects, “We insist.”
The two go back and forth for a minute or two, Aubrey trying to urge the fifty dollars onto Beca, while Beca insists that she doesn’t want it. It’s all kind of amusing really, and while it prolongs their time together, Chloe decides eventually that it’s time to shut it down.
“Aubrey,” she pipes up, turning toward her friend. “If Beca doesn’t want money, she doesn’t want money. We respect that.”
Aubrey looks annoyed, but doesn’t respond, at least not right away. Chloe shifts on the spot to face Beca now.
“But at least let us take you out to dinner tonight.”
The look in Beca’s eyes is one of slight confusion. Aubrey had been trying to hurry her along earlier, adamant that they had to get going. However, she doesn’t interject now. Evidently, she’d rather pay her way in some form than stick to their tight schedule, and for that, Chloe is thankful.
“You really don’t have to do that...”
“Beca,” Chloe shakes her head, slipping her phone from the back pocket of her shorts. “We insist.” She unlocks the screen and hands it over to the shorter girl. “Here, put your number in. We’re going to find a hotel for tonight, I think we could both use a break from driving anyway. So you text us and let us know where there’s a good restaurant around here and that’ll be that.”
The brunette continues to eye her skeptically for a moment, but before long she’s reaching out to accept the phone, and Chloe watches her tap her number onto the screen. She bites back her smirk at the car emoji Beca inserts beside her name before handing the device back over.
“If you have my number, how am I supposed to--”
Beca is cut off by the sound of her ringtone, and quickly reaches into her own pocket for her phone. There’s a look of amusement on Chloe’s face as she hits end on the call once Beca has stared at her screen almost quizzically.
“There. Now you have my number, too.”
Continue? No?

The Bachelor Season 23- The Women
So here’s my breakdown of every woman on the Bachelor this season (even the ones who went home night one) mostly just for my own expression, because no one else probably cares. They’ll be judged in the order in which they came out of the limos.
Demi- 23 years old, an interior designer. She’s from Texas, and she’s cute. She doesn’t seem quite mature enough for an engagement, but hey, my mom was 21 when she got married, so who knows? Her mom is in prison for embezzlement, which is... interesting. At least she’s not dodging that truth I guess. Her opening line for Colton is TMI and a little concerning, “I haven’t dated a virgin since I was twelve but I’m ready to give it another shot.” TWELVE??? Honey, I hope you didn’t date another guy after the age of 12 for multiple years. I don’t want to think about the implications of that statement otherwise. She takes Colton aside first at the cocktail party. She says she’s outdoorsy and has a pretty good conversation with Colton. People don’t seem crazy about her, but I think Colton likes her. She’ll probably last a while.
Tayshia- 28 years old, a phlebotomist (I had to google this, it’s someone in the medical field, kind of like a nurse, whose job is to draw blood for testing or donation). She’s from California, and she’s one of the most beautiful women in the whole world. Colton takes notice of this, and says, “Wow. She is GORGEOUS.” as she walks away after she gets out of the limo and they have a short interaction with some nice conversation. She makes a mini date in Tayshialand with carnival-like games for their one-on-one time, and they spend their time giggling and generally seeming to have fun. She’s beautiful and sweet and I think I saw her in some clips from the sneak peek, so I think she’ll make it fairly far into the competition, my guess is at least top 10.
Heather- 22 years old, no job listed. Well, technically her occupation is listed as “Never Been Kissed” which is not a job. Now, I don’t mind that she hasn’t had her first kiss at 22, that’s fine and not as weird as some people think it is. But, if you’ve never even kissed anyone, you can’t have been in a very serious relationship before, which signals to me that maybe you’re not ready to get married, and the Bachelor isn’t exactly a show void of kissing. And I wouldn’t want my first kiss to be with a guy who was kissing five other girls that night. But, you do you. Heather is from California. She seems a little flaky, but overall she appears to be a sweet girl and she’s pretty, so she’ll make it the first few weeks and then be eliminated by my guess.
Nicole- 25 years old, a social media coordinator. Very pretty, from Miami. She’s Cuban and woos Colton by speaking Spanish when she comes out of the limo. I really like Nicole. She comments in an interview that she thinks it’s distasteful that so many women are bringing up Colton’s virginity right off the bat like it’s something so huge to talk about. She’s a little nervous throughout the night because she doesn’t get a ton of time with Colton, but he gives her a rose and she gets the biggest smile on her face. I think she’ll last a few weeks, and then we’ll see. It’s hard to tell when I didn’t see much of their time together.
Caelynn- 23 years old, and she’s a pageant queen. She’s Miss North Carolina 2018 and was the runner-up for Miss America. Needless to say, she’s quite gorgeous, but plot twist- we later find out that she’s only lived in North Carolina for a year! She lived in Virginia like her whole life before that. This is totally unrelated to the Bachelor, but I feel like that shouldn’t be allowed. Did she move to NC just to win the pageant? I don’t get it. Regardless of her home, she seems like a nice person with a lot of good qualities. She connects with Colton during in their later conversation, and I really liked her entrance, where she wore a Miss North Carolina sash that she turned around to say Miss Underwood (it should say Mrs. but I’ll let it slide cause it was cute). She’s Colton’s first kiss of the season, and he’s the one who goes in for it. According to Chris Harrison, she and Colton are gonna get deep later in the season and she’s gonna bring about some important revelations for herself and Colton, so I’m very intrigued. It also seems hinted at that there might be a little bit of a past and some future drama between her and another contestant, Miss Alabama, from the pageant world. Yike. Anyway, she was the first rose other than the first impression rose, which is a good sign, so I think Caelynn will be around for quite a while, and will get a one-on-one date early on.
Sydney- 27 years old, an NBA dancer. She’s from New York (she danced for the Knicks, y’all) and she’s beautiful. Apparently she gave up her job to come on the Bachelor (don’t they all? but I guess maybe this was a more permanent thing? My cousin was an NBA dancer and you’re pretty much done in your late 20′s so I guess maybe it was her last year? idk man). I really like Sydney, she seems super sweet. She has a string quartet during their one-on-one time and teaches Colton how to waltz. It’s cute and they share some laughs. Sydney doesn’t seem into any drama throughout the night, so I applaud her for that. I’d say she’ll last a few weeks, and probably get a one-on-one date at some point.
Elyse- 31 years old, a makeup artist. She’s from Alaska (interesting!) and she’s very pretty (what else is new?). She’s the only redhead on the show, and I love redheads so there’s that. But (I don’t want people to hate me for this but I gotta be honest y’all) I personally think she’s a little old for Colton. Not so much because I think a 5-year age difference is bad but because I don’t think it’s right for Colton, who fits better with someone closer to his own age since he’s still quite young. Her entrance isn’t much, she’s very nervous. But I still like her a lot. Her one-on-one time with Colton involves fishing in the pool, but for a hunk of salmon from like the supermarket, which is weird, but I like her anyway. She’ll last another week or two, and then I hope to see her on Paradise, where she belongs and will thrive!
Tahzjuan- 25 years old, some sort of business consultant. She’s pretty and she’s from Colorado like Colton! She makes a pun about her name but her entrance is nothing special. She’s super judgmental of all the other girls during all her interviews, and I am not here for it. Not a fan. Her time with Colton is cut super short by Interrupty McStealer (we’ll get to her...), which is unfortunate for her, but she was not nice about the other women, and I am not about women who tear down other women for petty reasons (like their outfits and Bachelor entrances...ugh). Anyway, she doesn’t get a rose, and I was okay with it. Other people were pretty broken up about it, but I’ve made my opinion clear. She was pissed she got kicked off and said she thought every other girl should go home before her... I’ll leave that open for interpretation.
Cassie- 23 years old, a speech pathologist and grad student. She’s gorgeous, a natural beauty, and she’s from California. She’s totally my favorite, and she and Colton just seem like a really good match. She comes out of the limo with a cute little box full of fake butterflies and says she’s nervous and has all these butterflies, so she and Colton dump them out to get rid of them. It’s sweet and cute, and they’re very smiley, and as she’s walking away, he thoughtfully picks up a butterfly and tucks it into a pocket inside his suit jacket, with a cute little smile on his face. It was so adorable. Cassie waits patiently to talk to Colton, and during their conversation at the cocktail party, he seems to love that she’s a speech pathologist and works with kids to make a difference, and she teaches him some sign language. She teaches him the signs for “you’re cute” “rose” and “kiss”. (It kinda seems like Colton is gonna kiss her at this point but he doesn’t.) In the middle of their conversation, we see Colton smiling at her and then the show cuts to an interview of him saying that he is “smitten” with some of the women already, and then it cuts right back to him laughing with Cassie... we love. Cassie gets a rose, and I really think she’s a frontrunner. I’d love it if she won the whole thing, but I definitely think she’s at least a top four contender.
Kirpa- 26 years old, a dental hygienist. She’s absolutely beautiful, and she is from California. She seems like a lovely girl with a really nice family (she’s one of the few people we saw an intro package for), but we just don’t see a ton of her this episode. I think I’m really going to like her later, she seems pretty genuine. My only moment of doubt came in her intro when she said she wanted to clean Colton’s teeth... maybe that’s like a romantic thing in the dental world, but to us normal people it’s just weird. Oh well. Kirpa got a rose, and I’m looking forward to getting to know a bit more about her. I’m not quite sure yet how far she’ll make it.
Caitlyn- 25 years old, a realtor. She’s pretty and she’s from Ontario, but I’m not a huge fan. She came out with a balloon cherry and popped it, and I’m just so sick of everyone making such a huge deal out of Colton’s virginity. He didn’t seem to love it as she walked away, but I could be persuaded to come around. Colton seemed to at least warm up to her in the short time they had, though she was also interrupted by the Usurper General. She tells the other girls about how she only got like a minute with him before he was stolen, but it doesn’t seem gossipy, just like she’s disappointed. And I’m on her side here. I actually think I don’t hate her, I just need people to let the virgin thing go. Anyway, she gets a rose later despite limited time, so I think Colton likes her, so she’ll probably hang around for a few weeks.
Courtney- 23 years old, a caterer. She’s very pretty, and she’s from Georgia. She makes a cliche and, honestly, distasteful, joke about him tasting a Georgia peach for the first time, another virginity joke, so I wasn’t loving her at first. She spends a lot of the night talking about girls stealing Colton’s time when she hasn’t spoken to him yet, but doesn’t really make an effort to go get him and talk to him, so I wasn’t loving it. She also made some uppity comments during the rose ceremony about how “if a girl in a sloth costume gets picked over me, I’m gonna be pissed.” (that was the gist, not sure of the exact wording.) Anyway, she does get a rose, so she shuts up, but I’m not loving Courtney. I don’t think she’ll be around super long, maybe a few weeks. Not winner or Bachelorette material.
Katie- 26 years old, a medical sales rep. She’s very pretty and is from the east coast, but moved to California to dance (but her job isn’t a dancer- I don’t quite get this). She does a “card trick” where she takes Colton’s V-Card (have I mentioned how much I hate these incessant jokes?), which I wasn’t a huge fan of, but her intro package was pretty good, even if it was like 95% her working out at a gym for... some reason. However, she had a really great conversation with Colton at the cocktail party about family and values, and she is the second woman he kisses that night. They both say they have a really good feeling about this, which is promising. Colton gives her the second rose at the rose ceremony, and I think she’ll be around for a while, and I think she’ll be one of his first one-on-one dates this season. I have a feeling she won’t win, but she’s one of the only contestants old enough to be a contender for the bachelorette, and she’d be great on BIP.
Alex D- 23 years old, a sloth. Of course, she’s not a real sloth and I’m sure that’s not her actual job (though I don’t what is), but she does come in a sloth costume, talking about how Colton likes to take things slow. I admire the women on this show who wear costumes, it’s brave. Anyway, she’s from Boston, and eventually the costume comes off when she talks to Colton at the cocktail party, but not before she hangs from a tree branch in the yard of the mansion. Once the suit is off, Alex is actually very cute and she is a very fast talker. She named the sloth Susette. Alex seems sweet and cute and she came as a sloth and honestly I have no idea why Colton doesn’t give her a rose. But he doesn’t. BIP? Please?
Onyeka- 24 years old, an IT risk consultant (I don’t know what that is but I’m dumb about computers and it sounds important and obviously techy so she’s probably pretty smart). She’s beautiful and from Texas, and Colton has trouble pronouncing her full name, even though it’s not that hard. Anyway, she’s pretty nice, but shes drama. She takes charge and interrupts the Usurper for time with Colton, with the iconic line, “I heard you were drowning in bitches!” Which is dope, but she also confronts the Usurper one-on-one and is a little rude, but I mean, she’s not wrong about Catherine being inconsiderate and awful, but she lives for the gossip and drama, and will be going after anybody who missteps in any way (there’s always one of these on the Bachelor- the protector against those who “aren’t here for the right reasons”- can’t wait for Onyeka to break out that classic). She’ll stay for a while. Definitely gonna have a two-on-one with Catherine around week five or six, as per usual, and she’ll come out of part one, but I don’t know her well enough to judge how far she’ll make it after that. Paradise guarantee.
Erika- 25 years old, a recruiter. She’s gorgeous, and she’s from California. Her last name is McNutt, so she gives him a bag of nuts in her entrance, which Colton loves. She has to remind him of her name later, but that’s understandable seeing as she’s one of twenty beautiful blonde women he met in the span of about an hour. I’d probably trip up a few times too. She’s one of the first people to talk to him, and brings out the real questions right away, and they talk about why he’s a virgin. She’s impressed by his wanting to keep it special and respects his decision. They have a really nice conversation, actually, and she gets a rose at the end of the night. She’s got potential to make it for a while, but I don’t know enough to tell yet. She won’t win or anything, but could be a contender for Bachelorette if she makes it far enough, or BIP.
Hannah B- 23 years old, Miss Alabama 2018. Hannah B is probably the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life, and she is, obviously, from Alabama. She’s also very real and genuine and incredibly sweet. I really love Hannah B so far. She and Colton just talk a little after she steps out of the limo, and they exchange “Roll Tide’s”. She gets a little worried throughout the night because she hasn’t talked to Colton yet, and just seems to be waiting it out to talk to him, but then she takes initiative and talks to him and it goes extremely well They talk about fears and vulnerability and insecurity and make a promise to always have real and deep talks, and they do a cute little handshake about it. They seem to have a truly genuine connection, and I love her and them. Definitely a frontrunner with a lot of potential. I predict she’ll be in the top four. If she were a little older, I’d predict that she would be a top contender for the Bachelorette, but the youngest Bachelorette to date was 25, so I’m not sure they’ll go that young.
Tracy- 31 years old, a wardrobe stylist from LA. I find this career ironic, as her dress was not something I would ever advise that someone wear (it was like a sequin skirt and a cutoff wife beater tank with no bra- I just didn’t get it, especially for someone who works in fashion, but you do you, I guess). She came in a cop car and called herself the fashion police. Again, I think 31 is a little old for Colton. Anyway, she steals Colton from the Usurper to color shoes and only gets him for like a minute before she steals him right back. She gets a rose at the end of the night. I think she’ll be gone next week, they don’t have much of a connection.
Angelique- 28 years old, a marketing salesperson. They have a short and not super meaningful conversation when she gets out of the limo, but she seems nice enough. She spends a few moments of the evening simply stating things that are obvious and going on on camera in interviews. We don’t hear her conversation with Colton, so it couldn’t have been that great. She’ll probably last another week or two.
Devin- 23 years old, a broadcast journalist. She and Colton have a sweet but uneventful conversation during her entrance, and we see very little of her throughout the night, and we don’t see any further conversation between her and Colton. She does not receive a rose. She is devastated by this and cries a lot as the girls who got roses celebrate in the background. She’ll be on the women tell all and have lots of opinions despite having been there for less than 12 hours, and then we’ll never see her again. I am not broken up about it.
Revian- 24 years old, a nurse. She’s beautiful and tells Colton he’s a stud muffin (a phrase that should never be uttered out loud) in Mandarin. We see a tiny glimpse of her with Colton later but we don’t hear any of it. She does not get a rose.
Nina- 30 years old, a sales account manager. She’s blonde and beautiful and typical Bachelor gal material, but she gives no indication of being a real competitor this season. She speaks Croatian to Colton when she exits the limo and we don’t see much else from Nina. She gets a rose, but she’ll probably go home in a week, two tops.
Alex B- 29 years old, a dog rescuer. She’s pretty but looks like a little like a wax statue, just very non-emotive and seems fake personality-wise. Anyway, she says she’s sick and uses cue cards to communicate, like in Love Actually, but then she goes into the mansion and talks to the other girls (hoarsely, but she couldn’t talk to Colton for a minute?) and then Colton later. Apparently he got her a cup of tea from the producers which is super sweet, and because he’s Colton, he absolutely loves that she runs a dog rescue. This alone will take her through the competition for a few weeks, and then we’ll see.
Bri- 24 years old, a model. She’s pretty and here’s the best part- she’s actually from LA but faked an Australian accent to stand out. This is hilarious and the internet loves it and so do I. Anyway, Bri doesn’t really talk to Colton much that we see, but there’s a deleted scene where she tells him she’s not actually Australian, and he thought it was pretty funny, so I guess he likes her well enough. She gets a rose. She’ll hang around for a bit, two or three weeks would be my guess. Could definitely be an option for Paradise.
Laura- 26 years old, an accountant. Honestly, Laura is boring. I’m sure she’s lovely for like, a real person, but she wasn’t made for reality TV. The most significant thing about Laura in the whole episode is that she wears the same dress as Heather. She does not receive a rose.
Hannah G- 23 years old, a content creator. This Hannah is also from Alabama, and she’s also beautiful and great. It’s a good season for Hannah’s. Colton compliments her dress and she gives him an empty gift box, saying she got him his favorite brand of underwear (if you haven’t heard, it’s been made known that Colton prefers not to wear underwear). He loves the gift, and seems impressed by her. They connect extremely well when they talk later during the cocktail party. They talk and smile and when they both say they’re still a little nervous, Colton takes her hands and takes three deep, calming breaths like he always does with his mom, and they smile at each other like there’s some beautiful secret between them. Later in the night, he gives her the first impression rose. He says that she reminds him of home and makes him feel so comfortable and that she’s so easy to talk to. These are all Bachelor cliches, but they all mean the same thing: Hannah’s a frontrunner, right off the bat. He kisses her after giving her the rose, and says in an interview that he didn’t want to stop kissing her. They have good chemistry and she is equally as excited about him as he is about her. She’ll make it to the top four at least, but I can’t tell much beyond that now.
Annie- 23 years old, a financial associate. She’s very pretty and they talk a little about football, and we later see a small glimpse of a conversation of theirs, nothing to gawk at yet. But we’ll see where things go, because she does get a rose.
Jane- 26, a social worker. She’s beautiful and loves dogs, but it’s a little weird that she brings along a photoshopped and framed picture of hers and Colton’s dogs playing together. We don’t see much else from Jane all night, and she does not receive a rose.
Catherine- 26, a DJ, and a certified Bitch (this is not listed on the show, this is just the whole world’s opinion). A bachelor villain if I’ve ever known one. She’s from Ft. Lauderdale and she calls her dog her daughter, which I find very concerning. She looks like she’s had 8 rounds of plastic surgery in the last week, and she broke an unspoken Bachelor premiere rule: she did not wear an evening gown, but rather a very short red cocktail dress with long bell sleeves (it was actually a cute dress, but it’s supposed to be like floor length night one, everyone knows that). She literally GIVES COLTON HER DOG. Like really. For the duration of her time on the show, Colton will be taking care of her dog. She doesn’t really ask, she just says that’s his job now so like... okay. Anyway, she looks like a younger-ish version of Jennifer Coolidge, but Jennifer Coolidge is a fierce and wonderful woman and Catherine is just a self-obsessed and arrogant girl looking for attention. So, Catherine is the woman I’ve referenced before. She is the Usurper, Interrupty McStealer, You-Know-Who, whatever you want to call her. And here’s why: She steals Colton for conversations FOUR times. FOUR. Because she claims they haven’t had enough time. CATHERINE. YOU HAVE HAD MORE TIME THAN ANYONE ELSE HERE GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND GO AWAY. So, she keeps stealing him, and Onyeka confronts her about it and she gets defensive and judgy, and very fakely says she gets where she’s coming from. During this talk, she also utters the quote, “If you don’t have haters, you’re not doing something right.” I have so many questions. At this point, she’s stolen Colton 3 times. Moments after this conversation, she goes and steals Colton again. I can’t. She spends a lot of interview time criticizing the other women, and is 100% confident that she’s the best one there and that she’ll be getting a rose, even when there’s only one rose left and she hasn’t been called yet. Colton gives her a rose because the producers told him to (we all know this, don’t lie to yourselves), so she’ll stick around for some drama and inevitably go on a two-on-one with Onyeka, the Knight in Shining Right Reasons, and be sent home for being generally awful sometime around week 6. She’s evil. I know with every fiber of my being that she will be on Bachelor in Paradise.
Erin- 28 years old, her job is listed as Cinderella. She’s not like an actress at Disney World, she just comes in a beautiful horse drawn carriage and wears a stunning light blue dress. Erin is beautiful, and says she is looking for her Prince Charming, and leaves behind a shoe with Colton. It’s really cute, and we see them talking a bit later in the night, but despite her cute Disney references and the fact that I actually really like her, Erin does not receive a rose. Maybe I’ll see her again in paradise, but there’s only so much room on that Mexican beach.
Well, that’s all 30 women and all of my 30 opinions. Thanks to the zero people that will read this for letting me judge reality TV stars. To be clear: All these women are people with dignity and deserve to be treated with respect, this judgment is only a matter of who is good for Colton and who is good for TV. Except Catherine. She’s a straight-up bitch. Some people just aren’t nice, and she’s one of them. At least she loves her dog.
Colton, choose well. I hope it’s Cassie, but as of now, I’d be okay with either of the Hannah’s as well. Maybe I’m wrong about all this but I am obsessed with this show (can’t you tell) and it does have a bit of a pattern.

Because permanent eyebrows Alabama, eyeliner, and lip color are meant to stay on the skin longer than regular makeup, the outcomes of any micro-pigmentation processes should be as natural as possible. It is crucial to attaining seamless returns so that the client is comfy with the results 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

MAIN CHARACTERS
• Brandon Reed
- Protagonist
- Full Name: Brandon Eugene Reed
- Nickname: Bran
- Born on May 21, 1996 to Ben and Amanda Reed in Helena, Alabama
- Age: 18; 20 in Epilogue
- Marital Status: Engaged to Liv Walker
- Physical Appearance: Onyx hair that is considered medium-length, and warm brown eyes; had naturally tanned skin like his mother and stands at 6′0″. Brandon’s appearance greatly depends on the factors in his life; with good factors, he keeps his hair styled and his facial hair will be neatly trimmed to just scruff. With bad factors, dark circles will appear under his eyes, and he would begin to sport a beard. Once he got together with Liv, Brandon looked to be under mostly good factors. Coming from a prosperous family, Brandon’s wardrobe was rather sophisticated with V-necks and black jeans with leather bound boots and the occasional suit and tie.
- Tattoos: “Reed” tattoo on right forearm; “Liv, my moon Goddess” on right peck.
- Personality: Brandon is dominant, and is shown to be a natural born leader, like his father; he is outgoing and typically very self-confident. As a Colt-wielding drug dealer for his family, Brandon is feared by most people, but not Liv; she sees through his tough façade and sees the soft orphaned boy underneath. Brandon is also very protective over the his family, and especially over Liv, as whenever they are apart, people try to harm her.
- Education: Honors diploma (Salutatorian) from Helena High School (2014)
1st year Secondary Education student, with psychology at Bellarmine University (as of 2016)
- Occupation: Drug dealer (2011-2015) (formerly)
- Biography: Brandon was born to Ben Reed and his wife Amanda at Helena Medic in the middle of the night on May 21, 1996. Brandon grew up without a mother, and thus always saw his aunt Liz as a mother. Brandon idolized his father, and copied everything he did. Though Brandon didn’t understand at the time, Ben was sick with paranoid Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is something that took over Brandon’s life, with the fear of getting the disease his father had. Due to said disease, the Reeds entered the world of drug trafficking in the summer of 2004. When Brandon was 10, Ben was murdered, and Brandon was given to his godparents, Anthony and Liz. Anthony began preparing Brandon to be the leader his father was. By the time Brandon was 15, he was a well-skilled drug dealer in Reed territory, which runs through the Alabama-Mississippi state line, to Arkansas, to Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Texas, and ending at the Mexico border. In Reed, Brandon is reeling from a tragic accident that he caused, killing a 16-year-old kid; despite his uncle’s warning, Brandon pursues the eldest Walker child, knowing the only life worth having would be with her.
• Liv Walker
- Protagonist
- Full Name: Olivia “Liv” Gail Walker
- Nickname: Livvy
- Born on August 4, 1996 to Charles and Rebecca Walker in Marion, Alabama
- Age: 18; 19 in Epilogue
- Marital Status: Engaged to Brandon Reed
- Physical Appearance: Rich, dark brown hair with chocolate brown eyes and medium-beige toned skin from her days under the Alabama sun. She stands at 5′5″ and has a slim body type. Liv’s hair was long, reaching the middle of her back throughout the novel, then had it cut at the end of the South. By the epilogue of Reed, her hair had grown back out to her shoulder blades. Liv generally wears little to no makeup, not liking how it feels on her skin; although she did like painting her nails in colors like red and blue. Her summer wardrobe consisted mostly of tank tops and jean shorts, with her favorite pair of black sandals or converse; her winter wardrobe consisted mostly of sweaters in neutral colors, with faded-blue jeans and her black All-Stars.
- Tattoo(s): a peony tattoo on her mid-left thigh
- Personality: Liv is seen as being the most responsible and caring, as well as having a natural maternal nature; for her adolescence, Liv was thrown in the “mother” role with her young sister, Zoey, who was sick with paranoid Schizophrenia. Liv has an introverted personality, and only had a handful of friends outside of her cousins. Although Liv fell in love with the first boy she ever kissed, she is not naïve; she never believed her and Brandon could ever have any type of future together.
- Education: GED from Selma High School (2015)
1st year Secondary Education student at Bellarmine University (as of 2016)
- Occupation: Waitress at Papa’s Grill (2009-2014) (formerly)
- Biography: Liv was born at Hurst Memorial Hospital to Charles and Rebecca Walker in Marion, Alabama, on August 4, 1996 in the early morning. Liv was a daddy’s girl growing up; they used to stargaze all the time, and he would tell her stories about the constellations. Charles was killed when Liv was 12, and she had quite a hard time accepting it. At the funeral, she met fellow 12-year-old Brandon Reed, and that set into motion a six year battle of her feelings for him. In Reed, Liv finally opens her heart to Brandon, and together they work towards a better life.
• Anthony Reed
- Protagonist; Brandon’s uncle/Godfather
- Full Name: Anthony James Reed
- Nickname: Tony (by Adrian)
- Born on September 27, 1967 to Peter and Ellie Reed in Helena, Alabama
- Age: 46; 48 (as of Epilogue)
- Marital Status: Married to Liz Reed
- Physical Appearance: Dark hair and light brown eyes; he stands at 6′0″ with an athletic build and a greying beard. Anthony is typically seen wearing button-downs in dark colors, with dress pants and sleek black shoes.
- Personality: Anthony truly is a laid-back person who wants nothing more than to protect his family, and the business his late brother built. While sometimes brooding, Anthony is also seen to have a playful nature, especially towards his wife.
- Education: West Alabama High School (1986)
Master’s degree from School of Business at Duke University (1989)
- Occupation: Drug dealer (2004-present)
                       Business Analyst (1980-2004) (formerly)
Owner of Reed Automotive (2005-present) (cover)
- Biography: Anthony was the 2nd born child to Peter Reed and his wife, Ellie. Growing up, Anthony was very close to his older brother, Ben. Ben is the reason Anthony met the love of his life as she was Ben’s best friend at the time. At 16, Anthony fell in love with 18 year-old Liz Montgomery and never looked back. In college, Anthony met fellow business student, Adrian Lloyd, and the two became fast friends; Adrian, however, had an ulterior motive to taking Anthony under his wing so quickly: he wanted Liz. After meeting Anthony’s then girlfriend for the first time at a dinner, Adrian became infatuated with her. Anthony and Liz were completely oblivious to this. On September 12, 1989, Anthony and Liz got married in Helena with Adrian as their best man. The two honeymooned in Tijuana, and later bought a condo there as a permanent residence. After living there for a little under 2 months, Liz discovered she was pregnant; they were ecstatic. At 22, Anthony was young, but ambitious; he landed a job at Flex as a systems analyst, which paid rather well, and things went smoothly for a while. Until March 6, 1990. Anthony and Ben left for Lake Tuscaloosa, AL for their annual fishing trip; Anthony felt guilty for leaving his 6-month-pregnant wife, but was convinced he left her in good hands with Adrian, who had recently moved to Tijuana. Liz miscarried their child that night, and Anthony refused to believe it was because his wife was consuming alcohol. Afterwards, Anthony and Liz sold their condo and moved back to Alabama, and Anthony distanced himself from Adrian. In 2004, the Reed family entered the world of drug trafficking for the sole purpose of helping people, and Anthony refused to let Adrian anywhere near it to poison it with his money hungry nature. After Ben’s murder 4 years later, Anthony took over and began teach his Godson, Brandon, everything he knew. Over the years, Anthony grew accustomed to losing people he loved from his son, to his brother, to his own father. In Reed, Anthony is a man on a mission, growing tired of the Walker brothers, and stands by Brandon in his quest for a new life, away from drugs and killing.
• Liz Reed
- Protagonist; Brandon’s aunt/Godmother
- Full Name: Elizabeth “Liz” Leigh Reed (nee Montgomery)
- Nickname: Lizzie
- Born on June 29, 1965 in Decatur, Alabama
- Age: 49; 51 (as of epliogue)
- Marital Status: Married to Anthony Reed
- Physical Appearance: Long, raven-like hair that reaches just below her shoulder blades. She has warm brown eyes and naturally tan skin, the Montgomery’s having come from a Muskogee descent. Liz stands at 5′5″ with an athletic body type; she likes wearing warm tones, like tan and dark reds.
- Personality: Intelligent and quick-witted, Liz is not quick to judge and accepts people for who they are on the inside. While appearing to be a naturally happy person, it was something Liz had to work at; being a Muskogee, Liz grew up with a terrible anger streak that was only quelled by her love for Anthony.
- Education: West Alabama High School (1984)
Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from the Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham (1987)
- Occupation: Interior decorator (1991-present)
- Biography: Elizabeth, more commonly referred to as Liz, was the only child born to John Montgomery, a successful doctor, and his wife Loretta, a schoolteacher. Liz grew up in Decatur, but moved to Helena the summer before her sophomore year of high school. There she befriended Ben Reed, a fellow classmate, and the two became quick friends; they were study buddies and played basketball together. Liz was fast to fall for Ben’s little brother, Anthony; they dated all through high school and went to college near one another. They eventually married in the late summer of 1989. After there honeymoon, Liz and Anthony stayed in Tijuana, and prepared for the child they conceived on their honeymoon. Sadly, after an attempted rape by Adrian Lloyd, Liz miscarried their child, 2 months from delivery. Liz felt somewhat lost in the following years, until they adopted two young kids from an orphanage in Decatur, Rose and Owen. Liz latched onto Owen, seeing him as the son she lost. In Reed, Liz pushes for a successful relationship between Brandon and Liv, wanting him to find some sort of happiness after all he’s lost.
• Noah Reed
- Protagonist; Brandon’s cousin/best friend
- Full Name: Noah Andrew Reed
- Born on November 16, 1997 in Helena, Alabama to Liam and Makenna Reed
- Age: 16/17
- Death: Killed by Sheriff Robert Watson on December 31, 2014 (shot in neck)
- Physical Appearance: With blonde hair and light brown eyes, Noah was seen as being boyishly handsome. He stood at 5′10″, being the shortest of the Reed men. Noah, like Brandon, had a prosperous wardrobe, but only wore a tie when he had to.
- Tattoo: “Reed” tattoo on left peck
- Personality: Noah was charming, and comedic most of the time. He had an innocent heart and tended to never take things seriously, being the complete opposite of Brandon. As a Reed, Noah was stubborn and loved deeply. After falling for Abby, Noah couldn’t be with another girl, despite his reputation as a playboy.
- Education: Helena High School (11th Grade)
- Occupation: Sales Associate at Helena Feed & Supply (2013-2014)
- Biography: Noah was born to high school sweethearts, Liam and Makenna on November 16, 1997 in Helena, AL. Noah was a happy child, which was somewhat hindered after his mother’s tragic death when he was 8 years old; after that, Noah depended greatly on his uncle Anthony for care, as Liam was seemingly too distraught. Noah idolized his older cousin, Brandon, and the two were close as brothers. Noah, like his cousin, was a good student and excelled in English Literature, and was a proud holder of perfect attendance. While Brandon had a knack for snorting cocaine, Noah’s drug of choice was marijuana, which he believed helped him focus on his schoolwork. In Reed, Noah begins struggling with Brandon getting ready to leave for college, and ends wishing they had all left Alabama to begin with.
• Owen Greene
- Protagonist; Brandon’s adoptive cousin/”brother”
- Full Name: Edward Owen Greene
- Born on December 31, 1995 in Alabaster, Alabama
- Age: 18; 19 (as of epilogue)
- Physical Appearance: Curly brown hair and dark green eyes; his skin is a darker shade of ivory from his days under the Alabama sun. Owen stands at 5′11″ with an athletic build, similar to Brandon’s. Generally, he wears plain-coloured tees under his plaids of neutral colors like green and red; his blue jeans are typically smudged in dirt and oil from his work with cars. Owen also has a pair of scuffed lack-up boots in brown, although Liz has bought him a wardrobe rivaling that of Brandon’s.
- Personality: While quiet and sometimes irritable, Owen cares greatly about his adoptive family, and Zoey. Owen loved Zoey very much, and is the first girl he fell in love with despite being with countless other girls before her.
- Education: Early graduate from Helena High School (2014)
1st year Law student at Northwestern University (as of 2016)
- Occupation: Auto part assembler at Reed Automotive (2014) (formerly)
- Biography: Owen was born on New Year’s Eve in 1995 in Alabaster, AL, and was left on the doorstep an orphanage in Decatur a mere 6 months later, with a note to explain that they weren’t equipped to raise a child. The only parents that Owen ever knew were Anthony and Liz. For the first seven years of his life, Owen was alone; then, the 11-year-old Rose Hudson arrived. The two became fast friends, and eventually developed a strong sibling-like love for one another. When Liz and Anthony visited the orphanage, they were looking for a son, a playmate for their 11-year-old nephew, Brandon, who was still reeling from the loss of his father; instead they got a package deal of an 11-year-old Owen and a 14-year-old Rose. Moving to Helena, the two adjusted well to having a prosperous family. Owen quickly became Liz’s joy, and he loved her as if she were his blood mother. Owen and Brandon were raised together as brothers from then on, and referred to one another as such; as Owen got older, he fell into bad habits, concerning drugs, and he overdosed on heroin when he was only 15 years old, suffering a mild heart attack. In Reed, Owen is seen to have a frenemy-like relationship with adoptive cousin, Noah, which hasn’t changed from when they were younger. Owen has just graduated high school, and is unsure what to do next; although he wants nothing to do with the family business, Owen wonders if it’s his only option moving forward.
• Rose Hudson
- Protagonist; Brandon’s adoptive cousin/”sister”
- Full Name: Rosalynn “Rose” Ann Hudson
- Born on August 17, 1992 in Birmingham, Alabama
- Age: 22; 23 in Epilogue
- Marital Status: Engaged to Luke Walker
- Physical Appearance: Rose has long blonde tresses that fall below her shoulder blades, and vibrant green eyes; she has a rather voluptuous build and stands at 5′5 1/2″. Loving to shop, Rose has a wide variety of clothing, varying from chic skirts and heels to shredded jeans and boots.
- Personality: Though Rose had quit a few boyfriends in her time, she typically had a low self-esteem, despite coming off as being confident in her own skin. In addition to that, Rose is naturally responsible, filling in her “big sister” role, as well as being blunt, and always saying what’s on her mind.
- Education: Technical Honors diploma from Helena High School (2010)
Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Helena Community College (2016)
- Biography: Rose was born to Eric and Sarah Hudson in the middle of August in 1992. Her father was an elementary school teacher and died in a car accident when Rose was five; her mother was a writer and died from Leukemia three months after Rose’s 11′th birthday. Rose was sent to an orphanage in Decatur; after her mother’s death, Rose felt intense loneliness, not having any family left in the world. Then, she met fellow orphan, Owen, and the two formed a strong sibling-like bond, and were soon inseparable. As time passed, Rose constantly worried that Owen would get adopted, as she knew people didn’t come to an orphanage to adopt a teenager. Fate had an answer to that: Liz and Anthony Reed. They saw the closeness between Rose and Owen, and knew they couldn’t have one without the other. From then on, Rose had a home, with a loving mother and a doting father. In Reed, Rose sees the impending war between the Reeds and the Walkers, and tries to steer clear of it, but also wants to keep Owen safe.
• Abby Walker
- Protagonist; Liv’s cousin
- Full Name: Abigaile “Abby” Lena Walker
- Born on October 12, 1997 to Vincent and Maggie Walker in Marion, Alabama
- Age: 16/17; 18 (as of epilogue)
- Physical Appearance: Long blonde hair that falls just below her shoulder blades, and green eyes that can only be described as emeralds. Abby has warm beige-toned skin, and stands at 5′5″ with a slim, yet voluptuous build. Abby’s wardrobe could be described as “aesthetically pleasing” with happy colors, like yellows and baby blues, with her nails typically painted to match.
- Personality: Abby is an extrovert, through and through; she had a lot of friends all over the state of Alabama, but she was closest to her cousins. Abby is seen as being abrasive, crude, and at times downright mean, but also loves her family a great deal. While being a girl that was notorious for one nighters, Abby was faithful to Noah while they were together, and she did love him quite a bit.
- Education: Selma High School (11th grade)
                    Southwest High School (12th grade)
- Occupation: Waitress at Papa’s Grill (2012-2015) (formerly)
- Biography: Abby was the first born to Vincent Walker and his wife Maggie in early October of 1997. Being so close in age, Abby grew up doing everything with cousins, Liv and Luke. Even as teens, the three of them were close-knit, acting more like siblings. Abby was a wild child, drinking, smoking, and boy-crazy. As the eldest of her siblings, Abby fell into the “bossy” role, but typically neglected in helping her mother with them. In Reed, Abby is thrust into the frontlines of war because of her attraction to Noah Reed.
• Zoey Walker
- Protagonist; Liv’s sister
- Full Name: McKenzie Zoe “Zoey” Walker
- Born on December 12, 1998 to Charles and Rebecca Walker in Selma, Alabama
- Age: 15
- Death: Killed by Aaron Wheeler on November 21, 2014 (drug injection with a broken neck)
- Mental Health: Schizophrenia
- Physical Appearance: Long, dark cocoa-coloured hair that reached just below her shoulder blades and dark hazel eyes; Zoey was born with flawless ivory skin and she stood at 5′4″ with a petite build. She liked to dress to look older, wearing heels when she was only 12 years old. After she started seeing Owen, however, Zoey’s wardrobe took more of a modest turn. Unlike her sister, Zoey couldn’t stand to have her nails painted, saying it felt like her nails were melting off.
- Personality: With her disease, people call Zoey names like “crazy” or “weird”, but she actually quite normal, or as normal as a person with paranoid schizophrenia could be. Zoey was a reckless soul, and depended on her older sister for everything, from care to motherly love, as their mother had written them off. Zoey liked to party, and could be described as a “druggie”. Before her death, Zoey seemed to be taking a turn for the better, by not depending on her sister as much and getting sober.
- Education: Selma High School (10th grade)
- Occupation” Waitress/cashier at Papa’s Grill (2013-2014)
- Biography: Zoey was the second born daughter to Charles and Rebecca Walker in the dead winter of 1998. Zoey was born prematurely, at only seven months, in the master bathtub of Charles Walker’s home. Despite this, Zoey seemed perfectly healthy, and fit the role of “daddy’s little princess” perfectly. For a while, Zoey was a happy child, and idolized her big sister. At only eight years old, Zoey began showing signs of Schizophrenia: irritability and lack of focus. These symptoms only got worse as she got older. At 15, Zoey was diagnosed with paranoid Schizophrenia, and immediately put on an anti-psychotic medication. In Reed, Zoey is shown to be somewhat threatened by Brandon, and the close relationship he formed with her sister.
• Luke Walker

- Marital Status: Engaged to Rose Hudson
- Physical Appearance: Luke has dark, onyx-coloured hair and dark brown eyes, the signature Walker trademark feature. He’s tall, standing at 6′0″ with a buff build. Luke has sun-kissed skin, and is a true backwoods country boy; wholly blue jeans and tees with permanent stains on them and refuses to waste money on expensive clothing.
- Personality: Luke is mischievous, being a big prankster; he is very different from the Reed boys, and wants absolutely nothing to to with the family trade.
- Education: Selma High School (2015)
- Biography: Luke was born at the end of August to Marcus Walker and his new wife, Mary, on their honeymoon. Luke doesn’t remember his mother, as her and Marcus divorced when he was only 6 weeks old. Luke’s grandmother helped raise him before Kate came along, and Luke adored his Nana. Luke was a bit of a wild child, and managed to get cousins, Liv and Abby, into quite a bit of trouble as well. As he aged, though, Luke became more tamed; in school, Luke thrived in athletics, being the team captain of the football team. Although, Luke was rather popular, the only person he truly trusted was Liv; she was a cousin, sister, and best friend all rolled into one for him. In Reed, Luke is thrust into the family war after a tragic death that hit home with him, and he joins his cousins in fighting for a new life.
• Will Walker
- Antagonist; Brandon’s half-uncle

- Education: Selma Alabama Senior High School (1977)
                     Military, stationed in Iraq (1977-1983)
- Occupation: Drug dealer (1983-2015)
                       Walker Roofing owner (1996-2015) (cover)
- Biography: Will was born to newlyweds Dan and Olivia in Selma, AL. Will was the eldest Walker boy, yet his “father” always doted on his younger brother, Charles. One day, Will found out why: he was biologically a Reed. After Will graduated high school, he joined the military, much to his mother’s dismay; he returned home the summer of 1980 after 4 years in Iraq. During those four years, Will gained a friend in fellow solider, Robert Watson, and the two promised to stay in contact. In 1983 is when the feud undoubtley began, as Will fell in love with a girl who loved someone better than him: it was jealousy. In Reed, Will is ruthless, with the sole purpose of erasing the Reed clan from the board. He hates the Reeds, and he despises Brandon for the fact that he looks so much like, Ben, the man who took the woman he loved.
• Liam Reed
- Antagonist; Brandon’s uncle
- Full Name: Liam Joseph Reed
- Born on October 31, 1969 to Peter and Ellie Reed in Helena, Alabama
- Age: 44;45
- Death: Killed by Anthony Reed on November 26, 2014 in Helena, Alabama (slit throat)
- Marital Status: Widower (Makenna Reed)
- Physical Appearance: Liam had silky dark brown hair and even darker brown eyes, coming off as mysteriously handsome; he was Caucasian, and his face was typically always clean shaven. Liam stood at 6′4″, being the tallest of the Reed brothers. Liam dressed rather sophisticated, in button-downs, pressed pants, and sleek shoes.
- Personality: Liam was exceptionally charming, and a very good liar, making people believe he was who they wanted him to be.
- Education: West Alabama High School (1988)
                     Duke University(dropped out in 1991)
- Occupation: Drug dealer (2004-2014)
                        Salesman (1992-2004)
- Biography: Liam was the last child born to Peter and Ellie Reed, and was a surprise on the Halloween on 1969, to say the least; Ellie had no idea she was pregnant when she started having intense cramps. Low and behold, Liam was born four months prematurely, and barely held onto life for the first 6 months, having to live in an incubator. After that, Liam grew up to relatively healthy, although a bit of an outcast; he wasn’t as smart or athletically gifted like his brothers were, but did have quite a talent for the opposite sex. Liam was a playboy in high school, and all the girls wanted him. When Liam was 17, he fell for the smart and popular Makenna Charleston. Makenna, only 15, couldn’t believe that the cutest guy in school was attracted to her. Liam felt differently about Makenna, and believed he could be with her for the long run. Liam and Makenna married on February 19, 1996 in Helena after Makenna got her Graduate’s degree in graphic design. They had their son, Noah, a year later, and all seemed good and well. Only it wasn’t. Makenna’s older sister had died when Makenna was seven months pregnant with Noah, and she had a hard time coping; Liam , being his classic, playboy self, sought out stress relief in a woman that wasn’t his wife. In September of 1997, Liam had sex with Rebecca Walker, a lonely housewife who was in Helena begging for a job. Liam was guilt ridden afterwards, and got Rebecca a nursing position at Helena Medic for her silence. The guilt didn’t last long, however, as Liam sought Rebecca out again in 2004, and two had an affair until 2007 when they were caught by Liam’s older brother, Anthony. Makenna was never the wiser to her husband’s infidelity, and threw everything she was into raising her son. Tragically, in 2008, Makenna was killed in a car accident, leaving Liam to care for Noah. Liam had no clue how to care for a child, as he really didn’t want one in the first place. Liam grieved for Makenna for about 2 months, then started his affair with Rebecca back up. What first started as casual sex, turned into legitimate feelings from Liam. In late September of 2008, Will Walker caught them in the act of adultery, and Liam was sabotaged into doing something that would benefit the both of them: kill Charles. In Reed, Liam starts off as the last suspect to be Charles’ murderer, and is soon caught as being prime suspect #1.
• Robert Watson
- Antagonist; Selma Sheriff
- Full Name: Robert Paul Watson
- Nickname: Rob (by Will)
- Born on April 6, 1958 in Daytona Beach, Florida
- Age: 56
- Marital Status: Divorced (Debra Garcia)
- Physical Appearance: Robert is what most would describe as “ruggedly handsome”, with dark brown hair, brown eyes and a a russet complexion; he stands at 5′10″ with a buff stature. He starts off in the novel with a clean shaven face, which had turned into a greying beard by the end.
- Personality: A man snarky words and and harsh actions, Robert was the ying to Will’s yang; both were evil in their own way, with close to no redeeming qualities. Robert had an obsession with power, and wouldn’t be satisfied until he had it all.
- Education: Seabreeze High School (dropped out in 1975)
                    Military, station in Iraq (1975-1984)
                    Miami Beach Police Station (1985)
- Occupation: Sheriff for the Selma PD (1991-present)
Cop for the Miami PD (1985-1991) (formerly)
- Biography: Robert grew up in Daytona Beach with a drunk as a father and a prostitute for a mother; he dropped out of school when he was 17 and enlisted in the army. Robert saw it as the only way to get away from his toxic homelife. In 1977, after a year of being stationed in Iraq, Robert meets new recruit Will Walker, and takes him under his wing; the two became quick friends and bonded over recreational drugs; marijuana, mostly. Robert liked Will, liked that he was headstrong. In 1983, the two men went their separate ways; Robert stayed with the army while Will went home to his mother, whom he spoke of missing, in Alabama. In 1984, Robert, now 26 years old, is released from his duties, and returns to Florida. In Miami, he enters a police academy, knowing he wanted something where he could exercise his military training and his need for control. While in Miami, Robert met a beautiful Cuban-American woman named Debra, and he married her a mere 8 months later. Six years passed; they had a 3-year-old son named Paul, Debra was a happy stay-at-home mom, and Robert was well on his way to becoming a Sheriff. In 1988, two days before their 4th wedding anniversary, Robert cheated on Debra with a 16-year-old girl that was brought into the station for petty theft. Rebecca Tate. They started an affair that lasted three years, and towards the end of it, Robert realized he had fallen in love with Rebecca. Debra found out about the affair in 1991 after finding lipstick stains on her husband’s uniform; she demanded he end the affair, or she was taking Paul and their unborn child. That’s when Robert found out Debra was pregnant again. Robert made his choice then, and asked Rebecca to marry him; he was beyond angry when she said no, stating she didn’t want to break up a marriage. In reality, Rebecca didn’t love him the way he loved her. Shortly after that, Robert moved his family away, to a small town in Alabama and tried to start fresh; things went smoothly. Robert reconnected with old war pal, Will, after over a decade, and Robert got on as the new Sheriff of Selma; the ultimate enforcer. However great life was going, though, Robert was stuck in a loveless marriage. A marriage that didn’t last long after moving to Selma; Debra had a miscarriage and the two were divorced by 1995. The two shared custody of Paul, but once he turned 18, he never went to see his mother again. In early June of 1996, Robert found Rebecca again, only this time she was 7 1/2 months pregnant; that didn’t keep them from a quick rendezvous, however. The night before her wedding to Charles Walker, the two had sex again, then went their separate ways as Rebecca wanted to try and be a faithful wife. In Reed, Robert is seen as Will’s right-hand, doing all his bidding and terrorizing anyone Will wanted him to, with the hopes that Will would let him in on the profits of the family business.
