The beginning of everything

One day this summer, the inclination to make perfume suddenly took root in me.

"Indolic", "chypre", "oriental", "calone", "aldehydic"... The more I read about perfume, the more I realized I had absolutely no clue what these words meant, much less what they were supposed to smell like.

That's when it struck me. Maybe I need to start learning about the different scents that compose perfume. Since I learn best by doing, maybe there's a lesson somewhere that will teach me how to make perfume...

So, I made my first perfume ever in a one-day trial lesson.

It is a composition that evokes the scent of my grandfather's house - the wooden floors, the strong fragrance of Chinese hualushui in the air, the smell of shelves upon shelves of old books. It is in this house that I curl up in a wicker chair, reading an old Plato book in front of an open window. You can feel the warm sunshine, the faintest smell of the green garden outside.

Obnoxious naming, perhaps, but I named my first creation Sunday with Plato.

Formula (in cc):

Citrus 0.4 -- to bring in some lightness and green

Lilac 1.2 -- evokes nostalgia, open space; a relaxing scent

Violet Orris 0.3

Rose 0.05 -- for some human warmth

Muguet 0.2

Chypre Base 1.5 -- the mossy main note; an accord built on bergamot, oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum

Woody Base 0.4 -- evoking the smell of old books

Musk Base 0.1 -- to smoothen transitions between notes
