Magia Record just released new witch forms in the latest Factor of Despair event and I'd like to go through them and give my thoughts!

Do be aware that these are just my opinions :3 (also don't expect an in depth analysis this is just me gushing incoherently over designs)

Starting with Obariyon, Tsumugi Wakana's witch.

I'd like to start this by saying that this might be one of my favorites of the bunch. They're all really good, but something about this one just really pleases me. When I first saw it my first thought was "witch" and I know that's silly because obviously it is a witch, but the design really encapsulates the witch designs in the series, at least to me. What I'm trying to say is that it fits. It's beastly, it's bizarre, and it has a theme*.

I wasn't exactly sure how a vacuum witch was going to look but they pleasantly surprised me with this one. I especially like how they turned her into a bear, I find that very neat.

*Note that this is a crude list of what witches are. I'm sorry for the shallow, dumbed-down tldr of a witch but I really liked this design and couldn't find the right words to explain why, plus my brain is running on fumes. I hope the paragraph made a little bit of sense to at least someone reading ^^;

Carmela, Manaka Kurumi's witch.

What I like about this is how they continued to play into the jellyfish idea. When looking back at the doppel form, it gives me the idea of the jellyfish life cycle: going through the ephyra stage and transforming into the medusa stage, where the tentacles grow longer. It also eludes to an octopus with its many arms all multitasking, but the jellyfish idea still works, and is probably better.

Jellyfish have two kinds of tentacles: the stingers to paralyze the prey, and the oral arms to bring food into its mouth. Carmela has these two arm types as shown above: the ones with the burners and the ones that hold the cooking equipment—the dangerous arms that could harm anyone if they got too close, and the arms to serve food.

It also appears that Carmela lost her chairs that once stood on her face, only to be replaced by some kind of mass. I'm not sure what it could be, but I think it could either be fuel or the mysterious meat that she serves to guests.

Hevelius, Mifuyu Azusa's witch.

I'll be honest and say I didn't know what to think of this witch form at first. I'm not exactly a huge fan of the witch designs that are more on the humanoid side; however, this design does make sense for the bird-catcher theme.

A bird-catcher isn't just an object like a cage (which was what I originally thought of when hearing the term), but also a person who catches birds, and as we know, Mifuyu's doppel's description is a reference to the bird-catcher character from the novel Night on the Galactic Railroad.

When I remembered that detail, I came to appreciate the witch form much more.

Pennen Nenemu, Nemu Hiiragi's witch.

I originally didn't like this witch form because I thought it broke the whole bird-theming shared between Iroha, Touka, and Nemu's doppels (the loss of the red beak the doppel had). The only thing it has left that could tie into birds are the tail feathers and cape but that seems about it.

Still, I don't hate this design and I in fact still like it in its own way. I know I said that I wasn't a fan of the more humanoid witches, but that's not to say I outright hate them. Besides, the more I look at the picture the more I come to admire it.

Pennen Nolde, Touka Satomi's witch.

Something I liked in Pennen Nolde's doppel design was how the matchsticks were attached to its hanger, but here it seems more like she carries them around in her little basket. Another thing that's different is the clothes. The more elegant, frilly cloak/dress the doppel had is now more modest and meek, which does tie into the character that the doppel/witch references: the poor girl selling matches in Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince.

Still, in my personal opinion, I feel like they could've done more with this design while still maintaining the ties to the girl from the story. I feel like they should've kept the matches attached to the hanger (which in turn would still be coming out her back) as that would've made her seem more intimidating, kind of like a peacock. But then again, Charlotte wasn't intimidating and she was still dangerous and kicked ass.

Overall it's solid.

Finally, Old Dorothy, Alina Gray's witch.

Obviously we weren't going to get a bunch of paint splatters as those weren't the doppel's true form and was instead the cute little paint tube that sprouted from Alina's back. I was most excited about this one as Alina's one of my favorites and I have to say I wasn't disappointed.

I adore the gas mask as it plays into the toxicity and virus-like quality of the paint she produces. The little blue lines on the face also play into that theme as it appears she's sick as well, putting her in a perpetual state of dismay. Perhaps she looks like that because Alina herself is disgusted that she got a cute witch form as opposed to a nightmare creature.

Unfortunately I don't have much to say other than I like it and would love to see how Old Dorothy fights in battle

Finally, we're done. Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions of these designs if you'd like.

Could you do a quirk based on the power of manifestation/realization possessed by Nemu Hiiragi and her dopple Pennen Nenemu?

Yeah, hard no. There is no way you could make a power about making the written word into reality a power. This is such an insane power in any setting, let alone a relatively low power world like MHA. There is nothing about her power or any application of it that could be watered down into a Quirk. The only way you could translate it into a power is if the effect was entirely illusion based, like with "Headspace" or "Delusion" to manifest stories the user likes or has made. Otherwise, I would suggest going with another idea.

You're right, Nemu's doppel is a warbler! I took the word used too literally, since warblers are called simply "bug-eaters" in Japanese. It’s interesting that its form is a deathwatch beetle instead, though. Perhaps because it’s a ‘self-eating’ being? It cuts down Nemu’s lifespan (see Touka’s doppel description) and in doing so grows stronger. But Nemu and her doppel are one and the same (she even calls herself its counterpart when summoning it during battle), so it grows by weakening itself 1/2

(2/2) Deathwatch beetles also eat books, like in Nemu’s magia, so that’s another connection. And both them and silkworms only take on their adult forms during spring. Might be a coincidence, many species become more active in spring, but it reminds me of how turning Eve into a full witch is generally referred to as “hatching” her…Oh, and the eastern crowned warbler (first thing that shows up if you look up warbler in Japanese) does seem to be a migrating bird that comes to Japan in the warmer months

I don’t have much to add here, and I haven’t looked into Pennen Nenemu too much, but this is definitely some interesting stuff.

Your impression that Pennen Nenemu sort of perpetuates a self-eating cycle because it’s both a warbler (a bug-eating species) and a deathwatch beetle is a really good point. I’d have to double-check to be sure, but I feel like in the Main Story Nemu pushes herself hard for the goal of the Magius. Using her magic cuts at her lifespan every time and yet she keeps at it. It’s very fitting that her Doppel grows stronger through her weakness, then: it’s a physical representation of how her work is eating her alive, so to speak.

On the note of Pennen Nenemu being a deathwatch beetle, I did some quick research and found that the beetle was named for the vigil one takes near the dying or dead. The beetles have been (often mistakenly) interpreted as a sign of impending doom, especially in works of literature.

What this reminds me of in particular is Nemu’s Magical Girl Side Story, in which her primary struggle is feeling as though she is being forgotten by her family. Her visits by her mother and younger brother are unfulfilling and disjointed. Even in her personal memoria’s description, she admits that she “just wants to be told [she’s] loved”. Yet she’s ill, and she has to sit and watch as her loved ones fade away from her life. It’s sort of a vigil for the dying in its own way, albeit more emotional than physical. The connection between her and her family is clearly slipping by the second, and neither party can think of anything to do but watch it happen.

It could be a stretch, but I always like finding ways to tie little details to character traits like this. That’s just my take, though!

Finally done with episode level grinding! And add another doppel to the list!

Found some scans of Magia Archive Volume 2, a book that alongside it’s first volume, reveals concept art and information about Meguca’s in the Magia Record game. So I decided to translate the Doppel comments on Ui’s, Touka’s and Nemu’s pages. Interestingly, the reason as to why Pennen Nolde and Pennen Nenemu look similar to Giovanna is revealed;

“A sacrificial figure shackled to a Greek-style pillar. When the hardships received exceed limit, the power reverses to happiness”

“The motif is a plague doctor, a Swallow and a match-selling girl. As a result of three people contracting to save Iroha, their Doppels have a similar appearance to Iroha's, the target of rescue.”

“The motif is a scholar and a Warbler. The clock pendulum within its head ticks away. Iroha, Touka and Nemu have Doppels of a similar shape so as to surround the lost Ui.”

Old Dorothy is another im worried about. If it only takes from the nightmare-esque part ill be disappointed. Its not a good doppel to me so you'd have to really fuck up to make it worse

WITCH THOUGHTS LET'S GOOOOO!

THEY IMPROVED CARMELA THANK FUCK! They did it for me..! ^v^ She is WAY more coordinated and the colours are sooo nice! The frilly skirt bit is soooo cute! I love how she kinda looks like an octopus or some kind of sea creature. Not sure how well that links with Manaka but eh. I don't think there's much I dislike here. Perhaps the knife rack thing is a little out of place? Not sure. Now as the witch from the doppel hmmmm it seems like the circular bit is completely lost... for link-age, that's not great but getting rid of it to make the design better, i am wholeheartedly down for. She is a big win for me!

Obariyon. I'm hmmmmm not sure. I don't hate it. Why does its head look like a bear? Is it cause like... Obeariyon..? I just don't know if this would be what I'd imagine the full witch to be... The doppel makes me think more of an insect or something whereas this is going for a mammal it seems. It's good but I'm on the fence whether I personally like it.

From the silhouette from the trailer I was super worried about Hevelius but I think I like her? I think her shape is interesting and as stupid as the head is, I think it's fun. But I do have gripes. I'm a bit bothered that the white fabric bit that was so focal before is just completely gone and the head piece and veil is completely removed, like c'mon, that could've been super pretty on her head. And I'm not sure about the coral-looking uhhh thing. And I hate those legs why do they look unfinished? As I rack up the complaints maybe I don't like it..? Hm... I feel like I could improve it using that shape base though. She's fine.

Also... THE HEAD LOOKS LIKE THAT MANNEQUIN HEAD FROM RUPAUL'S DRAG RACE BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER ITS NAME

Now we're getting onto the ones I super like again wheeee! I think Pennen Nolde is so fun, the little matchstick girl theme is ace! I'm sad some super cool aspects of the doppel are gone though... I loved the matchstick thing and the lace and hanging diamonds but eh, maybe they just didn't fit. She's good and I can see it working the other way if the doppel came second. Although the legs are simple, I think the doll legs work and aren't bland like Hevelius'

Pennen Nemenu, ough, I think she's beautiful! I think she takes from the doppel super well! I miss the weird teapot head but I think the head they chose is also cool. Maybe add the tassels onto the end of the hat thing? I love how the main body is utilised into her bloomers (one thing I was sad was missed about Nolde) and she's super cute. My only gripe is her body shape, she is a child she does not need a stick thin waist and boobs, thank you

Now I did notice that these last 3 doppels share a similar body shape and I get that for important, linked characters. I don't think it's a bad thing cause they're all unique enough on their own.

And back to disappointed. My fears came true, I did not want her witch to just be the Nightmare-esque part... sigh... it doesn't even take from it well... no ears? Hair completely wrong colour, face completely different, stripes going wrong way. Like, I get it. Gas mask for poisons, bandage on head for uhh illness (i dont know enough about Alina but she was in the hospital right?) but it's not her doppel. Disappointing.

These are for Christmas Pennen Nolde and Pennen Nenemu (Touka and Nemu), Miko Giovanna (Iroha, dont ask where Shitori Egumo is, I dont know), Swimsuit Dum and Dee (Tsukuyo and Tsukasa), Swimsuit Zola and Cendrillon (Kaede and Rena) and finally Christmas Beatrice and Yu Hong (Felicia and Tsuruno)

I had fun with these and I think they all came out wondefully! No changes needed (for once lol)

Fun fact

My three Villains, Fylass, Cosmounse and Niru are based on three different stories

Fylass - The Little Matchstick Girl

The story revolves around a poor girl forced to sell matches on the cold night before New's Years. As she strikes matches to warm herself up, she sees a wonderful, warm dinner and her kindly dead grandmother, but they vanish as soon as the match burns out. Trying to stop her grandmother from leaving her, she burns an entire bundle at once. In the end, the girl freezes to death and is taken to Heaven by her grandmother.

Niru - The Happy Prince

The Happy Prince follows the story of a statue of a prince who has never felt sorrow, until seeing the state of some of the inhabitants in the City he inhabits. The Happy Prince commanded a Swallow Bird (who'd be Kirby in this case), to take three jewels of his body to send them to unfortunate individuals so they could sell them and get money to live.

A Match seller who ruined all her matches by accident (Fylass)

A Writer too hungry to write (Dedede)

A Mother and a sick child (Meta and Bandee)

Afterwards, the statue wasn't as beautiful as before, so after the passing of the Swallow, the civilians destroyed the statue to remake it in name of the Mayor (Cosmounse)

What remained of the Statue and the Swallow were taken by God to send them to Heaven's city of gold.

Cosmounse - The Biography of Pennen Nenemu/Night on the Galactic Railroad

The story follows a ghost that after some unfortunate actions, he ends up getting an absurd amount of power, making him the leader of the Ghost Town - after using his authority in irresponsible ways though, the people rebelled and stripped him of his power, so he was, yet again, just a lowly ghost.

The other story is based on the Bird catcher who steals various birds and sells them as sweets, paralleling what Cosmounse did to Meta and the heroes of yore

Doppel Number Fourteen AND Fifteen: The Disaster Duo’s Double Doppel Post

That alliteration was horrible, but okay.

Anyways, to alleviate the disappointment that I didn’t unlock Sana and Iroha’s Doppels simultaneously, I did the only logical option - unlocking both Touka’s and Nemu’s simultaneously. What do you mean, I have an obsession? This is a perfectly normal and understandable game mechanic!

Let’s go through each one by one:

First we have Pennen Nolde, Touka’s Doppel! I love how it’s wearing her dress. Also, it kinda looks like the matches on its back resemble the wing-shaped symbol of the Wings of the Magius, so that’s pretty cool.

I heard briefly that this Doppel was based on the Little Match Girl (which is something I’d have to research later) and I can certainly see the inspiration here.

I should also note that while I usually go into a separate quest with perhaps a Madoka and Rena in tow to get the screenshots for these Doppels, Touka was very impatient and actually charged hers in the middle of Nemu’s Doppel Quest. The two of them really are inseparable, huh?

Then we have Nemu’s Doppel, Pennen Nenemu! I gotta say, if anything, Pennen Nenemu has to have my favorite name just because of the pun.

I definitely love the style of Pennen Nenemu’s appearance a lot more than Pennen Nolde’s, but in terms of the attack itself, I think I actually prefer Nemu’s Magia. The Doppel attack isn’t bad of course but I feel like an ability to materialize stories with your own lifespan could have more possibilities than just slamming a book on them (though it is a good finisher).

Something I find very interesting is that Iroha, Touka, and Nemu have their Doppels originating from the same place (their hair), but Ui doesn’t. You’d think they’d all have that connection, but nope, I guess not. It’s definitely something I’d look into at a later date, but regardless, it’s a cool detail.

I have absolutely no idea whose Doppel I’ll go for next but honestly all I’ve gained from this experience is wishing that the girls who clearly won’t get Mitama’s Training would get a similar story-based conversation with their Doppels. We need more of those, dang it...They’re so interesting.
