Phare d’Eckmühl, Bretagne, France Original photograph by Herbert A. Franke in Architecture https://1x.com/photo/1783172 The Phare d'Eckmühl is a lighthouse on the Pointe de Saint-Pierre in Penmarc'h in the French department of Finistère. Inaugurated on October 17, 1897, Phare d'Eckmühl is one of Europe's tallest lighthouses, 60 meters high. The tower secures one of the most dangerous coasts of France due to many rocks.

MWW Artwork of the Day (4/13/23) Lucien Simon (French, 1861-1945) Procession at Penmarc'h (1900) Oil on canvas, 136 x 175.5 cm. Musée d'Orsay, Paris
Passionate and melancholic, Brittany became the region of choice for a group of artists nicknamed the "Bande Noire" (The Black Group). Charles Cottet and Lucien Simon in particular, moved by the extreme contrasts of this region, used dark tones to express the harsh life of the sailors and the faith that sustained them. "Through his extraordinary insight, the artist clearly renders not only a distinctive portrait, but also the hidden feelings of each individual character, making The Procession one of the most magnificent works in our Modernist canon, [...]. The work goes far beyond a straightforward account of an event: it reveals the enduring religious feeling of a people with a long tradition of belief and respect for ancient laws and traditions; the devout figures of the women, the solemn sincerity of the fishermen, the majestic figure of the smiling, contented priest, [...], all affirm the unquestionable authority of the priesthood over the Breton people" (L. Genevray, "Painters of Modern Life," 1912).

Léopold Pernes (1912-1980) - Les ramasseurs de goémon à Penmarc'h
Oil on canvas. 19.7 x 39.4 inches, 50 x 100 cm.
Estimate: €600-800.
Sold Thierry-Lannon, Brest, France, 20 July 2024 for €2,300 + B.P.
Penmarch is located on the coast of Brittany. I believe Penmarc'h is the Breton spelling. You can see l'Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Joie in the background.
You may have noticed that I have a thing for the depictions of seaweed gatherers. Up until the 1950s, thousands of wagonloads of seaweed were gathered on the French coast each year to extract the potassium within for use in the glass and soap industries and for the manufacture of gunpowder.

LE SUD DE LA BRETAGNE DANS LA TOURMENTE DE CIARÁN - 02/11/2023 - 11 H 18 UTC
Tumblr media

Bay of Biscay, Castro Urdiales (No. 1)
The Bay of Biscay, known in Spain as the Gulf of Biscay (Spanish: Golfo de Vizcaya; Basque: Bizkaiko Golkoa), and in France and some border regions as the Gulf of Gascony (French: Golfe de Gascogne; Occitan: Golf de Gasconha; Breton: Pleg-mor Gwaskogn), is a gulf of the northeast Atlantic Ocean located south of the Celtic Sea. It lies along the western coast of France from Point Penmarc'h to the Spanish border, and the northern coast of Spain west to Cape Ortegal. The south area of the Bay of Biscay that washes over the northern coast of Spain is known locally as the Cantabrian Sea.
The average depth is 1,744 m (5,722 ft) and the greatest depth is 4,735 m (15,535 ft).
The Bay of Biscay is named (for English speakers) after Biscay on the northern Spanish coast, probably standing for the western Basque districts (Biscay up to the early 19th century).
