we need a new creative meme like this again
Despite being in the middle of an undercover mission, the Penguins of Madagascar still pulled off Operation: #ALSIceBucketChallenge! They now challenge the Minions, Emmet from The LEGO Movie, and Sid from Ice Age Movie.

Theme 10 Alternate Universe - What if
ok what i want to write today would fit better with the "what if" theme but it didn't win so let it be
DreamWorks Animation Television shows can be divided into two periods
the first which i call the Nickelodeon period
it consists of three shows The Penguins of Madagascar Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness Monsters vs. Aliens
The above shows are characterized by being episodic, having self-contained stories with no ongoing plot line and character development, you can literally watch the episodes in almost any order you want
The second period I call the Netflix period
This includes shows like these Dinotrux Trollhunters Fast & Furious Spy Racers Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous
These shows are characterized by being very serialized stories, having ongoing plot lines going from the first episode to the last and ongoing character development
There is one show from the Netflix period called The Adventures of Puss in Boots
This show is quite interesting because its first season was released on January 16, 2015 (technically it was released in three parts of 5 episodes each throughout 2015)
and was very episodic with no ongoing plot and self-contained episodes
The second season was released in December 11, 2015 and the show changed from episodic to serialized with an ongoing storyline until the final episode
the above show represents a transitional moment between the two periods
when Mitch Watson originally pitched AHKJ to DreamWorks Animation Television he wanted a more serialized show which he described as a game of thrones with lemurs, but the exes at DreamWorks Animation Television, while they liked the idea of a King Julien show, had him change it to a more episodic show
and while we got a taste of a more serialized AHKJ in the form of Exiled, the writing team proved they could do a serialized story in the show they did after AHKJ called Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny
you've probably read this far and are wondering what this has to do with "what if"
you see All Hail King Julien was released on December 19, 2014
if Mitch Watson had waited a few more months to pitch AHKJ to DreamWorks Animation Television they might have been more receptive to his original plan and not had him turn it into an episodic show like we got instead
imagine a serialized AHKJ with an ongoing plot lines and character development
just imagine what could have been

Wow, I'm so normal about this movie! *develops a DreamWorks conspiracy theory on why Me and My Shadow got cancelled*
DreamWorks and franchises: a "conspiracy theory" on why "Me and My Shadow" got cancelled
Tumblr media
On December 10th 2010 the project for an animated movie called "Me and My Shadow" was announced by DreamWorks. The story is about a timid and boring man called Daniel Grubb and his shadow "Shadow Dan" trying to convince him to live a more exciting life. The animation style follows an idea similar to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", except that instead of blending 2D animation and live-action it would have worked with both 2D and 3D animation, with 2D for the shadow characters and their world and 3D for the real people. Despite being half-way done, the release date of this project kept being pushed back, first from 2013 to 2014, until it entered a state of limbo and eventually got cancelled. This decision was taken mostly due to the failure in 2014 of "Mr. Peabody and Sherman", which brought to the cancellation of other projects as well.
Personally, I have been upset about this cancellation ever since I found out about this movie, mostly because I just know that if it had come out this would have been one of my favorite movies ever. A few days ago DreamWorks released a trailer for their next movie, "Megamind 2", a very cheap-looking sequel to "Megamind" set to release on March 1st 2024 on Peacock. While I was washing the dishes (lol), I thought about this trailer for a moment and had a sudden "conspiracy theory" coming up on why "Me and My Shadow" was one of the movies got cancelled after 2014: In the same trailer of "Megamind 2" they announce a new serie which will come out based on it, meaning that this movie is basically an advertisement or a pilot for the show. This is reinforced by the cheap animation commonly used in these spin-off shows.
This serie announcement made me realize something: DreamWorks has made A LOT of shows, shorts and sequels based on their movies. In other words, this studio loves creating franchises. And even though this is a common marketing choice for many studios, I feel like DreamWorks does this VERY often. Some examples are: -"Shrek", with 3 sequels (might become 4), 8 shorts, 3 TV specials, and 2 spin-off movies and 1 serie based on Puss in Boots -"Kung Fu Panda", with 2 (soon 3) sequels, 3 series and 5 shorts -"How to train your Dragon", with 2 sequels, 3 series and 6 shorts -"Madagascar", with 3 sequels, 3 series, 3 shorts and a spin-off movie based on The Penguins of Madagascar -"Trolls", with 2 sequels, 2 series, 6 shorts and 2 TV specials -"The Croods", with 1 sequel and 2 series -"Monsters vs Aliens", with 1 serie, 2 shorts and 1 TV special -"Captain Underpants", with 1 serie and a possible spin-off movie -"Mr. Peabody and Sherman", with 1 serie As you can see, both known and less known movies ended up having at least 1 serie, turning them into franchises. It's actually rarer to find movies by DreamWorks that were not turned into franchises. So I'd say it's clear that DreamWorks has quite some interest in this marketing choice.
Even their newer movie "Orion and the Dark", released on Netflix on February 2nd 2024, can work as a DreamWorks franchise. You can understand this by the presence of a TEAM of secondary characters: they can't be fully developed in a movie, but they are an interesting team that can be developed in a show. It's the same concept as the Furious Five from "Kung Fu Panda", or as the Penguins of Madagascar and King Julien from "Madagascar": a team of secondary characters the movie can't focus on, but that you wouldn't mind seeing again. And now, with the release of a show based on "Megamind 2", a new team of villains is introduced in the sequel. Villains that are very likely going to be secondary characters that could be developed more in a show. See the pattern? I believe that DreamWorks follows this as their standard for a franchise: the movie must have a team of secondary characters.
Now, let's look back at "Me and My Shadow" and let's focus on the characters. From what we know, there were going to be 4 relevant characters: -Daniel Grubb (who some of you might also know as Stanley) -Shadow Dan (also known as Shadow Stan) -Heidi (Daniel's love interest) -The Shadow Villain (the bad guy, obviously) Every other character that was seen in small Behind-The-Scenes works doesn't seem to have much relevance. There are secondary characters, but they don't seem to be connected as a team, unlike many other secondary characters from Dreamworks.
Now, here's the "conspiracy theory": I believe one of the reasons "Me and My Shadow" was cancelled is that it could not be adapted as a DreamWorks franchise. The story would have been concluded in the movie, the characters didn't need to be developed more, and none of the secondary cast could work as a team. Could they have made some shorts based on it? Probably yes, but a short is not a serie. DreamWorks seems to have more interest in shows than shorts (remember: most franchises have at least a SHOW, not a short!).
With that being said, I'd like to end this post by doing some advertisement for this movie, even if it never got a chance to be finished. Everytime I find a new clip I am filled with pure joy. "Me and My Shadow" deserves to be made. -Shout-out to SQUIDWORD15 on YouTube for finding mANY unfinished clips. Bless this fella

Shred Force OC because I love the pilot and I wish it got greenlit. I'm also going to ramble about some random lore ideas I have.
So her name is Rosia Twiggy, she's a violin alien robot akin to Nordic Bunny and their both dating (Villainous Rivals to Lovers)
So, some lore ideas I had for Shred Force was that "Were their other music gods as well?" So for Rosia, I'd say she was associated with the Orchestra Gods (essentially the Rock Gods before the Rock Gods) but turned on them later on when they decided to give up their mantle as the main music gods. Since Rosia is also Nordic's counterpart, she also has lobster minions.
For Rosia's personality, she's essentially a evil version of Classified from Penguins of Madagascar (2014). She's a arrogant smug villain who wants to conquer Earth for her own personal reasons. She's a calm and collected conquer who is sophisticated as possible, but does have a short fuse when properly provoked.
Trivia time
Despite her ego and what she wants to believe, she can be a big goofball like Nordic sometimes. (Quite literally doesn't know the difference between crabs and lobsters, can't pronounce vintage, can be just as hammy as him, and tends to give overly dramatic and dumb speeches about how the Orchestra Gods were the best.)
Is British
She can extend her arms to a certain degree.
Get extremely pissed off if someone calls her Twiggy even though it's her last name
Is very fond of insulting others she thinks are beneath her
Likes classical music and hates punk music
Nordic Bunny x Rosia Twiggy ship names are these: Norsia, RockViolin, and ClassicalRock
That's all, I wish this pilot got greenlit, it looked and was amazing

"Madagascar" franchise retrospective
On this day, "Madagascar" was released in theaters. I don't know if I told you this story, but I've seen every single "Madagascar" movie in theaters on their respective opening days.
"Madagascar" (May 27, 2005) = Saw in regular theaters
"Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa" (AKA, "Madagascar 2: Escape Africa") (November 7, 2008 = My 13th birthday) = Saw in theaters in the IMAX format
"Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" (June 8, 2012) = Saw in theaters in the 3D format
"The Penguins of Madagascar (2014 film)" (November 26, 2014) = Saw in theaters in the 3D format
Now, the talks of "Madagascar 4" has been up and down as of lately. I mean, while it was cancelled due to the poor box office performance of "The Penguins of Madagascar (2014 film)" (despite making back its budget), DreamWorks had to close down PDI. Despite this, I wouldn't mind if a fourth movie happens. Either way, the third movie to me will always be the definitive ending of the franchise.

You know, I believe 20th Century Studios/FOX could have acquired DreamWorks instead of NBCUniversal or maybe those movies could have been on Disney+ if 20th had still owned the rights to those DW movies (no losses).

Would you be willing to tell us what you liked and/or disliked the most about the books you've read in April? What got you into them, why you stuck around?
-🌹
yes I'd love to!! I love love love talking about the books I'm reading
so while the graphic I posted only shows the titles of 3 books I read, I read 4 total books in april. one of them I'd started in march and finished on april 1st (Human Acts by Han Kang) so it only 'kind of' counts for april but I'll answer for it anyway. so going in order of what I read:
(I yapped a lot like usual so I'm putting this under a read more)
Human Acts by Han Kang (I gave this 5 stars)
this is probably the best book I've read so far in 2025. I read The Vegetarian by Han Kang back in March and while I enjoyed the metaphors at hand, it was a bit too surrealist for my taste? idk I need to try to get more into surrealist 'weird' fiction I think. but Human Acts wasn't like that at all. Human Acts is a historical fiction novel that deals with the Gwangju Uprising in South Korea that happened in 1980. I never knew much about the Gwangju Uprising or the wave of fascism SK dealt with in this time period in general so it was both fascinating and horrifying to learn about the violent oppression people dealt with. the story goes between several POVs of people who were connected to the uprising in various ways and it's just such a raw and brutal look at the suffering this government caused, and also how, even though things are better now, the fight against fascism isn't over. the writing is just really raw and human and I wish this novel of Kang's got more attention because it was truly such an incredible read.
Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner (4 stars)
way back when I was in uni for my creative writing minor I took a few classes on nonfiction writing, and in one class we had to read a lot of personal memoir essays. one essay we read was Crying In H-Mart, back when it was just a solo published essay, and it was heartbreaking and beautifully written and I just loved it. I've really only listened to a single song by Japanese Breakfast so it's not like I was a huge fan of hers, but her writing was incredible. so when I heard she expanded that essay into a full memoir I knew I wanted to read it. the way Zauner intertwines talking about her complicated relationship with her mother, her struggle to find her cultural identity, and the connection she's always had with her family through food was just really fascinating to read about. also the book just made me really want to hug my mom.
Normal People by Sally Rooney (4.25 stars)
this was my first venture into reading Sally Rooney and I really loved it. normal people is an in depth look at how messy and imperfect human connection can be but sometimes you find someone you just click with and you'll never be able to get out of their orbit. more than anything my favorite part of this book was Rooney's writing style. there's just something so addictive about the way she writes people and relationships. I can't wait to read more from her.
The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green (3.75 stars)
disclaimer: I haven't read a John Green book since 2014. as a young teen I, like many others in my age group, loved TFIOS and Paper Towns and Looking for Alaska because I always got the impression that John Green respected the intelligence of his teenage audience more than a lot of other YA authors did. now I've been trying to get into reading nonfiction so when I heard John Green had shifted towards it I was a bit interested, but really I just stumbled across this book at my library and impulsively decided why not check it out? TAR was written during quarantine in 2020 and the novel makes no effort to hide that. the book is styled as 'reviews' of different aspects of human life, like sunsets, our sense of wonder, the penguins of madagascar, piggly wiggly—and while a few of these individual essays really hit, a few of them were a bit mid for me. but I really liked some of the insights John Green had in a few of them and saved a lot of individual lines from this book. I read it because I needed to read something hopeful about humanity and our future and this definitely gave me a renewed sense of hope about some things.
to sign this off I'll throw in one life from TAR that really struck me
"We all know how loving ends. But I want to fall in love with the world anyway, to let it crack me open. I want to feel what there is to feel while I am here."
