it has been so rainy and gray but we’re solidly into spring here in maine and i felt a phantom whiff of l’ombre dans l’eau.. l’ombre was one of my first big perfume purchases. i smelled it in the barney’s in boston, i applied it to my skin and went about my day. there was a moment i was waiting at the crosswalk and the sun was beaming down and everyone was walking around as if the sun was putting physical weight on them.. sweating, slouched, melting and angry looking.. then l’ombre wafted up from my arm and i was taken back to childhood! summers with my mother growing tomatoes! the bright green cassis leaf triggered that tomato leaf scent memory .. it was transporting me in a way no fragrance had ever before.. so i bought myself a bottle off ebay for 70 dollars and i wore it a few times but as i got more perfumes i realized just because it evoked something in me doesn’t mean i want to wear it.. the greenness felt too bitter too sharp too green.. i wasn’t getting the rose that this scent is allegedly centered on.. now i only have a decant i made from that bottle i bought and let my friend hold on to that bottle for me. i didn’t dare sell it bc what if i want it again in my life? so i kept it within the family but out of sight and out of mind. but i had pulled out the decant a month or so ago to remind myself to try it out this spring. i had only ever worn it in the hottest sunniest days of summer before bc that’s when i fell in love with it and i thought that type of bitter elegant greenness could only be enjoyed as a foil to the most unrelenting harsh summer heat, but i listened to my heart and put it on today and i’m enjoying it more than ever. it feels like the plants poking their heads out of the soil after this rainy week. it smells like sunshine on the flowers in the garden. the green opening faded quickly and showed me the rose i had always missed. a beautiful rose with the stem and it’s leaves from the english garden that you just rinsed in water and it’s sweetened ever so slightly by the black currant. i feel that black currant used to be used in the way pear is now to add that delicate clean sweetness to a composition.. l’ombre now feels to me like a less powdery sunnier version of something like l’artisan parfumeur drôle de rose or like other 80s roses like ombré rose but with green leaves instead of powdery vanilla.. theres ambergris in the base adds that sunny skin quality .. that aspect used to remind me of a fur coat.. that touch takes this perfume from being a cold unrelatable prickly green rose to the most elegant relaxed lauren bacall lounging in the garden on a spring afternoon.. i’m excited to continue falling in love with l’ombre dans l’eau all over again this spring because i am starting to feel like i was doing it a disservice by projecting my childhood memories on it when it was never that. it’s a springtime rose still on the bush still dewy after the rain but the bright sun is shining down on it..

Not everyone can say they’ve been to the Big Apple, but VIVIAN BACALL, a FORTY-FIVE year-old CISWOMAN has lived in UPPER EAST SIDE, MANHATTAN for TEN YEARS. This is the city of dreams and SHE/HER knows it, because they came to NYC to be an EDITOR FOR VOGUE MAGAZINE. Well, that and a PARTNER IN CRIME to JULIAN CANOVA. Living in the city means they meet all kinds of people, but everyone always seems to think they look like SARAH PAULSON. They even got away with free cab fare once because of it!
꙳ 𝐈 , square - cut or pear - shaped
full name. vivian baccal
nickname(s). viv
age. forty - five
birthday. november 20 -- scorpio sun
hometown. san francisco, california
current location. manhattan, new york
ethnicity. caucasian
nationality. american
gender. cis woman
pronouns. she/her
orientation. homosexual
꙳ 𝐈𝐈 , these rocks don’t loose their shape
When walking into the Vogue office, there’s no way you won’t be noticed by her. She’s the one keeping an eye on everything and making sure everyone knows exactly how to get their job done - and she’s great at it too, thanks. Vivian is as lively and easy-going as a journalist is allowed to be; a fashion fiend by nature and a Vogue enthusiast by heart, she takes pride in managing photoshoots and magazine issues only to have it fit the high standards of one Mrs. Anna Wintour. Definitely also rocks that hairstyle in a much more fashionable way than the boss, but ask her and she’ll humbly deny it. Most times. And that’s when she’s around the office. Out of it, Vivian finds herself as part of a heist crew with a couple of her closest friends. All in the name of good friendship - and a few thousands of dollars here and there, duh.
꙳ 𝐈𝐈𝐈 , diamonds are a girl’s best friend !
Vivian has always dreamed of working in the fashion industry, and experience has only made it better. Along with her position at Vogue, comes the responsability of keeping track of fashion weeks, managing contacts for issues and occasionally collaborating with articles.
Her first experience with crime was at a young age, when her then girlfriend, previously experienced with small cons, convinced her to take a small part on an amusement park heist. Viv was instantly hooked.
As time passed and her career as a journalist evolved, doing cons was no longer a necessity, and Vivian stopped being a con for a little while. However, she was never really able to resist temptation when one of her old crewmates showed up with a new and exciting plan.
Viv’s an easy-going and fun figure to have around, although extremely professional and ambitious. Her job always comes first, but she’s more often than not going out and creating connections - supposedly in the name of Vogue, but hey, she’s just human, right? And the city’s packed with stunning women... 🤭

For the domestic asks: 5, 12, 14, 22, 28
do you want pets in the future? what kinds and how many?
I’m honestly not sure. I love my dog right now and the thought of losing her devastates me, especially since she’s my first non-fish pet ever. I don’t now if I could ever love another pet, but if so I’d love another small dog and a black cat.
if you were to grow a garden, what kinds of plants would you grow?
I’d love to have lots and lots of land, where I could have orchards of apples, peaches, pears, plums, and cherries, like some kind of Eden. There’d be a little, but hearty stream running nearby, which would help. I’d have rooms for big things like pumpkins and squashes and watermelons, but also things like carrots and peas and lettuce and green beans. I want strawberries and blackberries and raspberries and blueberries and a big, fat patch of the most heavenly herbs. And of course, I must ALWAYS have flowers—things bees like and some for me, as well. If I could run through fields of my own lilacs I think I could be happy forever.
would you rather wander in the forest or swim in the ocean?
Ocean! I love the warmth and summers, and swimming in the ocean reminds me of some of my happiest time. Also, no ticks!
how do you like to wear your hair?
I like it best when I’ve pin-curled it and it loosens up a bit so it’s soft and I feel like Lauren Bacall, but more practically, I like to twist it up in a Gibson tuck just to feel a little fancier than my regular ponytail.
favorite dessert?
How pretentious does it sound if I say Crème brûlée? Because it’s that or chocolate chip banana bread.
