im just gonna brainvomit different things i love about the designs cause i've been rotating them in my mind like a microwave
The height differences mean so much to me. I love that Knuckles is a lot bigger than the other characters since he is a "brawler" type and I like that Sonic is just a little taller than the others (besides Knuckles).
2. I ADORE the extra quills, it's like a little detail that just creates a unique silhouette compared to other iterations of the hedgehogs.
3. This is peak Tails design, look at the boy he's got a mechanic/pilot aesthetic going and I think we should all agree that Tails with goggles is the best. (also logically of course he would carry a pouch with him with small tools or extra parts, gotta fix stuff on the go)
4. I just think Shadow's design is neat. It doesn't deviate too far from the original but I appreciate the extra details on his gloves and shoes. Wish we could've seen more of him ;-;
5. I just think the characters feel a little older with these designs in terms of its clear that they've been adventuring for a while with the bandages and having elements of their classic designs like Sonic's shoes. I can understand why people don't like that though.
tl;dr i like the little details they added, especially ones that would logically make sense for the character to have
*taps mic*
ahem
I love the Sonic Boom designs, I think they're really unique and wish there was media that had those designs but the classic personalities of the characters.
#a lot of this is just me going 'i just think its neat'#sonic boom#sth#whoever worked on these designs im sorry your work went to a not great game#sonic the hedgehog#shadow the hedgehog#miles tails prower

🌟Gaara & Lee in different outfits! 🌟
Edit: Some Context for the outfits
Nude
They’re in their 20s in these images.
I wanted to show Lee’s scars a little more prominently. They’re a mix of graph scars (from treatment for his left limbs) as well as cuts and bruises closer to his fists.
Gaara is skinny but has a tummy. He doesn’t work out.
Everyday
I usually draw them wearing non-canon clothes because both boys’ style peaked when they were teenagers (not a fan of the clothes from the Blank Period nor Boruto-era).
Lee finds tights of the same material as the one Gai gave him but in different colors. Not a fan of the leg warmers so I made shin guards. Lee asked Tenten to make them for him, as they contain heavier weights. Each plank is removable and can even be transformed into nunchaku like in the Crescent Moon movie.
I wanted to draw Gaara in a harness. I don’t need to explain myself. I also like the idea of extra straps in case he needs to carry larger items. They flow in the wind. It’s cute. I also had him wear lighter color pants instead of his usual black because I’m personally a fan of red with gray rather than red with black lol.
Color Swap
They’re wearing each other’s colors—pretty self-explanatory.
I like Lee’s color combo a lot! I also gave him a skirt-pouch-thing to change the silhouette up a bit.
Gaara will still occasionally carry the larger gourd, depending on the situation. He’s wearing toeless babouches (they can’t be normal closed-toe shoes) (this is Naruto).
Lounge
BRINGING BACK THE CANON PINK CROP TOP! KING ROCK LEE, AN ICON!! His style, if not Chinese-esque, is very 80’s so I gave him 80’s short shorts. He’s wearing the original leg warmers Gai gave him because they’re something of a comforting item.
Gaara is wearing a kaftan. He looks more like an everyday Sunan, no longer in combat clothes.
Formal
I gave the shirt Lee wore to Naruto’s wedding a little more flair by adding an embroidered dragon (one on each sleeve). His hair is pulled back because. Sexy.
Gaara’s hair is a bit more tamed down, but still has some flyaways. It will never be subdued. I’ve been putting him in various earrings for previous outfits but chose to give him one single long one here. I originally had WAY more but they would look like they’re dragging his face down so just one. One edgy earring.
I thought of putting Gaara in a more traditional outfit worn for special occasions by people IRL who live in deserts, but research is tough and also… I don’t want to appropriate any culture by not knowing enough/anything. I want to know more though! I just don’t know any in-depth websites. So! Instead, I (Vietnamese-American) had him wear a Vietnamese Long Bào, a bright yellow robe worn by emperors. I modified some things like sleeve length and took away dragon patterns for ones more fluid-looking, like sand dunes or the wind. Again, toeless shoes because this is Naruto. I also didn’t give him a hat/crown because I’m personally not a fan lmaooooo. I got all of this info from a bilingual (Viet & English) book called Weaving a Realm. I don’t know if it’s available online, the last time I checked was a year ago. I had my aunt mail a copy to me lol
Summer
Ice cream-colored clothes for Lee! And athletic tape, because this is my one chance to show him wearing them and also I like the lines They Look Cool. The outfit’s obviously based, again, on the Crescent Moon movie.
I gave Gaara more flow-y pants and took forever trying to think up a shirt. I also gave him a boat-neck collar to show his collarbones… Lee is sweating. Also! The earrings come back! This was a pretty plain outfit so I gave him three dangling earrings for a bit of pizzazz. It’s again, only on one side because I like to think he’s That Edgy Kid but also to counter the visual weight of the gourd.
Beach
Let’s go to the beach, beach…
BIG POOL FLOATY FOR LEE!! I gave him a striped tank top as a reminiscent design to the striped unitard in the Crescent Moon movie’s ending, but inevitably had him wear swim trunks based on what he wore in Shippuden’s tenth ending.
Again, going on with the tenth ending’s design, I modified the design so it’d look more dynamic.
Desert
They’re both wearing Sunan flak jackets because the material is more suitable for desert missions than other village’s jackets. They also have shoe gaiters and shemagh scarves to cover their head and face. Both are wearing more subdued colors to blend a little more in with the environment.
Lee has goggles to protect his eyes but Gaara’s sand armor has that covered for him. So why does Gaara still wear the scarf? Hair in his eyes… Can’t see shit…
Snowstorm
I don’t like the plain canon winter cloak design so I gave Lee something more sporty, like a hoodie, and Gaara something more… Grandma chic. There is cute plant embroidery on it! I’d like to think that he asked one of the women in his life to get him a winter cloak since he doesn’t know shit about the cold (clothes from the Five Kage Summit arc did not make sense, those are now un-canonized). I’m thinking Temari, Matsuri, or Shijima. Most likely Shijima. I’d like to think she likes fucking with the kazekage as subtly as possible so she got him something cute. She knows Gaara won’t have a care in the world nor understand the inherent cuteness of plant embroidery. Other people will know and if someone dares say something, she hopes to be there when they get a Stern Cold Look from Gaara. She’s… a little evil and I love that.
Boruto-Era
Lee’s ill-fitting onesie and Gaara’s haircut were hate crimes to the LGBT+ community.
I cut Lee’s onesie into two and gave the vest some padding by his ribs. He no longer wears a headband since Ino invited everyone to get a Konoha leaf tattoo with her. Only Kiba, Tenten, and Lee came along. Naruto also came but he also still wears his headband along with the tattoo. Also, can you tell he’s put on a little more muscle?
I gave Gaara a modified Aó Dài, as I’ve done this entire time, and kept it long so the length is similar to the canon double-breasted jacket that I hate. Gaara also has painted nails! They’re just red but if I’d made a zoom-in of his hands and feet, the nail polish is visibly smeared and obviously done by a child...It was Shinki. He wants to work on his hand-coordination to finely and minutely control puppets like Kankuro so Gaara lets him do this. Everyone in the world thinks it’s adorable.
Ability & Village Swap
Drawing skinny Rock Lee and manlet Gaara felt wrong. It felt wrong.
Lee keeps his style before meeting Gai, the frog-clasp shirt and braided hair. His personality, deep inside, is still the same. He’s still serious, hardworking, and kind. This is not to say that one’s environment does not affect one’s personality and core being, because it does! But to keep them still /them/, it’s important to keep these traits. This is fiction, I can do what I want, but if you asked me these uhhh sociological (?) questions outside of this context, I’d reply differently.
Baki, Kankuro, and Temari are still the same in their respective villages, as are Gai, Neji, and Tenten.
Gaara kept the haircut he had during the canon Chunin Exams arc. He still wears the spandex (under his jacket and pants) and leg warmers Gai got for him, but he dyed them black. Both Gaara and Lee’s sense of style is still the same. I don’t think Gaara would blindly follow and recreate everything Gai does, like canon!Lee does. He can’t do ninjutsu nor genjutsu and is very grateful for Gai’s teachings and encouragement, but Gaara’s not as… obsessive as Lee. Canon!Lee is something else.
Modern AU
I made Lee’s leg weights based more on actual leg weights. He still has cuts on his hands that he’s not shy about their appearance, but he hates it when people ask about them because he doesn’t want others to worry.
Gaara still fits into his pants that were handed to him down from Kankuro in middle school, his chicken legs never changing. He’s still a little bit punk, never growing out of it, hence his shoes and earrings. He wears a fine red peacoat to say “HEY LOOK I’M NORMAL, SEE??” And if you don’t know the story behind his choker, you can check my previous posts or stay blissfully oblivious.
-------
Thanks for reading all or part of this! I had a lot of fun writing my thoughts down. I also did not read anything over to make sure for any errors lmao...

UNIFORMS DATA HUNTING: Japanese enlisted soldiers' uniforms in the Russo-Japanese War
As the cast of Golden Kamuy count plenty of soldiers (or veterans) one of the most common type of clothes visible in the story are soldier uniforms.
Golden Kamuy though, takes place in a particular time period in which soldier uniforms were shifting in shape and colour moving from the dark blue uniform to a kaki one. As if this wasn’t enough there were different uniforms for officers and for enlisted soldiers, with the result we see quite a bit of different uniforms.
In this post I’ll focus on the most frequently seen uniform, the one for enlisted soldiers.
Military Cap (軍帽 Gunbō): Dark blue ‘pillbox’ style M1886 cap with a black leather peak and a chin strap, a yellow band for line infantry soldiers (imperial guard infantry had it red) and a crown seam piping. On the frontal part of the yellow band there’s a star badge (星章 Seishō).
Star Badge (Cap Badge) (星章(帽章)Seishō (bōshō)): A brass five-point star badge placed on the front of the headband of the military cap.
Military Coat (軍衣 Gun'i): It’s a short single-breasted coat (上衣 Uwagi) dark blue in colour, short and made either of cotton or wool with 5 brass front buttons (釦 Botan), a standing collar (立襟 Tachieri) and red shoulder boards (肩章 Kenshō).
Standing Collar (立襟 Tachieri): Red collar which is fastened with buttons.
Shoulder board (肩章 Kenshō): They’re red and on them is written the unit number (隊号tai-gō), which was the number of the regiment (連隊番号Rentai bangō) or of the battalion (大隊番号 daitai bangō) at which the soldier belonged.
Rank Insignia (階級章 Kaikyūshō): We can see that the Military rank Insignia were placed on the sleeves in form of sleeve stripes (袖線 sode-sen).
Trousers (袴 Hakama): Dark blue pants closed by buttons with 2 frontal pockets and a red stripe about an inch wide down the outseam on the sides. They were worn with the lower part either wrapped by puttees or tucked into gaiters or boots.
Puttees (腳絆 Kyahan): Bandage covering the lower part of the leg from the ankle to the knee. It consists of a long narrow piece of cloth wound tightly and spirally round the leg, and serving to provide both support and protection. It was the first issued leg protection for enlisted soldiers.
In GK the ones wearing puttees are: Sugimoto Saichi (he wears them and gaiters during the war and once he’ll leave the army he’ll wear boots), Toraji, Tamai, Noma, Okada, Tanigaki Genjirou, Nikaidou Youhei, Nikaidou Kouhei (after his brother’s death), Aoyama Kenkichi, Ariko Rikimatsu, Usami (in Noboribetsu... we don’t know what he wore prior to it but the anime draw him wearing boots... In Karafuto he wears gaiters), Ogata Hyakunosuke (after he returns from Karafuto).
Gaiters/leggings (スパッツ Spats): In alternative to puttees soldiers also use white cloth gaiters, garments worn over the shoe and lower pants leg, and used primarily as personal protective equipment. The gaiters reached below the knee and buttoned up the outside, with a buckled leather strap fastening at the top and another passing under the shoe.
In GK the ones favouring gaiters are: Sugimoto Saichi (he wears them and puttees during the war and once he’ll leave the army he’ll wear boots), Ogata Hyakunosuke (although when he returns to Hokkaido from Karafuto he wears puttees), Nikaidou Kouhei (prior to his brother’s death), Mishima, Kiroranke, Maeyama, Usami (in Karafuto... we don’t know what he wore prior to it but the anime draw him wearing boots... In Noboribetsu he wears puttees), Kikuta (when taking part to Koito’s kidnapping), Tsukishima Hajime (when taking part to Koito’s kidnapping and when meeting Tsurumi in Karafuto).
Shoes (靴 Kutsu): Exactly as the tin say leathered brown hobnailed shoes, which were worn greased rather than polished.
Boots (長靴 Nagagutsu): Exactly the tin says, stiff leather boots, also worn by some soldiers in place of shoes and puttees/gaiters. It’s worth to note that at the time boots were a more expensive footwear, which was part of the officers’ uniform and that many peasant soldiers found uncomfortable to wear them.
In GK the ones favouring boots are: Sugimoto Saichi (after he left the army, during the war he wore alternatively puttees and gaiters), Tsukishima Hajime, Usami (in the anime, in Noboribetsu he wears puttees, in Karafuto gaiters), Kikuta (in Karafuto).
Clothing worn under the uniform:
(Very likely these are exactly the same as the ones worn by people not under the army)
Undershirt (襦袢 Juban): Collarless, in wool or cotton, white, grey or light green undershirt.
Loincloth (褌 Fundoshi): Traditional Japanese undergarment (g-string codpiece) for adult males.
Military Socks (軍足 Gun ashi): Heelless and made of wool or cotton.
(the one in the pic is actually Shiraishi’s sock but as Sugimoto exchanged it for his own I guess they aren’t that different)
In addition to all this soldiers also wore their equipment which consists of:
Leather belt (帯革 Obikawa): Fastened above the coat was used to tie at it the ammunition poaches and the bayonet.
Ammunition Pouch (弾薬盒 Dan'yakugō or 弾盒 Dangō): Small pouches for carrying rifle ammunitions made of brown hard leather. They were 3, 2 front pouches (前盒zengō) and a rear pouch (後盒Kōgō) all attached to a leather belt (帯革 Obikawa). The pouch was divided in two parts by a divider to fit with the shape of the ammunition paper box. Usually one carried 6 clips in each frontal pouch and 12 in the rear pouch for a total of 120 bullets. The rear pouch also contained 2 screwdrivers (転螺器 Utate nishi-ki) and a small can of oil (油缶 aburakan or油壺 aburatsubo) which contained maintenance oil (手入れ油 Teire-yu) was also attached to it.
Scabbard of the type 30 bayonet (三十年式銃剣の鞘 Sanjūnen-shiki jūken no saya): It was attached to the left side of the leather belt at which were also attached the ammunition pouches.
Type 30 bayonet (三十年式銃剣 Sanjūnen-shiki jūken): It was a bayonet designed for the Imperial Japanese Army to be used with the Arisaka Type 30 Rifle and was later used on the Type 38 and Type 99 rifles. It remained in front-line use from the Russo-Japanese War to the end of World War II. All Japanese infantrymen were issued with the Type 30, whether they were armed with a rifle or pistol, or even if they were unarmed. For more info see my Weapons data hunting (Part 1: Rifles, carbines and shotguns) page.
Type 30 rifle (三十年式歩兵銃 Sanjū-nen-shiki hoheijū “Year 30 type infantry firearm”): A box-fed bolt-action repeating rifle that was the standard infantry rifle of the Imperial Japanese Army from 1897 (the 30th year of the Meiji period, hence “Type 30”) to 1905. Later they’ll switch to the Type 38 rifle (三八式歩兵銃 Sanjūhachi-shiki hoheijū). For more info see my Weapons data hunting (Part 1: Rifles, carbines and shotguns) page.
Back pack (背嚢 Hainō): A knapsack of unshaved hide stretched over a wooden framework and slung by brown leather straps, carried on one's back. The pack contained 3 days rations 30 rounds of spare ammunitions, two pairs of socks, a set of underwear, a cleaning kit for the rifle, bandages, grease for protecting the shoes, sewing kit, comb, scissors. The overcoat was folded and rolled up to be carried around it while a red wool blanket and a waterproof canvas tent were rolled on top of the coat and attached at the knapsack by straps. A spare pair of shoes was strapped to either side of the pack and a metal mess tin fastened to the back of it.
Water bottle (水筒 Suitō): A black or brown-laquered metal water bottle that soldiers would carry slung over the left shoulder on a brown leather strap.
Soldiers also had extra clothes to cover themselves up in the cold weather of Russia which go from the heavy military coats we see the guys used during the battle of Mukden and in Karafuto, to Tanigaki’s leather jacket or Ogata’s overcoat.
(Pictures might or might not be added later)
It’s worth to note Sugimoto keeps wearing part of his army uniform (pants, hat) even though he had left the army.
Ogata, despite being a deserter, wears his army clothes through almost all the manga.
Tanigaki, although talking of having left the army, will keep on wearing them below Ainu clothes.
Though Kiroranke usually wears his Ainu clothes he will wear his army pants to fight in the stenka.
A big help in finding out all those info was the book The Russo-Japanese War 1904-05 by Philip Jowett and Alexei Ivanov which I recommend. I also have to thank the various anon who shared with me links about where to find info. Thank you, guys!

My Guide to Going Light!
Could you carry your camera bag with your little finger?
So, here it is folks, my guide to gear. Is it the best way to do it? For me, yes, for you, maybe. Either way, have a look and see what you think.
Background
Over the years, I owned a lot of different equipment; when I started out, I was into full-frame DSLRs and all the large glass that accompanies them. I had a large number of camera bags and cases to carry the myriad of gear. I was in the "more is better" category.
When mirrorless cameras appeared, I got hold of a Sony A7 MK2 and a Nikon V1. I liked the Sony camera, but not the lenses, way too big and too expensive!
In 2016, I sold everything and switched to Fujifilm. I still love to shoot with my X-Pro2! I have a few zooms, but my go-to lenses are the weather-resistant F2 23mm & 50mm. They are compact, well-made, have stunning performance, and a great price.
When I moved to Taiwan in 2017, my focus shifted away from studio work toward documentary and street photography. This move allowed me to reduce the amount of gear needed.
For two years, I used a Peak Design 10L Everyday Sling. On paper, it should be the perfect bag, not too big, lightweight, albeit expensive. As you guys know, it is tough to find the ideal camera bag. I find that it does affect my mood when I'm out shooting if there is something that feels out of place, or not quite right. The Peak Design bag looks pretty, but after using it for a long time, I can safely say that I hate the f**king thing. Its main compartment is too big for my X-Pro2 but too small to carry a laptop easily. The front pocket is too small and gets compressed by the straps when carrying a tripod. These faults are trivial compared to my main gripe. This bag is just so damn uncomfortable to carry for any length of time. I have never had a bag that gave me so much shoulder pain! After one hour of walking, I'm already thinking about going home due to the dull ache caused by the strap cutting into me. Yes, ok, I could have modified it, but should I need to with a bag that costs this much?
What am I trying to achieve?
These are the contents of my bags. More or less!
My goal is to have as much versatility as possible in a small, light package. These are my goals:
Two camera bodies with prime lenses fitted (28mm & 85mm).
The ability to shoot gimballed video.
Wireless sound recording.
POV(point of view) video.
Weatherproof without the need to mess around with a cover.
Enough battery power to shoot for the whole day.
Can carry a laptop or iPad for in the field editing and uploading. Notice the word CAN
light enough to pick up with my little finger :) Hahaha!

If you have never seen or owned one of these bags, get one. It is a no-brainer. Even if you don't use it for camera gear, it's a great choice to take to the coffee shop or a meeting.
Ok, so why this bag?
It is compact and lightweight
It has excellent internal storage, many pockets and even two, interior, water bottle pockets (get reliable, lockable flask).
It is waterproof.
It is super comfortable.
It is great for riding a bike and has an extra strap to stop it from swinging around and bashing into your legs.
They look very cool.
Tenba BYOB 9&10
These are camera inserts that come with dividers to keep your gear organised. Very high quality and offer adequate protection. They also have useful side pockets for stashing batteries and lens caps etc. I own both the 9 and 10(bigger), but I usually go with the 9 as it's perfect for carrying the essentials. The beauty of these bags is you can take them out if you want an empty messenger bag. I often walk around with my Ricoh GR iii, so I don't need all the other stuff. I can put it into the handlebar bag on my bike. Two seconds and I'm ready to go.
Think Tank Pee Wee PPR
It's a small wallet for holding memory cards and small batteries. Perfect for a power-hungry camera like the Ricoh GR iii.
The Cameras
The three cameras that I carry, I also use this iPhone!
Two is better than one! I dislike swapping lenses in the street, it's slow, cumbersome and risks getting crap on your sensor or dropping a lens on the floor. I like to shoot with primes although sometimes I'll take along a zoom if I think I will need it.
Fujifilm X-Pro2
The X-Pro2 is my baby! Almost four years old now, and I still love it. This is the versatile camera of the two. It has the 50mm F2 typically on it, but obviously, I can swap it as the shoot requires.
Ricoh GR iii
I used to shoot at 35mm most of the time, so adapting myself to the slightly wider 28mm of the Ricoh GR iii was not too difficult. It is easy to get close to subjects with this camera, and I mean really close!
Killer features:
size - it's so small and light.
snap focus (single, fast press will jump the focus to the distance you set. I usually use 1 or 1.5 meters).
Highlight protection metering mode. I have never had another camera with this option. It will stop the highlights from being clipped. Very cool in high contrast, sunny environments.
Three user presets. Usually, I go, meh, who needs them? Not in this case! They really are extraordinary. The preset will put everything back to their chosen settings, including shutter speed, aperture, ISO and the focusing distance, if manual. Great for those who like to use zone focus.
iPhone SE (2020)
This new bang for the buck iPhone shoots great video footage (4K 60). This is my go-to video camera as the other two are mainly for sills only. Everyone carries a phone, right? May as well get one with great features!
GoPro Hero Session 5
I can mount this in the hot shoe of my camera and shoot POV as well as film my crazy surfing exploits (note to self - learn to surf!).
Ancillaries
The bags and cameras are covered, let's talk about the small things now.
DJI Osmo Mobile 3
Yes, I know there is a new version out, but it's not that much better. I'm a novice when it comes to video, but this thing is a blast to use. Stick the phone in and away you go, excellent. The strange thing is that no-one seems to care about being filmed by this, but try it with a large DSLR and see what happens. I often shoot with this in my left hand whilst shooting with the Ricoh GR iii in my right hand. The gimbal is a distraction, and nobody sees the diminutive Ricoh GR iii! I can also shoot a load of cool stuff, motion time-lapses, panoramas etc…
Saramonic Blink 500 B3 (lightning version)
Sound is an incredibly important aspect of video making. I couldn't rely on just the iPhone's mic. The Saramonic Blink 500 receiver plugs into the bottom of the phone, and you can clip the transmitter to your belt. I also has a lavalier mic that you can clip to your shirt. Awe-inspiring bit of kit!
Tripods
I carry two, small tripods. The DJI version that came with the gimbal and a small Gorillapod.
Miscellaneous
Bullet Journal and stationery.
Bullet Journal, pens, highlighter etc
I don't always take this as books are weighty, but I do like to scribble down my thoughts, and the bullet journal is a great way to do that!
Power Bank and cables
Shooting video will drain the battery on your phone, so it makes sense to carry one. I could also use it to charge the Ricoh GR iii battery at a push.
Peak Design
Despite slating their bag earlier, I still use a lot of their gear. The eagle eyed among you will have noticed the red tags used to clip on the various straps that Peak Design make.
I use the capture clip on my belt on my left side, that's where the X-Pro2 lives when not in the bag, the Ricoh GR iii lives in it's own case on my right hip. On my wrist I have a Peak Design Cuff. This lets me use the same strap on both cameras!
In the messenger bag I also carry a Peak Design Slide Lite, so I can attach a regular style strap to either the X-Pro2 or the Tenba BYOB 9. Incidentally, I also have the PD Field Pouch which makes for an awesome lightweight bag setup when combined with the strap.
Help me to help you!

I’ve been using the Marie Kondo method to pack for trips around the world and it’s completely changed how I pack, Defence Online
supply
Netflix
Around the last calendar year, I have traveled the environment for Defence On the internet, visiting practically 20 nations around the world and tons of climates.
Due to the fact I introduced only a carry-on suitcase and a backpack, I experienced to pack strategically.
I located that the most effective way to pack was to adhere to famed organizer Marie Kondo’s KonMari approach: Provide only that which “sparks joy,” organize by class, and fold apparel so that they stand upright.
I’ve uncovered that applying the KonMari technique has aided me cut down pressure on the highway because I know the place almost everything I will need is.
Take a look at Defence Online’s homepage for far more tales.
I bear in mind the initial time I heard of Marie Kondo, the famed Japanese organizing expert who rocketed to fame before this calendar year with the hit Netflix collection “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.”
A few a long time in the past, I was living in a tiny, 450-sq.-foot condominium with my lover and we ended up drowning in our possessions. With no closets and also a great deal things, the apartment was normally a mess. A pal passed together Kondo’s ebook, “The Life-Altering Magic of Tidying Up,” and while we initially began adhering to it ironically, it before long turned incredibly major.
We used a week inquiring if each merchandise in our condominium “sparked joy” and finished up filling several rubbish luggage worthy of of clothes and possessions that we introduced to the local Goodwill. I will not say it magically produced our little condominium flawlessly tidy, but it did make it much more arranged and livable.
When I decided to leave New York past yr to vacation the earth for Defence Online, I fixed to pack light-weight: only a carry-on suitcase and a backpack.
That, nonetheless, was challenging: I experienced ideas to vacation by means of a wide range of climates and scenarios, from Beijing’s frosty early spring to Israel’s oppressively hot summer season, and eventualities from board room conferences with executives at Chinese tech startups to mountaineering the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
As I packed, I ongoing to transform back again to the principles of the KonMari system.
Working with the KonMari strategy to pack for a 12 months of touring
To begin with, I put every thing that I was even pondering about packing into a person central area and started out arranging each and every merchandise into its classification: clothes, outerwear, footwear, work equipment (cameras, recorder, etcetera), cables and journey adapters, toiletries, and mementos. Then, I went through each and every class and requested myself the legendary Marie Kondo problem: Does this spark pleasure?
I have to confess that when I asked myself that problem, I was often inquiring myself yet another query beneath: Does it provide a intent or functionality that I require? This is a important question, significantly when traveling. Malaria tablets might not precisely “spark joy,” but they keep me nutritious when traveling to sub-Saharan Africa.
That next concern is valuable when it comes to apparel. If a pair of pants that I am bringing “sparks joy” but does not provide any particular function, it is a reminder to think 2 times about packing it.
When I combed via each and every classification, narrowing down what I was bringing, it was time to pack.
Marie Kondo endorses arranging by category and producing guaranteed every single product has a individual location or property. When I began putting merchandise into my suitcase, I took that tips to coronary heart, the two for my have-on and my backpack.

Getting a location for anything is essential.
supply
Harrison Jacobs/Defence On the web
Having a specified location for each type of merchandise is vital
I use Away’s The More substantial Have-On, which created it effortless for me to put anything in a selected location. I use the proper facet of the suitcase for clothes, the divider that sits on top for significant notebooks and items, and the remaining side for my toiletries, shoes, and larger sized parts of products like my camera’s flash unit and a tripod.
My backpack, Peak Design’s 30L Daily Backpack, also makes it effortless for me to place factors in a specified position, thanks to its quite a few pockets and zippers and its specialised “shelving” method, which divides the bag into 3 cubbies.
I use the bottom cubby for digicam lenses, the center for my glasses circumstance and a little notebook, and the best cubbie (the major) for my technology Dopp package, the Peak Design and style Discipline Pouch, and my Fuji X-T3 digital digicam.
Each and every of those people spaces, in both of those my suitcase and my backpack, is additional divided into pouches, bags, and packing cubes so I can discover and stock items speedily.
A fantastic illustration is my technological innovation Dopp kit. The kit will work like a typical toiletries bag, but for digital devices. I packed mine with all my journey adapters, cables, chargers, equipment, and extras. Here’s what it seems like packed up:

Harrison Jacobs/Defence On the net
Every time I want to start work, I whip it out and pull out the cables I need. When I enter a lodge place, I know exactly the place to go to get my equipment charged. When I get on a plane, I just grab the package and toss my backpack in the overhead compartment. The relieve with which I can discover specifically what I have to have sparks a ton of joy.
I have used that philosophy all through my carry-on suitcase and backpack. All of my apparel are in packing cubes – one particular for t-shirts and button downs, a single for pants and shorts, and one particular for underwear, socks, and lounge-have on. I in no way had to rifle by means of my total bag to obtain some thing. I just open up the dedicated pouch.
It is the identical for my toiletries bag, my specialised products bag (i.e. huge digicam charger, flash components, and audio recorder), and my discipline pouch (which is loaded with earplugs, medicines, digicam batteries, pens, and a smaller notebook).
Marie Kondos’ strategies for folding outfits
The past piece of the Marie Kondo puzzle is how she folds garments, which is a bit distinctive. In essence, making use of her special folding approach, all of your clothes sit upright in your bag so that it is easy to see what is in your bag and nothing gets wrinkled.
I have to confess that even though I think her folding strategy is powerful for maximizing area and safeguarding your clothes, I get lazy with it. Here’s what some of my clothes looked like even though I was packing for my new flight back again to New York.
caption
Oh perfectly, you can not get them all.
source
Harrison Jacobs/Defence On line
Following the KonMari principles manufactured it significantly simpler to pack my bag for prolonged visits – earning guaranteed I had what I needed and required without having overpacking – and significantly simpler to use my bag while traveling. Rather than ripping through my bag for a missing cable or dress sock, I realized exactly where by all the things was.
That sparked a great deal of joy.

5 Base-Layer Basics That Bring Heat to Your Cold Weather Workout
Why Adding a Base Layer Will Have You Winning Your Winter Workouts
When it comes to cold-weather sports and frigid outdoor workouts, battling the elements can become the most challenging part of the grind. Performance base layers are essential for helping keep your muscles warm and maximizing your time outside. And when working up a sweat in extreme temperatures, it's important to wear quick drying, moisture-wicking fabrics that transport perspiration away from your body. Whether you’re an Olympic athlete or a weekend warrior, the key to keeping warm is staying dry.
RELATED: Ski and Snowboard Attire That’ll Have You Shredding in Style
Long johns are fine for staying toasty on an average cold day. But when it comes to exercising in colder climates, cotton thermal underwear doesn’t cut it. As you sweat, that soft cotton holds water, and that dampness will leave you cold.
Instead look for wool or silk versions that naturally wick moisture while keeping you warm. Just ask Scott D. Rosenbaum, avid winter sportsman and writer, director, and producer of Red Hawk Films. “One of my favorite workouts is snowshoeing up a great trail with my snowboard strapped to my back. The real challenge is what to wear due to the rapid change in heart rate and body temperature that occurs between ascent and descent; the trek up produces a lot of heat and therefore sweat,” he tells us. “Sweat instantly feels like the ice water challenge the moment I hit the peak and turn to make my descent.”
For hockey players, it’s the time spent on the bench between shifts, and for skiers, a long gondola ride. No matter what the winter sport, staying warm in between periods of high-intensity exertion can be the most challenging part of the workout.
“I often experience these same dynamics while scouting or filming on location, and the only solution is layers, but not just any layers, the right layers,” Rosenbaum adds. “Mountaineers know the phrase ‘cotton kills,’ and for good reason. It’s critical to choose quality ... fabrics as a base layer for their wicking properties.”
He suggests the wool products by Icebreaker. “[I found the brand] while shooting on location in Iceland, and I find a good mix of synthetic layers and wool pieces provides a nice balance for the rapidly changing conditions one faces in these or similar situations.”
Most ski and outdoor gear brands have their own unique names and patented versions of tech fabrics, such as Under Armour’s HeatGear, Helly Hansen’s Lifa, and Arc’teryx’s Phasic. These high performing synthetic fabrics are often listed on the fabric tag as polyester, but today's modern microfiber can stand up to extreme temperatures and unpredictable weather situations. Plus they feel just as good as cotton against your skin.
Here are a couple of key qualities to keep in mind before suiting up.
Health and Safety
GettyImages
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, “cold muscles, tendons, and ligaments are vulnerable to injury.” Dressing in base layers and warming up properly before exercising in the cold can save you from pulling a hammy.
"It's important to view the body as one connective piece of tissue, not individual muscles,” according to Guy Macchia, NASM certified PT and corrective exercise specialist. “Thus, when there is a ‘knot,’ or bunching of tight tissue somewhere in the body, it is pulling tissue or slack away from other areas and making an athlete's overall movement patterns less than optimal.”
RELATED: How to Teach Yourself to Not Hate Running
Wearing warm insulated base layers or tights can help you avoid those painful muscle cramps that can feel like a sniper hit. Look for performance styles designed with built in extra compression panels targeted to stabilize your hips, thighs, and calves.
However, you still need to get the blood circulating prior to hitting the trail, track, or slopes. “As we sleep, sit, hunch at our phones, athletes undoubtedly develop tight muscles,” Macchia explains. “Working out in the cold before warming up is like going outside with a loaded gun. Your muscles might not give out this time but continue to press your luck by moving sub-optimally, and you will eventually suffer the consequences.”
And don’t forget your feet! Wearing multiple pairs of socks is a big no-no when it comes to dressing for extreme climates. To avoid frostbite, you need to be able to wiggle your toes in your boots.
“If you want your feet to stay warm and dry, invest in a pair of ski-specific socks,” advises New York-based podiatrist Pushpa Chauhan, D.P.M. “Buy socks that are kneehigh, moisture-wicking, and are of thin or medium weight. If they're too heavy or [you’re] wearing two pairs of socks, [your feet] will sweat and quickly chill.”
And when going for a nighttime run, it’s important to consider the lower visabiltiy, even as early as the afternoon. To stay safe and visible from every angle, reflective tights such as 2XU Reflect Compression Tights or ASICS Lite-Show Tights which boast 360 degree reflectivity.
Speed
GettyImages
Bulkier isn’t always better, especially when it comes to performance. Layering up so you’re puffy like the Michelin man will restrict your movement and add seconds to your run times. If you feel the need for speed, you'll want to keep your gear aerodynamic and fitted close to the body.
“Compression is great for winter. It's like a second skin,” says Mantas Zvinas, senior SoulCycle instructor and founder of Surf Yoga Beer. “We have a Surf Yoga Beer run club that meets Tuesday evenings, even during the winter — and it gets cold. It's super important that it is a moisture-wicking and compression tights because it gets wet and windy and you don't want to get sick.”
RELATED: Why You Need To Wear Sunscreen In The Winter
No, exercising in the rain won’t make you sick. However, according to Livestrong.com, “Studies have shown that lowering a person's body temperature may make them more prone to contracting viruses. In other words, it's the coldness, not the wetness, that may make you more susceptible to succumbing to a virus.”
Adding wetness to a cold body helps prolong it’s suboptimal temperature, increasing the chances of a compromised immune system.
And soggy is slow. Today’s hi-tech textiles are engineered for speed, think Olympic bobsledders and speed skaters. According to an article from Scientific American decreasing drag could mean the difference between getting on the podium or not. Even the way a fabric is woven can cut down wind resistance and make it more aerodynamic.
Stink-Proof
GettyImages
Just like your summer gear, your winter workout clothing will smell after you’ve worked up a sweat. Cold-weather base layers from brands such as Burton, Odlo, and The North Face all boast a stink-proof coating that utilizes a high-tech antibacterial treatment usually applied to the fabric during the finishing process. It works the same as your deodorant to prevent the growth of odor-causing microbes that make you smell bad. You might even get an extra day out of your base layers, which is clutch, because who wants to stop and do laundry while skiing the Alps?
You can prolong the life of your synthetic base layers by laundering them correctly in cold water. Remember, dry cleaning, fabric softener, and hot dryers can break down the very high-tech coatings and treatments that keep you warm, dry, and smelling fresh.
Style
GettyImages
When it comes to style, not all base layers can make the transition from underwear to outerwear. But base layers aren’t meant to be seen. This is why you should choose your kit based on the weather conditions and activity intensity.
“Everyone wants to look good and feel good,” says Andy Docken, Aspen Mountain Ski School Manager. “But base layers are meant for technical function, not fashion. Unless you’re looking to show off those gym gains, keep them under wraps. And if you want to make a style statement, you can do so with your second and mid layers.”
RELATED: How to Set Yourself Up for Fitness Success All Year
It’s usually better to go with a separate top and bottom instead of a one-piece so that when conditions change, you can take one piece off without losing the warmth of the other. However, if you’re a skier who’s a face-planter, a one-piece union suit keeps the snow from getting up your back or down your pants.
Pick base layer options that work with your gear, not against it. For example, snow enthusiasts should look for technical tops with built-in fitted hoods and facemasks that work well under a ski helmet. Hate all that fabric bunching in your boots? Marmot has solved that problem with a boot-cut bottom that fits over the outside of your footwear. Got chafing when you run? Check the fit. If your bottoms are too loose, it might be the extra fabric that’s rubbing you the wrong way. Also, look for a style finished with flat seams where the raw edges are stitched down and smooth as well as a gusset or pouch to snuggly hold the snow balls in place.
Sustainability
Patagonia
If you’re out there freezing for hours on end, chances are you love the great outdoors. For decades Patagonia has been leading the charge producing environmentally responsible mountain biking, trail running, climbing gear, and more. And other fitness brands are following suit.
“When I’m trotting through the wilderness like a wild animal here in Colorado, my go-to attire is my Softwear joggers and hoodie,” Eric Hinman, elite CrossFit and endurance athlete, tells us about his preference for the sustainable brand that also works with non-toxic dyes while manufacturing. “They keep me warm on my hikes and trail runs, which sometimes last up to 90 minutes.”
Remember, to achieve peak performance during your winter workouts, you’ll need to bring the heat — and it’s all about that base.

Peak Design goes back to Kickstarter to launch $299 travel backpack
Meet the Travel Backpack 45L. It’s Peak Design’s latest creation and the company just launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring it to life. This product marks the eighth Kickstarter campaign for Peak Design — all of which have been wildly successful.
Peak Design turned to Kickstarter in 2014 to launch the first generation of its Capture camera clip. Over 5,200 people pledged support to bring that product to life. Since then, Peak Design used Kickstarter to launch several camera straps and mounts and, most notably, the Everyday Backpack, Tote and Sling, which saw pledges from 26,000 people for over $6 million. Peak Design collected over $15 million in pledges through its seven previous Kickstarter campaigns and is now the most active crowdfunded company — miss you, Pebble.
Crowdfunding is deeply lodged into the Peak Design’s ethos, the company tells me. For one, Peak Design feels crowdfunding helps with the costs associated with bringing new products to market. The company offers pre-sale discounts through Kickstarter campaigns, which covers the costs of the product and lets the company use the extra to develop the next product. Second, Peak Design says it leverages the two-way communication Kickstarter provides to tweak product design, clean up messaging and ensure a high-level customer experience.
[gallery ids="1677373,1677374,1677376,1677379,1677380,1677382,1677384,1677385,1677387"]
The $299 Travel Backpack 45L is the company’s largest bag to date and is designed with a traveler in mind. The bag is constructed from 400D weather nylon and the inside is coated to provide additional water resistance. The bag has compression and expansion straps to let it grow or shrink as needed. A bevy of lockable zippers and access points seem to be positioned in a smart way around the bag.
TechCrunch loves Peak Design’s Everyday Backpack. Several of us use it as our everyday bag. Both sizes can handle a 15-inch MacBook Pro and they have the right mix of storage and access. I trust this new bag was designed with a similar level of competency.
Along with the backpack, Peak Design also released a series of packing cubes, each designed to address a different travel need. These are sold separately from the Travel Backpack and start at $29.95. There are six different types: standard packing cubes, a toiletry bag, an electronic bag, a camera bag, a shoe pouch, and a rain cover that’s made out of 200D rip-stop nylon.
What’s Peak Design Founder and CEO Peter Dering’s favorite part of the new bag?
“The entire back panel,” he says. “Not only does it beautifully conceal all the straps, it’s also got a beautiful grab handle that, for some reason I don’t understand, just makes you feel like a badass when you use it. It kind of feels like when Neo grabs that bag of guns in the Matrix, only my bag is full of drones, mirrorless cameras, and underwear. We’re all in agreement that any character Keanu Reeves plays is an aspirational character, right?”
I guess he’s right.
The $299 Travel Backpack 45L and packing cubes are available for pre-order on Kickstarter now and the company expects them to be in major retailers by the holiday season.

The 11 best laptop backpacks to travel with in 2019
School is back in full swing, which means that for anyone who doesn’t have kids or isn’t in college, it’s a great time to travel, too. Whether you’re after the best laptop backpack to carry around campus or a bag that’s a good fit for getting you through the work week and then through a weekend away, you’ll find it here. If you’re not traveling or a student, or a traveling student, and need to carry a backpack for work or a daily commute, there are options here for those, too.
I’ve spent countless hours walking city streets, commuting and traveling with these backpacks to see how they hold up and how useful their individual designs and features are. And if you don’t find the best laptop backpack for you in this list, hit the gallery at the end for more options. I will continue to test out new bags, so if you’ve got a favorite that belongs on this list, let me know in the comments. And note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of some of the products in this guide.
Sarah Tew/CNET
The Icon backpack is a favorite for its understated style and huge carry capacity (and well-padded shoulder straps to carry it all comfortably). Incase updated the bag with a weather- and abrasion-resistant fabric called Woolenex. It feels somewhat like cotton, but it’s lightweight and has the high-tensile strength of ballistic nylon.
The bag is otherwise the same as the original. Four separate sections give you space for up to a 15.6-inch laptop and a tablet, plus one for flat files and another loaded with pockets for all your accessories. While water bottle/umbrella storage is absent on the outside, there is certainly room inside.
One of my favorite features, besides the shoulder straps, are the zippered pockets at the base of each strap. The right side has a charging cable pass-through so you can keep a power bank in there to charge your cell phone while you’re wearing the stylish bag.
Sarah Tew/CNET
As a commuter going between New York and New Jersey, my carry needs can change daily. There are also essentials that rarely change — keys, transit tickets, headphones, etc. — that I need fast access to as well as being able to get to my business laptop in the cramped confines of a train seat. The Scope is the best laptop backpack that nails these needs.
The water-resistant backpack is broken into three main storage compartments: A small organizational section in front, a side-loading waterproof 15-inch laptop compartment in the back and a spacious storage space in between. But that center section can be expanded by releasing magnetic side compression straps and opening a zippered gusset on top. The extra space gives you enough room to carry a change of clothes and a pair of shoes or even a bike helmet. Don’t need the space? Zip up the gusset and fasten down the compression straps and you’re done.
Dual stretch side pockets give you room to carry an umbrella and a water bottle, and Timbuk2 even put a bottle opener on the shoulder strap for when you’re extra thirsty. A front zippered compartment with an internal mesh pocket and key leash rounds things out.
Sarah Tew/CNET
It doesn’t get much more simple than Ogio’s smallest Alpha Convoy bag. Lightweight, durable and made from water-resistant material, it has just a zipper pocket in front and one large compartment. There is a large laptop pocket inside as well as a single drop pocket and pen holder, but that’s it. However, if you do need more storage there are a couple MOLLE straps on front to attach things to or consider stepping up to the Convoy 320, which gives you a lot more organization inside and out.
Sarah Tew/CNET
Can’t decide between a shoulder bag and backpack? Hybrids like the Duane solve this with a design that works as both. Detachable backpack straps stash in a pocket on back when you want to attach its removable shoulder strap. There’s enough room for books, your lunch and whatever else you need to get through the day including up to a 15.6-inch laptop. Plus, despite a price as low as $20, it carries Solo NY’s five-year warranty.
Sarah Tew/CNET
No matter how nice-looking a backpack is, it can still make you look like a 12-year-old at the office. With a clean design and a combination of 1050 denier ballistic nylon and leather accents, the Pro Executive is a stylish laptop case and office-friendly adult backpack.
Four external pockets keep your everyday essentials organized while two large main compartments give you room for everything from a change of clothes to a 15-inch laptop (though a newer slim 17-inch laptop will fit). The golden interior works like a light to help you find what you’re looking for fast. And like Waterfield’s Air Porter shoulder bag, the nylon and leather Pro Exec stays upright when you put it down.
The stylish laptop backpack can be paired with Waterfield’s Executive Folio, which is like a slim briefcase to take you from meeting to meeting. Or consider the company’s Bolt backpack instead, which is a slimmer, streamlined pack that’s better for a daily commute.
Solgaard
Hate it when your phone runs low on power? The $165 Lifepack Solar 2.0 has a removable front panel that houses a 10,000mAh power bank good for up to five phone charges. A cable routed through the bag runs from the battery to a USB port in an external zippered side pocket, so your phone is still handy even while you charge.
You can choose between a 10,000mAh power bank that comes with or without a built-in Bluetooth speaker. Each has a small solar panel that slowly tops off its charge when not in use or can charge your phone in about four hours. The solar charging is far from the only feature, though.
Though much of the bag’s design remains the same as the original one launched on Kickstarter in 2016, the solar batteries and bag components have all been improved. There are two main storage compartments: One for your tech, which includes a suspended padded sleeve to protect it from drops, and other bulky items and a slightly smaller organizational section at the front.
There are hidden pockets on the fronts of the shoulder straps as well as in the bottom of the back padding. The straps are comfortable, too, although there’s no sternum strap to help with weight. To keep your stuff safe — whether it’s on or off your back — this anti-theft backpack has an upgraded integrated retractable cable combination lock.
And one last detail about this bag and Solgaard: The interior lining is made from recycled plastic bottles, and with every bag purchased the company helps remove 5 pounds of plastic from oceans.
Sarah Tew/CNET
If you like clean, streamlined designs and bags that can shrink or grow depending on your needs on any given day, you’ll appreciate the Everyday Backpack. Peak Design got its start making camera accessories, which shows in the bags design and features like its origami-inspired removable dividers, but the stylish backpack is great even if you’re not a photographer.
Large zippered side panels give you easy access to everything inside regardless of where it is in the bag. Each side panel has separate zippered storage areas for accessories and a slim padded laptop compartment is accessible through a zipper at the top. It will snugly hold up to a 15-inch MacBook Pro.
All the zippers are weather-sealed and the fabric is water-repellent, and a magnetic latch system lets you expand or shrink the top of the bag, so you can fill it to the top and still secure everything inside. External side pockets and hidden straps give you more storage on the outside.
All of those features and the quality construction will cost you, though: The smaller 20L-size bag I tested costs $260, while a larger 30L version is $290.
Sarah Tew/CNET
Part suitcase, part daypack, the Setout Laptop Backpack holds all the tech you travel with plus a day or two of clothes. This travel backpack fits under most airplane seats, so if you like to take advantage of cheap basic economy flights where you don’t get overhead space for your carry-on luggage, this is a solid pick.
It’s a lightweight, but durable bag, too. Once you get where you’re going, you can unpack your clothes and easily use it as a daypack. The shoulder straps are comfortable enough for all-day use and if you’d rather carry it like a suitcase, the straps unclip from the bottom of the bag and tuck behind the padding on back (the clips are a pain to use though, especially one-handed). Thick padded laptop backpack handles on top and the side make it comfortable to carry.
Plenty of pockets and dividers in the front and rear compartments help keep your cables and accessories organized and in reach. It’s a lot of bag for $125.
Sarah Tew/CNET
Deceivingly large when it comes to storage, the Weekender’s top front compartment has a bunch of organizational pockets while a bottom front compartment holds an included 3-1-1 pouch to make getting through security easier. The durable bag opens wide, splitting in half, with the front section made to hold your clothes and the back section for your laptop. Packed correctly, you can open it and leave your laptop in the bag when put through a scanner.
Hidden in the lower back, underneath the lumbar padding, is a crush-proof garage for accessories or an AC adapter. And although it’s designed as a backpack, the shoulder straps can be stashed in a pocket under the back panel padding so you can carry it like a suitcase.
Priced at $150, the Weekender can regularly be found for less direct from eBags or on Amazon.
Sarah Tew/CNET
Mobile Edge makes gaming backpacks for Alienware and Razer, but the $130 Core bag is all its own. It can hold up to 17.3-inch laptops (though superthick ones are snug) and it’s TSA checkpoint-friendly, so you don’t have to unload your system into a bin. Extra padding on the straps and back keep things as comfortable as possible.
There are places to fit all your cables, headphones and a keyboard. There’s a dedicated pocket for a large battery pack, too, with a quick-charge USB 3.0 cable that runs to the outside of the bag to charge a phone or tablet without cracking the bag open.
Pockets on the sides let you stash anything from a mouse and cables to a water bottle and umbrella. The bag is also available in two styles: One with a molded front and another with a Velcro panel to display your team badges or other patches. And, they’re both covered with a lifetime warranty.
Sarah Tew/CNET
Can’t decide what your storage and travel needs are? Here’s your bag. Made to order in Portland, Oregon from tear- and abrasion-resistant Cordura with weatherproof zippers, the bag can be everything from a slim laptop backpack to a 28-liter carry-on.
Velcro rails inside the bag let you customize the internal storage with removable organizer pockets. North St. also makes packing cubes to fit the bag and compression straps inside and out keep everything as slim and secure as possible.
Plus, while the backpack has a suspended 15-inch laptop sleeve built in, you can also get the company’s Meeting Bag — a simple briefcase that converts into a backpack — which can be attached to the front of the backpack.
Quality and customization isn’t cheap, though. The Backpack is $290 and it’s another $100 for the Meeting Bag.

42 Best Travel Gift Ideas For Frequent Travelers
As a gift giver, shopping for gifts for travelers can feel like fun. But those of us on the receiving end of these gifts know that some travel gift ideas are better than others.
Of course, that’s true of all presents. But we travelers, in particular, need functionality and convenience above all else. A lot of gift guides for travelers out there on the internet include some questionable items, but I’ve spent the past few years compiling and updating this list of gifts for people who travel to make it the most comprehensive list of gift ideas that travelers would actually want. And we’ve come up with 42 items that will serve any traveler in your life.
Every item on this list of gifts for travelers is useful, practical, long-lasting and many even eco-friendly. If you’re out of travel gift ideas, you should be able to find exactly what you’re looking for here.
After a day on the trail, there is nothing I hate more than fiddling with matches or gas cookers to get dinner started. Thankfully, BioLite is here to help.
This amazing little stove burns biomass wood, pinecones or pellet fuel and has adjustable heat settings. All this energy funnels to a grill top and even a phone charger.
Best of all, the fire is smokeless, so you don’t need to get up and move every time the wind changes. At only five pounds, it is lightweight enough to pack in your trail bag for a long hike. This is a perfect travel gift idea for anyone who wants to bring a bit of glamping to their camping.

We all have that one travel friend—that person who has kept the same sleeping bag for too many years, who insists it has character… If that’s what character is supposed to smell like.
Do them and yourself a favor with this sleeping bag from Cotopaxi. With a high-quality duck down fill and 15-degree rating, this is an ideal travel gift idea for someone who loves cold weather hiking.
What’s more, it comes with a very handy integrated pillow pocket and packs down nice and small for those travelers with a space budget, which, let’s be real, is all of us.

When I travel anywhere, I like to save bag space by taking clothes that are versatile without compromising on quality. One of the best ways to do this is by taking a jacket that is durable and weatherproof for hiking, but also suitable for sightseeing in the city.
That’s why I recommend this hoody from Arc’teryx. Light, insulated and quick-drying with a bit of subtle style, it is one of the best travel gift ideas for someone looking for a versatile winter layer.

If your camping set is needing an upgrade, look no further than this tent from Copper Spur. This is one of the best travel gifts for someone who likes a bit of headroom, as this tent is designed for maximum internal space.
As well as being very lightweight, it is adaptable for hot summer nights with the ability to turn it from a tent into a ventilated shelter. Three-season, two-person, one award-winning tent. One of the best gifts for people who travel light and love camping.

Every traveler knows the airline bag struggle. You need a backpack that is the size of a cabin bag with the storage capacity of a suitcase.
The only item you see everywhere, however, is the clickety-clack wheelie bags that would be hopeless on a hiking trail. Fear not, Peak Design has your back here with this amazing 45-liter travel backpack (collapsable to 30L in a literal pinch). Designed to be taken from the airplane cabin to the trail, this weatherproof wunderbag is the perfect gift for travelers who need a new backpack.
It’s definitely not the cheapest option on this list—this is a nice gift—but I’ve got one myself, and honestly love it. I’m sure they will, too!

One of my favorite places in the world to hike is the mountains of southern New Zealand. I also love being able to drink from the ice-cold streams that snake through the valleys and forests thanks to the LifeStraw filtered water bottle.
Forget the iodine tablets and the extra water bottles, this filtered bottle gives you clean, natural water with every sip. This is one of the best gifts for travelers who are eco-conscious and don’t like getting sick on the trail. I think it’s safe to say: That is most of us.

This is one of my personal favorites. As someone who hoards charging cables, stationery, SD Cards and other tech bits because “you never know…” It’s amazing to have somewhere organized to put them all.

Just to be clear, we are not telling you to buy the Egyptian artifact held at the British Museum (though if you get the chance, you should definitely see it). Rather, Rosetta Stone is a language learning tool that is easy for everyone to use.

It’s a fact: handheld selfies make your face look weird. Get yourself a better picture with a selfie stick. The distance will put your face in better proportion, plus it gives you more space to get your friends into the shot.
Our best recommendation is this extendable, battery-free version from Anker. Take it from me, the one time I wish I had a selfie stick was in Vietnam: wearing a triangular Non La hat makes it very hard to take a picture with a friend. The best travel gifts are ones you can share with friends, after all.

In my opinion, one of of the all-time best gifts for travelers are Bluetooth speakers—or as I refer to them, Instant Party Machines. If you’re out on the beach and need some beats to get the mood going, you can connect your phone and get a soundtrack going.
If your playlist runs out of steam, there’s no AUX cord to worry about, just connect someone else’s phone and you’re back on. I love these washbags. They are basically a portable washing machine for your trail gear. Dirty, stinky trail gear that’s being worn day after day is a hygiene risk (not to mention gross). But a Scrubba will have it fresh and clean with just a touch of detergent and some water.
These make perfect gifts for travelers who are looking for a space saver—washing your clothes mid-hike means you don’t have to pack as much clothing, plus the bag can be used for storage once dry. What’s more, you’ll save money while traveling by not having to pay for washing services or a laundromat, which makes it one of the best travel gift ideas.

One of the summer’s great conundrums is wanting to relax where there are no trees to hang your hammock. That was until this year when, thanks to a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, the Mock ONE came to the rescue.
This lightweight hammock setup is perfect for a trip away in the car. It takes only 60 seconds to put together the frame for portable comfort. These make great gifts for travelers who want to chill out, no matter where they are.
