Jan Kilbride, Avatar of the Vast.
Thunder rumbled and caused a hiss of discomfort from Jan as he took a moment to pause and look into a closed shop. Hands come up to cover his ears, and he waits for a few moments while taking a deep breath in and exhaling slowly. Hearing aids turned down to the lowest setting he could, the thunder is still distracting, and he is grateful it hasn't started raining. Yet. It gives him just enough time to stop staring at darkened accessories shown in the display to head down two more blocks and get to his flat. When the rain began, it had him gritting his teeth as he closed the door and looked around. Windows are open- time to close them. Another crack of thunder, and he covers his ears again. If only things could be normal for him. If only the one thing that happened to him up in space hadn't been both the best and the worst thing to happen to him.
Jan Kilbride, one of the three major crew up on Daedalus mission. He had always wanted to go to space... but given that he was taller than most, and he wasn't 'exceptional enough', he hadn't been selected for other programs. But here he was, and Mr. Fairchild took him in and up he went. Up there to do... strangely pointless experiments. No new research, no new projects that hadn't been done already. But his true purpose revealed itself within his marveling at the vastness of space and the microscopic meaning it was to be one man within it. The Falling Titan witnessed Jan, and Jan witnessed it, and that moment changed a lot of him.
For starters, its call to him burst his eardrums. The worst thing to happen to him. The rest of the mission was difficult, though not impossible, as he retained the slightest bit of hearing and managed to handle himself until they made it back down to Earth. Landing had been agonizing, but they gave him plenty of recovery time and took care of his healing process. Hearing aids became a necessity, with discussion for the future about possible implants to provide a more secure solution. Jan perhaps took a little bit longer to get used to this than most, but not nearly as long as he took to handle what else he had to deal with.
The voice of The Falling Titan had not left Jan at all. No hearing aids in, and all he had was the thrum of a heartbeat and the steady rumble of that call. It distracted, stirred up anxiety and unease, and yet also soothed him. Something about his experience with it, despite no-one else having seen or heard it at all, felt so very special and terrifying. Jan had been chosen, it seemed, and months after landing, after making a statement at The Magnus Institute of London... he accepted it. But when he did, his brain began trying to comprehend it all, stretching out into that infinite vast...
April 26th, 2007 Jan Kilbride suffered a stroke while gazing out at the midnight sky from his flat window. April 27th, 2007 Jan Kilbride woke up with his face pressed against his ceiling, gravity seemingly having gone from him like he had tried drifting out into space...
It took six hours for Jan to figure out how to come down from the ceiling. Longer for him to figure out how to walk again. Something was different and strange, and the call of the Titan was louder than ever, making it oh-so difficult to concentrate until he could get his hearing aids in. Once sound was permitted to reach him again, things sort-of got easier. He found that his eyes, which had been a soft gray-blue, had gone so deeply blue it was like looking into a cloudless sky just as the sun was starting to set. It took him days to figure out how to function again, to put himself together enough to go out for groceries, buy a pair of heavy boots to keep his feet on the ground. None of those first steps were easy for him, and he had no idea of what to do about it.
Fortunately, the payment for the Daedalus mission had been enough that Jan could live without working rather comfortably for a little while, so he didn't necessarily have to worry about a job. He secluded himself to his flat to figure this out, wondering where it came from and yet... not worrying about it. It felt pleasant and familiar, like being on a line to go out and do repair work on a solar panel- but no suit, no line, and he hit his head more than once on the ceiling as that feeling took hold of him. He learned quickly that he had to tie himself to the bed or he'd float. Windows needed to be kept locked and secure or he risked the chance of drifting out of them. But Gravity wasn't the biggest factor, nor were his eyes or state of mind on how incredible it was for all of this to be happening to the little tiny miniscule speck of existence that was him.
Jan hungered in a way he never had before. No amount of normal food sated it, and he grew hungrier and weaker by the day, which brought a little bit of a panic. Up until he found himself chatting with the mailman, and he felt himself drift into some sort of trance-like state... honing in on the fact that his poor dear mailman was actually afraid of the idea of space. Unfortunately for that man, all it took was a conversation about it all and a gentle pat on the shoulder from Jan. The Mailman could not be coaxed from his truck the rest of the day, and once he got himself indoors... he was diagnosed agoraphobic. How tiny he was, how easily it could be for the universe to just swallow him up.
But that hit the spot. That fear, it wasn't a lot but it filled Jan in a strange satisfaction. He felt better overall, and continued to figure himself out a little more... before he needed more of whatever that was. So he went out for a walk... and somehow found the house of that mailman, who refused to talk to him but the proximity was another taste. Later, it would be a bus driver on the last ride back toward his neighborhood. Another day, a woman at the park Jan had sat down next to. He couldn't entirely predict when his brain would shut off and the unraveling of the universe would begin, but he always felt better afterward. At least, for a little while. When he wasn't 'fed' enough, he was prone to zoning out heavily, or slipping into almost madman mutterings about the universe...
Nothing really quite hit the spot right, but fortunately Jan wouldn't have to fare on his own for too long. At some point in time, he bumps into one Mike Crew, almost literally. The two seemed to hit it off as at least conversation buddies, and while Mike shared with him his distaste for one Mr. Fairchild, Jan hadn't realized he could possibly contact his temporary employer about all of these... changes. Scheduling a meeting with Simon sometime later, both encounters- with Mike and Simon- got him on board for learning about his new purpose, serving The Falling Titan, the fear known as The Vast... as well as other fears in the world.
Discussions led to interest, and Mr. Fairchild was generous in his assistance to Jan. After some more time adapting and learning, Jan was able to 'feed' more appropriately to his needs, hanging out with Mike on occasion and having meetings with Simon. He wanted to work, and had a favourite Planetarium that had recently opened up a new building section with a large model of the solar system for educational purposes. Mr. Fairchild took care of that, got him a job there, and a new flat on the top floor of his building so he could enjoy the sky and the stars more. It all seemed too much, but Jan was reassured that he earned it and just needed to work on his 'gifts' more. So he worked hard and aimed to please while also finding new spots high-up to enjoy the views of the city with Mike hanging around doing tasks of his own.
The thunder rumbled louder and Jan finally just pulled the hearing aids out, sinking into the hum of The Titan as he watched the rain start up outside. Beautiful view, a lovely flat... and he was supposed to be somewhere right now. The attempt to go out had been foiled, and now he was back into some measure of safety- away from prying eyes of the worrisome increase in Stranger about town. Digging his phone out of his pocket, he began to pace as he started up a text to Simon.
'Hey... could I get a car sent to me? I'm sorry, I don't mean to be running late, but I was on my way and had to run back to the flat.' Jan ponders over the message for a few moments as his brain vibrates under the deep tones, something like static to his ability to focus still. Great for falling asleep to. Not great when his ceremony was starting in less than half an hour and he was supposed to be there by now. Hitting 'send', he waits and paces in his flat. It already has a soft path started for when he did this, though after a few minutes he usually stopped touching ground and let himself drift a little into a much more comfortable thinking position. Hands over ears, phone drifting in front of him, body curled up...
Jan Kilbride for another... maybe hour. Some discussion had been done with Mike ever since Simon dropped the offering into his lap. While it was definitely a cult to join the Family... Jan wouldn't be what he was if it weren't for the Fairchilds. Plus, he needed more help, more balance, more experience, and the whole lot of them could help him with that. Things not already strapped, taped or glued down start rising in the room, as well as those deep blues fall shut and he works on his breathing.
