Review: The Film Reroll
There’s a burst of laughter and confusion, and Joz Vammer, laughing, corrects her game master: “You said we take your favorite movies and turn them into movies, but this is a podcast!” “…We’re a podcast,” Paulo Quiros explains patiently over giggles from his players. “What if they didn’t know until you said that?” Kara Strait asks. “‘Ah, shit!'” She mimics the hypothetical viewer. “‘I thought…

My dealer: Got some straight gas called Summerspell. Gonna make you feel like you're in a totally normal 80s sex comedy starring Corey Feldman
Me: Whatever, I don't feel shit.
Me 45 minutes later: I failed my will roll to avoid admitting my feelings at the vigil
My buddy, pacing in circles: Paulo Quiros is lying to us

My current favourite RPG podcasts all have really spectacular GMing at their heart.
Paulo "Film Reroll" Quiros can (with Tim's backup) plan SO MUCH, but can also turn random elements into the core of a story just because the players brought them into focus, or happened to roll a certain way. The TMNT game was all due to a single 'random crime' roll in the first episode!
Johnny "Oxventure" Chiodini brings comedy and serious Feelings crashing right up against each other - and yeah the Oxventurers play a major role in that too, but Dob meeting his sister or Merilwen throwing down against that necromantic hunter or the reveal of Egbert's backstory, none of that would have had the impact it did without the way they play Literally Everyone Else In The World.
And of course Anthony "Dungeons and Daddies" Burch is SPECTACULAR at rolling with the unexpected, taking his own plans and weaving in what the players bring to the story. Like, the Pyramid was a roll of the dice, but then it was super important! Because he made it so!
Yeah, that's the good stuff.

Week #7-8
Introduction
From the midterm critique these comments I want to keep in mind:
How are people receiving horror and finding themselves within those thoughts?
What elements are you drawn to?
“When I think of horror, I think of violence.”
How do these narratives lead to further identity formation?
Creative Research
This week I explored board game ideas. I have an idea of a concept that can work as a video game board game or even just video. I think for the future I’d want to ideate on a loose story that can take form in different ways. First I did research on games that use horror themes and tropes, as well as talk to some friends that know more about board games than I do. Then I started working on the game’s themes and mechanics.
One thing I thought about was that many types of games don't have a movable character, but I think I want a character for people to play as. Creating a couple characters (not different personalities maybe but just the look of them) helps to create that sense of identity as you take on and embody the little player piece. Another thing that I want to keep in mind is that I don’t want the game to feel too basic or cheesy, I want it to be a layered exploration of identity.
Keeping all of this in mind, I created a rough prototype for a board game. I would want a lot more than 2 different characters to choose from, but just for the sake of time I chose two small characters from objects lying around my apartment. I had a couple other options, but I liked the idea of two different animals (duck and cat) trying to reunite because I feel like the form of your consciousness doesn’t need to be represented by a human character. Maybe next week I’d look more into 3D design/modeling to eventually print something out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
List of items for game:
2 Characters
Instructions Sheet
Game Board
12+ Unique Tiles
Event Cards
My Ideas:
-Game will have 2 players set up with the box dividing for now so they can’t see each other's board
-Game like collaborative battleship so like you’re working together to try and arrive at the same coordinate?
-horror elements
Like the haunt in betrayal I think the scariest tiles like the darkest ones will have the most doors or exits because going into that place in your mind helps break down walls and unlock and communicate whatever
So using those should have pluses but also minuses
You want to go to the darkest parts of your mind and when you do you
-Shut the Box will be able to be rolled 4-6 times
This is SLEEP PARALYSIS
Each player rolls a d6. You then together decide what number(s) to put down and any tile on those get removed from the board (they go back into the pile)
-Win condition is to have players meet at the edge of the board. When one player gets there, they can’t move and they must take damage. Once both players are at the same tile number at the edge of the board they win
Here was my finished prototype product:

Other Research
The Film Reroll
Beetlejuice (Part 1)
This podcast is great because they play through movies like they’re RPG campaigns. I love how the DM is able to let them go outside the bounds of the movie but still reel them in to hit the needed plot points. He controls the narrative while allowing the players to create new moments and identities almost for these already established characters.
The Big Picture
‘Terrifier 3,’ ‘Smile 2,’ and the 10 Best Horror Movies of 2024
The Slasher Movie Hall of Fame, With Alex Ross Perry
‘Speak No Evil’ and the Top Five “Get Me the F--- Out of Here” Movies, With James McAvoy!
Dandadan
This show is airing weekly and I just caught up on it. I went and read the manga up to where the show is now too because I love the art style so much. The takeaways I had is that you can show these creepy monsters and ghosts and aliens and have them be effectively creepy, but still keep the tone of the content to be targeted towards young people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reflections
I really enjoyed making this game! The feedback I got from having two people play it in class was extremely helpful as well. I think I could expand the concept to include 2-4 players as well, and it would still fit with my theme of identity formation. For the future, I learned I need to keep in mind the difficulty and think more about if I want to make a simple vs complicated game. I need to basically think about what the audience will be. I could also have a simple and harder version of a game which I’ve seen before. I also want to force more communication between the players and also force them using their imagination more, because my game for this week was almost purely a strategy game with not much story. Next week I also want to try working with colors possibly.

Currently on phone, but here’s a bullet list for now:
Home Alone and Galaxy Quest:
Jon Miller is the DM, and is seemingly conspiring against Kara Strait.
The plot shifts into borderline psychological horror.
Paulo Quiros’ character repeatedly tries to derail the plot. (Marv trying to talk Harry out of robbing the McCallister’s house versus Jason Nesmith taking baths and getting high instead of doing anything of substance.)
Kara Strait’s character dies while Paulo Quiros’ character technically wins the campaign due to breaking away from the plot. (Marv managing to escape and reinvent his life versus Jason Nesmith agreeing to stay in the Matrix.)
Paulo Quiros’ character gets severely injured through their own stupidity. (Marv getting electrocuted cutting through the power lines versus Jason Nesmith throwing out his back opening a heavy door.)
The main setting of the campaign gets destroyed by the end. (Granted, the Protector was digitized, not destroyed, but by the end of the campaign, it no longer existed in a physical sense, so it counts. Also, it kept blowing the fuck up due to Jason Nesmith’s stupidity.)
Kara Strait’s character is pinned for crimes they didn’t do. (Kevin blaming Harry for destroying his house versus Arthur pinning Guy’s death on Sir Alexander.)
Home Alone and Clue:
The DM has players be separated in order to have certain information and actions kept secret.
The DM recreates a scene from the movie off the top of their head. (Jon Miller’s “Angels with Filthy Souls” reenactment versus Lisa Kopitsky’s one-woman performance of Mr. Boddy’s arrival at the mansion.)
A character has an obsession with an element pertaining to the bathroom at the detriment of the plot. (Marv sticking to the Wet Bandits’ shtick of flooding the house versus Carolyn Faye Kramer almost having a heart attack ranting about the poop scraper,)
The climax sees Joz Vammer’s character run out of a house, and attract the attention of the police.
Paulo Quiros’ character stumbles across some form of political conspiracy (Marv mistakenly thinking the “party” Kevin throws is a political rally versus Mr. Green knowing about Mrs. Peacock taking bribes for her senator husband and Colonel Mustard’s treason.)
Property damage is a plot point. (Technically, the falling chandelier squishing the cop counts as property damage.)
The campaign involves elements being added that aren’t common to a usual campaign in order to facilitate a sense of mystery. (Lisa independently using game pieces from the actual Clue board game versus Jon only letting Joz have access to the full McCallister house gameboard, while Paulo and Kara have to uncover it room by room.)
Clue and Galaxy Quest:
The plot gets broken due to the players getting separated into groups. (This one is a minor stretch; I’m going this route due to Wadsworth becoming a borderline non-entity after Part 1 due to multiple players splitting off to do other things.)
At one point, the police storm into a building to arrest Kara Strait’s character.
Joz Vammer’s character suffers a psychotic break during the final episode.
Joz Vammer’s character dies.
There’s the presence of a DM-controlled character operating off of a false identity. (Wadsworth is revealed in the movie to be the real Mr. Boddy. Broms keeps pretending to be other people.)
Andy Hoover’s character gets nabbed by the cops, and taken for questioning.
A character is killed off screen, and Kara Strait has some degree of involvement. (Mr. Boddy is revealed to have been killed by Mrs. White, while Jon reveals Guy got murdered by a mugger between Parts 2 and 3, with Arthur deciding to pin it on Sir Alexander.)
Home Alone, Clue, and Galaxy Quest:
Hail of bullets ending.
The ineffectualness of the police. (The lone policer that shows up at the McCalister’s house and is Jeff-adjacent verse the cop that accident causes the chandelier to crash onto him versus the police causing a bloodbath at Spirit Gum Theater.)
Kara Strait and Joz Vammer’s characters are at each other’s throats.
Kara Strait running afoul of the police is a plot point.
Paulo Quiros gets a weapon used on him at one point at varying degrees of success. (Marv getting fed through the meat grinder via Kevin’s various traps versus Mrs. Peacock threatening Mr. Green with the fireplace poker [and Professor Plum trying to shoot Mr. Green] versus Sarris firing at the Protector [which Jason Nesmith was piloting, so it counts].)
Paulo Quiros is a player character rather than the DM, to the detriment of the other players. (Marv and Harry slowly falling apart as a group versus Jason Nesmith’s mere existence versus Mr. Green being the secret FBI agent looking to have everyone else go to jail.)
The closest the campaign gets to a successful ending is a pyrrhic victory. (Home Alone: Kevin beats the Wet Bandits, but his house gets destroyed. Clue: Mr. Green successfully turned over the evidence for everyone’s crimes… except Mrs. White’s. Galaxy Quest: Jason, Tommy and Fred willingly agree to stay in the morass and life lives of fantasy, while Spirit Gum Theater gets a rave review at the express of multiple deaths.)
So, about Galaxy Quest Part 5
MASSIVE FUCKING SPOILERS BELOW
So, if I were to tell you that Home Alone, Clue, and Galaxy Quest all form a Venn Diagram, with one specific thing in the center, what would you think I was alluding to...

Film Reroll: Halloween 3 Epilogue.
You know, I've been relistening to The Film Reroll, as one does, and it has always bugged me that Lynda isn't mentioned in any of the epilogues, so I've written her one. Totally.
Lynda Van Der Klok has never been taken seriously before. She's always treated as dumb and foolish, and after failing in the fight against the totally weird monster, she doesn't really feel any stronger. She woke up in the back of Danny Hodge's car just as the world began to break apart. It was beautiful but terrifying to watch the sky shatter into streaks of black and purple lightening bolts, trees and rocks splitting up from the ground where there was just grass before. The beings that she has somewhat become familiar with in her short time in the underworld appeared almost everywhere. The car's back tire was pierced from a gnarled root that shoved its way through the dirt. Lynda was confused at the sight of the underworld, and upset that the one person who had ever truly taken her seriously had abandoned her.
Austin Cunningham had quickly become her closest friend. During the time that Sam and Laurie had gone away, Lynda had found herself staring at the demon, listening to his long spell and observing his movements closely. Something about him called to her roots, the magic had made her feel closer to the world, and she trusted him immediately. He seemed to have trusted her, too, and during the times when she taught him colloquialism and breathing, he had taught her some things, too. Lynda had never felt love before. Not when she was with Jeff, or any of her other many boyfriends, not really. She thought she had felt it for Laurie at one point in her life, but she soon realized that it was nothing more than the love for a friend. Austin was different, though, so when she woke up to find that he had left without her, a pain struck through her heart. Lynda was alone once again.
She left Danny, Clara and Charlie by themselves in the Underworld, and went off to find her roots. With all the spells from Earth, the Underworld and all the other worlds, there had to be a way for her to reconnect. Her soul was tearing at her body to find a way back to her tree. She looked out of place in the Underworld with her bright green hair and shimmering eyes, but she was supposed to be here more than any of the other millions of people who had been wrenched into it. Most of the people had died in the span of three days, the initial shock of the situation leading to mass hysteria, and most people just weren't able to defend themselves against the hungry beings of the Underworld. Lynda wasn't strong, and if she were back on Earth, she knew she wouldn't be able to survive an attack from any creature, but here, her roots protected her. Every day, her connection to them grew stronger. She could feel the pulsing, totally living ground beneath her in a way that no one else could. She could even feel Austin, miles away from where she stood, hands clenching the dirt, fingers squirming for an answer.
Part of her still wanted to find Laurie, even though she knew her friend was totally dead. There was no possible way that Laurie would ever be able to enter into this world. She was gone forever, along with all of their other friends from high school. Lynda could feel their absence in the dirt. She had been bent over in the dirt, a field of protection surrounding her that she wasn't totally aware of, searching for her roots, for Laurie, for Austin, and for answers. In the early days of the worlds end, Lynda had quickly learned that she wasn't supposed to be alive. The universe she was in wasn't built for her existence, it was built around Sam Loomis and Laurie Strode. Lynda knew exactly where the world had split from the time line it was supposed to be following, and she wanted to know why. If she had died the way she was supposed to, her soul wouldn't be tearing itself up because of her missing roots. The World Tree showed her every possibility, including the ones where Michael Myers was never even a killer.
She kept coming back to Austin Cunningham. The demon was meant to be something for her, she totally knew it, but yet they had totally failed. Maybe they weren't. It was something she had totally decided on her own, when he had picked her up after she'd been attacked, but it still totally felt right. She was supposed to be with him. She totally knew it. As she knelt in the dirt, a person approached her. She totally felt them coming up behind her, but she refused to turn until they began to speak. "I know you. I think I know you. Have we met?" Lynda sighed and undug her hands from the dirt and turned to face Dark Horse. "We totally haven't. Not really. We only saw each other from a distance." "Ah, right, the girl who came out of the portal with the demon and other guy. Who are you in all of this?" Lynda glanced Ariana Valverde up and down, making note of the woman's new found power and strength from her time in the Underworld. "I'm the Roots." "The hell is that supposed to mean?" "What is hell in this world?" Lynda turned back to the dirt as Arianna flopped down next to her. "Seriously. What the fuck are doing?" "I'm trying to totally find my roots." Lynda began to dig her fingers back into the dirt, reaching even further down, and then paused. "You're a part of her, you know. Laurie. You totally are." "Who?" "The girl who the story was totally supposed to follow. Totally." Dark Horse laughed, and the sharp sound echoed in the empty space. "You're totally stupid, aren't you?" Dark Horse asked, laying back in the dirt to look up into the dark sky and tops of dying trees. Lynda scowled and dug further into the world. "I can sense your every form, Dark Horse. From your creator to your name giver, I can see it all in its totality. Totally." "I never gave you my name." "You didn't have to. I've been watching you. I've followed my roots around, and I've seen your role in this story. I totally have. I've seen how you look in the minds of listeners, I've seen how you look in the movies, in the writer's mind, in the minds of billions of people in billions and billions and billions of worlds that would totally hurt your mind to even glimpse at. You might be powerful, but you totally could not handle the type of power that I've totally come to wield." "Who are you?" "In this form? In this world? I'm Lynda Van Der Klock, a small piece of The World Tree. In another, I'm Paulo Quiros, and another, I'm Alec Smith, and another, I'm Chase Daniels, and in yet another, I'm Andy Hoover. I am an infinite fold of characters and people, who all totally reflect who I am here."
Dark Horse rolled over in the dirt onto her stomach. Lynda did everything she could not to look at the terrible woman, choosing to shove her arms further in, the dirt moving away with ease for her until she was well past her elbows in dirt. "Well I'm Dark Horse, though I guess you already knew that, and no matter what other universe you look at, I'm always and forever Dark Horse." "Keep telling yourself those types of lies to try and totally connect yourself into thinking that it all totally matters. Your power totally means nothing. This Underworld totally means nothing. The world was totally always going to end in our particular path. Totally. The only thing that actually totally matters, Dark Horse, is that in the end, the universe that is created by our multitude of universes is filled with stories that interest it." "Totally," Dark Horse murmurs into the dirt, trying to shove her hands into it next to Lynda. The dirt is hard for her, and it does not move to allow her in, and instead it does what it can to keep her from moving past the surface level until she eventually gives up, deciding that she is hitting rock. Her hands move closer to Lynda's spot, which is when Lynda finally looks up at Dark Horse once again. "The earth totally won't move for you. It doesn't totally trust you, and you are not totally a part of it. At least not in the way that I am. Totally." "What're you doing, Lynda Van Der Klock?" "I'm searching. For more answers." "But don't you know everything?" "In this body, I can only glimpse at the answers, I can not totally see everything. My memories of entirety are fleeting but there. I am trying to find a way to connect to it once again. It was the most peaceful state any living being could ever totally feel. Without it, my body is totally wrecked."
With that, Dark Horse stood. "Okay. I want that power. You could totally help me."

one of my favourite roleplaying tropes is when the GM tells one of the players something about their character and then the player repeats that, verbatim, in character
GM: Yeah, you don't believe any of that shit.
Player: -Tuning back into character- I don't believe any of that shit!

hi nic!! have you listened to the the latest film reroll episode? I haven’t seen the fifth element but I’m loving the reroll version
Hey Meg!!! Yes, I actually was just able to listen to eps 4 and 5 back to back for the Fifth Element reroll and I’m absolutely LOVING it
I also haven’t seen the original either (though when I was flipping through Hulu this weekend I saw it was on there so maybe I’ll watch it and see just how different the reroll is from it lmao) but I’m so in love with the whole cast of characters we’ve found ourself with. It’s such a weird, but charming ensemble but I think they all really balance each other out at this point with their different skills
Joz as Leeloo is especially such good casting. Probably sounds weird from someone who hasn’t seen it, but a super powerful being who has incredible power and potential, but also doesn’t know much, if anything about Earth culture? Yeah, give it to Joz. They’re killing it
The synergy of Andy, Joz, and Scott is also always so good to see - the Halloween crew back in action! I don’t remember if there’s been another reroll where it’s just this trip, but they really do work so well together. I love hearing them bounce ideas and role play off one another.
And of course major major props to Paulo as always. I have NO idea how he’s able to flesh these worlds out so completely. Like, Joz flies/crashes their car by a river and Paulo has this entire tribe of river people already in his head? He made up this fungi scientist who has a strained relationship with his son who’s some sort of corporate “archeologist” specifically for alien artifacts/technology? I’m always in awe of him and this is no exception. Paulo Quiros, teach me your ways!!!
But yeah I’m totally totally hype for the next episode!! Idk if it’ll be the final one, but we’re definitely in some sort of action climax and I’m excited to see how it goes :]

finally got through the blade runner reroll (so far)! a couple of thoughts:
carolyn continues to be a national treasure—she might not know whats going on but by god she’s having a fantastic time!
im really enjoying joz’s style of DM’ing, she’s clearly got a very deep understanding of how the world works, down to the mundane little things, and she’s managing to make a game which has had literally no scenes with more than one PC in it work
I feel like i’ve got a sense of lisa as an RP’er by now and she’s fantastic, she comes up with creative solutions to problems and fits into her character and the feeling of the movie very well
i’ve been very into FRR getting more women involved and all the performers are so excellent that there hasn’t been any sense of the show changing at its core
courtney’s amazing, she’s hilarious, a good fit with the rest of the cast, and I love her RPing
‘pitr always rolls for kinsey and then if it’s straight, he ignores it’
the whole first episode had a weird and wonderful energy to it, especially any time joz and pitr were talking
vampires???? I love you joz
big fan of paulo as roy, he’s a delightful combo of this solemn sadness and paulo-typical weirdness

The podcast is The Film Reroll, and they play through movies as tabletop rpgs using GURPS! It’s one of my favorite podcasts and this was, perhaps, my favorite campaign
one of my favorite d&d podcasts is doing a one-shot based on the friday the 13th movies. except the DM hasn’t told any of the players that it’s based on friday the 13th. he has them convinced it’s based on a sex-comedy coming-of-age film they’ve never heard of (that he made up). which is so fucking genius. because the characters in a slasher flick don’t know they’re in a slasher flick, why should the players? if you’re going for genre accuracy, make your players think they’re acting out animal house or something, or else they’ll end up weirdly genre savvy. it’s perfect.
and like, throughout the whole session, to keep the players convinced that the fake not-horror movie is real, the DM keeps mentioning weird, specific details about the fake movie, like, “oh yeah, didn’t i mention? your character is played by crispin glover before he was famous” or “so in the actual movie, you got lost and had a nice scene in an orchard, but so-and-so succeeded on his navigation roll”
and this has the players lulled into a false sense of security for the most part. but over the course of the game they get more and more suspicious of all the weird, doom-harbinging horror-movie details the DM keeps sprinkling in. every once in a while a player will be like, “okay so these identical hitchhiking twins are hot, right? wait, why are they speaking in unison”
it’s so genius. the DM introduces a small child who creates and collects ultra-realistic, cinema-quality latex monster masks, and none of the players even bat an eye. they don’t clock this creepy horror movie child at all. they’re too busy trying to hit on his older sister, just like their characters would be.
at one point one of the players gets weirdly, genuinely angry, and is like, “WHY DO I CARE??? so this old couple is talking about a tragedy at the local hospital, SO WHAT????? aren’t i just supposed to want to get laid right now?! why did you put this in the story, man?!?! was this couple even in the original movie? i don’t know, because you won’t let us look it up on IMDB, even! what is going on?!” and i know it’s an auditory medium, but fuck, i could SMELL the shit-eating grin the DM must’ve had on. that’s so fucking awesome
