With a concentration of painters, sculptors, writers, photographers, poets, performers, immigrants, beatniks, homosexuals, communists, devil worshipers, and uncategorized eccentrics, San Francisco had tolerance for everything except people from Los Angeles.

to say it was disorienting is to say nothing at all. the whole function of signs is to orient. but to not have any reasonable ideas as to how ? i think it broke something in me forever.

The SRL compound reminds me of an amplified version of the workshop of my childhood home at first glance. Bits of metal, wire, and dust everywhere. However, here the machines that create, create instruments that destroy. In the center of the room stands the bulk of The Hand o’ God, waiting for someone to add final touches, namely fingers. Pauline cryptically explains its name by stating that he envisions God would move things similar to the device. God's massive arm, hurling large objects into place. The tour begins. Rows of Walking Machines hang from the celling of the main workshop. In the far corner, the Rail Gun sits, obscured. We reach the computer epi¬ center of the SRL compound, where Pauline explains that he just picked up the two pieces of equipment in front of me for a small amount of money, and now that he has re-fitted them he can sell both for a nice profit margin. Much of the equipment, however, is not for resale, but is being stockpiled for future SRL plans. 1996
