Continuing my Sinister Dexter read through, I read the @rebellionpublishing Eurocrash volume yesterday, along with the Downlode Tales stories reprinted in the @2000adcomic Ultimate Collection. I hadn’t read the Downlode Tales stories before, and they are clearly such an important part of the story it’s incredible that they would have been left out. As much as I enjoyed the earlier volumes, I have to agree with everything that I’d read: Eurocrash is really where writer Dan Abnett and artist Simon Davis really take things to the next level. This book also includes Mission to Mangapore, Andy Clarke’s first extended story for the series. My first time messing around with turntables had to be in like 1996. Bassfrog was the first person I actually knew personally that owned a pair. I wouldnt dare to touch then at the time. He lived in Rochester. Every party had DJs that had technic 1200s. And if your didnt have them you were considered whack in Detroit. I grew up un a very abusive ( lo rent ) home. My only escape was music. I hated Pontiac. So I left to go to Detroit. I was blown away of how much diversity, a sence of love and community I never got at home or my neighborhood. Paul Johnson made some bangers. I mean everyone would get on the dance floor when feel my M.F bass would come on. I just found out about his passing. Pauls music was like our anthem in the Detroit rave scene. I got to speak to him one time. I wanted to know his secrets on his kick drum. He said I dont do anything. No compression, no effects, not even mastering. He said my shit is just raw. It really blew me away. So i asked him for a sample pack. He said "never, last time I gave someone a sample pack it made them (daft Punk) famous." I can totally hear that in Thomas Bangalters roulet tracks. I just found out today all paul used was a akai S01 and a tr505. That was fucking mind blowing in itself. It was so humble to even tell me his secerts, there was no secret. I feel very lost and scared. Where all im going to do is stay at home and play with these mother fuckers. Rest in peace.
