I still think they’re great, and this book features gorgeous work by both Simon Davis and Andy Clarke. I’ve been enjoying reading these stories so much, it’s inspired me to go back and reread the @2000adcomic and Megazine issues from when I first subscribed, and probably talking about them on my blog. Aaaand the Sinister Dexter read continues with the last of the @rebellionpublishing books (to date, anyways; I still hold out hope for some sort of complete reprint someday like every other long-running @2000adcomic has received). After the almost back to back epics of Eurocrash and Mission to Mangapore in the previous volume, this book collects a number of shorter, more self-contained stories of Downlode’s two best gun sharks. The lion’s share of the art is by Andy Clarke, including the cover. I started reading the strip during his run, so he will always be “my” SinDex artist, although there’s nice work from Simon Davis here, as well as old favorites like Paul Johnson, and new favorites like Steve Roberts. I think the next collection will bring me pretty solidly into the stories I read when I first started reading the prog. Continuing my Sinister Dexter read through, I read the @rebellionpublishing Eurocrash volume yesterday, along with the Downlode Tales stories reprinted in the @2000adcomic Ultimate Collection. I hadn’t read the Downlode Tales stories before, and they are clearly such an important part of the story it’s incredible that they would have been left out. As much as I enjoyed the earlier volumes, I have to agree with everything that I’d read: Eurocrash is really where writer Dan Abnett and artist Simon Davis really take things to the next level. This book also includes Mission to Mangapore, Andy Clarke’s first extended story for the series. I read the third Sinister Dexter collection yesterday. Most of the stories in this book were left out of the Ultimate Collection volumes, but I got a kick out of them. Even the shorter stories flesh out the characters and the city of Downlode bit by bit, and they all made me smile. Continuing my Sinister Dexter journey, I read the second book from @rebellionpublishing and DC Comics yesterday. These books include a lot more of the shorter as no one-shot stories,so I’ll read these until I get to the stories that are only reprinted in the Ultimate Collection. I find those shorter stories to be a lot of fun, and enjoy the world building, and the way writer Dan Abnett plays with storytelling. Sinister Dexter is a particular favorite strip from @2000adcomic. It’s been a while since I’ve read these early stories, and they totally hold up. While clearly inspired by John Travolta & Samuel L Jackson’s characters from Pulp Fiction, this series quickly becomes its own thing. The action is exciting, the jokes make me smile, and this volume features art by folks like Genry Flint and Simon Davis. Both very early in their careers, but already fantastic. I see a lot of hate for SinDex online, but I figure that must be a vocal minority. The series was already running for 7 years when I started subscribing, and that was 20 years ago. I just wish we’d get a comprehensive reprint of all the stories, like literally every other long-running 2000 AD series. Whatever. I’ll read what I can, and my recent discovery that the 2000 AD Ultimate Collection has collected a lot of the strips between the Rebellion collections and when I started the series. Sinister Dexter is one of my favorite long-running @2000adcomic series, and I’m always excited to see the gunsharks (hit men) from Downlode (the mega-city future Europe evolves into) on the cover. Even more exciting, the artist of this recent cover, Andy Clarke, was the artist on the series when I first started subscribing, over 20 years ago. So it’s not just a great cover, but I have a personal connection to it. I have no idea where the strip is going, but Sinister Dexter—or, I guess just Dexter now—never fails to excite, to keep me guessing, or make me smile. With a new season comes a new jumping-on issue of @insta2000ad (although with the final part of the current Sinister Dexter, with a humdinger of a cliffhanger). The Dredd story features gorgeous art by Boo Cook and shows a bit of the toll the ended-last-week epic End of Days took on Dredd. There’s the start of the first new Stickleback series in like 6 years; hopefully they’ll have enough material for another collection soon, because that strip is fantastic. And the aforementioned Sinister Dexter celebrates its 25th anniversary in the comic. It’s another favorite, and I’d love to see more collections of it. And then there’s the big surprise: a new series of Hookjaw, a revival of a classic featuring a killer shark. And more! Such a great collection of strips.
