The second stage is the self realisation and awareness that something is wrong with a refusal to accept that. More effort is made to remember so memories can be more long form with a little more deterioration in quality. The overall personal mood is generally lower than the first stage and it a point before confusion starts setting in.

Here we are presented with some of the last coherent memories before confusion fully rolls in and the grey mists form and fade away. Finest moments have been remembered, the musical flow in places is more confused and tangled. As we progress some singular memories become more disturbed, isolated, broken and distant. These are the last embers of awareness before we enter the post awareness stages.

Rhapsody in Blue · Gary Graffman · New York Philharmonic Orchestra George Gershwin · Zubin Mehta Manhattan: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ℗ 1979 Sony Music Entertainment Released on: 1987-02-03
+
Song of the Day - “Rhapsody In Blue”
Today is the 100th anniversary of the premiere of George Gershwin’s masterpiece “Rhapsody In Blue” - February 12th, 1924.
This much-anticipated concert, on a snowy afternoon at Aeolian Hall inn Manhattan, was called "An Experiment in Modern Music”. It was performed by Gershwin himself on the piano, backed up by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra.
This exquisite piece, the quintessential blending of classical music and Jazz, was a perfect reflection of New York City, and really of America, being, as Gershwin put it, "a musical kaleidoscope of America, of our vast melting pot, our unduplicated national pep, our blues, our metropolitan madness.”
For me, it never gets old... and while this original version is obviously special, my favorite version of it is Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic with Gary Graffman on the piano recorded for the soundtrack of Woody Allen's “Manhattan”… perfection….

Advertisements for March 1923 records from Victor and Columbia in the New York Times in February 1923. Victor's advertisement from February 15,1923 shows Russian bass Feodor Chaliapin recording a version of the Russian folk song "Song of the Volga Boatman" (there is a version of that song used in Punch-Out as Soda Popinski's music). A version of the hit song "Carolina in the Morning" and Paul Whiteman Orchestra's version of "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" is shown. (That would be one of the most popular songs of 1923).
You can hear Whiteman Orchestra's version of Parade here:
youtube
Columbia's February 20, 1923 advertisement shows that it has a few blues records, some classical music and opera, some show tunes, and some pop songs sung by Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor. This is the St. Louis Blues version by Ted Lewis's band advertised by Columbia (which was a song written by W.C. Handy)
youtube
And that concludes today's look at what two of the leading bandleaders of the 1920s were doing late 1922/early 1923.

Henry ‘Chips’ Channon: The Diaries (Vol. 1), 1918-38, entry for 14th April 1923
—
Saturday 14th April
We dined at three tables this evening at the Grafton Galleries, we being the Carlisles, the Prince of Wales,¹ Poppy Baring,² Mrs Coats,³ Alice Astor, Prince Henry⁴ and a little woman he is flirting [with], Prince George,⁵ Lady Alexandra Curzon,⁶ Serge Obolensky and Paul of Serbia. Paul Whiteman,⁷ an American, conducted his fabulous orchestra with intoxicating skill on hearing who was in the room. At about 11.30 the Prince of Wales decided to commandeer the band and we left . . . but where to go? We agreed on the Curzons’ house (which is closed for repairs). The Prince of Wales sent to St James Palace for a great deal of champagne: the band of twenty-eight musicians arrived and we all crept stealthily into the darkened house. But no glasses! Prince Henry and I searched the bedrooms and collected every available toothbrush glass . . . . At dawn we went out on the balcony and at last when the band was ready to collapse and we were exhausted we sadly separated. It was 7.30 Sunday morning. We walked up Pall Mall in our evening dress hunting taxis. The guard at Marlborough House⁸ recognised the young pink princes and presented arms. We have all sworn to secrecy about this hush party but I wonder how long it will be before all of London knows and gossips. I shan’t say a word.
—
1. Prince Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David (1894-1972), elder son of King George V and Queen Mary, created Prince of Wales 1911; succeeded his father in January 1936 as King Edward VIII, abdicated December 1936; created Duke of Windsor on his abdication; married Wallis Warfield Simpson (1896-1986), of Baltimore, in 1937.
2. Helen Azalea ‘Poppy’ Baring (1901-80), daughter of Sir Godfrey Baring Bt, and Eva Hermione Mackintosh: the Duke of York had proposed to her in 1921 but his mother, Queen Mary, had forbidden the union because of her supposed unsuitability. She was also vetoed as a bride for Prince George, whose mistress she became. She married William Piers Thursby (1904-77) in 1928. She ran a dress shop in Down Street, off Piccadilly in London.
3. Audrey Evelyn James (1902-68), daughter of William Dodge James, married in 1922 Captain Muir Dudley Coats MC (1897-1927) of the Scots Guards. Having been widowed she married in 1930 Marshall James Field (1893-1956), an American department-store heir, investment banker and newspaper proprietor. They divorced in 1934.
4. Prince Henry William Frederick Albert (1900-74), third son of King George V and Queen Mary, created Duke of Gloucester 1928; married in 1935 Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott (1901-2004), daughter of the 7th Duke of Buccleuch.
5. Prince George Edward Alexander Edmund (1902-42), fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary, created Duke of Kent 1934; married in 1934 Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark (1906-68). Although known before his marriage to have had a number of mistresses he was also believed to be bisexual, and became one of Channon’s closest friends. He was killed on active service with the RAF when his flying boat crashed into a hillside in Caithness.
6. Lady Alexandra Naldera ‘Baba’ Curzon (1904-95), Lord Curzon’s youngest daughter by his first marriage. In 1925 she married Major Edward Dudley ‘Fruity’ Metcalfe (1887-1957), confidant and equerry of the future King Edward VIII, but conducted a number of affairs with men in high society, notably Lord Halifax, between the wars. Because of her flirtations with various fascists in the 1930s her nickname morphed into ‘Baba Blackshirt’.

James Reese Europe (February 22, 1881 – May 9, 1919), known as Jim Europe, was an American ragtime and early jazz bandleader, arranger, and composer. He was the leading figure in the African American music scene of New York City. Eubie Blake called him the "Martin Luther King of music". He organized the Clef Club, a society for African Americans in the music industry. In 1912, the club made history when it played a concert at Carnegie Hall for the benefit of the Colored Music Settlement School. The Clef Club Orchestra, while not a jazz band, was the first band to play proto-jazz at Carnegie Hall. It is difficult to overstate the importance of that event in the history of jazz in the US – it was 12 years before the Paul Whiteman and George Gershwin concert at Aeolian Hall, and 26 years before Benny Goodman's famed concert at Carnegie Hall. The Clef Club's performances played music written solely by African American composers, including Harry T. Burleigh and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. His orchestra included Will Marion Cook, who had not been in Carnegie Hall since his performance as a solo violinist. Cook was the first African American composer to launch full musical productions, fully scored with a cast and story every bit as classical as any Victor Herbert operetta. He was known for his outspoken personality and unwillingness to bend to musical conventions, particularly in his insistence on playing his style of music. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/Co9sxPNL2hd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ain't Misbehavin' (1929 Jazz Standard)
"Ain't Misbehavin'" is a 1929 stride jazz/early swing song. Andy Razaf wrote the lyrics to a score by Thomas "Fats" Waller and Harry Brooks for the Broadway musical comedy play Connie's Hot Chocolates. As a work from 1929 with its copyright renewed, it will enter the American public domain on January 1, 2025. Although Ain't Misbehavin is a standard composed by Fats Waller and Harry Brooks, it was Louis Armstrong who turned it into a universal classic with the premiere of "Keep Shufflin'", a musical composed by Fat Waller himself and which would end up establishing Armstrong and his “Hot Five” / “Hot Seven” as one of the most important artists of his time.
The song was first performed at the premiere of Connie's Hot Chocolates in Harlem at Connie's Inn as an opening song by Paul Bass and Margaret Simms, and repeated later in the musical by Russell Wooding's Hallelujah Singers. Connie's Hot Chocolates was transferred to the Hudson Theatre on Broadway during June 1929, where it was renamed to Hot Chocolates and where Louis Armstrong became the orchestra director. The script also required Armstrong to play "Ain't Misbehavin'" in a trumpet solo, and although this was initially slated only to be a reprise of the opening song, Armstrong's performance was so well received that the trumpeter was asked to climb out of the orchestra pit and play the piece on stage. As noted by Thomas Brothers in his book Louis Armstrong: Master of Modernism, Armstrong was first taught "Ain't Misbehavin'" by Waller himself, "wood shedding" it until he could "play all around it"; he cherished it "because it was 'one of those songs you could cut loose and swing with.'"
After the good reviews received at the premiere of the musical (in which curiously he did not even appear on stage, but instead played in the pit intended for the musicians), Armstrong decided to take the song to the studio a year later, introducing by course his own personal imprint. The success was dazzling, but curiously, although more than 20 different versions of the same song were recorded, a year later it had fallen into oblivion. It was not until the mid-1930s when the song was recovered again, through Duke Ellington, in a curious revival that was joined by versions by Jack Teagarden, Django Reinhardt, Paul Whiteman and Jelly Roll Morton, who performed it in the Library of Congress. But although the song survived the swing and Big Band era, the composition was too classic to sound “new” once the Second World War ended, so even though Dizzy Gillespie recorded his own version in 1952, it did not become a success again until 1978, when Hank Jones premiered on Broadway a Tony-winning musical based on the golden age of jazz and titled “Ain't Misbehavin.” Today the song is not part of the majority of modern jazz repertoires, but nevertheless, it remains a composition that must be studied in schools, especially for those interested in mastering the Harlem stride style in which Art Tatum was a master and his version of this song, a true marvel.
