This is such a great McCartney interview. Not because it yields specific info, but because it demonstrates his vibe so much better than most. He's usually interviewed by such media turds and he just has a complete wall up for those. It makes him come across so stiffly. Unfortunately (it most be so brutal and alienating for him?), those are 99% of interviewers. Sit him down in front of a shit-talking, sarcasm king, and McCartney is low-key thrilled and opens right up.

It was New York, around 1974, and I think it was around the first time they had gotten back together again. I got a knock at the door at the Pierre Hotel where I had taken over a suite for months and months…. About three in the morning there’s a knock on the door and John was there, and he had Paul with him! The two of them had been out on the town for the evening. He said “Can we come in? You won't believe who I've got here,” and I said, “Wow I thought you two had…” and he said, “No no, all that's going to change.” It was great! We just spent the evening talking. It was kinda a strange thing between them, there was a little bit of distance every now and again. But that must've been the first time they were back together since the big bust-ups. They actually asked me if I'd join the two of them and become a trio with them, and we'd change the name to something like David Bowie and The Beatles because they liked the idea of it being DBB. But, you know, the next morning it just never came to anything.

…John hummed the melody of Paul’s new single, which he said he could not get out of his head. “It’s driving me crackers!”

Paul was the only musician who could scare him into writing great songs and vice versa.

Just thinking about Eric Idle saying Paul hugged him during the Concert for George again!
Yahoo Entertainment: Tell me about the iconic Monty Python performance at the “Concert for George” all-star tribute at Royal Albert Hall in 2002.
Eric Idle: Olivia asked me if Python would come on. … She said, “Everybody's doing a George song. Would you do ‘Piggies’?” And I said, “We don't really do songs. We're not a singing group. You know, we do idiotic and rude things! So, why don't we sing ‘Sit on My Face and Tell Me That You Love Me’?” And she let us do it, so we did it! And I thought, “He would've been so happy that we did this. This would've made him so proud.” We insisted on doing something rude, and it lightened the mood. Laughter is close to tears, and if you can laugh at those times, it's really helpful. Because the rest of it was kind of very sad — like that the end with Joe Brown singing “I'll See You in My Dreams” with the petals falling, which is the most moving thing I think I've ever been part of. I'd have to go and cry a bit. And then Paul was great; he said, “Come here, you need a hug.” Every time he'd find me crying somewhere at the back, it was: “You need a hug. And it was very lovely, very nice. X

[Paul] was a polite, well-brought-up lad, I thought. On the plane, as soon as we took off, he would stroll down the aisle like the captain of the ship, beaming and making small talk. "How ya doin', Ivor?" he would ask in a mock American accent. "Fancy a whiskey?" Then he would go to the galley and return with a drink in hand. He gave me the McCartney full-court charm offensive - not because he necessarily liked me, but as he told me, "You're from the Express - we love the Express and get it every day. My dad loves the crossword. He read it from cover to cover when we were growing up. I like Rupert Bear (a comic strip) and those Giles cartoons."

Something funny is that Paul tried (still tries??) to label himself as "the avant garde" Beatle when he was the only one who didn't participate in a truly published avant garde composition while the Beatles were still together. Only George and John took the risk of making actual experimental albums at the time and even Ringo participated a bit in Revolution 9.
I guess that "Carnival of light" might have given him that point but George blocked its publication 😂. He probably left explicit instructions to never allow it because that record has not been released yet.

“I heard a lot of that stuff [‘I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise’, Paul Whiteman Orchestra, ‘Chicago’] and I think that filled my computer with data. So that when I came to print out later, it was all in there. One of the great things about me and John was we both had that. We talked about some of the songs we liked, and he liked ‘Little White Lies’ … The night that you told me! Those little white lies! I knew that, so it gave us little bonds. That was his print-out. So when we came to write together we had similar print-outs, similar data from our upbringing. People tended to think of John as just a rebel or something; there was this whole other side to him that I liked, and that allowed me to get on better with him than if he’d just been a rebel.”
— Paul McCartney, interviewed in 2019.
