Strategy — Graffiti in Space (Constellation Tatsu)
Graffiti In Space by Strategy
Based in Portland, Oregon musician Paul Dickow has been releasing music across a range of electronic styles since the late 1990s. His new album as Strategy takes on a Basic Channel style minimal dub techno.
Dickow says he considers himself is a record collector first, DJ second and musician third. If this may seem a false modesty, it does point to where his strengths as a composer and producer lie. His ear and his sense of dynamics are the keys to Graffiti In Space. As a collector, he listens closely and sees how he would make things sound better for him. As a DJ, he is expert at pacing, sequencing and concentrating on physical effect. The bass fairly rumbles, the synth pads provide spongy propulsion and high-end squelches pan through your head causing a most agreeable sense of disorientation. He elevates this record when he plays with tempo and volume or drops shards of trance and rave into the mix.
The disc begins sedately enough with “Remote Dub” which has the slow-build aqueous flow of an early Porter Ricks track, a constant flux where everything swirls together in a sub-atomic slow dance. “Fountain Of Youth” introduces distant kick drums beating and metallic cracks amidst cavernous delay. “Message From Ouroboros” begins with a classic 4/4 trance beat, building stabs of arpeggiated synths and rolling bass. You can feel the big drop coming and at 2:47 the huge gut punch rush of sub-bass roars out of the speakers; the next 5 minutes are spent waiting for another, but Dickow, with admirable restraint and perhaps a knowing shrug, refuses the indulgence of repeating it. As he shifts down through the gears, Dickow plays with reverb, echo and pans to shift focus points and lower the tempo so you alight at the end, calm but invigorated.
Graffiti In Space is an immaculately constructed trip through a genre often derided as background music. It’s a crowded field but Strategy stands out by taking the few key elements, adding some unexpected touches of his own, and emphasizing the physicality of his music. Play at volume with the sub-woofers all the way up, your neighbors probably won’t thank you but it will be well worth an angry thump on your ceiling, if you can hear it.

Bandcamp Friday buy: Wild Card 2 by Wild Card (Paul Dickow + Marcus Fischer + William Selman)

Jim Henson on the set of Die Fraggles with Gobo and Uncle Traveling Matt. Die Fraggles is the German co-production of Fraggle Rock.
The segments within the Muppet world of Fraggle Rock were the same as the North American version, but dubbed with German voice actors. The segments from outer space (i.e. the Doc and Sprocket and Traveling Matt segments) were changed to fit the German audience and filmed at FSM-Studios in Munich.
The German wraparounds copied the North American Doc’s set and script word-for-word (except in German), whereas the UK and French co-productions were generally different. 85 of the 96 episodes were co-produced.
Steve Whitmire talked about his experiences on the set with Hans-Helmut Dickow to Duncan Kenworthy in the Fraggle Rock Season Two DVD Interviews segment titled “Docs And Sprockets”.
All of the Fraggles’ voice actors reprised their roles for the German dub of the animated version of Die Fraggles.
VIDEO RELEASES For a detailed list, see Die Fraggles Videography. After a slow start during which the first half of the first season was released on DVD four times between 2008 and 2010 (slightly repackaged), the entire 85 episode run of the show was finally made commercially available for the first time on December 10, 2010, and issued in a complete box set in 2011.
A reissue of the complete series was released in 2018, for the first time donning the Jim Henson Company logo.
CAST Doc: Hans-Helmut Dickow Sprocket: Steve Whitmire (for first 12 episodes only), Dave Barclay, Mike Quinn (for 6 second season episodes only), Louise Gold (the last handful of episodes) Sprocket (assistant): Eva Böhmke Uncle Traveling Matt and Gobo Fraggle (puppeteer only): Siegfried Böhmke CREW Director: Horst Eppinger Set Designer: Horst Hennicke Production Supervisors: Martin Baker, Hermann Hinze-Selch Dialogue Translation/Voice Direction: Eberhard Storeck Editor: Hans-Dieter Radke

Just listened to B2 Occurrence At The Triple Door by GeoNorth Physical: geographic-north.com/cassette/the-infinity-file/ Digital: geographicnorth.bandcamp.com/album/the-infinity-file Catalog #: GN39 Deprived aura cassette, limited to 100 Mastered by Sean McCann Strategy is the longrunning solo project of Portland, Or. producer Paul Dickow. While Dickow has been involved with a number of unusually varied bands, collaborations, and labels, Strategy remains Dickow's most prolific, perpetually evolving and versatile project. 'The Infinity File' presents the final chapter in Dickow's long investigation into the mysterious power of cassette tape loops - an exploration previously heard on Strategy's 'Noise Tape Reggae' (Entr'acte, 2008) and 'Noise Tape Self' (Further Records, 2015). This process was confined to only a variable-speed, four-track tape deck and Dickow's own hand-made effects boxes. Opener "Noise Tape Emax" opens the set with a series of wide-eyed blips and a meandering, dislocated rhythm. The oddly-angled chant of synth noise soon takes shape into something else entirely. The various loops lock into one another at chance but perfect intervals. "Be Careful With That AX-60, Eugene" floats in a wash of clipped, stuttering clicks and shifting chords. You can't help but get lost in its calm, undulating hysteria. "Two Echoes" is a slow-burning drift of fluorescence that channels William Basinski without retreating into overly elegiac murk. B-side opener "Persistence of Memory" distills an amorphous cosmic drone seemingly beamed from some distant and unknown place. "Occurrence at the Triple Door" and closing opus "Requiem for Apex Predators" unfurls a dopamine cloud of hazy bliss, not unlike pop ambient godhead Gas at his most lethargic and lysergic. The fog eventually dissipates, making way for a blurry bassline that recalls the atmospheric funk of Strategy's classic 'Future Rock' (Kranky, 2007).

Emergency
The small time Portland post punk band Emergency always had a sense of awkward urgency, shedding layers of corrosive skin with impulsive clumsiness. Their vocal sputtering and guttural splattering’s alerting the listener with dangerous intentions. Made up of Paul Dickow on drums, Ben Lund on bass, Amy Suzanne Heneveld on guitar and lastly vocalist Ethan Swan, the four abused their means of music-making with an assortment of loud and off-kilter arrangements, flinging blobs of sound with childlike charm onto an insipid wall. Yet, not much is known of Emergency, their only full length album being a rare, screen-printed and recycled inside-out LP on Portland local label Archigramophone Records. The Less I Know is a bizarre trip into minds unknown transmitting songs titles such as ‘Spit With Poison In Your Mouth’ and ‘Tongues In Their Eyes.’ The DIY band also shared a split LP with San Francisco’s spiky electro-punkers Numbers.
Emergency drummer Paul Dickow went on to form the ambient electronica outfit Strategy and is also part of outfits Nudge, One Human Minute and Sound People. As Strategy, you feel as though you are being swathed in summer haze, sinking further into the sofa, all enraptured by slow, timeless sounds drifting like gentle conveyor belts in and out of the mind. It’s fair to say that Strategy is a million miles away from the muddled art punk of Emergency.
Dickow recalls growing up in Idaho with his composer and amateur computer programmer father in which there were vintage synthesizers galore. He further expresses his interest in ‘80s synth-pop and drum machines but maintains a level of mystery about the music he creates, preferring to speak of the equipment, mixing, producing and circuit boards used to function his methods. In an interview with online electronic music magazine Resident Advisor he comments that ‘Programming is a learned thing, playing comes first for me. When I make a song, I don’t usually sit there and cut loops into shape. When I play drum machines and samples, I’m really playing them.’ He goes on to fondly recall ‘One of my early bands opened for Mouse On Mars and they recorded us playing and then sampled it into their set. That blew my world wide open.’
The Less I know is long overdue a spin, so I’m going home right now to dig it and dance all angular to its eccentric rhythms and bizarre lyrics... such as ‘LICK! LICK! LICK! LICK! STICKY! STICKY! STICKY! STICKY!’

Strategy’s “Occurrence at the Triple Door” Might be the Funkiest Ambient Song Ever
From his Portland, Oregon home, producer Paul Dickow (aka Strategy) practices a form of musical alchemy. He breaks opens old cassettes his friends give him, rewires their magnetic tape, adds his own embellishments via an array of homemade effect pedals, and in the end transforms random sounds into beatific ambience.
His new composition, “Occurrence at the Triple Door,” was made with this same process, but he’s found an unexpected funk in all his years of fiddling. Taken from his recently released album, The Infinity File, Dickow extracts a mind boggling amount of texture and alluring glow from found objects. The whirling, blanketing noise that opens the track pulses and radiates like an alien tractor beam pulling you in slowly. Just as gradually, he melts away the trance he’s built, pouring in bits and pieces of percussion and distorted melody: A thick, mutant bass-like sound that swims in all this beautiful mess resembles a trumpet and upright bass all at once. Suddenly, what was once a very noisy ambient track takes sharp shift, and with “Occurrence at the Triple Door,” Dickow makes his approximation of cosmic jazz. Never has nominally ambient music sounded this groovy.
