X-Men First Class (Vol 2) 16 (Nov 2008)
Jeff Parker/Patrick Scherberger
November 2008 was a good month: it was the end of the presidency of George W Bush and of this run of X-Men First Class. We're not totally completely done - this issue was followed by a special that I'm reading next, and then a few more miniseries and whatnot that I will have to read further down the line, but this was where this book ended as an ongoing title. And not a moment too soon.
Tumblr media
Of course, what better way to mark the end of the run than with a story about Iceman storming out of the group and hanging out with the Human Torch for a week, being obnoxious bros? I assume when this was written they simply didn't know the run was getting cancelled, but it still seems appropriate that such a weak, directionless series should end with such a weak, directionless issue.
Tumblr media
The idea here is that these two are the young hotheads (get it?! get it?!?!?) of their teams, which is sort of true of Iceman but has always been a boring characterisation (it's 100% true of the Human Torch, but that's because he's a boring character from a boring team). It doesn't give the issue much to do, and things are only briefly enlivened when they meet Spiderman for about three pages.
Tumblr media
The cover suggests that all three of them team up but hilariously they don't: Peter knows these guys are losers and just leaves them to fight some second-rate Spiderman villains. The "resolution" comes when Bobby goes back to the X-Men because....Johnny tried to steal his girlfriend.
Tumblr media
God, this sucks. But thankfully it's over now, as an ongoing series, at least. What was this series? Even more than the first eight-issue run it abandoned the idea of being about the X-Men's early days or in some way a commentary on the 60s comics: it's just a series of disconneded adventures, most of which seemed to think that the X-Men weren't interesting enough on their own and needed to be featured alongside other Marvel characters.
This was a huge waste of potential: the opportunities for early-days storytelling when the X-Men aren't entangled with the rest of the universe and you don't have to keep track of 200 backstories are really promising, and the small cast should have allowed deep exploration of the six main characters.
Instead, none of that happened in these books, which also didn't present much in the way of action or visual invention. If you only knew about these issues you would have no idea whay the X-Men were a big deal, and these also wouldn't have served as much of an introduction.
My guess is - given all the changing artists etc. - it was clear for a while that this book was going nowhere, and its cancellation was a good thing: but it should have happened wayyyy sooner.

…and the Masters of Evil?
Searching for a Doom story and stumbled across these, new to me, from 2009, Paul Tobin & pencils shared by Jacobo Camagni and Patrick Scherberger. The title is mystifying, as the MoE barely have a role larger than the Sinister Six and the Circus of Crime. They really missed a beat by just having Magneto and not the Brotherhood, making the whole series have a team theme. The art is not my cup of tea, for design, but is very energetic.
The story is a great Doom one, though, really about his character, revolving around two macguffins. (Maybe four?) Spoilers below…

Bonus: one of the best appearances of Selene ever. And it ends in the longest set up dad joke in comics. (Probably not literally, because comics, but 4 issues is a hell of a wind up.)

And the punchline…
